Awakening
“Kyle. Kyle!”
His eyes shot open upon hearing his name and realizing that he was on the floor, he sat up and looked around. He remembered walking into Raven’s room but after that, everything was hazy. And for some reason his head was hurting. A lot.
“Ky-oh, there you are. Didn’t you hear me calling you?”
“Nope, the first two times weren’t shrill enough.” He said wincing at the pain. “What is it?”
“Well, someone’s in a bad mood. We got what you asked for amongst other things. C’mon out to the common room and we’ll get you a proper breakfast. Maybe it will help lighten your mood.” Raven said.
“Eh, sorry. I just have this killer headache right now and even the slightest sound is deafening. But maybe you’re right. Getting actual food in me might help.” Kyle said as he stood up and walked to the door.
The two walked down the corridor in silence, Kyle fighting back the pain and Raven lost in thought. They had just reached the door when Raven broke the silence.
“I noticed you’re not using your crutches anymore. How come?”
“Well, my leg doesn’t really hurt anymore. It only aches if I’m on it too long.”
“That’s…rather surprising. It usually takes a couple of weeks for someone that was in your predicament to be able to walk on their own again.”
“Well, I’ve always found myself to be a fast healer.” Kyle said and he walked through the doorway.
“Ah, Kyle. Just in time. I was starting to make omelets. What do you want in yours?” Robin asked.
“I thought you guys were going to bring something back, not actually cook something. What made you change your mind?”
“You did; with your keen observation. So, what do you want in it?”
“Hmm. I guess I’ll have some bacon. Oh and maybe some sausage too if possible.”
“Bacon? Sausage? Yech.” Said Beastboy, chiming in. “Why not have some Tofu? It’s good for you and much better than meat.”
“Dude, don’t push your tofu crap onto him.” Cyborg said.
“It’s not crap! It tastes really good!”
“What do you have against meat Beastboy? You of all people I would think would know how good meat can taste.”
“Dude, I’ve been most of those animals. It’s just not right for me to eat them.”
“Yeah, I guess I see your point. But with all due respect I still prefer meat over that bland substitute.”
“Chalk another one up to the meat lovers!”
“Shut up Cyborg!”
After a rather engaging breakfast the group discussed what would be on the day’s schedule. Cyborg would be working on his car, Robin, Starfire and beastboy decided to train for awhile then go out on patrol while Raven would be meditating in her room. Deciding he needed to stretch his legs Kyle asked if someone would be willing to drop him off at the city before they get on with their day.
“You sure you’re up to it Kyle? You’ve been awake for almost a day and you’re still recovering.” Cyborg said with a hint of concern.
“Yeah I need to get out and about. The towers great don’t get me wrong but I need a change of pace from the dull colors of the corridors. Besides, I’m curious to see if my landlord was true to his word and threw all my stuff out.”
“Why would he do that?”
“Well, it’s been hard making ends meet for awhile and being the money grubbing hardass he is its either pay or the street.”
“Dude, that sounds tough.”
“Yeah well, the deadline was five days ago so I’m not hoping for much. Just figure I’d see if their anything of mine left in the trash.”
Escorting Kyle down to the launching bay, Cyborg hopped into the cockpit and Kyle in one of the passenger pods. Opening the bay doors they shot out of it and a brief moment later the ship had docked near one of the piers.
“Take this.” Cyborg said as Kyle climbed out. He handed him a yellow and black colored high tech looking communicator inscribed with the letter T.
“What’s this?”
“It’s a Titan communicator. It connects to a satellite and allows you to talk to anyone that has a communicator no matter where they are on the world.”
“That’s pretty neat.”
“Definitely. Plus it also has a GPS chip in it and a alert button incase a titan needs backup.”
“So, does this mean I’m a teen titan now?”
Cyborg brought his hand up and tapped his chin thoughtfully for a moment. “I dunno. Are you willing to go through the initiation process?” He asked a slightly wicked smile growing on his lips.
“You know what? Forget I asked.”
Cyborg chuckled and hopped back into the ship and sped back to the tower leaving Kyle alone on one of the many docks.
Kyle managed to take the bus to his old neighborhood. He started walking to the apartment complex hampered by a slight limp The walkway was scarcely occupied and the few people that did walk on it kept to themselves and didn’t bother giving him a second glance. Reaching his old apartment building he circled around back to the alleyway and opened the dumpster lid. Empty.
Damn. He thought. I guess I’m too late.
