“For fuck’s sake, Mikey, we are so not listening to that cd again!”
“I thought you liked The Offspring, Raph!”
“Yeah, dude, I did, before you played it fifty-fucking-million times. You’ve got hundreds of cds. Find something else,” Raphael groaned, his face covered in a graphic novel to block the light so he could nap on the passenger-side couch.
Michelangelo sighed and climbed into the back of the van to dig around through his rucksack. He produced a dozen albums and fanned them out in his big hands like a deck of cards.
“Here, Charlie,” he said, “you pick something.”
Charlie looked up from the chess game in the middle of the couch that she and Don were sharing. She flashed the orange turtle a big smile. He was such a big sweetheart.
“Hmm...” she said, looking over his offerings. It was mostly heavy rock and punk. There was an Eminem cd, and a couple of indie bands she’d never heard of, too.
“Pick whatever you want,” Mikey encouraged her, grinning.
“Check,” Donatello said next to her. He was so glad that she’d agreed to come with them. He watched her pick out a Moxy Fruvous cd, glad that his girlfriend got along so well with his brothers. Mikey reached out and moved Charlie’s only remaining knight in place to block Don’s bishop. She giggled and Michelangelo winked at her as he hopped up and went back to his seat to put the disk on. He acted like a goof, but he wasn’t stupid.
Don reached into the minifridge and pulled out a fresh can of rootbeer for Charlie. A little part of him wondered if he should be worried about the special closeness that his girlfriend shared with his youngest brother. He could see them developing a deep friendship and he didn’t know if he should feel a twinge of jealousy or not when she smiled so warmly at Mikey.
Michelangelo hit ‘play’ and belched loudly. Charlie wrinkled her nose in disgust and turned back to the chess game. Donatello smiled inwardly and shook the thoughts out of his head. He didn’t have to worry; Mikey wasn’t Charlie’s type.
“But I am,” he grinned to himself. He realized that she was looking at him and he blinked in surprise.
“Your move, Donnie,” she said, smiling sweetly. Don’s insides melted.
“You’re so pretty,” he sighed. Charlie giggled as he moved a random pawn ahead one square. She captured it right away with a rook.
“Yuck,” Raphael muttered from under his graphic novel.
“What?” Don said, absently, gently taking one of Charlie’s hands and stroking the backs of her slender white fingers with his thick green ones. He loved how soft her skin was.
“You,” Raph grumbled. “It’s disgusting, all that mushy stuff.”
“Just you wait, Raphael,” Charlie laughed, capturing another of Donatello’s pawns. “Pay attention, Donnie.”
“Wait until what?” Raphael asked, lifting the book to look at her.
“Wait until you get a girlfriend, then you’ll like mushy stuff too.” The turtles all sat up a bit and looked at each other.
“Think that’ll really happen?” Raphael asked slowly, swinging his feet down to the floor. He leaned forward and rested his elbows on his legs, his book swinging in one hand between his knees. “Cause we...” he looked away at a spot on the floor for a moment while he got his words together. “We didn’t think that this,” he gestured at their very different-looking hands that they’d inter-locked together, “could ever, y’know... happen for us.”
Charlie looked around at them all - they were all looking at her. Even Leo, who’d been very quiet for the whole trip, was glancing at her in the rear-view mirror. Charlie looked at Donnie, who smiled shyly at her an shrugged.
“Well, she said, thoughtfully, I don’t see why you can’t all meet girls... or guys,” she added after pausing for a second, just to see that her bases were covered. The turtles shuddered.
“Uh... I think we’ll just stick with girls,” Leo said, blushing a bit.
“Yeah, we like boobs,” Michelangelo added, seriously.
Charlie laughed so hard she had to grab her sides. “Okay,” she said, still giggling. “I don’t see why you can’t all meet girls... it’ll be a lot harder for you, but it shouldn’t be impossible.” She cocked her head to one side and leaned back on the couch. Don had cornered her last bishop.
“I dunno,” Leo said. “It’s hard wondering if we’ll always be alone... wondering which of us will be the last one...”
“The last one doesn’t even get buried,” Mike said quietly. “Who would know about us to do it? Maybe someone will find some old bones left in the sewer someday.”
“Nah,” Raph grumbled. “The rats’d clean it all up.”
“OKAY!” Charlie butted in, “That’s quite enough of that talk, thank you very much. No one is going to die alone and be eaten by sewer rats. Jeez! The worst-case scenario for you guys is internet dating. There’s always someone for everyone.”
“Do you really think so?” Leo asked, trying to keep his eyes on the road and not on the mirror.
“Sure I do!” Charlie smiled. “I mean, in a way, being turtles isn’t even really an issue. Humans can go their whole lives searching for the right person and sometimes they wind up alone. You guys just need to expose yourselves to females more often -”
Michelangelo snickered and tried to hide it with a cough.
“- because there’s nothing y’know ‘wrong’ with you,” Charlie continued, ignoring him. “You’re all well-rounded, kind, intelligent people, and that goes a long way in a lasting relationship. None of you has any kind of mental issues, emotional stunting, immoral thoughts or anything else... that’s the kind of crap that makes for a lousy boyfriend.”
