Charlie sat in the small vestibule at the back of the old church. Coloured light filtered in from a small window and she could see the dust dancing in the gentle ray of sunshine. She stroked her hands over her round tummy and fingered the organza fabric of her dress. She’d felt a bit silly when April had made her try on an ankle-length, white gown, seeing how she was pregnant and all, but the older woman had insisted it was okay.
“They wouldn’t make maternity wedding gowns if there weren’t a lot of pregnant brides,” April had said as the two women looked through the racks of dresses at the boutique. “Besides, this may be the only wedding the turtles ever have and I want some nice pictures.” Charlie had burst out laughing. “You sound like a mother-in-law.” “I am your mother-in-law,” April smirked. “Now try this one on - it’s gorgeous.” Charlie smiled at the memory and ran her fingertips over a stack of dusty hymnbooks. The dress was lovely, and she was grateful to April for buying for her. The fabric draped over her in elegant, textured folds. It made her feel like a Greek goddess. The little cap sleeves gave it a classy, timeless look. Earlier that morning, she and April had gone to get their hair done. The hairdresser had piled Charlie’s hair in cascading ringlets to go with her dress style. Lisa hadn’t turned up to get her hair done with them, but Charlie could hear her talking to Casey Jones out in the sanctuary and so at least she’d turned up for the wedding. There was a soft knock on the door. “Come in,” she called. Charlie smiled as Yoshi stepped into the room. He had pulled out all the stops and wore a traditional black robe over a white kimono and grey pants. “Wow,” Charlie said. “You look great, Master Splinter.” He chuckled, “Thank you, Charlotte. April would not allow anything less.” Charlie giggled and he sat down beside her. “It’s nice that someone cares, though,” she said. “My parents… well… you know.” “Do you regret not inviting them?” he asked in his gentle voice. She shook her head. “Can you imagine how awful it would have been? I mean, never mind that the guys are mutant turtles… my parents would ruin my wedding even if they were human.” “I am unfortunately inclined to agree,” Splinter said. “But do not dwell on them today, Charlotte. This is meant to be a day of joy.” “You’re right… but I do wish my grandfather was here.” Splinter patted the back of her hand. “I am sure he would be very proud of you, just as I am proud of you.” Splinter smiled and straightened the long sash that wrapped around his waist as Charlie blinked to keep the tears away. They sat quietly for several minutes until she regained her composure. “It’s time, isn’t it?” she asked. “You came to get me.” Splinter smiled. “Yes.” Charlie stood, smoothed down her dress, and picked up her flowers. Splinter rose and she linked her arm with his. The organ music swelled as they stepped into the sanctuary and Charlie blinked in surprise. Where had April found an organist? “She is blind,” Splinter whispered. Charlie shook her head in wonder. A blind priest and a blind organist. Go April. The small group of wedding guests rose as Master Splinter walked her down the aisle. Raphael, Leonardo, and Michelangelo were all wearing black kimonos with colour-coded sashes around their waists. Their masks were off and their weapons were at home - Splinter had forbidden bringing weapons to a place of worship. She smiled at them and they grinned nervously back. This was as close as they’d ever get to truly being human. April, Casey, and Lisa sat in the opposite pew. April had a full mother-of-the-bride gown on, Lisa had a strappy party dress, and Casey looked handsome but claustrophobic and uncomfortable in his suit. He tugged at his tie and April jabbed him in the ribs with her elbow. At the front of the church, Donatello stood to the left of the blind priest. He was dressed like his brothers in a black robe, but had a wide purple sash at his waist. Splinter passed Charlie’s hand to his son and went to sit by April as the young couple stood before the priest. “Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to celebrate the joining in holy matrimony of Charlotte and Donatello,” the priest began. He gave a short sermon on the sanctity of marriage and on the importance of joining families and cultures as well as their souls and bodies. When they exchanged vows, Donatello squeezed Charlotte’s hand and looked into her eyes as he said, “I do.” He slipped a gold ring on her finger and she clipped a gold chain bracelet around his wrist since his fingers were too big for any ring. Her ring had his name engraved on the outside and his bracelet had a small gold tag with her name engraved on it. “Give me your hands,” the priest instructed. He held his hands out, expectantly. For a moment, Donatello looked terrified - this possibility hadn’t occurred to them. Casey jumped up from his seat and tiptoed up beside Donatello and put his hand in the priest’s at the same time Charlie gave him hers. Donatello breathed a sigh of relief as the priest joined Casey’s hand with Charlie’s. “I now declare this lovely couple to be lawfully-wedded husband and wife,” he announced. “You may now kiss the bride.” The clan cheered and clapped as Casey joined Donatello’s hand with Charlie’s and slipped back to his seat. Donatello and Charlie cupped each other’s faces and pressed a gentle kiss to each other’s lips. At last, they were married. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