Kyle slammed down the lid it frustration. He knew he didn’t originally own anything of real value but there were a few things that had sentimental importance all of which were gone. Felling down, Kyle headed back to the street, shuffling his feet as he went.
All my stuff is gone. Now I all I really have are the clothes on my back and even they are starting to-
*Tink.*
Kyle’s foot had hit something. It shined briefly as it rolled through sunlight and headed to the side of the alleyway. Wandering over Kyle shifted through some trash bins and after a bit of digging he finally found what he had struck.
“No way.” Kyle whispered unbelieving his fortune. It was his father’s old ring; the only item he had that was connected to his parents. The ring itself was made of a deep sapphire blue and was framed by two thin strips of polished silver. Stepping into the sunlight he inspected it for any chips or dents. Luckily he hadn’t caused it any damage when he kicked it around. Smiling, Kyle put the ring into his pocket and was surprised to feel something already in there. Removing the item it saw it was a credit card loosely wrapped in a note.
Kyle,
Odds are there won’t be anything left of yours; so I gave you this credit card to replace what you lost and maybe get a few more things to decorate your room when it’s ready. Don’t worry, there’s no limit on it. Just don’t go too overboard.
Robin
Dumbfounded, Kyle re read the note again then smiled. Standing at a nearby bus stop he daydreamed of all the stuff he missed out on that he could now afford if only for a little while. Kyle was so lost his fantasies that the bus driver had to clear his throat to get his attention. Embarrassed, Kyle got on the bus and took a seat. Returning to his daydream he didn’t notice a slim figure get up from the back of the bus and walk towards him. Kyle was once again jolted from his thoughts when the petite figure sat down next to him. He didn’t really pay any attention to it until the figure spoke.
“If I didn’t know any better, Id think you were following me.”
Surprised, Kyle looked at the young woman talking to him. She had on a familiar pair of dark rimless sunglasses wore a plain navy blue hat and had on a deep purple T-shirt that hugged her curves and imprinted on it was a striped cat with the words “I am purrrrrfection” written in pink beneath it. She also wore a knee length purple skirt and plain black tennis shoes. It took him a moment but he finally remembered.
“Oh! Bite Me!”
The girl raised a curious eyebrow and smiled mischievously.
“Kinky, but I thought you didn’t get intimate with a girl until after the first date?”
Kyle’s cheeks reddened in embarrassment.
“Ah, sorry. I never really got your name the first time we met.”
The young woman laughed a little.
“Yeah I guess so. You can call me Jinx. And you?”
“Kyle.” He said offering a handshake which she accepted.
“Been keeping out of trouble?”
“Well, let’s just say that I haven’t been caught yet.”
“Uh huh.”
They continued their small talk for a few moments before Jinx realized it was her stop. Standing up she looked like she was considering something. She eventually shrugged her shoulders and took out a pen and paper. She quickly wrote something down and handed it to Kyle.
“This is my stop. Listen, if you aren’t busy and want to get together sometime, here’s my number.” She said lightly blushing as she handed him the small sheet of paper.
“Oh? Aren’t I a little old for you?” Kyle asked bemused.
“I like men who are more mature than the ones around my age.”
Before getting off the bus she blew him a kiss and slyly winked at him before hopping of the bus and skipping down the side walk. Shortly after that Kyle got off near the malls and rubbed his hands together.
Now, let’s go splurge some money!
Hours later Kyle’s legs were tired from walking and carrying armfuls of clothes and various other things. He looked around for someplace to put up his feet for a little while. Not exactly knowing where he was he searched around for a café or fast food joint.
Oh, come on. I’d settle for a bench! He thought finding nothing.
He seemed to be in a older part of Jump city. Not run down but high class. There where various shops that sold designer clothes, exclusive restaurants and other items. One such shop caught his eye. It was an older building than the others. Whereas all the other stores had big flashy signs this one was a small shop with a wooden sign hanging over the doorway saying “Rare Books and Good Reads”. Deciding to investigate Kyle wandered into the store. A small bell ringing as he opened the door the owner came from behind the counter and approached him. He was a short elderly man with a slightly thinned head full of snow white hair and sky blue eyes.
“Good afternoon sir. Welcome to my store. Is there anything I can help you find? Perhaps a first edition of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer?”
“Eh heh, ah, I’m sorry I’m not really here to purchase anything. I just need a place to sit for a little while. My feet are killing me. Is that alright?”
