Chapter Four
I wake up to my head pounding and my knee screaming in pain. I blink open my eyes and glance around, slowly registering that I’m not at my apartment. I’m in an empty room; there’s a window behind me letting in the soft light of early morning. Looking down at myself, I am confused to find that I’m tied to a chair. Suddenly, all the memories of last night come back and I heave. Nothing comes up, considering I haven’t eaten in a good while. I glance back towards the window; it’s about four feet off the ground and pretty small. It’ll be a tight squeeze but I should be able to get through. Just as I begin to sweep the room for something to untie myself with, the door on the opposite wall bangs open and a man strides in.
He is easily six feet tall and pretty lean. By his broad shoulders though, you can tell he is incredibly strong. He is clad in what look like a custom made suit consisting of a dark purple coat with matching pants. Underneath, there’s a forest green vest, a light blue shirt and a tie. All his clothing looks like it could use a good run through the wash. However, his face is what has me transfixed. Sloppy white make up covers his face, but his eyes are blackened, making them seem even more menacing than they already are. Red paint is smeared on his mouth, exaggerating the gruesome scars blooming at the edge of his lips. They are long and jagged, curving up so it appears he is always smiling. They are simply terrible; I wonder how he got those scars.
He smiles awfully when he sees I’m already awake. “Welcome!” he cackles, sauntering over to me. “Welcome to your new home!” He puts his long arms on the either side of my chair and bends down so we’re face to face.
“I know your knee might be hurting a little bit, but, ah you have no one to blame but yourself, so suck it up,” he grins widely. I do all I can to prevent myself from gagging at his proximity to me.
“So…you are the Joker, aren’t you?” I ask, not making eye contact. “You’re the one who’s been stalking me the last few days.”
“Yeah, yeah, pretty much,” he responds. “I know-”
“My parents can pay you whatever you want,” I break in.
The Joker frowns and tsks. “Don’t…don’t interrupt me. Like I was saying, I know you’re probably confused, but all your questions will probably be answered over the next few weeks.”
“Few weeks!?” I shriek. “What do you mean few weeks? I promise, my parents will give you anything for my release, I’m not lying. We won’t even get the police involved!”
The Joker cackles. “Contrary to your belief Elena, I’m not interested in releasing you and obtaining ransom money. You’re going to stay here with me.”
Tears begin to well up in my eyes. “But, but why?” I blubber. “I don’t want to stay here with you! Why can’t you just let me go now, why wait a few weeks?”
The Joker smiles widely. “I’m not letting you go in a few weeks.”
“But you said-”
“I said all your questions will be answered in the next few weeks, I never said I’d let you go! Silly.”
“I’m never going to see my family again, am I?” I think to myself. I close my eyes as the tears finally spill over. A minute later when I open them, he’s still there, staring at me.
The Joker frowns and then says in a baby voice, mocking concern, “Don’t tell me you’re sad about this! I thought you would enjoy living here with me. You do like it here don’t you?”
I can’t bring myself to speak or move, so I just stare at him. He grabs my head and makes it nod up and down as he says in a high voice, “Oh yes, I am so happy to be here. Thank you, thank you thank you!”
“That’s more like it,” he says in his normal gritty voice. “I guarantee you Elena, you and I will be friends in no time.” He leans in again so his face is barely an inch from mine, too close for my liking. Before I can think through my actions, I bring my face even closer to his and spit. He stands back shocked, as my spittle dribbles down his chin. Then he starts laughing hysterically.
“Oh Elena, I didn’t think you had it in you! What a surprise! That was very rude though. Didn’t your mother ever teach you respect?” I glare at him as he continues laughing, wishing I could do more than just spit on him. He comes up to me suddenly and before I can register it, he’s swung his arm back and smacked me hard against the cheek, sending me sprawling, chair and all to the floor. I wince with pain as my cheekbone collides with the ground. Opening my watering eyes, I see his figure retreating to the door. “Wait,” I yell out, and the figure stops. “Why am I here? What are you going to do to me?” The Joker simply smiles and walks out.
