Wait
Pushing the front doors to the tower open, Starfire’s happiness was blown to pieces. Robin was not there and no evidence suggested that he had been recently. What had Fixit seen? Why had he told them that Robin had? Was he really their enemy? Surely not. After Cyborg had helped him, the robot seemed to have changed. Maybe what had happened was that Robin had been caught. Starfire sat on the couch and for the third time that day, broke into tears for her friend.
“Are you going to be ok, Star?” Beast Boy asked sitting down next to her.
“I miss Robin. I had hoped that he would be here. Why was he not here?”
“Maybe he was caught.”
“By whom?”
“Remember that Fixit said that Robin was being chased?”
“I do.”
“Then its possible that Robin could be fighting his way back here.”
“But why would he allow himself to be taken.”
“Maybe he was tired. I mean it’s hard enough to fight Slade. Now add another dozen guys and what do you have?”
“I do not know.”
“A very tired Robin.”
“Then you think that he is ok?”
“I think that Robin is doing his best to get back here.”
“I shall remain awake to welcome Robin back.”
“But we don’t even know if he’s coming back tonight at all.”
“I know. But I believe that he will return soon and I want to be there when he does.”
If there was anything that Beast Boy admired about Starfire, it was her steadfast hope.
“You sure?”
“Indeed.”
“Well if you need to sleep, you can get Cy or me to take over.”
“Thank you,” Starfire said drying her eyes and heading to the kitchen.
Alone, Starfire remembered what had happened that evening. Robin had snapped and she was caught in the middle of it. He had come to her an apologized soon after she locked herself inside her room. Did Robin feel the same way about her that she felt about him? Did he love her and never tell her? The question strained Starfire’s mind, wishing that the answer would come to her. “He is sweet when he does not worry about everything that happens around him,” she thought, “Could I get him to calm down? Oh how I wish he were here. I could tell him everything. He seems to know what to say when I do not understand.” If she had any tears left, they would have spilled but she had exhausted herself. Staring at the door, she slid down the side of one of the cabinets and nodded off to sleep.
In her dream she saw Robin smiling at her. As she reached out to touch his face, she felt her heart leap. Her stomach twisted and she felt herself getting sick.
“I love you,” she whispered in her dream.
“I love you too,” the dream Robin replied.
“Why did you not tell me?”
He didn’t answer.
“Please tell me Robin.”
Again, he did not answer.
“Are you lying to me?”
Before she could get her answer, Slade appeared and placed a hand on Robin’s mouth and a blade at his throat.
“Don’t speak. I own you and you know it Robin.”
“Do not listen to him,” Starfire pleaded.
“It is too late for you girl. He has spent too much of his time trying to track me to get distracted by the likes of you. Right Robin?” Slade forced a nod with the knife.
“You see? He doesn’t really care about you.”
“You lie to me.”
“Do I? Well then here’s something that will bring you to your knees.”
With one quick movement, Slade pulled the blade across Robin’s throat, spilling the life out of him.
“Did I lie?”
“No!” the Tameranian screamed as Robin fell to the ground, blood flowing from the wound.
“Starfire?” he whispered as he felt himself weaken.
“Yes? I am here.”
“I am sorry.”
“For what?”
His body fell limp as Starfire shook his body. “Do not leave me!” she cried, “Please Robin!”
With a start, she opened her eyes. It was morning. Everything was just a dream. The sunlight gleamed in her eyes. She looked over to the door, which was slightly ajar. Could Robin have returned in the middle of the night while she had slept? Was it possible that the one that she loved was home? “Please let it be so,” Starfire thought as she stood up. But it was not to be. It was just Cyborg coming in. He had left the door open slightly when he went down to get the newspaper. Her hopes began to weaken. It had been hours and still no sign of Robin. For the first time that the others had seen, she had no hope for Robin. It was just that what she knew of him that she believed that he would be far ahead of any timetable that anyone could setup when it came to battling. He was fast, his movements swift, and yet he hadn’t arrived. Now one question ran through Starfire’s mind. Why didn’t she try to explore how she felt about Robin before Slade had taken him away?
Heading to her room, she ignored any inquisition to her feelings. She didn’t want to talk about it. All her heart desired was Robin in her arms and to look into his eyes. Grabbing another picture of Robin, she held it close to her heart. “Where are you?” she asked the picture as if it could answer her. “What do I do?” she continued to ask. Not wanting to be alone, she took the picture down with her as she went back to the kitchen to get something for breakfast.
Grabbing a bottle of mustard, she tried to drown out her misery. While everybody was worried about Robin, Starfire’s mood was much more concerning. Robin, they believed, would be fine. He just had to make it home. Starfire, on the other hand, they could do nothing. They heard her talking in her sleep. Well it was more like screaming. She had repeatedly cried out for Robin.
“Starfire,” Raven said as she approached the sorrowful titan.
“Yes friend.”
“You are not well, are you?”
“I am not. I miss Robin.”
“We all do.”
“Even you?”
“Even though I can not express emotion does not mean that I do not have them.”
“How can you be so calm? I am fearing for Robin as we speak.”
“I can tell. And to answer your question, I meditate.”
“Would it help me?”
“Doubt it. Remember when we were switched?”
“Indeed.”
“Remember afterwards, when you joined me in meditation?”
“Yes.”
“It didn’t do anything for you then and that won’t change.”
“Then what shall I do?”