“Of course.” The old man said flashing him a grin. “There’s an isolated recliner near the back of the store. Once you see a recliner amongst empty book shelves you’re there. Oh, and take your time. Its quiet today and I wouldn’t mind the company.”
Nodding a thank you, Kyle wandered into the forest of book shelves filled with books on any and every subject.
Wow. This place is bigger than I thought.
After a few minutes Kyle found the recliner amongst shelves full of very old looking books.
Funny. I thought he said that they would be empty. Guess he thought of some other part of the store.
Setting his bags down he flopped into the chair and heaved a sigh of relief. A few moments of letting his feet recover from his wanderings around the city. Kyle decided to see what types of books where on the shelves and if they seemed interesting maybe glance through them. Scanning the spines he realized that they were all in different languages; none of which he knew. Choosing one at random, he withdrew one that had leather bindings and inscribed on the cover was an ancient drawing of a mountain surrounded by water and on its peak was a tree. Taking to the recliner he sat down and carefully opened the book. In it where strange symbols that filled the pages.
I don’t get it. How is someone supposed to read it? Is there a legend I’m supposed to know?
Without warning Kyles head started to throb in pain. His hands flew to his temples in shock. The pain grew and grew in intensity to the point where he blacked out his body going limp and hands falling upon the open pages of the book whose runes started glowing, then moved.
Kyle awoke with a snort and looked around. He was still in the book store. He looked at his watch and was surprised. It was 5:37 p.m.
I’ve been asleep for four hours?! That must have been one hell of a migraine.
The book slid of his lap and fell on the floor as Kyle wobbly stood up.
Boy, even after dozing for that long I still feel drained.
Still half out of it he stumbled to the front of the book store and saw the owner sitting at the counter watching a small TV. Noticing Kyle he shot him a small smile.
“Sleep well?”
“Wha? How did you-“
“I heard you snoring.” The owner said, giving a slight chuckle when Kyle turned red from embarrassment.
“Eh, sorry about that.”
“Nothing to apologize for. It’s a really comfortable chair. I’ve done the same thing on a few occasions.”
Wandering closer to the counter Kyle glanced at the TV. The old gentleman was watching the local news. At the moment they were speaking with one of their reporters near a destroyed building.
“Its day six since the teen titans and the hive members brought down the first national bank of Jump City. Only a few minor injuries were reported and one person who was in critical condition that was recovered by the titans. There is still no word from them on his current status but we have found out that his name is Kyle Bartholomew Hayes of Indiana.” They then showed his drivers license photo on the screen.
“Well, you seem to be doing fine for someone seriously injured.” Said the old gentlemen cocking an eyebrow.
“Heh, ah, would you believe it was merely a flesh wound?” poorly imitating a British accent.
The store owner was about to reply when the TV caught their attention.
“This is Rachel Webb in the channel 6 news copter with breaking news. We are currently in central Jump city where the Teen Titans are battling a villain known as Control Freak. Civilians in the area are running out of fear from the inanimate objects control freak has brought to life. It is advised to all citizens of Jump city to stay out of central Jump city until the Teen Titans have brought things under control.”
Central Jump City? Isn’t that near here?
Kyle and the shop keeper where startled when they heard an enormous explosion off in the distance.
“Oh my God!” the news women gasped. “A tanker caught in the battle got hit by a stray attack and exploded! Control Freak got hit but the Teen Titans took most of the brunt and are down!”
Kyle was worried. He didn’t know what to do; if there was anything he could do. Just then, a familiar tug on his conscience occurred like every fiber of his being told him what he had to do. Without a second thought he bolted out the door, much to the surprise to the store owner. Running against the mob of people fleeing the battle ground, he finally made it through. The pavement had deep dents in areas of impact and a couple of the buildings were partially destroyed.
A few yards in front of him Kyle could see the Teen Titans on the ground dazed from the blast. Robin was on his hands and knees trying to gather his bearings. Off in the distance Kyle could see the portly figure of Control Freak stumbling to get up.
“Robin! Robin behind you!” He yelled, trying to get his attention, but it was no use.
The blast must have knocked out his hearing.
Kyle looked around, distraught. Control Freak was soon to come to his senses and all of the Teen Titans are down. Which leaves only him to face Control Freak.
Ah, Fuck.
Looking for a weapon Kyle managed to wrestle a long bent pipe from a nearby pile of rubble. Pipe in hand, he charged the villain hoping to get him while his guard is still down. By the time he got close enough to take a swing at him, Control Freak had already recovered and ducked.
