Mike was already in the water when the others got out there. He had a floating lounge chair with a cup holder. He pulled off his sunglasses and grinned as his brothers leaped into the water. Charlie sat down at the edge and dipped her feet in, testing the temperature before she slipped in delicately. The other turtles weren’t surfacing.
“We can hold our breath underwater for longer than a human,” Mike explained, paddling his chair over to the edge of the pond. He put his glasses in the cup holder and slipped into the water too. Charlie swam over to him. It was shallower there and they were able to stand. Mike reached into a Rubbermaid container on the bank and fished out a bright yellow ball. “You ever play water polo?” he asked, nodding toward two posts on the bank at the deeper side of the pond that had basketball nets nailed to them.
“Once or twice...” she said, swallowing a laugh. She’s told Don that she’d been on the swim team in high school, but she hadn’t said which team. This was going to be good. She felt a hand gently brush her foot and the other turtles surfaced all around them.
“Great!” Mike said. “You can be on my team!”
“Same teams as usual?” Don asked. He had stroked a strong hand right up her leg, over her backside, up her back, and slipped an arm around her shoulders.
“Yeah,” Mike said. “You know the rules, Charlie?”
She feigned ignorance. “I guess it’s something like basketball, isn’t it?”
“Pretty well, yeah,” Leo said. “You’re with Mikey and I... let us know if you get tired and we’ll take a break, ok?” Charlie smiled. Leo was such a sweetheart.
Suddenly, Raphael smacked the ball out of Michelangelo’s hands, and swam toward the net. Charlie was stunned - the turtles were made for swimming! Raph was rocketing through the water like a sea turtle on the National Geographic Channel. She’d have to play it cool and not exhaust herself trying to keep up with them; she’d have to use better strategy instead.
The other turtles took off after their brother, with Charlie right behind them. Raph got up to the net and sunk the ball in easily. Leonardo grabbed it as it fell through and hurled it to Mike, who had taken up a defensive position by the other net. The ball was falling down to him like a pop-fly, but before he could catch it, Donatello slammed into him, pushing him hard in the other direction.
“Get the ball, Raph!” he shouted to the red turtle. Raphael was busy being blocked by Leo, who splashed his brother in the face and made a break for the ball. Then he froze... the floating ball disappeared underwater. A moment later Charlie broke through the surface and sank a basket in her team’s net. The ball fell through and Don grabbed it. He tried to throw it to Raph, but Charlie kicked hard and launched herself out of the water, blocking it with her left hand. She kneed her boyfriend in the chest on the way down, knocking him off balance and caught the ball in her right hand. Mike’s jaw fell open as the sank the second basket in less than ten seconds.
His brain kicked in and he rocketed toward Charlie toward Raph as Don successfully got the ball to him, by splashing Charlie in the face to distract her. Don winked at Charlie and took off to help his teammate.
Charlie did a duck dive and swam over to them, hoping to snag the ball from underwater again. The site that met her eyes was spectacular - Don and Leo were wrestling underwater and she could see Mike and Raph’s legs kicking each other as they fought for the ball on the surface... she’d have to be careful that she didn’t accidentally get smoked by one of those strong legs.
As she circled around them, she watched as Don and Leo rolled over and over, each keeping the other down at the bottom where they couldn’t snag the ball on the surface. She caught Leo’s eye and pointed back to their net as she suddenly started to swim fast toward the brothers on the surface. Charlie gave a few strong dolphin kicks as she neared them and broke the surface at a fast forty-five degree angle to them. Mike laughed as he figured out what she was doing and bent his knee just in time for her to put her foot on it to launch herself over them. She grabbed the ball away from Raph and threw it blindly backward toward their net as she sailed over their heads and fell back into the water.
“Aw, shit!” she heard from Raph, even before she surfaced. Leo had gotten away from Don and had made it back to the net in time to catch the ball and make a basket.
Don and Leo wrestled for the ball. Don got it and threw it to Charlie. “What?” she thought, reaching up to catch the ball. “I’m not on his team!” Raph cam up fast behind her and grabbed her around the waist in one big arm. He caught the ball in the other and threw it easily into their basket.
“No fair!” she shouted, trying to wiggle free. He wasn’t hurting her, but there was no way she was going to get loose.
“Bite him!” Mike shouted, grabbing the ball and hurling it back to Leo. Charlie rolled her eyes and looked at Raph. There was no way she was going to bite him just to play a stupid game.
He laughed and let her go. “Sorry, Charlie,” he grinned. “I’ll be good. I promise.”
“Yeah, sure you will,” she laughed, going after the ball again.
“Charlie!” Leo shouted. The ball landed right in front of her and she grabbed it. Don and Raph were closing in fast on her. She felt an arm go around her waist and a plastron press against her back.
“Hold your breath,” Mike whispered. Charlie had just enough time to suck in some air before he ducked underwater and found herself rocketing along with Michelangelo. It as thrilling to go for a ride like that. She made a note to ask Don or Mike to take her around the pond a few times. Then Mike’s arm was gone, but the momentum kept her going forward. she surfaced under the net and sunk a basket. Mike surfaced a moment later with Donatello right behind him.
“Sorry, Charlie,” the orange turtle said. “He grabbed my ankles!”
Everyone laughed and Don swan over to Charlie to circle her with his strong arms. He tread water for them both to give her a break. “Need a rest?” he asked.
“Yeah,” she said. “It’s been a while since I played water polo... and I’m not nearly as strong as you guys! You’re such incredible swimmers, too!”
“You can sit in my chair if you want,” Mike offered. “I’ll get it.” He ducked underwater and a moment later his chair started to move across the pond, seemingly on its own.
Donatello was enjoying being close to her warm body in the cool water. Her legs brushed his as he kicked to keep the both on the surface and he rested his chin on her shoulder to smell her hair. He was glad that she was getting some fresh air and exercise, but her over-worked body had done pretty well all that it was able to. He wished he could take her out here more often.
“So,” he said, “when you told me that you were on the swim team at school, you actually meant-”
“-The water polo team,” she said. “Rookie-of-the-year my freshman year and MVP in junior and senior.”
“So when you said that you’d played once or twice-” Leo said, as Don lifted her into the chair.
“-I was lying through my teeth,” she said. she put on Mike’s sunglasses. “How do I look?”
“Fucking hot,” Don thought. He glanced at his brother’s and knew that they were thinking the same thing.
“You look like a gal who just kicked four ninjas’ asses,” Raph said, tossing her the ball. Charlie laughed and threw it high up into the air for the game to start again.
Charlie watched the brothers play for another half-hour before she felt her eyelids starting to get heavy. Mikey’s chair was really, really comfortable, and the sun was making her go all fuzzy-headed and sleepy. She was glad that the turtles were able to spend some time outside, even if they were being so rough with each other that it was like watching an NFL game.
She listened to them wrestling underwater while the ball floated on the surface and she lazily paddled the chair towards it and picked it up. She could hear muffled grunts and dull banging sounds as their shells rubbed and bumped together.
She balanced the ball on the top of the cupholder and finally allowed her eyes to close. As she drifted off to sleep, she wondered how long it would be before the boys realised that they’d lost their ball.
