Our Hearts beat as One

Betty jerked and turned around only to bump into the guy she was thinking of and had to seize the collar of his shirt to steady herself. She didn’t even become aware of Reggie’s arm supporting her, around her waist.
‘Easy Blondie! I didn’t mean to surprise you’ he said, smiling. He caught a whiff of her mild cologne and his mind was suddenly a bit foggy.
Just then, Betty inched herself apart and apologized. She was so lost that she hadn’t realized someone coming so close behind her.
No! This can’t be right. Not again, she thought.
Most definitely not! He thought.
Her bangs covered her eyes and it took all of Reggie’s willpower to resist the temptation to move them behind her ear.
Reggie gave her an admiring glance. ‘You look stunning.’
The black and white striped dress completely flattered her figure, hugging her at all the right places. She wore no jewellery. Just a timepiece. And she kept her hair down for a change. She looked dazzling.
Betty stared down at her feet and mumbled a ‘thank you’. Reggie’s patent smirk returned. ‘You don’t know how to take compliments now, do you?’
‘I am just not that used to them.’
Veronica interrupted, ‘Well, that’s not true.’ She extended her hand which he took.
‘Veronica Lodge. I am the best friend.’
‘Reggie Mantle. I am the guest.’
‘Pleasure.’
‘All mine. Happy Birthday.’
‘Thanks and welcome.’
Reggie joined the gang in the lounge. Veronica had chosen a navy sequined top and a black mini. He looked impressed. But he found it hard to focus solely on her. Time and again, his eyes would settle on Betty and he’d inadvertently find himself smiling. She even caught his gaze once but he instantly recovered and looked away.
‘He had come! He actually made it’ Betty smiled to herself.
Reggie noticed her talking excitedly to Chuck, and then laughing at what looked like some sort of a private joke. Her grin was contagious, child-like.
Ron was now on the dance floor with Jughead. Only she could ask this of him. And he submitted to Her Higness. Theirs was the most complicated bonding. As different as chalk and cheese, neither would agree with the other. Nevertheless, they were inseparable.
Opposites do attract!
With his hand extended out, he said ‘Dance?’
‘Huh?’
‘May I have the honour?’
‘I am not that good.’
‘That’s not a problem. I’ll lead.’
She nodded.
She placed her hand in his. Just as they reached the floor, the number changed to Enrique’s Baillamos. a/n: Dance coming up!
