Six months into their relationship they had only French-kissed. They hadn't had many opportunities to do more. One Friday night they were alone in the guest room at a
Chuck’s house. His parents were gone. Chuck took Nancy to his room, leaving Reggie and Betty the guest room. While they were kissing, he slowly slid his hand up to her
breast and cupped it. Betty immediately pushed him away from her. Reggie was hurt and horrified, not knowing what to do, or how to react to her rejection of him. She felt like
a complete fool, knowing she shouldn't have reacted that way. She felt insecure about her body, and she'd panicked. She was scared he'd think she was a baby and a very
ugly one, if he saw her naked. She felt like such a prude.
He'd turned away from her on the couch, hurt from her rejection of him. She touched his shoulder, "Reggie?" He didn't answer.
"I'm sorry," she said. "I didn't mean it, Reggie... I shouldn't have done that. I'm sorry..."
He turned to face her, not looking her in the eyes.
"Why- why'd you do that? Are you still thinking of Archie?" he asked her, the hurt evident in his voice.
"No! It’s not you. It’s me. I'm so sorry..." she repeated. He turned away again, then looked back at her.
"I- I'm sorry...I should not have touched you like that." he mumbled. He couldn't think of anything else to say.
"No, it's my fault. Honest. I- I just, I don't know..."
He didn't say anything, waiting for her to finish.
"I mean, I don't have a very good body you know," she mumbled, her eyes filling with tears. She'd hoped this moment wouldn't come. "I'm really flat. I don't want you to be
disappointed when you see my body."
He was astonished. He'd thought he had been a jerk to feel her up, and she just didn't like him, but to hear this took him aback since he really thought she was gorgeous.
"What are you talking about?" he asked. "Betty, I think you have a beautiful body. Don't worry about it, honest."
"No I don't. I’m flat and ugly" she said, the tears spilling over.
"Yes you do. And I don't want you disagreeing with me either, got it? 'Cause then you're insulting someone I like. And I don't like that."
"Okay, I guess..." she sniffled, not sounding at all convinced. He got some tissue and wiped her tears away. He held her in his arms and comforted her.
"I'm so inexperienced," she blurted out. "I guess you can tell. I guess you're going to have to have some patience, you know? 'Cause I'd rather take things slow. I can
understand if you don't want that, but I'm sorry."
"You've never done it before?" he asked, relieved. He thought for sure she had done ‘it’ with Archie. He knew Veronica had slept with Archie. Archie had bragged about it for
days, to all of the guys.
“Fuckin’ punk. Only punks kiss and tell. Show some respect.” Reggie had said, threatening to hit him if he did not stop his disrespectful bragging.
So now Betty was telling him they never had sex. He stifled a hoot of happiness at that news.
"No," she said. "I'm a virgin. Have you done it before?" she ventured.
He considered lying, but only briefly. "No. Actually, I'm… I'm one too," he stumbled.
"Really?" she asked, sounding amazed.
"Yeah! Why do you sound so surprised? What, did you think I'm some sort of major player or something?" he asked.
"Well, I don't know. I just sort of assumed you’ve done it before. I mean, you're so good-looking...all those girl"
"Really? You think so? I’m been saving myself for that special girl"
"Oh, I didn’t know boys did that too."
"Sure, some of us, anyway. But obviously, looks don't matter much, because you've never done it either, and I think you are totally perfect.”
"Oh, Reggie, you're so sweet...so I’m too beautiful to be a virgin, huh?" she said as him.
“Definitely. When a guy looks at your face, your hair, your, uh, body, he gets turned on.” He leaned in and kissed her. As she kissed him back, she took his hand and placed it
over one of her breasts. He kept his hand there, enjoying the feel of her under his palm. He pulled her to him, his mind racing with emotions for her. Something occurred to
him, and he pulled away from her.
"I just thought of something I’ve been forgetting to do." he said, taking a box out of his jacket pocket.
"What?" she asked.
"I forgot to ask you this." he said. He took her small hand in his large one. He studied her face. "Betty, will you be my girlfriend?" he asked.
Her face lit up. "Oh, yes, Reggie!" she said. "I'd love to be your girlfriend."
Reggie gave her a box with a gold chain and pendant. The pendant had his name on it:
‘Reggie Love Betty’
He grinned as she swept her hair out of the way, so he could place it around her neck. He then showed her the matching one he would wear with ‘Betty Loves Reggie’ on it.
They kissed before he turned and stooped down for her to put his chain on him.
“Now, it’s official.”
“Yes Reggie.” They all went to the movies and bowling to celebrate.
They were now fifteen years old.
The whole school was abuzz with the news that Betty Cooper was going steady with Reggie Mantle. They were inseparable, and this caused a lot of jealousy among their
crowd.
Veronica was especially jealous because of the matching gold pendants they wore.
That cheapskate Archie just gave me a red rose. Damn!
Archie was jealous, which surprised him, He had never been jealous of Betty going out with someone else before.
