Chapter Four: The Rain
The sound of the rain beating against the window sounded to her like the drums of war. Sending cold shivers down her spine, her cloak was pulled tight to her body. She was concentrating hard to keep from ripping the tower apart. How could he be one of them? How could be THAT one?
She thought she had recognized the scars on his chest and back, maybe her mind hid that memory from her to shield her. Now it was out though, and she could feel him. Feel him coming toward her room - did he remember her? Did he know it was her forced hand and her father that killed all that was precious to him? If he did - how would he react? Would he attack her out of anger? Would he rightfully try and kill her - would she even fight back?
“It would be fair..it would be right - if I paid for all the pain my father and I put him through” her voice escaped her lips without realizing it had. inside her mind, her emotions fought over what to do.
“We should just tear him apart and finish the job!” Suggested Rage. The other emotions glaring at her angrily for even the suggestion.
“We should let him kill us...” suggested sadness.
“Maybe he will forgive us?” pleaded Hope.
“Why would he do that! We killed his entire family!” pipped in doubt. Raven shook her head, they were being of no help, always arguing among themselves. Then she heard it. The hollow knocking of a fist upon a steel door.
“Come in” She could tell who it was, not just from the heat that floated its way into her room, but she could feel that aura, the one that now sent shivers of memories down her spine. The light spilled slowly through the room, as his form appeared in her doorway. She realized for a moment that his form was rather intimidating.
“Can I talk to you for a minute?” his voice was soft, recognizing that this was her domain, her space. He would not intrude upon it without her permission. He had heard the stories of those who had angered her, and he didn’t feel like being one of those stories.
“Sure” she barely managed to croak out, fear building in her throat. She watched him step forward into the dim blue light of her room. That did not help him look any less menacing, the shadows hid his eyes, and the softness within them. All she saw was a large demon before her, she shuttered softly to herself, not enough for his eyes to pick up.
He sat down on the edge of her bed, she did not move to stop him. He assumed sense he was still breathing that the movement was okay. His eyes scanned the room for a moment, he recognized many of the things hanging from the walls, things from a realm he never wished to return to.
“Did I do something to upset you? You just stormed out like that...”
She was silent, he thought it was something he did? Should she just keep quiet - I mean after all what harm would there be in him not knowing? The harm would be in that if she didn’t tell him, her emotions would be constantly bothering her, and her powers would go haywire.
“No....” she spoke almost in fear, there was no way to avoid it, he had to be told, she took a deep breath and closed her eyes.
“Dallas....I can feel it..you’re a fire demon aren’t you...”
He blinked, well. She was half right anyway, but how could she tell? Most people chalked it up to mutation, and he never bothered to argue with them, after all most people distrust even half demons.
“Half right...My Father was a Fire Demon - My mother..I don’t know..”
“I...I see...I understand if you don’t wish to talk to me, but I prefer to know as much about my teammates as possible before going into a fight for my life with them...” She prayed he bought the false reason.
“It’s alright, I don’t mind answering a few questions” he cracked a half smile, one of his fangs showing. It was sharp, even if he wasn’t transformed, she figured it could easily rip through a humans flesh if he had chosen that path.
“Do you have any formal fighting training?”
“Kinda - I took martial arts - and where I am from I used to be trained by the warriors in my village..incase...well that is not important.”
“What’s more important - capturing a notorious felon and putting him away for life - or the life of a comrade”
“Life of a comrade - plain and simple”
His answer threw her off a bit, most who grew up in a military setting thought that the mission was always more important then the replaceable soldiers. She quickly regained her composure and brought her cloak down away from her face.
“This is an important question - Where did you get those scars?”
She watched as all the joy, the softness, the kindness faded away from his red eyes. They became a stone cold killers, they almost reminded her of Triguns but Triguns had a maliciousness to them where Dallas’s more were flooded with a search for vengeance.
“I got these from a very powerful Demon who attacked and killed all my people..I don’t know how I survived - the last thing I remember is the three elders fighting him..Triguns...I will never forgive him - and one day I swear I will rip him apart.”
Raven closed her eyes as thunder crashed across the sky, the rain beating harder on the window now then it ever had before to her. Her heart beat with thunderous pain against her chest. He only remembered Triguns - that’s right, he had pulled her there just as the Elders were turning to stone.
“I...there..is something I need to tell you...This may affect your decision as to stay with the team or not...or as to how you view me. Triguns is my father - I was there during that massacre - please before you say anything - I wanted so badly to stop my father, but he had control of my powers. I couldn’t do anything to stop him...”
She heard dripping, not of the water on the window pane, but of blood on her floor. She looked at Dallas and he was clutching his hand so hard the fingernails had dug down deep into the flesh and a steady stream of hot red liquid was now flowing from his hand.
His red gaze, full of fury, full of anger and rage slid to her. A feral growl escaped from his lips, she fully expected him to reach across and pound the life nearly out of her, maybe even kill her - send her back to the hell from which she came.
He stood up and walked a few steps away from the bed, she could see his muscles flexing. She could feel his aura growing stronger and stronger, he was getting ready for an attack. What would it be? Flame? Physical? Would he abuse her just for vengeance?
“So...” he spoke with his teeth grinding hard, she could see his inner lip bleeding from the sharpness of his own teeth. Thunder crashed again, lighting up her room, it was hot in there now, she was sweating. He hadn’t even formed a single drop of sweat yet.
“That bastard ruined your life too...” Her heart thought it would stop. Inside his head, he was in a rage, that monster had destroyed so many life’s. Never had he thought that anyone would go so low as to destroy the life of his very own daughter, Triguns would pay, and pay dearly.
She clutched her chest as she watched him walk away, a tear ran slowly down her cold face. She felt the trail of warmth he left fade away - and then something she couldn’t explain. The absence of that unnatural warmth - left her feeling..empty.
