PART 4
The Wayne Manor ballroom. Ollie watched the reception with increasingly bleary eyes. He wasn't drunk. Not yet. Hadn't even built up a decent buzz really. Several laightights and the close scrutiny of some of the guests were taking their toll. The looks of sympathy thrown his way were tolerable. Expected even. The looks of blatant relief directed towards Dinah set his nerves on edge. He wondered for the third time in as many minutes if it was too early to ditch this and join Connor on patrol.
Dick steered Donna to an empty table. Ollie noted the movement, curious. There had been a moment during cereceremony when he had thought--he shook his head. He needed to get a grip on his imagination. Stop trying to read every glance as an invitation. His eyes slid briefly over Dinah and Alfred. The happy couple. Dinah looked his way. He winked. She visibly relaxed and turn her attention back to her husband.
He saw Lian had taken control of the dance floor and was matter of factly teaching Clark and J'onn the Chicken Dance. Roy had ushered a good-looking blonde upstairs moments earlier. Kyle was teaching Mia a salsa move. Ollie wondered if he should intervene but saw that Jade was keeping a close eye on the two. She might be 21 now, but he still thought of Mia as a teenager needing his protection.
Satisfied that his "family" was accounted for, he let his eyes wander back to Dick and Donna. He had his arm comfortably around her shoulders. She had one hand on his knee. The relaxed familiarity of old friends. He thought back to Dick's eyes meeting his during the ceremony. What if there had been something there?
"No fool like an old fool." he muttered to himself. He was tired of chasing after what ifs. He got a fresh beer instead.
"You okay?"
Donna chewed her lip thoughtfully in response to Dick's question. Finally, she settled for a dismissive shrug. "You know how it is--Amazon politics."
"Most ruthless person wins?"
"Something like that."
Dick's fingers traced the faint scar along her throat "You never struck me as particularly ruthless."
Mia plopped down next to them, laughing and out of breath. Donna's eyes warmed to her presence. "Enjoying yourself?"
Mia lightly punched her arm. "You never told me Kyle could dance!"
"Is that what he was doing?" teased Dick.
Mia stuck out her tongue. "Oh, hey, they're finally together."
Ollie handed Roy a beer as Mia waved them over to the table.
"--being a perfect gentleman and showing Sharon where to find her coat." Roy grinned mischievously as he flipped a chair around and sat down. "Upstairs." He sipped his beer. "In the bedroom." He chuckled. "In the back of the closet."
Ollie gave Roy an affectionate slap on the back. He unsnapped his bow tie and shoved into his pocket. Opened his shirt collar. Sighed in exaggerated relief. "That's better."
Dick tried to ignore the striking contrast between the dark suit and Ollie's silver-blonde hair. But that only drew attention to the light foam wetting his mustache. Drew his eyes to the quick, wet tongue flicks that licked the foam away. Ollie unbuttoned his vest. Dick's gaze slid over the shadowy press of nipples against the white dress shirt.
Ollie swept palm across thigh, brushing away crumbs. Dick's fingers tightened, biting into Donna's shoulder. She gave a small gasp of surprise. Threw him a quizzical look. He hurriedly covered his reaction by pulling her tighter to his side in a quick squeeze. Flashed her a disarming smile. Nope, nothing wrong here.
Mia nudged Ollie in the ribs. "Don't be too quick to hang up the tux, old man."
Dick reached for the snack bowl to distract himself. Unfortunately, so did Ollie. Their fingers only a penis--Dick winced--peanut away from touching. Fingers he had no trouble imagining gripped tight around him and pumping.ickeickened breath warm against his neck. Rumbling voice reduced to frantic moans.
Ollie arched an eyebrow. "Oh? Who's the lucky guy?"
Mia pinkened. "Actually--" She took Donna's hand in hers.
Ollie blinked in surprise. He glanced between the two women before his eyes finally fastened on Donna's. "Not funny, Mia."
Mia's enthusiasm deflated. "We're having a commitment ceremony."
"No."
"No?"
Roy laid a placating hand on Ollie's shoulder. "C'mon, Ollie, just--"
"You don't see a problem with this?"
"Well, yeah--"
Ollie nodded, as if Roy had just confirmed the rightness of his opinion. Roy continued, an impish smile playing across his lips. "--I mean, two hot babes getting it on and they don't invite me?" He winked at Mia and Donna. "That's just wrong."
Ollie slammed his beer on the table. "I said NO. And you--" he pointed an accusing finger at Donna "--what the hell are you thinking?"
Donna eyed him coolly. "Is it the age difference, the relationship or just me in particular you have a problem with?"
"You're a metahuman."
"That wasn't a problem when she was dating Roy." Dick pointed out.
"That was before."
"Before what?" asked Mia, frustration edging her voice.
"Before Hal." Roy clarified somberly.
"You gonna tell me the power never got to you?"
"I--" Donna began to protest but was quickly interrupted.
"Not even when your son was in trouble?"
Donna paled. Dick felt the tension in her shoulders. He thrlliellie a dark look. Whatever attraction he was dealing with, he couldn't deny there were aspects of Ollie's personality that he hated. The archer pushed on, growing louder. "You lost it. Like Hal lost it." People nearby started to look over. "Difference is you didn't wipe out a city when you went Looney Tunes." Ollie turned to a visibly shaken Mia. "What? That bit of history get lost between the bed sheets?"
Mia lifted her chin defiantly. "I can handle it."
He slumped into his seat. Face lined with the sadness of one who knows better. "I got a zillion years more experience than you, kid, and I couldn't handle it." He sipped his beer, eyed Donna thoughtfully. "And what about the war?" Donna glanced over at Diana. "Think you're gonna stop that, too?" He rolled the bottle between his palms. Lowered his voice. Almost pleaded with her. "You could stop it, you know."
"I know."
He scowled. "But you won't."
"No." Donna's fingers tightened in Mia's. "Mia understands the sacrifices my position demands."
Ollie refocused on Mia. "She's gonna get you killed."
"I've been shot, barbecued and chased by psychos while you were 'protecting' me, Ollie." Mia anwered sharply. "You really think Donna could do worse?"
Ollie's lips pressed together in a thin, angry line. "As long as you're living under my roof--"
"I moved out a week ago!"
"Well, crap." Ollie stood to leave. "If that isn't the fucking icing--" Roy tried to stop him but Ollie shrugged him off roughly "--on the fucking goddamned cake." and stormed out.
"Someone should go after him." Donna said worriedly.
Mia "hmphed" and crossed her arms petulantly.
Roy looked pleadingly to Dick. "I've gotta get Lian home."
"You are the only one that hasn't ticked him off tonight." coaxed Donna.
Dick wat Oll Ollie's quickly retreating back. "Uhm--yeah--" he relented "--he does seem pretty worked up." He didn't mention how worked up he was getting at the thought of being alone with Ollie.
Roy grinned, relieved. "Thanks, man, I owe you one."
Dick nodded absently, hoping he wasn't about to embarrass himself big time.
