You and me

Fuck your authority

“The boss is taking us out on a job.” Jack said, strapping his knife to his ankle. “He wants to know if you can be trusted to stay here on your own.”
I sighed. “I’ve been on a few jobs for him, why can’t I come on this one?”
“You’ll be in the way. Now, can we leave you here alone?”
“Yes.” I nodded.
“Good. We’ll be back later.” He left the room.
I sat back on the bed, sensing an opportunity. If everyone was going to be out, that meant I could escape fairly easily. But I needed to wait a few more minutes before I tried it. While I waited, I packed my backpack full of some clothes, as well as my wallet. They hadn’t given me a phone, for obvious reasons, but at least I had some ID and my bank card.
I couldn’t be certain they would all leave, but if I didn’t run now, there was no guarantee I would get another chance.
“Alright, Alex. It’s now or never.” I said to myself, walking over to the window.
Taking a deep breath, I calmed myself and slowly slid it open. I really didn’t want to creep along the ledge, but there was a camera on the front door, so I couldn’t go out the easy way.
I swung my leg out the window, ducking in order to carefully climb out. The ledge was less than a foot wide, so I had to stand on my toes. Clinging to the window frame, I looked over to the fire escape.
It was just over a couple of metres away, but it felt like a mile as I slowly shuffled along the ledge. The air was warm, and a cold breeze slowly swept over me.
I reached out, trying not to panic as I nearly slipped. Finally my hand touched the fire escape and I breathed a sigh of relief, quickly climbing over. My body was still shaking as I ran down the steps and pushed the ladder down. I didn’t have time to stop and take a breath, because there was no way of knowing when everyone would be back.
Thankfully, it was dark, which meant it was a lot easier to creep around. As I ran along the streets, trying to avoid the sparse streetlights, I wondered where I would go. I couldn’t go home, that’s the first place they would look for me.
Checking one of the street signs, I realised I was only a few blocks from my ex’s place. I began to run, trying to get there as fast as I could. We hadn’t parted on the best of terms, but I was hoping he would help.
He lived on the top floor of the building, so I had to buzz his apartment and hope he was there. I typed in his apartment number and waited. I knew that if he checked, he would be able to see me, so I looked at the camera.
“Jesus, Alex. It’s three am.” His sleepy voice came through the speaker. “What are you doing here?”
I pressed the talk button, trying not to panic. “I need help, Kieran. Can you let me in?”
“Fine.”
The door unlocked with a click, and I dashed inside. I spent the entire lift ride standing in the corner, trying not to panic. I was free, but I didn’t feel free yet.
I ran down the hall, gently knocking on his door. After a moment, it opened, and Kieran ushered me in.
“Where have you been?” He asked, locking the door. “You disappeared, and everyone’s looking for you.”
I wrapped my arms around myself, leaning against the wall. “You can’t tell anyone. I used my power to talk down some men who attacked the club, but I didn’t know who they worked for. Bane kidnapped me, I’ve been stuck in a building for nearly two weeks now. I wouldn’t have come here, but I have nowhere else to go.”
“Alright. You can stay here for a few days. I’ll make up the spare bedroom for you.” He gestured for me to follow him. “I just have one rule while you’re here. If you get caught again, this better not come back to me.”
“It won’t.” I hesitated for a moment, unsure what to say. “Look, I know I don’t deserve your help after everything that happened between us, but I really appreciate the help, and I promise it won’t come back to you.”
He sighed. “I know, but you’ve gotten yourself in deep with this, and I don’t think you even realise how bad it is. If he catches you, he’ll probably kill you.”
I didn’t reply, just helped him put the sheets on the bed. I honestly didn’t think Bane would kill me, but I was beginning to worry about what would happen if I did get caught.
He must have sensed that he’d upset me, because he suddenly stopped and pulled me in for a hug. “I’m sorry.” He said quietly, gently letting me go.
“No, you’re right.” I gave him a small smile. “I thought I was doing the right thing when I saved someone in the club, but I guess I just made a mess of things.”
