Charlie laughed.
“I’m not going to win anymore either, am I?”
“Find another battle to wage, Lucy. This war is over.”
“Did you mean it, when you said I was pretty?”
“Ehh…,” he wavered his hand.
“Jerk!”
“That’s me. You look nice, it’s been years, but you’re unmistakable, it’s everything else that was ugly.”
“So you do think I’m pretty?”
He just exhaled a plume of smoke.
“I don’t know who I am anymore, I’ve been left behind, I think you were the only one thrilled to see me, and I don’t think your welcome was completely sincere.”
“You’ll figure it out. I did.”
She stood there a moment staring at the stars, “Charlie?”
He just looked at her.
“I shouldn’t have did what I did, can we start over?”
He shrugged.
“Please? Pretty please? We’re both missing something. I think I know what it is.”
“I forgave you a long time ago.”
“It was nice talking to you, Charlie,” she went back home.
He finished his cigarette.
Lucy hadn’t talked to him much for a few days, mostly just watching him mull about and notice that even the people who used to hate him are more friendly to him, especially after they found out he struck Patricia out during tryouts. She’d watch some of their practices. She felt the hate for him drain, though she tried not to, old habits die hard, yet with how her insults slide right off him, he never lost his wit, if anything, it was stronger, it was more playful banter, than malicious, she looked forward to it, for other reasons.
“I’m throwing a party tonight, you coming, Charlie “ Violet asked.
“Hmm… I might swing by, I dunno.”
“You say that all the time, you know you don’t have anything better to do and you come anyway! Just say yes, already!”
“I might want to just chill at the wall, or the tree.”
“You’re impossible sometimes,” she rolled her eyes, “see you at the party.”
“Look who it is, boys! Mr. Hot stuff! You think you’re so big and bad now, since you joined the baseball team,” Thibault approached Charlie in the hallway.
“I don’t feel that way at all, it’s just to pass some time,” he shrugged.
“Yeah, yeah, I see your smug face!”
Lucy was watching, “shit, Charlie doesn’t fight, is somebody gonna step in? So much for friends.
“What’s wrong with you, you gotta small man complex, or something?”
“I gotta big fist, that’s what I got,” Thibault swung at him.
Charlie weaved back and fourth, stepping around a punch, tripping Thibault. Lucy catches his face.
“He looks like he’s playing with him.”
Thibault gets up fuming, rushing at him, Charlie continues dancing around his assault, before landing one good kick to his chest, sending Thibault crashing down in to the lockers, never even taking his hands out of his pockets.
“Man, you need to chill,” Charlie walked off, “maybe seek therapy.”
“Charlie, what did you do to my sister, she’s been acting odd, since she talked to you that night.”
“What’s she doing?”
“Being nice to me and Rerun, she doesn’t bitch and moan as much.”
“Maybe she realized, the old her has no place here,” he sorted through his lunch.
“I thought for sure, she was going to try and sabotage me and Patty’s relationship,” Schroeder added.
“Yeah, that woman is something else,” Charlie smiled.
“Did you lay in to her, or something,” Linus glared.
“You know I don’t like confrontation like that.”
“Well then, what did you two discuss,” Linus wondered.
“Call it… a rebirth.”
Charlie and Schroeder smoked outside during the last bit of lunch, Lucy walked over to them, digging a cigarette from his pack in his cargo pocket.
“Do something about it,” she threatened.
He snatched his Zippo from her, lighting her cigarette. They stood in continued silence for a while.
“You and Patty doing good,” she spoke up.
“Yeah, why?”
“Just curious.”
“You hoping things go south, so you can shoot your shot?”
“Nope,” she released a plume of smoke, “I think she’s good for you.”
“Ah. Thanks.”
Continued silence until they were done.
Lucy stopped Patricia as they were getting ready to leave class, “Peppermint Patty, can I ask you something?”
“Shoot, Lucy.”
“Do you… ummm… still harbor feelings for Charlie?”
She just raised an eyebrow and smiled.
“Yes, or no,” she rolled hers.
“Not so much. I mean, if he asked me out, I’d go for it, but I’m not obsessed like I used to be. Like Chuck sez; whatever happens, happens.”
“Is that so?”
“You got a thing for him?”
“I’m just… still getting a feel for everybody, so I don’t step on any toes, is all.”
“Oh, that’s all it is,” Patricia lead them out the door.
