Chapter 4
Betty flipped through the book she'd brought without really reading it. She couldn't contain her excitement. Two weeks. It had been two weeks since Reggie had told her about the reunion, and she had discovered the invitation in the mailbox. Two torturous weeks. And now she was finally at the airport, waiting to board her flight. She could hardly wait!
She pulled her fluffy beanie further down, covering her hair completely and stretching out the knitted hat. While she didn't particularly mind being recognized, she'd preferred not to be stressed out by all the people crowding around her asking for tips and signatures.
Of course, she realized, the Great Mantle didn't share this sentiment at all. Lately he had taken to texting her, having obtained her number from her agent and insisted they keep in contact to plan their great scheme. That's not all he had done, however. He had also asked her to book his flight for him – a direct flight from Los Angeles to Riverdale, so she knew he would be appearing at the airport to board the same flight she was going to. And when she noticed the overbearing crowd of excited squeals and flashes of light from cameras, she knew it would be him.
Amidst all the limbs of people she could see security guards keeping him safe from all the people trying to get at him. She pulled her beanie even lower, hoping he wouldn't recognize her and direct even more of that attention towards her. She wanted to go low profile.
But when the crowd began moving towards her, Betty knew she didn't have a chance in hell. The crowd then somehow enveloped her, and her friend plopped down into the seat beside her.
“Who's that girl?!”
“She's so lucky!”
“She's not his girlfriend, is she?”
“No way!”
“Whew,” Reggie exhaled. “It's hard being amazing, isn't it?”
Betty shook her head. Her partner simply wore sunglasses as his disguise. The damn thing attracted more attention than otherwise. I mean, who wore shades inside an airport?
“What's with the hat?” Reggie asked, lowering his shades a little to eye the beanie.
She sighed, giving up and pulling the hat off. She heard gasps of surprise as her identity was revealed.
“It's Betty Cooper!”
“I love her show!”
“Wait, so he's dating her?”
Betty wanted to yell out that they were just friends, but she knew they would take her need to correct them as defensiveness. They always assumed the worst.
“You couldn't be subtle for just one day?” Betty asked with some annoyance. Already the crowds, with their flashing cameras and giggles was unnerving her.
“Sorry babe. No can do,” Reggie chirped merrily. Betty sighed and sunk deeper into the seat. She could feel her vision worsening from all the camera flashes she was exposed to. She had never been more happy to hear the boarding announcement.
“Will passengers in first class please come through the boarding gate? I repeat-”
“That's us, Blondie. Let's go,” Reggie rose from his seat, snapping his fingers at some man beside him who she hadn't noticed before. The man straightened abruptly, and took hold of the luggage-filled trolley.
“Actually – that's you,” She flaunted her ticket at him. “I'm traveling economy,”
He stared at her like she was crazy. “But... why?”
“I wanted to keep a low profile,” She shrugged.
“Babe – let me tell you something. When you're childhood friends with the Great Mantle, there is no low profile,” He said. She cleared her throat and pointed to the dwindling line for First Class.
“You should hurry up and go, or you'll end up having to line up with the Business Class people,” She said. He gasped, and hurried towards the boarding gate. Betty grinned and settled down in her seat as he took the majority of the crowd with him. Unfortunately for her, she missed the look he threw her over his shoulder. If she had caught it, she may have been more prepared.
“Betty Cooper, right?” The air stewardess asked her with a warm smile the moment she stepped into the plane. Betty blinked. She was wearing her beanie, and still they recognized her? She smelled a rat. A Mantle rat. “Here. Your seat is right over there next to Mr Mantle,”
Reggie was in view, patting the seat beside him with a giant grin on his face. She sighed, and resigned herself to her fate.
“What the hell?” was all she could say when she sat down. Someone grabbed her on-board luggage - a simple tote - and she spun around in surprise. An air stewardess smiled at her as she stowed her bag above her.
“And here you thought you outsmarted me,” He said, lowering the shades and winking at her. Already irritated at having her low profile plans ruined, she snatched the sunglasses off his face. “Hey!”
“And pray tell, Reggie Mantle, what innocent soul did you get to sacrifice his or her seat so you could trap me right beside you?” She asked.
“What are you talking about? These are my seats,” He said in annoyance. “After you informed me of the flight you booked me in for I had my agent get me these seats,” He stretched his arms over the back of the seats on his left and right.
“And I'm guessing you didn't get them for me,” She said.
“Haha, no. I got them for me. The Mantle doesn't want to be rubbing elbows with simpletons,” He said.
“Someday, I'm going to take a needle to that hot air balloon you call your head, Reg,” She said as she buckled up into her seat, accepting her fate.
“And I love you too, Blondie,” He said, watching her put on her seat belt. When she was done, he leaned towards her. “Besides, Bets, we need to do some planning. We haven't come up with ideas on how to woo them yet,”
She sighed. “Do we really need plans? I mean, it's not like those ever worked out. Or have you forgotten senior year? I say we wing it and back each other up,”
“No way! I am not leaving things up to chance. So – I was thinking something along the lines of getting Ron really, really drunk, then taking her to my room and making sweet love to her. And you can probably do something similar with carrot top,”
“Reggie!” She gasped.
