A Meeting of Minds
BATMAN’S mind was burning as he drove to the reception at City Hall.
He hadn’t see or heard from the Boy Wonder for two days now – and his partner NEVER went anywhere without checking in at least once every 24 hours.
He couldn’t get the thought out of his head that the recent crimewave and Robin’s seeming disappearance were connected.
He tried one more time to contact the teenager on his BatCommunicator to no avail before angrily jumping out of the car and heading up the stairs of City Hall.
The great and the good of Gotham City were gathered inside to witness the swearing-in of the new Police Commissioner.
Batman nodded to members of the assembled crowd and then started making small talk with a throng of admirers who gathered around him.
He hardly registered what they were saying as his continued to worry over Robin and his whereabouts.
Nor did he notice the elegant, sensuous woman gravitate towards their group from out of the throng – until he saw all the men’s eyes had turned to her with evident admiration.
She gave him a small, confident smile as he finally registered her presence and swept her fingers through her long, blonde hair.
The woman was dressed in a clinging, long silver dress slit at one side to the thigh to reveal a long slender leg and hung low over ample cleavage. It was no wonder all the other men were drinking in her lithe figure with their mouths almost hanging open.
“Hello Batman,” she purred. “I’m Siren.”
Her eyes roved up and down the crimefighter’s muscular body giving him the distinctly uncomfortable feeling she was mentally undressing him.
Siren pursed her lips and said softly: “I’m very pleased to meet you.”
The faint – almost mocking smile – returned to her face. She knew what effect she had on men and Batman was obviously no different despite his fame and legendary powers.
Somehow the Dark Knight had the feeling he’d met her before – but he couldn’t place when or where. It was just a vague, unformed thought in the back of his mind.
“I’m very pleased to meet you too,” he said after a long, almost embarrassing, pause.
“Good,” she smiled. “Tell me, have you bought your little helper with you? It’s Robin isn’t it?”
“Not tonight,” replied Batman, regaining some of his composure. “I’m afraid he’s detained elsewhere.”
Siren’s eyebrows arched in seeming amusement.
“Detained,” she echoed. “What a wonderful word. Not against his will I hope?”
The comment took Batman by surprise but before he could reply Siren added: “But never mind. Maybe another time.
“And I hope you and I can meet again. It’s been a privilege.”
She turned without waiting for an answer. Her hips swayed beneath the clinging dress as she disappeared into the crowd.
Batman stood in silence feeling a sense of unease – something he couldn’t quite put his finger on. He was thinking of seeking out Siren for a longer chat when a security guard appeared by his side and told him he was due on stage for the ceremony.
Twenty minutes later he was at the microphone on stage pledging his whole-hearted support to the incoming new Police Commissioner.
As he spoke he noticed Siren standing in the front row of the crowd. She smiled at him, reached into her handbag and pulled out a pair of bright green gloves.
Slowly and very deliberately she held up her left hand and slid the glove over it – running her tongue over her lips as she did so.
She repeated the action with the right hand and then winked at Batman.
The Dark Knight stuttered halfway through a sentence and had to look down at his script to find his place.
Visions of Robin flashed through his mind as he struggled to resume his speech.
He looked up fumbling for words only to see Siren had disappeared from her place. His eyes scanned the crowd but there was no sight.
Batman’s brain whirred as he haltingly finished the end of his oration – oblivious to the concerned murmurings issuing from the crowd at his unusually inept performance.