“I don’t know who the hell you are,” he said “But you’re not going to stop my victory over the Titans!” He then kicked Kyle in the gut, effectively knocking him over away. Catching his breath he watched as Control Freak leisurely walked to the dazed Titans and raised his remote. Kyle jumped to his feet and ran to the Titans; putting himself between them and the villain.
“You’re in my way, again.” He said frustratingly. “No matter. I take care of you and the Titans in a single blow!” he pointed his remote to a large pile of debris behind him and clicked. And the beam enveloped the rubble it began to move and take shape. It became an enormous creature of rubble, a golem. Smirking, Control freak pointed at him and said:
“Crush this trouble maker and the Titans!”
Roaring in acknowledgment the creature lumbered to Kyle and raised his massive arms, ready to strike. Kyle could hear nothing but the rapid beating of his heart in his ears as time seemed to slow down. His live flashing before his eyes eerily familiar symbols appeared in his mind and even odder, he could understand them. The symbols filled his mind, demanding him to read them. Kyle extended his hands and spoke:
“ársas téagar!” (Ancients shelter)
Immediately upon uttering the words a deep blue transparent dome encompassed Kyle and effectively protected him from the monsters blow. Kyle was dumbfounded at what he just did. He noticed his hands where glowing with an aura the same color as the dome.
I…I know magic?
“Another Teen Titan?! Damn it just when I figure out a way to best you; you go and change things! That is so not fair! Golem! Smash through that shield and destroy them!”
The creature raised its heavy fists and continually brought them down upon the shield. Every blow sent tremors through the shield and through Kyle as well. Each strike brought a shock of pain throughout his body and disrupted his concentration. Soon the shield adorned a large crack on its surface.
I-I don’t know how much longer I can keep this up.
Heaving both its fits into the air the golem forcefully brought them down upon the shield shattering it to pieces that simply disappeared. Kyle reeled from the blow barely able to stay on his feet. He knelt down his entire body drained from the effort. The golem towered before him. It raised its foot intent on crushing him like a human to an ant. Once again, adrenalin coursed through his body thinking that it was the end of him. Before it could bring down its foot three birdarangs sailed over Kyle’s head and stuck into the golem. Three beeps later they all exploded, causing the golem stumbled back in shock.
“Kyle! Are you alright?!” Robin asked landing in front of him.
“Just peachy.”
“Go find some cover. We’ll take care of this.”
Looking back Kyle saw that the rest of the Titans were shaking off their stupors and joining Robin on the front lines. Slightly wobbly Kyle ran to find a safe place to watch the battle. He found an isolated tree out of harm’s way but not enough to lose sight of the fight. Catching his breath He put a hand on the truck to keep him from keeling over. As soon as he touched the tree, more symbols dominated his mind, commanded to be spoken. Too tired to think or resist he breathlessly spoke:
“Tríbhás Brosna!” (Crushing Branches)
His hands glowed again, this time forest green and spread to the tree engulfing it making it weakly glow. The tree quivered as it started to move and suddenly dozens of branches sped out from the tree top, head towards the golem. Everyone was stunned as the branches ensnared the golem; every branch coiling around the creature as soon as it was completely encased, the branches constricted. The loud popping of crushing concrete and groans of bending steel assaulted their ears and then once the outline of the golem was crushed to a deformed figure, the branches retreated back to the tree, letting fall concrete dust and twisted metal. Snapping out of their shock the Titans looked for Control Freak but couldn’t find him. They figured he must have escaped while they watched what happened.
Surprised the Titans approached Kyle who was still under the tree regaining his strength.
“Kyle. How did you do that?” Asked Robin.
“Dude that was awesome!” Bestboy said.
“Friend Kyle are you from Ravens race as well?” Starfire questioned.
“Can’t be. I’ve never seen Raven command living objects before.” Cyborg pondered.
“Kyle, how do you know magic? I sensed no talent when you where at the tower.” Raven quizzed.
“I don’t know how it happened, but it just did. Now if you don’t mind,” Kyle said while looking up at the helicopter circling the battle scene.”Can we continue this discussion back at the tower?”
Sorry for the delay folks. I started college a month ago and its surprising how much they cal lay on you within that amount of time. I’ll still be working on this story but there won’t be any date set for it to come out so you might want to periodically check in from time to time. But still, any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Oh, and a true fan, you got it right the first time around J
