Author's note: Hello, hello! There's a very prosaic reason why there were no updates. First holidays came along and I spent most of them in a jovial state of mind and body, and this lasted for a bit too long. Sadly the moment all of that passed the landlord decided that I must move. Ouch. Given that I've spent 16 years of my life in this dwelling you can imagine the sheer amount of trouble this caused. Right now I'm in the process of moving. Hopefully you can understand that I simply had no time to write while I looked for a new place, yet alone the proper mood. I somehow managed to write up this simple chapter because I knew I had to come up with something (anything!) before I move. Please understand that I'll be online until the end of the week (probably) and then there will be yet another period of no updates. My new place doesn't have Internet access so I'll have to wait until the tech guys set everything up. My rough estimate is that all should be up and running during the first half of February, and you'll get regular updates from there on. Thank you for your patience! As for this chapter you'll see what became of Melusine's effort to help Alex, and the stage is set for future events.
In response to my reviewers:
FS – We pretty much settled everything already so there's no need for me to repeat myself – a simple thank you will suffice!
sabaku lotus – Thank you for the highest praise. I'm not dropping it no matter what, so no worries. Different strokes for different folks as they say, but I'm still glad you like it despite the incest. I have no sisters, thus the fascination. Since Melusine will get her share of the action, I hope that'll please you. Have a nice day, enjoy life!
Chapter Four: Two Failures That Lead To Success
By MrPunchMelusine lingered a bit before her hand very slowly opened the door of the boys bedroom, and with equal care she ventured to peek inside. All she saw was a dimly illuminated room, an empty bed on one side and a bundle on the other. She waited for a few moments before opening the door just wide enough for her to squeeze through, and once inside she remained perfectly still, just listening. Eventually she could hear deep and calm breathing, and being somewhat experienced as a prowler she accurately concluded that the boy wasn't pretending. Despite that she remained calm and as collected as her weakened state allowed, and her eyes darted here and there in search for a possible escape route or unlikely traps. With her magical power drained during the complicated journey and the consequent lack of sleep she wasn't as sure in herself as usually. She was quite a strong girl, but from what she was told the people of this world were prone to having a vast plethora of powers and capabilities which she couldn't counter without her magic, and that worried her.
'Just do it, don't think, don't think! You're just scaring yourself!' She thought, touching a few significant vials in her pocket. At the moment they were her only reliable weapon and defense, and for a moment her fingers clasped around one of them, feeling the power within. They were all quite clearly marked in such a manner that she could tell which is which without looking at them. It was a neat and useful trick, but after a bit of deliberation she abandoned the idea altogether. Within one of the vials was a very potent knock-out powder, and once let out in the air anyone within its reach would fall into a very deep sleep. However, she didn't trust her judgment at the moment and merely frowned, considering the possible and likely complications that could arise.
'I'm tired.' She thought to herself to drive off more unpleasant notions, and with a light step approached the slumbering boy.
Despite everything she smiled at his sleeping face, quite smitten by his good looks and his obviously sexy body. She shook her head a bit, chasing off all indecent thoughts. The night was indeed too overwhelming in more ways than one, and the poor witch who was more than aware of her incomparable drive had to acknowledge that she was truly miserable, and would remain that way for the next week or so.
'At least I hope it'll be a week because otherwise I'll… ugh. Stop.' She shook her head again, pinched herself and inhaled deeply.
The moment was thus seized, and she focused her everything into a single-minded purpose. There were no more distracting thoughts or feelings, and with a ferocious and downright horrifying look in her eyes she stared at the unaware boy. She could clearly see him, or rather his actual non-physical form, and within the shining radiance a few black shapes which grew almost imperceptibly slow. They were situated in the area which would correspond with that of his heart, and though her inner monologue was banished she truly understood what she was looking at precisely because of it. Though emotionally a flat line some distant relative of surprise managed to emerge. She was familiar with the spell of fascination, and the insidious blackness within him was precisely what she knew she'd find, but there was something too familiar about the energy that fueled it. You could accurately deduce from where a person came if you looked deep within them or saw their magic at work, but the odd mixture she was staring at gave conflicting signatures. They were simply impossible.