“Well, as good as that sounds,” Leo said, “How do we actually meet girls?”
“Yeah,” Raph added, “Cause believe me, we’ve thought up a lot of ways to do it that doesn’t involve screaming, passing out, or running away, but nothing has ever worked.”
“We’ve spend thousands of hours thinking about it,” Mikey said, dejectedly.
“What about your friend at the bookstore,” Don asked. “What’s she like?”
“Lisa?” Charlie shook her head and laughed. “Well, she thinks you’re great, even though she’s never met you, and she wants to meet you... actually,” Charlie looked a little sad, “I think I’m starting to hurt her feelings a little because I keep making up excuses as to why we can’t go out after work for coffee or something. I think she might be starting to think that I’m keeping you away from her.”
“Sorry, Charlie,” Don said, putting his arm around her shoulders. “I don’t want you to lose a friend over this.”
“I know,” she said, “but I understand that this is kinda how it’ll be.” She shook her head a little. “Anyway, Lisa was wondering if you had a brother.”
Raphael and Michelangelo sat up a bit. Leo didn’t budge. He had always suspected that he’d be the last turtle. He was brave, but he didn’t know if he’d be brave enough to goof around at Hallowe’en like his two wilder brothers. He and Donnie weren’t like that - they were more reserved. They were more gentlemen than playboys. “And women like bad-boys,” he grumbled inwardly.
“What did you tell her?” Don laughed.
“I said you had three.”
“And?” Don prodded, smiling. Leo glanced back at his brother and he interacted with his new girlfriend. He, Raph, and Mike had been talking about Donatello a few nights back after he’d left to go see Charlie. Donatello was different that he used to be. Not bad different, just more... confident.
“And she was definitely interested.”
“What’s she like?” Mikey asked, hanging over the back of his seat.
Leo glanced back at Don again, trying to figure out how Don’s new confidence made him seem different. He felt a tiny jolt of pride - this was why Master Splinter wanted him to lead.
“She’s witty and shrewd, but not sarcastic,” Charlie said, thinking about her only friend other than the turtles.
Raph grunted at bit and they all laughed.
“Is she pretty?” Mike asked, sounding a tad shy.
“I think so - actually, I think I have a picture of her in my purse.” Charlie grabbed her bag and rummaged through it.
Leo glanced in the mirror and this time he met Don’s eyes. Donatello had noticed that his brother had been very quiet for the last little while.
“Here, Mikey, switch seats with me so you can see,” Donatello said, “You’re going to get a sore back, twisting around to see.”
“Thanks, bro!” Mikey said, bounding into the back to look at the picture Charlie had produced.
Don plopped down into the front seat and stretched his muscular legs out. “Want me to drive for a bit?” he asked quietly in Japanese so no one else could hear. He turned the music up a bit higher to make sure that their conversation was private.
“Nah, I’m okay,” Leo responded, also in Japanese. “I need to think and driving keeps me up here instead of back there.”
Don nodded, understanding. “Don’t write yourself off, Leo,” he said taking Mike’s orange soda out of the cupholder and sipping some. “I’ve been thinking about it a lot, and yeah, there is a certain element of bravery to getting a girl-”
“Faint heart never won fair lady,” Leo grumbled.
“Exactly. But there’s more to it than that. Remember when April broke up with that dude who smelled like cheese?”
“Yeah,” Leo said, wrinkling his nose. It hadn’t been hard to smell him on April’s clothes and in her apartment.
“She came over to see us that night because she was sad and lonely, and she told us that when you’re with the wrong one, it’s hard, but when you’re with the right one, it’s easy. That’s kinda how it is with Charlie,” Don said, glancing back over his shoulder at her. Michelangelo and Raphael were sitting on either side of her, talking about Lisa. He looked back at Leonardo. “It’s easy with her. It’s like a chain reaction; stuff keeps progressing at a steady pace and it feels... great, actually. She makes me very happy.”
“It shows, bro,” Leo smiled.
Donatello sighed and sipped at Mike’s soda again. “I guess what I’m trying to say, bro, is that I think that... well, this,” he said, with a slight head gesture toward the back of the van where his girlfriend was, “isn’t something that you can ever plan for. We all were sure that Raph would be the first, but it was me instead... so don’t write yourself off, Leo.”
Leo smiled at his brother. Don was always good at putting things into perspective.
“See, Leo?” Mike said, hoping up and shoving Lisa’s picture in front of his older brother’s face.
“Mike! I’m driving!” Leo said, whacking his hand out of the way so he could see the road again.
Mike sighed and reached forward to take the wheel for a moment so Leo could look. The picture showed Charlie and Lisa with a couple of other people who worked at the store standing outside the shop. Lisa and Charlie had an arm around each other. The camera had caught them in mid-laugh; their eyes sparkled and their hair blew lightly in the wind. Lisa’s hair was much shorter than Charlie’s; it was shoulder-length and very dark brown, arguably black, and she had dancing green eyes that seemed to look right into his. She was beautiful.