“What? Oh, don't give me that look. You know how desperate we are,” He said. “I'd do anything to make Ron mine now, Bets. I feel like I've spent too long becoming someone impressive enough for her instead of actually impressing her,”
She sighed. “Fine. But not that idea – what else have you got?”
“Well, we can get Chloroform from the nearby drugstore and-”
Betty knew it was going to be a long, long flight.
“For the last time – no! We are not using any drugs on Ron and Archie!” Betty exploded as they were exiting the plane. The air stewardess who had been ushering them out stared at the two stars with wide eyes. Betty lowered her voice. “We are not getting arrested for this, Reg!”
“Fine fine. I guess you're right – we just have to wing it,”
She sighed. They'd spent the whole flight arguing and brainstorming, just to come back to the same idea she'd had in the beginning. She couldn't deny though, that it had both been really fun and really frustrating scheming with Reggie.
“You'd think they'd roll out the red carpet for my return to Riverdale,” Reg snorted as they walked through the airport.
“It's the middle of the night, Reg. Everyone's asleep,” She reminded him.
“Yeah. Next time – I pick the flight,” He said. “Where are you headed now?”
“My agent booked me a room at Lodge Hotel,” She said.
“Oh. Ronnie's new place, huh? Maybe I'll spend my last days there, just to see what it's like. In the meanwhile, I'm gonna head home. Spend some time with the 'rents,”
“Sounds great,” She smiled, thinking of her own parents who now lived in Miami. “Well, I'm gonna take a cab to my hotel,”
“How about we share?” He asked, and she contemplated this. She'd already spent what had felt like a year-long flight with Reggie. But what the heck – what was twenty more minutes with him?
“Sure,” But when she called the cab, she realized that she was wrong – twenty more minutes made a huge difference.
“What do you mean you've never heard of Reggie Mantle?!” Reggie demanded of the cab driver.
“I just never have!” The cabbie replied. “You're not in any of those girly, sappy movies are you?”
“My movies are not sappy!” Reggie protested. Betty had never been so happy to get out of a cab. “Yo, Bets!” Reggie called as the cabbie unloaded her luggage. One large suitcase with wheels. Lucky she'd brought so little – it could barely fit among all of Reggie's stuff. “I hired a limousine for tomorrow. Let's knock Ron and Archie dead, alright?”
“Sure,”
“I'll pick you up at 7, Blondie. Wear something nice,”
She rolled her eyes. “Of course I will, Reg. I'm not showing up to the reunion in rags,” He grinned and she heard a snippet of Reggie's continuing argument with the taxi driver before it drove out of earshot. She laughed to herself, then made her way into the hotel.
Exhausted as she was by the time she entered the lobby, she couldn't help feeling awed by the hotel setup. The entire lobby floor was covered in plush, red, velvet. A large chandelier hung from the ceiling, lights reflecting off its many dangling jewels. Despite being quite late into the night, there were still people bustling about. Some bellboys and various other hotel staff. Some were fancily-dressed customers of the hotel, still loitering about.
Somehow she managed to pull herself out of her awed country girl-imitation and approach the counter. On the way a bellboy offered her his services, but she declined. She had only one suitcase after all. And it had wheels.
“Excuse me, I'm Betty Cooper. I'm checking in,” She handed her ID over to the woman at the counter, who smiled professionally. Betty was expecting her to turn up her nose at the blonde, looking over her beanie and knitted cardigan and writing her off as someone who couldn't possibly afford the place. But the staff didn't, and Betty made a note to praise Ronnie on her excellent staff.
“Yes, we have a Betty Cooper booked in for a week, in the penthouse grand suite,” Betty frowned. She remembered giving Trevor clear instructions that she'd wanted a modest room – as modest as it could get at Lodge Hotel anyway. And she definitely told him to stay clear of the fancy penthouse suites.
“I'm sorry, but I think you've got me wrong. I definitely didn't book a suite of any kind,” She said. The woman just smiled at her kindly, then handed her a letter and the cardkey to her room.
“If you have any issues with the room at all, please don't hesitate to tell us,” The woman said, ignoring her comments. Betty stared at her, confused. Eventually she felt stupid just standing there, so she approached the elevator. Inside was a uniformed man standing by the elevator buttons.
“What floor, miss?” he asked.
“Oh. Uh-” She held up her cardkey and read off the number. “2502,”
“Floor 25 it is then,”
She opened the letter as the elevator travelled up twenty-five floors, and wasn't surprised to find Veronica's handwriting inside.
You little blonde minx! You didn't think I'd find out that you've booked a room in my hotel? How could I not know when a celebrity has her sight set on my hotel? Well, you've come to the right place sister – I've gotten you the best of the best. And it's on the house. I can't wait to see you!
Love, Ronnie.
Betty sighed and leaned back against the elevator wall. It was exactly like Ronnie to do something like this. Even though she really couldn't accept. She'd tell Ronnie that tomorrow, for sure.
And nothing would stop her.
Not the complementary champagne. Not the award-winning design of the room. Not the view of Riverdale from the glass windows. And definitely not the huge, comfy bed that sucked her in and put her to sleep the moment she got into it.