The spell itself was broken by someone and thankfully didn't hold anymore sway except as a slow poison, and her keen eye tried to find the remnants of the defensive spell that was used to dispel the darkness, and yet once more she found herself disturbed. Nothing was there except Alex himself, and even when she strained and viewed him as if under a microscope there was nothing unusual or magical at work within him. A few shadows of memories told her that he did come in contact with magic, even very significant magic, but none persisted in him. As all people he had bits and pieces of significant others entangled within himself, and the presence of his siblings and parents was present in a high degree, but none of those things was magic.
She exhaled and almost fell over as her normal consciousness returned. She wiped her sweaty forehead with a weak, trembling hand and despite her resolve had to sit down on the floor. A general weakness set in, and for a few minutes she remained to sit perfectly still despite the onslaught of painful cramps that spread out through her body.
"Shit." She muttered almost inaudibly after seizing control. She knew that she was tired, but she didn't think the situation was this serious. She made a quick decision, trusting in his benevolence.
'First I'll pull that thing out of him and then I'll politely ask his heart to give me a bit of strength. He'll be tired in the morning, that's all…' She reasoned, and with a nod stood up once more.
She concentrated again, and this time reached towards him, putting her hand just barely above his chest. She felt the evil spell stir inside him with fear, and despite everything she smiled, knowing that for something like this she needed barely an atom of her power.
Then there was pain. It shot up like a fiery thunderbolt through her, tearing her up from the inside like the claws of a wild tiger. There was a flash within her, an image of clenched teeth and angry eyes which honestly wanted to hurt her. Their intention was fulfilled, and Melusine barely contained a scream as she fell back, her whole body twisting in silent agony. It lasted for barely a few seconds, but the moment she opened her eyes she knew she was in trouble. The pain was temporary, and though everything ached she somehow managed to crawl to the window before pulling herself up. She heard fast footsteps, and then a surprised gasp behind her. Without even looking back she jumped out, and began to fall. The feeling was almost liberating, and she turned around to see a head peeking out from the window while her own voice rang out through the night.
"Broom!" She yelled out and in a split second her outstretched hand gripped the familiar wood that continued to carry her higher and higher, away from the failure. She could see the city glittering below her, and she properly mounted her vehicle before letting out a sigh.
"Take me to…" She began, but was cut short by an angry ear piercing shriek, and before she could even feel the pain of the impact she was once more falling down, and all she could see was a rainbow trail that flew high up above her and then coiled like a serpent before rapidly descending once more towards her and gaining speed with each second. However her broom reacted much in the same way a loyal dog would, and with a quick swish it flew right beside the attacker, disturbing his trajectory for a very brief but precious moment. Once more the broom was in the witches hand, and with a graceful and often practiced move she mounted it without stopping.
"Dammit! Not even a clean getaway? Am I cursed or something?" Melusine groaned and coughed, looking back to see if she was still followed. She could still see the rainbow behind her, though the person who was using it was just a vague reddish shape, and the shape was becoming clearer and clearer too fast for comfort.
"Fine! Let's do it the hard way!" She almost growled, and the broom increased its speed to its maximum. The witch once more started to gain altitude, not caring one bit for the reason why she was attacked or who her attacker even was. She was tired, humiliated and hurting all over, and this nuisance didn't do much to improve her mood. Quite the contrary, she was getting angry, and with anger came that well-needed urge to win.
She didn't need to look back to know that her pursuer was very close and that it was out of the question to even attempt using her magic – it was simply reduced to a smoldering pile of ashes. She examined her options, and came up with a makeshift plan.
'My experience will prevail!' She thought to herself, grinned, and quickly changed her course. She saw the big park on her first flight to the city, and it was there that she hoped to lure the rainbow-riding devil and subdue it, one way or the other. She fished out a small vial from her pocket, neutralized its content with a muttering and while giving the broom a clear order turned around to see where her enemy was.
"Crap." She simply stated, and instinctively made a sharp turn. The attack came from below, and the moment the now obviously female attacker missed her mark she managed to stop dead in her flight and charge once more, this time with her fist raised. Their eyes met, and Melusine clearly saw that the girl was beyond reasoning. Those eyes were the eyes of a valkyrie eager to kill, and her fury was almost inhuman.
It was in times like this that Melusine was at her best, and to add insult to injury she allowed the attacking redhead to draw close and have her strike. She aimed for the worst possible place – the head. The impact would surely break her jaw, but Melusine evaded it and returned the favor. Her punch struck the redhead flat in the face, sent her downwards with a surprised yelp and almost broke her nose, but it didn't stop her.
