Superman stood outside the closed door for a moment. He wasn’t quite sure what had just come over him. He’d lost control, that’s what had happened. And that’s not something he’d done in a very long time. He still felt a lot of frustration over the events that had transpired the previous night during his confrontation with Rellek. Perhaps he’d inadvertently tried to take some of that frustration out on Rellek’s cohort. No…it hadn’t been inadvertent. He knew what he was doing. And strangely enough, he did feel a little better…just a little, though. He shook his head and walked up the old staircase of the building from the basement and into the hallway that lead to the room on the ground floor where he figured Jane and Chris probably were probably waiting for him. The door was open to the darkened room and as he walked in he saw the two young people standing close together by a window, speaking softly to one another, unaware of his presence. It was still very dark outside but it had stopped raining. He noticed that the moon was full although it was partially obscured by the parting rainclouds and it’s eerie light was washing in through the window where Jane and Chris were standing. So innocent, he thought to himself. If anything were to happen to them during this ordeal he knew that he would never be able to forgive himself. They probably shouldn’t have allowed them to come here in the first place but it was Jane that led him to Trevor after all.
Jane had started investigating the case on her own after a good friend of hers from school had become one of Rellek’s recent victims. She was no ordinary college student, though…she had a sort of “six sense” that alerted her to paranormal activities. She was snooping around the area close to where her friend’s remains had been found when she got a strange feeling as she passed by one of the local liquor stores. She went inside and spotted Trevor buying some food there. She could sense a field of strange negative energy sort of “hanging around” him and it was the same energy pattern that she had sensed around her friend’s corpse when she attended the funeral. Although she was sure that Trevor wasn’t the killer she knew he had some connection so she followed him after he left the store and he wound up leading her into an old industrial section of the city that wasn’t used anymore and to an abandoned factory where he was apparently living as a squatter. She had started to get a really bad feeling as she got closer to the place and she noticed that there were no signs of any kind of life around the area at all…no birds or even insects were to be seen or heard anywhere in the vicinity and the silence was eerie to say the least. So she stayed back and hid behind a pile of old barrels that were stacked up outside the front of the building and she peered out of a thin gap between them to watch Trevor as he approached one of the entrances to the derelict building. That’s when she saw a large figure suddenly appear out of the shadows and approach him from a covered enclave of rusted metal tanks that was situated a few feet to the right of the entrance that Trevor was headed for. She had gotten an overwhelming sense of terror as soon as she saw the strange figure and she had known immediately that it was not human. It was shaped like a human and it was wearing some dark clothing but she knew that it was something else inside. She started feeling short of breath and even though she knew she was scared it was more than that, she felt that something in the air had changed, it had become a lot thicker somehow. She knew the change in the air quality must be caused by the negative energy coming from the entity and she could feel it very strongly from where she was even though the being was at least twenty feet away. She also realized that this creature was the source of the same negative energy that she had sensed around her friend’s corpse and Trevor. She remembered seeing the negative energy field as a kind of “black smoke” hanging around Trevor but it was not actually coming out of him so she knew that he was not the actual source. When she saw the creature with Trevor she knew that it was the source of the energy when she saw the “black smoke” literally pouring out of its body and accumulate all around it. She watched with a terrified awe as it engulfed everything in the vicinity and she knew beyond any doubt that it was the one responsible for her friend’s untimely death. She noticed that Trevor had been startled by the creature’s abrupt appearance but he seemed to calm down after they started talking to each other, although she could not make out what they were saying. The larger being had an incredibly deep, gravely voice that was definitely not human. She described it as sounding like a scratchy recording that had been slowed way down. She also noted that the being was very massive, much larger than any man she had ever seen before, including the professional wrestlers she that had seen when she had accompanied Chris to one of their live performances a few months ago. When she had been closer to Trevor she had judged his height to be slightly less than five and a half feet tall and when she saw the creature standing next to him she saw that it was nearly double his height and very bulky as well. So it was no wonder that the creature had chosen to hide out in an abandoned building outside the city that not even regular homeless people bothered to try using as a shelter. Later she would do some research on the building and learn that it had originally been constructed for assembling motor parts but had later been used as a refinery for certain kinds of toxic waste that came from other plants inside the city before finally being shut down due to safety violations nearly a decade ago. She would wonder if the human whom she would later come to know as Trevor knew anything about the building’s past, including the strong