“What,” Patricia and Lucy yelled.
“There’s no way he just struck me out,” she saw the shit-eating grin on his face, “It’s not gonna happen again!”
Charlie wound up again, this time she thought she was ready.
“So what’s happened so far,” Marcie walked up.
“Charlie just gave Peppermint Patty a strike,” Violet answered.
“What, I really gotta see this! Trish is one of the best players.”
Another fastball.
“Strike twoo!”
“He did it again,” Lucy yelled.
Charlie shot a grin her way, throwing a curveball. Patricia swung as the ball got close, it hit the tip of the bat, bouncing behind her.
“Ball one,” he tossed the ball back.
“What’s going on here, this is impossible,” Patricia freaked out.
“Maybe you’re not the slacker I thought you were, kid! You think you can strike out Patricia here?”
“We’ll see,” he took position.
“Oh no, you’re not striking me out,” she steadied her bat.
Charlie threw a grounder, Patricia’s swing missed by centimeters.
“Strike threee,” he yelled. “Let’s see if you can hit as good as you throw.”
“Those were eighty mile an hour pitches,” the assistant coach exclaimed.
“I can’t believe he struck her out,” Lucy gasped.
“I can’t either! Charles hasn’t played baseball in years!”
“So, Lucy; can you see he’s not the same guy,” Frieda asked.
“He hasn’t bat yet. He always gets struck out by her,” Lucy said.
“Okay… beginners luck. I can still strike you out,” she handed him the bat.
“You said I was a good player, I’m just playing good.”
He readies the bat, while the coach tosses Patricia the ball.
“Be ready to get struck out, Chuck,” she wound up.
His eyes were steady as a hawk. The bat cracked, Patricia watched the ball soar over her head, straight out center field.
“On the first try,” Lucy cried out.
“He still got it,” Patty said in awe.
“He never had it,” Lucy retorted.
“He has it now.”
The other girls just nod.
Charlie knocked on straight up, that landed a few feet behind her, and another one far left field.
“Kid… I think you just made the team,” Coach pat his back.
“Cool, I did miss baseball- er you’re not mad are you, Trish?”
She stared at him, blinking, “We’re going to take the championship,” she hugged him.
“Hey, Charlie, saw you kick her ass out there,” Franklin walked up.
“It could’ve went either way.”
“I knew you could do it, Charlie,” Linus said.
“Yep. I’m ready to get outta here, though.”
Charlie went to grab his backpack out of his locker, Lucy decided to confront him.
“So you didn’t epically fail out there.”
“Not in the slightest,” he shut his locker.
“I was hoping you’d fail,” she huffed.
“Maybe I fail at failing,” he shrugged.
“But… but that’s who you are!”
“Like a bitch is who you are?”
“I’m not a bitch!”
“You seem like one, to me.”
“Charlie Brown, I am not a bitch,” she yelled, getting their friends attention.
“I mean… you always have been. You were a bitch to me when we were kids…”
“Stop it,” she growled.
“You were a bitch to me in school… at your little booth you ran.”
“Stop calling me that!”
“But it’s who you are,” he smiled.
She’s quickly losing her temper, “they used to call me that at my old school, please stop!”
“See? That proves it; you’re a bitch,” he gave a nonchalant shrug.
“He’s about to get a pounding,” Linus rushed to them.
“That’s it, you fucker,” she swung.
“You left a bitch,” he dodged.
“Stand still,” she threw more punches.
“You came back a bitch,” he danced around her punches, “and still being a bitch.”
They all watched Lucy struggle to land a blow, Charlie bobbed and weaved, laughed.
“You suck,” she stopped to catch her breath.
“Yeah but failing to get beat up by you, is a good failure, I think,” he laughed, “looks like we both failed.”
“Those were awesome moves, Chuck!”
“Thanks, Trish.”
“I thought I was gonna need to step in, for a second.”
“Nah, I had it.”
“You danced circles around her,” Franklin laughed.
Lucy watched them all leave, sans Linus.
“Linus… what happened?”
“Charlie beat you in a fight, without throwing a punch,” he stated.
“But, how? Who is he, I mean look at him with that devil-may-care walk, like he’s so smug.”
“He’s not smug. C’mon, we have things to discuss on the way home.”
Linus drives Lucy home, setting her straight with Charlie.
“So, after you left, he started to change, and a big change was he stopped caring.”
“What do you mean, stopped caring?”
“Exactly that. All his failures and shortcomings; he stopped caring about them, letting them hold him down. He basically just accepted who people thought he was, running with it, letting it all go, and eventually nothing bothered him, his depression went away because he just embraced the put-downs, and let it slide, versus holding on to it all.”
“So he just has a care free attitude?”
“Pretty much. He got in to eastern philosophy for a while, and his mom used to take him to her tai-chi classes. What we see is all the good of Charlie that’s left after the bad was washed away.”
“Wow. I actually kinda expected he’d hate me after what I’d done to him, despise me! But he welcomed me back, and called me pretty.”
“He doesn’t hold grudges, he doesn’t care… he doesn’t really flirt either, not seriously, anyway.”
“You think him calling me pretty was flirting?”
“Or he was being an ass.”
“Everybody is so different, maybe I need to be different.”
“Would be a welcomed change.”
Charlie Brown sits on the hood of his car, in front of the house, smoking a cigarette, Lucy walked outside.
“You have a car?”
“Yep. Trish begged and begged me to let her fix it up… turned out nice,” he offered her cigarette.
“No thanks.”
“Oh yeah, I forgot you don’t smoke.”
“So, you were mean to me earlier.”
“You were mean first.”
“I guess.”
He raised an eyebrow.
“Okay… I was mean first. I’m curious…. are you okay, like after everything?”
“Are you about to give me one of your twisted therapy sessions?”
“I haven’t done that in years.”
“Life sucks, but what can you do? I’m probably the best I’ve ever been, I never wanted much… always thought something was missing.”
“I thought I’d come back, and everything would be the same.”
“You’re the only one who still hates me. After all this time, and I think this is first time we’ve had a civil conversation.”
“I don’t hate you, I can’t hate my favorite whipping boy.”