The chase continued, and the moment Melusine saw her goal she descended, landed on the green soil by the lake and threw the vial towards the girl, bracing herself for the inevitable. Already well beyond anger Julie evaded whatever was thrown at her and simply swooped the witch off her feet and slammed her against a tree, making her yell out in pain.
"YOU! WHAT DID YOU DO TO MY BROTHER!" Julie roared, squeezing the witches throat with all her might. Melusine yielded, raising her hands in a gesture of surrender. A painfully long moment passed before Julie allowed her to breathe, though she still held her by the neck. The witch gasped for air, but Julie felt neither pity nor remorse.
"I… I'll tell you everything." She wheezed out, and her hat fell to the ground. A few deep breaths followed, and Julie once more slammed her against the tree.
"TALK!" She growled, and the corners of Melusine's lips twitched as if in a barely suppressed smile.
"He doesn't love you. He loves only me, and we've been together for a whole year. I'm also pregnant, and the baby is his." She muttered, and hit dead center. A tremor passed through Julie's arms, and in that precise moment of anguish Melusine raised her green eyes to meet Julie's.
The realization came too late, and before Julie could even curse herself for falling for such an obvious lie her mind was already struggling for consciousness.
"No magic, no punches and no blood. Just me. Just my will and your will. Or would you prefer it that I actually used some of my vials? Even the sleeping powder would be enough, and the other stuff? Well, the other stuff would burn through your flesh or scatter it all around this lovely place…." Melusine whispered, enjoying every second of Julie's struggle to break free. Her blue eyes were filled with hate and loathing, but her body couldn't move even the tiniest muscle. The witch smiled, coughed, and looked away. Julie tried to seize her chance, but it was no chance at all. The witch was still inside her somehow, and Julie felt like she was a toddler fighting against a giant. She couldn't win.
"You should count yourself lucky. If you didn't let go of my throat I'd stab you with my little knife. Not that I wanted to, but you were hysterical." Melusine spoke as she almost casually walked behind the petrified girl, and a moment later a small but sharp looking knife was displayed before her increasingly teary eyes.
"And what about my broom? Even if the vials, the knife, and my very will failed to subdue you my broom would simply impale you from behind. Did you even notice that it isn't just a dumb piece of wood?" She whispered in her ear, and then walked away. Julie could hear a kind of rustling and muffled words, doubtlessly some orders which were given to the broom. Her suspicion was confirmed when she heard a whooshing sound as it flew away, but it didn't matter much. She knew she failed, for she was sure that the witch will definitely have both her and Alex, and doubtlessly Jack and Katie. She wished she never read that book about witches. She tried to speak, but couldn't.
"Hm? What is it? Talk, but kneel first." Melusine once more walked in front of her, and Julie's legs obeyed. She found herself kneeling before the witch and crying quite earnestly.
"D-do what y-you w-want with me but please, PLEASE let my brothers and sister alone!" She managed to whimper out, and she heard the witch sigh.
"Foolish girl… you need to be taught a lesson, and I'll be the one to educate you." Melusine muttered and picked up her hat. Before Julie could say anything else she felt her mind going out like a candle in a hurricane, and she unceremoniously fell face down in the dirt.
Melusine sighed and rolled her over before sitting down.
"I want to sleep." She said to herself, and her luck finally kicked in. The broom flew back with her brown leather bag and offered it to her.
"Thank you old friend." The witch patted it tenderly, and with increasingly shaky hands pulled out a dusty old map and something similar to a compass from the bag, as well as her glasses. She strained to see the lines before cursing herself under her breath and very slowly walking to the nearest lamp while leaning onto her broom. She studied the map for a few minutes and consulted the magical compass, nodding approvingly. There were multiple entry points nearby, and beyond them a sanctuary untouched for at least a century.
With some considerable help from the broom she managed to drag Julie's unconscious body towards a certain tree, and underneath the tree she carved a few complex seals and archaic phrases in old languages with her knife, and then cut her finger to spill a bit of blood on it. The whole carving began to glow and shimmer, and without much ceremony something bended and twisted in an incomprehensible way, leaving a black void into which she, the broom and Julie disappeared.
The cottage welcomed her a second later, and she smiled an exhausted smile. Julie was lying beside her on the wooden floor, and she looked at her before giving out her only order.
"Time must stop, she must sleep" Melusine whispered, and the cottage obeyed. Seeing that it was done the witch made a step towards the bed, and collapsed beside her prisoner.