dangers of contamination by harmful chemicals that were undoubtedly still present there. After meeting Trevor in person she would assume that if he did know he probably wouldn’t care. She had not been able to make out the creature’s face because of the shadows, plus it had been late in the afternoon and the sky was overcast that day. She was almost glad for that though because she was afraid to think of what she might have seen. Her heart almost stopped when she felt the thing was looking in her direction. The air seemed to have gotten even thicker at that moment and the light had faded out some as well from the black energy field the creature was generating. She realized that she was literally breathing the darkness that emanated from the evil being. It was making her feel nauseous and she had to fight the urge to gasp for breath. Finally, Trevor went inside the building and the thing followed with him, having to duck down to get in through the same doorway. After they were gone from her sight Jane had quietly crept away and as soon as she felt it was safe enough to do so she ran as fast as she could to the nearest working payphone that was close to an open business and called a cab which she took to her to her boyfriend Chris’s house and soon thereafter she contacted Superman with a telepathic message, a unique ability she had found she was able to perform if she concentrated hard enough, saying that she needed to see him urgently. Superman was able to send the same kind of messages back to her and they had decided to meet in an abandoned office building that was close to Jane’s neighborhood to talk in private. Before their meeting took place, Jane had done the research on the building she’d seen Trevor and the other being go into and had discovered the details of its past. She also had some files on a bunch of older murder cases that had shown too many similarities to her friend’s murder to be just a coincidence and she planned to show them to Superman as well.
Superman remembered the sense of urgency that had been in Jane’s message and had decided to come right away, the very same night. She had proven herself to be of great assistance with cases in the past thanks her special abilities and he knew better than to dismiss her request. He trusted her judgment enough to know that she would have gone to the police for help if that had been a viable option. After she had told him her story of what she had discovered and showed him all of the files she had collected on past murder cases that she felt strongly were connected, he had been glad she chose to contact him directly instead of going to the police. This was too big for them. And although he had not been happy with Jane’s choice to put herself in danger like she did he knew that there really hadn’t been any other option for her if she hoped for her friend’s murder to ever be solved. It’s not like the police would have gone after Trevor just because Jane told them she had gotten a weird feeling about him. She had sensed the strange negative energy coming from the corpse of her friend at the funeral and she had felt the same thing around Trevor before actually seeing the monster that was creating it. Apparently it was something that emanated from the Rellek creature itself and the presence of the field around Trevor indicated that he had regular contact with him. It’s not likely the police would have taken her findings seriously. And even if they had…there’s no telling what would have happened to them. Superman remembered too well the gruesome details of the murder cases that Jane had brought to his attention. It was some of the sickest stuff he’d ever heard of…the awful brutality that Rellek dealt his victims was downright shocking to even the most hardened crime fighter. After his meeting with Jane, Superman had flown right off to the building where Jane had seen Trevor and Rellek together. He had decided not to barge in right away and instead waited on the roof to see if anyone would come out. By then it had been pretty late at night, the sun having gone down for at least a few hours. He also noticed the lack of any insects in the area, no crickets or anything, and his thermal vision detected no mammals in the area either, not even any rats. He did detect one humanoid heat signature inside the building, though, on one of the lower levels, which he assumed was Trevor. If Rellek was in there he could not tell, and if he was then he didn’t have any recognizable heat signature. Superman had waited there for about an hour and was just about to go and do some more invasive snooping when he heard the door to the main entrance open up and peering over the edge of the roof he saw the Rellek creature for the first time himself. Jane had been right, the negative energy around the being was incredibly strong and even though he didn’t actually have any psychic powers of his own, Superman believed that the energy was so strong that even a normal person could probably sense it in some way, especially when the creature itself was close by and within visual range. Superman quietly followed the creature as it entered a dark ally that led to more populated areas and he started to get worried. What if it was hunting for another victim? Superman decided to confront the being before it got the chance to leave the ally. He flew down and landed right in front of the thing, blocking its path, which seemed to startle it a bit as he saw it take a step backwards upon his arrival. It had not been aware of his presence until now. It had growled at him, a very menacing sound he would never forget. It had actually given him a chilling sensation which he was not accustomed to feeling. He knew that this creature was unlike anything he had ever faced before. Much to his surprise, before he had even gotten the chance to say anything, the creature had lunged at him and his throat was completely engulfed in one of its massive