The Date

It took the month that Robin had told Starfire, causing her to count down the days. She was there as much as she could to talk to her love and get him anything that he wanted or needed, day or night. Days past as Starfire watched Robin recover and she grew more and more anxious for the night that Robin had promised. She knew that it was going to have a good time, she was sure of that, but Robin would not tell her where they were going to go. “It going to be a surprise,” he said. And that was all that she was able to get out of him. No matter of begging and pleading would make him change his mind.

The day before Robin was going to have his cast removed he made a phone call while the others were fighting. “One good thing about this is that Star is definitely not going to have any idea where we’re going.” With his heart racing, he made the call.

“So I have the reservation for tomorrow? Good. Thanks. Bye.”

“Robin?”

“Oh. Star! Your back.”

“Did I do something?”

“I just didn’t think that you’d be back yet.”

“Then everything is good?”

“Perfect. Tomorrow I get my cast off and you and me will be going out.”

“Where?”

“You’ve tried too many times for me to tell you.”

“Please. I am unable to wait,” Starfire begged with her eyes wide.

“No. Just wear something nice,” Robin said looking away to avoid Starfire’s tactics.

“Very well,” Starfire said.

As Robin watched his date walk away, her beauty memorized him. But that wasn’t the only thing that made him love her. She was also a wonderful ally, looked on the brighter side of a situation, and she had undying dedication. The others had told him how much she had cried when he was gone. They had spoken of how she been dedicated to finding him. “And she loves me,” Robin thought. Heading to his room, he looked at his arm. For once in his life, a defeat had brought him a victory. He laughed to himself, “Thank Slade,” he thought, “That would be the day.”

As the others went about their business, Starfire sat in her room staring at a picture she had of Robin. He hadn’t told her what happened or how he got to the tower. It was part of the mystery that he shadowed himself in. Should she ask him? Or was that a subject still a sore spot for him? He did have an ego of sorts but they loved each other. Surely he would be willing to confide in her. “Perhaps if I ask, he will not feel the pain as much,” she thought.

Outside his room, she hoped that he would be there.

“Robin? Are you in your room?”

“Hey Star, let me get the door.”

Opening the door, he stood looking into her eyes.

“Might I ask you what happened how you disappeared and what happened that day?”

Robin took a breath. The night had its pain but perhaps it was better to tell instead of keeping everything to himself.

“You sure you want to know everything? Its kinda horrific.”

“If you do not wish to tell, I will not ask you.”

“Well, when I was shot by Slade, I guess I was somehow transported to some underground lair. There were dozens of Slade’s robots. I don’t know how many of them I destroyed but I do know that they just kept on coming. Behind the hordes of robots was a small opening. My guess at the time was that it was somehow the exit. But I was wrong, guess I wasn’t thinking. Anyhow, it was another room and the HIVE was waiting for me. Jinx, Gizmo, Mammoth, and some other HIVE students just went to hell on me. At first I was able to dodge and fight back. But then I was grabbed and beaten down. Some of them took out switchblades. They cut me more for torture and yet somehow, I broke out and battled outside, breaking my communicator.

I realized then that I did not have a bat’s chance in hell of winning so I tried to make it to the tower. I ended up I the junkyard, hoping that I would have been far enough away to catch my breath. But again, I had no such luck. They kept chasing and I ended up getting hit by a car, knocking me down where they then took me and continued to torture me. I don’t know why they didn’t kill me, but my guess is to humiliate me for all the times that we stopped them. Anyhow, that night was the longest I can remember. They beat me until they ended up breaking my arm and bruised me until I passed out. I know cause when I woke up everyone had left. I found myself strapped to a table and managed to undo the leather straps. Then I tried to make it here as fast as I could. I had hoped that I would be found, but so early in the morning, nobody did.”

“But why did we not find you that morning?”

“I don’t know. Just unlucky for me.”

“Robin?”

“Yes?”

“How did you survive? So much would surely have killed any human. Are you human or something else?”

“I’m human. I guess I’m just a born survivor. I don’t like to give up.”

“I understand.”

“Is there something else? You look like you want something?”

“Might we kiss?”

Robin wrapped his unbroken arm around her waist and pulled her close. Without answering, he kissed her, not wanting to let it end. He enjoyed the feel of her soft lips and the warmth of her body. It was like a piece of heaven right in his arms.

“Yes,” Robin said with a smile as he pulled away.

Starfire blushed as she put a hand where Robin had kissed her. Every time before, it was more like a quick kiss. But that one far exceeded those ones combined.

“Hey, its getting late and tomorrow is our date. Now just remember to wear something nice and I’ve already taken care of the rest.”

“Goodnight Robin.”

“Goodnight Star.”

The next day went by relatively quickly. Robin got his cast removed that afternoon and busied himself in his room.

“Where’s Robin?” Beast Boy asked Cyborg as the two played on the Gamestation.

“I dunno. But I think he’s fine. Did you see the way he was grinning when he came back?”

