They sat facing each other. Her effortlesly graceful, exotic beauty and her sophisticated attire and adornments contrasted with his huge, brutish shape and the cold mechanicality of his accesories.
"Dangerous." His voice was a growl from deep in his barrel-like chest. "Very dangerous. Good as your... ah, sorcerous semblances may be-"
Her anger rose quickly. "You doubt my power?"
He rubbed his hairy, recessed chin. "Doubt is the father of all invention, and the beginning of all wisdom."
"Weak words from weak, long-dead men. Yet here I am, and I will not be insulted."
His massive shoulders rose in a slow, lumbering shrug, unfazed by her anger. "I meant no insult. I trust your power, Lady, or I would not be here. But your... puissance is so unique, and distinctive, that it may become a forewarning. One that some may interpret in time. Like this one," he pointed at a bluish holographic image. "And you know the strong association with Truth held by-"
"Do not speak her name."
"Fine. You know who I meant." He hunched forward, staring at various other images of equal size and hue, floating between them, like a blue intangible spread of tarot cards, holding the future in their reading. "We must have contingency measures. Redundancies. And more than one way to mask our offensives; ways particularly suited to bypass each target's abilities."
She smiled, leaning back, and a carefully manicured finger brushed her lower lip. "Good. You may be useful after all."
"My particular abilities will not be enough. Not with... the one you would not name."
"Oh, I agree. Not with her."
"Or with this other one. Or that one. We need a specialist. A very high-power telepath, like-"
"No." Her lips tightened in disgust. "Not the dwarf."
"He is the most-"
"Not the dwarf."
"Fine. Not him." A name blinked out of a glowing list. "There is one who worked with Light, but he-"
She gestured, and an image took shape between them. "What about him?"
He frowned, wondering if it was a personal jab. "Too wild to control. Too much of a dangerous beast."
She smiled, her purple eyes shining. "I am quite good at mastering that kind."
"Well, along those lines I can also think of someone else."
She sighed. "Another male worm, I suppose?"
"Exactly."
COLD, HARD... CASH
"Please sit down, Ms. Lincoln."
"DOCTOR Louise Lincoln, actually." The chair frosted and creaked ominiously as the pale woman sat. "I fully earned my degree."
"We're sure you did. As we're sure that you'll also earn this... generous fee."
Her cold, disaffected demeanor showed little change at the sight of the deposit certificate, but for the barest glint of pleasure in her icy blue eyes. "The sum is... adequate."
There were many, many zeros following that first digit.
"You read the dossier. You know what must be done."
She nodded. "Are you sure you don't want him-?"
"Completely. While we understand you may wish to... make your, ah, professional name justice, the subject must be alive upon delivery. Alive, Doctor Lincoln. That is not negotiable."
She pursed her thin, blue-tinted lips. "I've have tangled with him before, and his predecesor. As did my own predecesor, too. He's... quite a hothead. Difficult. It may be unavoidable that..."
"We need him ALIVE. It would be a VERY serious inconvenience to us if the subject was fatally harmed. And that would then become a serious inconvenience to you. Do we have an understanding?"
She shrugged, brushing silvery hair off a nearly-white shoulder. "You'll get your money's worth."
The hulking figure stood up from behind his desk, resting massive hands on the polished metal surface to lean forward.
"There is a much more here at stake than just a couple of hits, Doctor Lincoln. There are changes afoot. Important changes."
"What kind of changes?"
"You'll know, in due time." His eyes, deep-set under the thick protruding brow, ran quickly over her scantly-clothed figure. "But a woman of your... many talents will be of great value to us, in the long run."
She stood up as well, her stare colder than ever. Frost began to cover all surfaces. "Not all of my talents are for hire."
He raised his large hands, placatingly. "Of course not. We're offering you a definite contract now, but it could become a full partnership, depending on your discretion, and adaptability."
"I see."
"And you'll find it extremely rewarding to remain on our good side. Extremely rewarding."
She cracked a smile. "I do like... extremes."