hands. Its velocity had caught him off guard, something he had not expected from the bulky creature, and he found its grip to be extremely powerful as well. He felt it trying to crush is esophagus and he felt that it would succeed if given the time. Superman grabbed Rellek’s forearm with both of his hands and planted his feet firmly into the ground and tried to use his strength to pull the creature’s hand away from him but it was no use, he could not make it let go. So the shot up into the air with the creature still hanging on to his neck and then he flew as fast as he could down into ground were they both had been standing a moment ago. He had driven himself deep into the earth and still the creature hung onto his neck and it didn’t seem to be taking any damage. Superman was lying at the bottom of the small chasm he had created with the creature straddling him and still choking him. Then the creature took its other hand and made a fist and began to pummel him in the face. The rock beneath Superman’s head was being shattered by the force of each blow and his nose had actually started to bleed and the creature kept on hitting him over and over at the same time his other hand was crushing his neck in. Superman removed his hands from Rellek’s arm and put them on the creature’s chest and pushed out as hard as he could. All he managed to do was hold Rellek up away from him a bit but the creature’s arms were so much longer than his that it didn’t really matter, it still had a good grip on his neck and was still well within pummeling range with its other fist. Superman was getting weaker and the tension in his arms gave out under Rellek’s weight. At that point Rellek quickly adjusted his grip around Superman’s neck and before he had the chance to do anything about it the creature’s fingers were gouging into his skin. Rellek strained as hard as he could, making another terrible growling sound, and sure enough his fingers were beginning to protrude through the surface of Superman’s neck causing him to bleed profusely. Superman could feel it as Rellek’s fingers pushed themselves deeper into his neck to the point were the creature had his entire esophagus in its grip. Blood was gushing out of Superman’s neck now around the creature’s inserted fingers. Then Rellek repositioned his body and put one of his feet on Superman’s forehead and begin to literally rip Superman’s throat out. Superman tried to scream in pain but all that would come out was a bloody gurgle. His vision was beginning to black out from the intense punishment and he remembered thinking that he had never felt so weak without the presence of Kryptonite ever before in his life, nor had he ever felt such pain. This being, whatever it was, was strong enough to kill him and it seemed like that was exactly what it was going to do. “I could kill you,” he heard the creature say to him in it’s slow, gravely voice and then it just let go of him and stood up, looking down at him. Superman could barely see it standing above him with his vision all hazy as it was but he did see it and he was desperately fighting the urge to pass out. He moved his hands to his mutilated throat and attempted to hold himself together. “Do not cross my path again,” he heard Rellek say and then he saw the creature begin to climb up out of the hole in the ground. It moved very quickly and was gone in just a few seconds despite the fact that the hole was at least a hundred feet into the ground. Superman hadn’t the strength to move himself so he had just stayed were he was and allowed himself to pass out. He had a lot of regenerative healing to do if he was going to survive his injuries. After just a few hours his wounds had begun to heal and when Superman woke back up again several hours later he had been fully healed by his regenerative powers while he had been sleeping. He could hardly believe what had just happened. He wondered why Rellek had bothered to spare his life instead of finishing him when he’d had the chance to do so. In any case, the power that creature possessed was staggering by anyone’s standard and he had no idea what he was going to do about it if it decided to keep up with its killing spree. Then he thought about Trevor. He flew right back to the building and landed on the roof again. He used his thermal/x-ray vision and saw that Trevor was still inside. He had no way of telling if Rellek was there or not, though. So he decided to wait. It was still early in the afternoon, so he figured that Rellek probably was inside and that he would not come out until late at night. Superman stayed on the roof for the rest of the day as he waiting for nightfall. Finally, many hours later, he saw Rellek leave the building and head towards the same ally where they had met the previous night. This time Superman did not go after him. He waited until Rellek was well out of sight and then he flew down to the second floor where Trevor was. He broke through a window to get inside and headed towards the heat signature that Trevor was giving off in another room close by. When he reached the doorway to the room his target resided in he took a step inside and saw the man kneeling on a couch in front of a TV set and he saw that he was looking right at him as well. He’d probably been alerted by the sound of the breaking window. Superman didn’t hesitate another second, he quickly lunged at the smaller man, grabbed him by the arm and hit him upside the head, just hard enough to knock him out. He flew out of the building with the unconscious man in his possession and brought him to the building they were in now, taking him into the basement and chaining him up in the chair that Jane and her boyfriend Chris had prepared for him after Jane had received Superman’s telepathic message instructing them to do so that he had sent her while he was still waiting for Rellek to leave the other building that he had subsequently taken Trevor from.