“Yeah, it was kinda like he was doing something weird. Kinda creepy. Oh and I just kicked your ass again.”

“What? Hey! No fair. Rematch.”

“Well you know it’s almost time for dinner. Which means that its Robin’s turn to do the cooking.”

“Sorry I won’t be guys,” Robin said coming in dressed in a tuxedo.

“Mind explaining way the hell you’re wearing that? Wait. Don’t tell me. Kitten’s got another prom and her dad’s forcing you to take her out or he sends out his metal eating freak-a-zoids.”

Robin shook his head, but he started to smile when Starfire entered the room, dressed in an elegant light pink dress. Beast Boy and Cyborg stared at what was before them. Two of their friends looked liked they were—were they going on a date?

“You guys want to stop staring?” Robin asked.

“What—what is going on?”

“Lets just say that Star and me are going out for a welcoming back for me.”

Beast Boy and Cyborg stared, shrugged, and went back to there video game, believing that it was just a meal between friends, as weird as that was. Taking Starfire hand, Robin guided her down to the garage where he started his motorcycle. “Hold on,” he told her as he revved the engine and sped off.

“Where are we going?”

“We’re just a mile away. You’ll see soon.”

Parking the bike, Starfire stared at one of the most elegant buildings in the entire city. She continued to stare until she felt a tugging on her arm, bring her back to Earth. Robin was motioning her to follow him and another man inside. Taking their seats, the Tameranian continued to be amazed at what lay in front of her. Then she was handed a menu.

“What may I have?”

“Anything that you want.”

When the waiter came over to take their orders, Starfire, with some help of Robin, didn’t ask for a cup of mustard, although she did ask for some on the side. Taking Robin’s order, the man went away.

“Robin, this place is wondrous.”

“Glad you like it. What is it? You look like you’re about to cry.”

“Nothing is wrong. I am just so happy that I am able to spend this night with you. You mean so much to me. You are strong, courageous, and a great leader.”

“Thanks Star. But I’m the one who feels like the lucky one. You’ve got everything that anyone could ask for. You’re smart, dedicated, beautiful, kind. Do you realize how many guys would kill to have the chance to go out with you?”

As they ate, they continued to converse, enjoying the others company. Staring into the others eyes, they could have lost themselves. When they were finished, Robin paid for the meal.

“Wanna see a movie?”

“Is there one that would go with such a glorious evening?”

“Maybe.”

“Then let us see one. I wish to spend more time with you.”

Back on the bike, Robin drove the two of them to see a movie. But while Starfire watched the screen, Robin was staring at Starfire. She captivated him. She had the key to his heart. “How did this happen?” he asked himself. “How did she fall in love with me? I mean she could have any guy and she chose me.” Leaning back in his chair, he looked up to the ceiling and thanked his lucky stars. All the while, Starfire was wishing that this night would never end. For the first time in a long time, Robin was relaxing. She felt both proud of herself and happy for Robin. Proud because she had taken his mind off Slade and happy the night had been quiet. For once, crime didn’t interrupt any plans. Then, while Starfire was thinking Robin’s arm wrapped around her neck, making her smile.

When the movie ended, Robin looked at his watch.

“11:30? Damn!”

“Is something wrong? Did we make a mistake coming here?”

“No. I just didn’t know how late it was.”

“What does that mean?”

“We should get back before the others wonder what happened to us.”

“Ok.”

Back at the tower, they found it in lockdown mode. Robin smiled at Starfire. “Guess they got tired of waiting for us. You want to go out again?” Starfire shook her head. Opening the door, Robin relocked the tower. There in the darkness, standing in the door, he felt Starfire kiss him. It was so unlike her. Before, she had always asked for permission to do such a thing. “But who cares?” Robin thought wrapping his arms around her in the shadows. But instead of the kiss being one like they had experienced earlier, Starfire seemed to have become an entirely different person. She absolutely refused to stop until she ran out of breath. “Wow,” was all Robin could manage to say before the two of them headed upstairs.

As the two titans approach Starfire’s room, neither one wanted the night to end. They loved the other’s company. It was like a taste of heaven itself. “But it has to be,” Robin thought on the way up the stairs. The shadows hid his sorrow as they walked together. Once at her room, he said goodnight and began to take his leave. Yet he turned to leave, he once again felt her hand.

“What is it, Star? Something wrong?”

“Would you wish to have sex with me? On my planet, when two people love each other, they have sex. Perhaps that is different from earth. I am sorry. I must learn these things before I ask.”

She felt Robin place a hand on her lips as he smiled. Letting themselves experience each other to the fullest, Robin picked up the Tameranian and carried her into her room.

Closing the door behind them, Robin picked up where he left off. Pulling Starfire in close, he kissed her with every ounce of love that he possessed. If it was a dream, he didn’t want to wake up. For the first time, every fear of what could happen faded to black. He didn’t care that Slade had beaten him or tricked him. He didn’t care that he stared at death in the face for twenty-four hours.