“That’s it. See ya Trish.”
Charlie spotted Lucy walking home by herself, sneaking up behind her.
“Lucy,” he whispered in her right ear, circling as she turned.
“Charlie,” she jumped, seeing him in front of her, when she turned around.
“Why you by yourself?”
“If you must know; Violet and Shermy, Patty and Schroeder, Frieda and Franklin, and Linus with your sister, are having a date thing. When did that happen by the way?”
He lit a cigarette, “funny story; Sally kinda gave up, and dated… that Harold Angel kid, it didn’t end well, and he stepped up to the plate.”
“I bet she’s thrilled.”
“Ooh yeah.”
“Well, I’d better get home.”
“Lemme drive you. We can go get something to eat, on the way, I know I could eat something. These new people bought J. J.’s Diner,” he lead her to his car.
“This is your car!”
“Behold… the Swordfish.”
“Why Swordfish?”
He shrugged, “It just came to me.”
“At least you’re still weird.”
“Trish souped it all up, hang on to something,” he pulled out.
Lucy was a bit scared when it smoked tires, and the engine screamed. Charlie put on some rock music, soon she caught herself laughing, getting pinned, bounced around her racing seat, actually cheering his spirited driving all the way to the diner, now named Ollies. They chatted some, she enjoyed his company, they went home at a slower pace, but the ride was nice nonetheless. Later on that night, Charlie was in the kitchen and caught a glimpse of somebody moving in his backyard, grabbing his old bat, he stopped at the backdoor, it was Lucy at Snoopy’s doghouse. It had fallen in disrepair. Her head was down, she stood there a good few minutes before dropping something, and walking away, her face was shiny with tears, barely lit by the street lights. Once she was gone, he stepped out, hearing the Van Pelt front door shut, flowers jn the old dog dish. He sat on the back step and smoked one, staring at the stars.
Linus came home to find Lucy had cried herself to sleep on the couch.
“Hey… wake up, Lucy.”
“What, what is it, Linus,” she opened her eyes.
“Are you okay?”
“Yeah, I’m fine,” she sat up.
“Looks like you were crying.”
“I just went to see an old friend, that’s all.”
Linus looked around in thought, seeing a few flowers missing from a flowerpot.
“Yeah, I visit him too, from time to time.”
“Linus,” she stood up, “one thing that hasn’t crossed my mind, I noticed you finally gave up that blanket.”
“Sure did, sis.”
“What happened to it?”
“I finally let him keep it. Anything else I can help you with?”
“I think I’m fine. Good night little brother,” she went upstairs.
First baseball game of the season, everybody was in the stands, there was quite a ruckus whenever the star players were at play, it looked like a easy win. Frieda drew attention to the group to Lucy, tapping on Linus and Violet, Lucy was nearly on her feet watching Charlie at bat. There was a crack, the ball flew, an outfielder caught it, throwing it hard to second base, the second baseman tried to tag Charlie, as he slide around him stealing it, marked safe. Lucy started to cackle, quickly covering her mouth.
“He’s pretty good, eh, Lucy,” Marcie asked.
“He’s okay.”
“Yeah, he his,” she glanced at the others.
Their pitch, the top players, Patricia, Roy, 5, and Charlie were killing the other team. Lucy was on the edge of her seat as he pitched, winning the game by eight points. In Lucy’s mind, she cheered louder than everybody else. The teams congratulated each other, and started to make their leave, Lucy tried to compose herself as they left the stands.
“I know that face,” Schroeder smiled.
“What face,” Lucy glared.
“We all know, Lucy… even I know. Hurry up and get to him already,” Sally smiled.
Lucy rushed down to the field as Charlie was walking out of the batter box, making a beeline to him.
“Heads up, Chuck “ Patricia yelled, pointing.
He turned to see Lucy run up to him, placing her lips right on his.
“Well that’s one way to celebrate the first game,” he smiled.
“I love you! I can’t fight it, I’m in love with you, please tell me you love me too!”
Their friends were tense, watching, waiting.
“Lucy Van Pelt, as I live and breath… and love you too,” he went in for another kiss.
Everybody was quick to pull out their phones, his team cheered.
“I found what I was missing.”
“What is it?”
“I have baseball, good friends, the only thing missing, was you.”
“Awww,” Patricia cooed.
“I love you, Charlie Brown.”
“I love you too, Lucy Van Pelt,” he kissed her again.