“I tell what I’ll do. I’ll get the others to look for Robin again and you try to calm down.”
“Are you sure that I should not join you?”
Raven nodded and lead Starfire over to the sofa. From there she pulled Beast Boy and Cyborg from their video game. Raven had made a promise and she would keep it. After practically dragging the boys from their spots on the couch, the dark titan nodded to Starfire and left. “I hope they find him,” Starfire thought. Hours seemed to pass as the Tameranian waited, hoping that her friends would bring Robin back. Then she heard a light knocking at the door. “My friends have returned,” Stafire said, “I hope they brought Robin home.”
Opening the door, she did not see Raven, Beast Boy, or Cyborg. Instead, lying at her feet was Robin, bloody and beaten but alive.
“Robin?”
“Star. Help me,” he gasped before fainting.
Grabbing Robin, Starfire rushed him to the medical bay. Setting him on the bed, she sat next to him and called up the others on the communicator with her both wonderful yet horrific news. As the others rushed back, Starfire did her best to nurse Robin’s countless wounds. Looking him over, she noticed that he cradled his arm, “likely broken,” Starfire thought, a number of cuts on his chest, and a countless number of bruises. What had Robin fought and how many? How did he survive the night out on the streets under attack?
The titan leader strained to find a good position. His body cried out in pain. His mind flashed back to his fight for survival. Jinx, Mammoth, Gizmo, and the rest of the HIVE under Brother Blood’s command had fought him repeatedly. It had been a struggle for him and he had finally realized that he needed to get back to the tower. But he was caught when he was just a half-mile away. The night was horrific as he was taken to what had basically been a room to beat him to death. If he hadn’t had his ‘never surrender’ attitude, he would have given up hope in the first hour.
Finally falling asleep, Robin was back in his nightmare of a night. Every strike against his body, every hit and beating, but the most horrific thing that he had to fight of was the water tortures. Enduring the metal strain, he felt his arm being broken. He had yelled in pain. But then he was left to die in his small prison. Mustering all the strength that he had remaining, he was able to break free and slip off before he was caught.
“Robin,” Starfire whispered to the sleeping titan, “I do not know if you are able to hear what I am about to say but I want you to know that I missed you, more than anyone else in the tower, I missed you. And it was after you were taken from me that I knew how much your friendship meant to me. I think of you more then just a friend Robin. I love you.” Leaning over the bed, she kissed the battered titan’s lips.
“Uh, have we come at a bad time?” Beast Boy asked as he and Cyborg stared. Raven didn’t show anything one way or another. Maybe she had already figured it out when Starfire had spoken to her earlier.
“I was just—”
“It’s fine,” Cyborg said.
“Why are you looking at me like that?”
“We weren’t expecting to see Robin half dead,” Beast Boy said.
“He is undead?”
“No, he’s just hurt,” Raven assured.
“Will he be well soon? I really wish to speak with him.”
Raven approached the wounded titan and looked him over. While she could excel the healing, time was still needed to take care of Robin’s broken arm. Passing her hand over the battered body, her eyes glowed as restored Robin’s health. “I have done what I could but Robin will need rest. I suggest that everyone remain as quiet as they can be.” The other titans nodded. If it meant having Robin back on his feet sooner, they would do what ever they could. While the others left, Starfire stood over Robin all day, waiting and hoping that he would open his eyes and speak to her.
Leaving him for a quick lunch that the others insisted she have, Starfire hurried as fast as she could. She wanted to see Robin wake up. She didn’t know if Robin had heard what she had said and she also wished to know what had happened to him. How did he disappear? What had happened to him? And most importantly, did he love her like she loved him? As soon as she finished her small meal, she returned to Robin side, hoping that he was awake.
“Who’s there?” Robin asked in a weak voice as he heard the door open.
“It is I, Starfire. You cannot see me?”
“My eyes are closed. I’m trying to rest.”
“You wish me to leave?”
“No. Stay.”
“Are you sure? Friend Raven said that I should let you sleep.”
“I’ll sleep but I was wondering what happened when I was gone.”
“We were very concern, especially me.”
“You want to know what I was thinking about?”
“Tell me.”
“It wasn’t that Slade had beaten me or that I didn’t figure out his plans. Starfire. It was you. I realized when I thought that I wasn’t going to come back that I really liked you, more then any girl that I ever met. I love you Star. I thought that you should at least know even if you didn’t feel the same for me.”
“You truly love me?”
“Yes.”
“Because when you were gone, you were all that I thought about. I love you too.”
Robin smiled and breathed a sigh of relief as he grimaced in pain.
“And I have something to ask you Robin.”
“What?”
“When you are healed, would you want to uh go out on a date? It is called a date when two people go out together, right?”
“For us it would be,” Robin said as he chuckled.
“What is amusing? Did I do something?”
“No. It’s just that I thought that I would be the one asking you. But I would be more then happy to go on a date with you, it would be my privilege. Would you mind if I set it up though? I think that I might be able to pick out a nice place.”
“When will you be taking me on this date?”
“As soon as my arm is better.”
“How long does it take?”
“Its going to be a month, but I’ll be up and moving before then.”
“I can hardly wait,” Starfire exclaimed as she realized that a dream had come true.
“I’m going to sleep but I’m glad that we told each other how we felt.”
“As am I. Now rest and regain your strength.”
Starfire smiled brightly as she watched Robin sleep. She loved him and he loved her. All that they had to do now was wait for Robin’s full recovery.