Still on the ground, I’m forced to lie on my face for the next few hours. This gives me a lot of time to mull over my life and how pointless it is at this moment. Mostly, I think about my family and how much I miss them. I honestly shouldn’t have left home to go to Gotham University; I just wasn’t ready for that kind of separation. I swear to myself that if I ever get out of here, I would rethink some aspects of my life. No sense in living if you aren’t truly happy. And with that last thought, I drift into sleep.I find myself jerked awake as my chair is lifted off the ground and up righted. I peek open my eyes and see none other that the Joker standing in front of me, smiling his puckered scar smile “Good afternoon!” he sings gleefully. “It’s good to see you got some rest, you’ll need it for tomorrow.”
He claps his hands together, “Now, the uh, the reason you’re here is to do all the cooking and cleaning. I am simply too busy to deal with trivial stuff like that.”
“You went through all that trouble to abduct me so I could be your maid?” I ask confounded. “Couldn’t you just hire someone?” What a big waste of time, this guy needs a hobby.
“Why spend money when I can kidnap one for free?” he counters. “And yes, for the most part you’ll be my housekeeper…with a few side jobs. But uh, anyways,” he says, grabbing the chair arms, “you need to make sure and have dinner ready by the time I get home every evening. The house needs to stay clean. Lastly, I get bored easily, so you’ll need to entertain me, in one way or another,” he smirks at me.
He reaches up his hand and slowly begins to run his fingers through my hair. I try to move my head away from his grasp.
“Stop, what are you doing?”
He ignores my question, reaches down and strokes my face, before returning his hand to his side. “So are all your duties clear?” he asks me. I don’t ay anything, still in disbelief I’m even here.
“I asked you a question, I expect an answer,” the Joker snaps at me suddenly. I stare blankly at him. I don’t know whether I’m more disturbed by him hitting or caressing my face. This has to be a bad dream.
The Joker’s purses his scared lips. “You know Elena; life is just a game of sorts. There’s a winner and a loser. There are also cheaters. Now I’m not one to follow the so-called ‘rules’ of the game, but I do have fun establishing them. So how about this, every time I ask you a question, you answer.”
I comply and nod to show I understand.
“NO Elena,” the Joker bellows and flicks open a knife, holding it to my throat. “Answer with your voice.”
“Fine,” I say, anger boiling in me. “Fine, I’ll fucking talk. You need to let me go; who are you to just randomly kidnap people? This may have not occurred to you, but I actually have a life, and you’re not wanted in it. Also, you stink! Go take a fucking shower and get the grease out of that stuff you call hair!” I take a few deep breaths to calm myself down, glaring at him all the while.
“Wow!” the Joker shrieks, laughing, “You sure do have spunk. I like that. It’ll make it more fun to break you.” I wince as he begins to roll back his sleeves, reveling toned pale arms. “Now, unfortunately for you, no one gets to talk to me like uh, like that,” he says grinning, “and believe me I am sorry, because you are just so cute when you’re angry.” He reaches over and pinches my cheek. And then he clenches his fist and cocks his shoulder back.
“Please don’t hurt me,” I beg pathetically, closing my eyes. The Joker laughs again and I feel the whoosh of air against my face followed by a rock hard fist smashing against my cheekbone. My head snaps back and I cry out in pain, unable to do anything with my arms at my side. Another fist lands on my opposite cheek, my head reels from the pain, tears start to run down my face. It feels like my face is breaking, and I know for sure it’s bruising.
“Stop it!” it I shout, opening my brown eyes and peering into the Joker’s dark green ones. “Please stop!” The Joker lowers his fist and squats by me so we were face to face. Suddenly, he brings his head to my neck and kisses me softly before drawing back. I shiver unintentionally from the sickening contact, and refuse to make eye contact with the clown.
“Well, I think you learned your lesson,” the Joker says grimly, as he turns around and stalks out of the room.
I slouch in the chair, the chords tightening fiercely against the pressure and fight back not a sob, but a scream of anger.
