Charlie gasped and grabbed Leonardo’s forearm as a rat scurried across the floor ahead of them in the old church. A moment later Raphael’s sai speared the rodent and pinned its dead body into the wooden floor. She looked over to the red turtle whose arm was still extended from the throw.
Michelangelo let out a low whistle. “That was pretty sweet, bro,” he said. Raphael chuckled and went to retrieve his weapon. Leonardo patted Charlie’s hand and let her hang onto his arm as they looked around. “You okay?” he asked. “Yeah,” she said. “I think my hormones are making me jumpy.” “Well, it is a bit creepy in here,” Leo said, sympathetically. The church was only about ten blocks from the bookstore, but it was a rougher part of town. The empty factory across the street was condemned. There was a graveyard on the right, a pawnshop behind it the church, and an office building on the left with a “massage parlour” in the basement. The church had been decommissioned and had sat empty for years. The organ and statues gone, the hymnbooks were mouldy and damp, and pigeons had flown in through the broken windows and were nesting in the rafters above. There was pigeon shit all over the pews. The congregation had moved on to a bigger, more modern church, and the old building had been left to rot because they couldn’t find a buyer. Donatello pointed up to the big beams and rafters. “We could put a floor up there and make it into two stories,” he said. “We could have bedrooms up there and convert this space into a kitchen and a couple of big sitting rooms or a library… that way we can all hang out - or not - depending on how we’re feeling. We can all have out space if we need it.” Leonardo looked at the pews. “What would we do with all of these - sell them?” Charlie nodded. “They’re worth a few hundred a piece - it would pay for most of the renovations if you guys do the work yourselves.” Raphael looked out the window at the sprawling cemetery. “Well, at least the neighbours are quiet,” he said. “The best part is through here,” Donatello said. He led them through a heavy set of wooden doors to an old hall at the back of the church. Warm light trickled in through the yellow stained glass windows and warmed the antique wood paneling on the walls. There was an old basketball hoop on the wall at the far end and a deflated ball lay in a dusty corner. “This could be our dojo!” “Sold!” Michelangelo shouted. “This is great! We can get some gym mats and put the weight machines in this corner… and there’s room on the wall there for our spare weapons. This is sweet!” “Can we make an access door to the sewer from the basement?” Leonardo asked. “Shouldn’t be a problem,” Don confirmed. “Then I think we should go for it,” the blue turtle said. “What do you think, Raph?” Raphael grinned. “I think I’m gonna do Thai chi in the bell tower!”While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