Her broom rustled in panic and the cottage creaked, and after a bit of deliberation between the two the cottage went on to accommodate its guests and gather all the necessities. It was a very, very old cottage, and its whole purpose was to serve as a refuge or at the very least a kind of resort for the witches and wizards who had its keys. It wasn't the only one of its kind, neither in this world nor in all the others, though the manner in which the dwellings were brought into being was something only the most powerful and experienced were able to accomplish. It was almost a kind of universe it itself, and it had no windows or doors. There was nothing outside of it and no way to enter except in a legitimate fashion. Still, it was connected to the world for obvious purposes, and it began to stock up on food and wood which would be needed for its visitors. The broom helped, giving advice on what its master liked to eat and drink, and the cottage used its own magic to make certain things disappear without a trace from warehouses and markets. Soon there was a nice fire burning in the fireplace and the cottage adjusted its inner light before gently lifting up both girls with its magic. Another exchange of information followed between it and the loyal broom, and the cottage produced another bed for Julie and put her on it, inspecting her person with something similar to curiosity. Its ancient mind had little trouble coming up with various safety measures as to prevent her from doing anything potentially dangerous, and being told that she was something of a prisoner it kept a perpetual eye on her even as it busied itself with other things, namely Melusine herself.
The witch was now its recognized master for the duration of her visit, and the cottage floated her towards the main bed, all the while focusing its healing powers on her battered body. Following the broom's advice the house undressed her before laying her on the bed, and it began to caress her naked body with its soft and silky touch, careful not to go beyond a certain limit after which delight would turn into pleasure. Thus its warm breath merely gave the sleeping girl a feeling of presence between her legs and filled her mind with comforting images, and the images did what they were supposed to do. They brought forth Melusine's pleasant memories and turned them into dreams, and despite everything the witch smiled in her sleep. With almost motherly care the cottage wrapped her up in warm blankets and brought forth its reserve of power, bathing the witch with a sunny radiance that was slowly kindling the fire of her magic, bringing it back to its former glory. A murmuring akin to the purring of a very big cat filled the welcoming space, and the cottage turned its near omniscient eyes first towards one and then the other girl, examining the muscles and bones of their youthful bodies to see if its treatment had the desired effect.
The only possible problem was the imprisoned redhead, who the broom suggested might go by the name of Julie. Despite the fact she was fast asleep and would remain so due to Melusine's decree the cottage could sense and see that her heart was filled to the brim with all sorts of unpleasant emotions and memories. Since it wasn't given an order to dispel them it once more turned to the broom, and the vehicle begrudgingly acknowledged that the whole night was a series of misfortunate events, and that despite its own wishes Melusine wasn't antagonistic towards her. Thus the cottage decided to simply invade her with a very rudimentary image of a sunny valley filled with flowers and bees, and very carefully led her towards it in the ruse of someone whom the girl trusted. A lesser being might've made the mistake of using Alex's appearance, or that of Jack, but the cottage was wise and it sensed that the girl's trouble and joy was linked with these two. Thus Julie's dream-hand was held by none other than Captain America himself, and she allowed herself to be lead away into comfort. As for her body she received the same treatment, and the cottage once more examined the vast addition of odd and unknown science that flowed through it, and meditated upon it to make sure its safety measures were adequate enough to deal with it.
With its work done and the preparations for a delicious meal under way the cottage and the broom began to talk in a way such things talk, and time passed by in the oddest and most unnatural way possible. The cottage couldn't actually stop time, but it could make a second of time of the world it was assigned to last a millennia in its own domain, and thus it did.
Much, much later in a subjective sense Melusine opened her eyes and stretched in her bed, hazy with dreams but eager to put everything into order. With a cup of coffee in her hand and a dozen or so books laid out before her she began to read, to compare and to scribble. The smell of roasting meat made her wolfish, but she disregarded her own need in a diligent effort to find out as much as possible and come up with a viable strategy. The wooden floor of the cottage was soon covered wall to wall with diagrams and calculations, and she frowned at it all under her glasses. The result of her observations and bold assumptions was confirmed by the books and living math that shook and shimmered on the floor below her feet, and with a sigh she turned to Julie. The sigh was followed by a chuckle and then by a laugh.
"Foolish girl, you're in for one wild ride." The witch grinned, approached the redhead and touched her forehead. Julie immediately stirred and began to wake under the happy smile of her unexpected and eager benefactor who was more than ready for a prolonged but delicious struggle which she was sure would ensue.