“You’ve always been good at that.” He laughed a little. “But you’ve also always been good at dealing with it when you end up in a mess. You’re going to work this out.”
I hugged him again. “Thank you. I promise I’ll be out in a few days.”
He was walking up the stairs towards his office when he was stopped by Rob. He sighed, turning to look at him.
“What is it?” He asked.
“She’s gone, Boss. The window was open. She must have gone out onto the fire escape.”
Anger bubbled up in him, and he grabbed the smaller man by his shirt. “Then find her. Now.”
He tossed him aside, storming into his office. He’d trusted her, sent her out on work for him, and she’d just stabbed him in the back. Two could play at that game. As soon as he got her back, he was going to punish her, push her further than she had ever been before.
I sat on the couch, tying up my shoes. I’d been at Kieran’s for a few days now, and it was time to move on. Which meant getting out of Gotham until Bane was gone.
“Where will you go?” Kieran asked, sitting down across from me.
“Back to Central City. I still have people there I can stay with until the heat dies down.” I sighed. “I guess I’ll come back eventually, but I don’t know.”
Standing up, I fixed the hem of my shorts. I didn’t notice him coming over until he hugged me tightly.
“Be careful out there. He’ll be looking for you.” He said quietly.
“I will.” I hugged him back, then headed out.
I jogged down the street to the nearest ATM. I assumed they were probably watching my card usage, but I was hoping they were far enough away that I could get cash out and be gone before they arrived.
Typing in my PIN, I withdrew as much as I could. Then I caught a taxi to the train station. It was a big place, and I was hoping it was crowded enough that I could hide among the people.
The line for tickets was long, and I was growing anxious. Every second I spent waiting was a second closer to being caught, and I just had no idea what would happen if I was.
I looked around, tapping my fingers against my arm as I kept an eye on the people around me. Maybe no one was coming for me. Maybe I was going to be safe.
Then I saw them, walking through the side door. I stepped back out of the line, panic setting in. Pushing my way through the crowd, I tried to get out as fast as possible. I didn’t want to run and draw attention to myself, so I moved steadily but fast.
I thought I was free and clear, pressing my hand to the door to opened it. But then I felt someone grab my arm and a gun push into my side. I didn’t turn, just sighed, trying not to cry.
“You didn’t really think he would just let you leave, did you?” A familiar voice said, and I recognised it as Jack’s. He pushed me out the door, to the edge of the road as a van came driving up.
“If he’s planning on killing me, could you just shoot me right now and get it over with?” I said quietly.
He shoved me inside the van, sending me tumbling onto the metal floor. “He’s not going to kill you. But you betrayed his trust, and you are going to be punished.”
I didn’t fight back as my wrists were tied up again. It wouldn’t have helped, even if I hadn’t been too terrified to move. I could feel Jack’s eyes on me, but there was no way I wanted to talk to him.
“Why did you run?” He asked. “You had more freedom than you could expect from anyone else, and he was beginning to trust you. Was it worth it?”
I glared back at him, keeping my mouth shut. There was a lot I could have said, and a lot I wanted to, but I was going to go into whatever happened next with as much dignity as I could muster.
Sitting in silence for the whole drive, I didn’t react as I was pulled out and dragged into the building. My face didn’t betray the terror that was flowing through me, but I knew I wouldn’t be able to hold back the panic for much longer.
I was thrown into a tiny basement room and the rope around my wrists removed. Before I could relax though, Jack handcuffed my hands behind me.
“I don’t know what he’s going to do to you, so if I never see you again, it was nice knowing you.” He said quietly.
I still didn’t reply, keeping my eyes on his. I was feeling very vulnerable with my hands cuffed, and I stepped backwards against the wall.
He sighed, leaving the room and locking the door behind him. I slid to the floor, shifting around and bending so I could get my hands past my feet and to my front.
I waited, sitting there on the cold concrete floor, but no one came. Outside I probably looked calm, relaxed even, but inside I was fuming. I was angry and terrified, and I was blaming myself, even though I’d done what I thought was the right thing to keep myself safe.
