Chapter Three: It Starts
“This ain’t gonna work, you know that right?” Raph muttered as they approached the massive hotel the girls were staying at.
The two women had convinced him and his brothers to come back to their place and although Raph and Mikey hadn’t had a problem with that idea at all, Leo had been completely against it. That is until Andrea mentioned another friend-a friend that Leo had somehow managed to forget about. Once he remembered though, he was all too eager to join them, provided of course that they call Splinter as soon as they got to the hotel.
Now they were across the street from the Plaza, standing in the dark shadows of a nearby alley.
“Don’t be so negative,” Andrea scolded lightly. “We’ll get you guys in. Just put the hoods up, do what I say and you’ll be fine.”
Once traffic had cleared and the guys had each pulled up the hoods of their sweatshirts the group made their way across the street and up the stairs of the extravagant hotel. One by one they entered the lobby through the revolving door.
“Come here,” Andrea whispered, grabbing a hold of Raph’s hand and pulling him close to her.
He gave her an odd look but allowed her to put his arm around her waist. “What are ya doin?”
Smiling at him, she placed a hand over his chest. “They won’t bother us if they think we’re on our way to…well, you know.”
Not used to having women act this way around him, mostly because he had never been around that many women in the first place, Raph found himself enjoying the attention. He leaned close to her, tightening his arm around her waist and saying in a low voice only she could hear “So are you tellin’ me that they’ll back off if they think I’m gettin’ lucky tonight?”
She laughed, a soft husky sound that sent a wave of hot pleasure spiraling through him. “You’re a quick one,” she murmured, resting her head against his shoulder.
“It’s what I do.”
Behind them, Catey smiled smugly; glad to see that her friend appeared to be closing the deal quick on her end of their little bargain. They only had a handful of weeks left in this place and it looked as if Andrea wouldn’t be wasting one second of it.
“I’m guessing they’re doing that for a reason,” Mikey said, coming up behind her and wrapping his arms around her waist. “Better join in, huh?”
Mikey hun, you are making this so easy for me, she thought sighing happily and dropping her head back against his shoulder. “Sounds like a plan to me. Better then questioning what’s behind Andrea’s motives. I feel bad for Leo though…all he’s got to keep him company is the pizza’s.”
They both looked over at Leo who had been more or less shafted with the job of carrying their food and looked far from happy about it.
“No worries dudette, he’ll be in heaven once we get upstairs.”
“So you weren’t kidding then?” Catey asked, turning her head slightly to the side and receiving a shadowed view of his unique profile. “You guys really were spying on us?”
Catey laughed as a blush stained his green skin. “It wasn’t spying…not really. We were just…curious.”
“Curious. Sure,” Catey drawled, laying her arms over his. “If you weren’t so darn cute I might actually be mad.”
They made it to the elevator without so much as one curious glance and breathed a collective sigh of relief once the elevators heavy doors slid shut.
On the top floor Kris lounged on the couch in their massive suite, flipping through the channels and finding absolutely nothing. She would have quoted countless movies by saying something along the lines of, “a million channels and nothing to watch” but she wasn’t bored enough to start acting cliché. Maybe a shower would help pass the time as she waited for Andrea and Catey to return. The longer she thought about standing under a hot stream of pressurized water, the more appealing the idea became. Sammy was fast asleep for the night and Kris had her baby monitor so she could hear everything going on in her bedroom. Finally she gave up on her channel surfing with a snort of disgust and went to take a shower.
She was done washing her hair and was in the process of soaking when Andrea and Catey returned. “Kris, hun…we’re back,” Andrea announced, taking her coat off and tossing it onto a large upholstered bench along the wall. “Kris?”
“Maybe she’s taking a nap?” Catey suggested taking the pizza’s from Leo and walking them over to the table.
“Maybe. Leonardo, would you mind seeing if Kris’s in her room?” Andrea asked the eldest turtle. “You can use the phone while you’re in there. It’s on the far bedside table.”
Once he knew Andrea better he would think back to this day and realize he had been set up but now, not having a clue what a matchmaker the blond was, he did just as she asked, knowing that if he didn’t call home soon Splinter and Don would really start to worry.
Going into a tastefully decorated room on the left, Leo found the phone but no trace of the woman named Kris. So, going to the far side table as Andrea had instructed, he sat down on the neatly made bed and picked up the phone to dial home. After the fourth ring someone picked up. “Hello?”
“Hey Don-.”
“Leo! Where are you guys! It’s been over two hours already!”
“We got…side tracked,” Leo muttered, unable to think up something better. Of course…he could always tell the truth. It was, after all, his thing. “Listen Don…some girls got jumped by the Purple Dragon’s and we helped them out. We were going to just take off but one of them was hurt so we went to see if they were okay and…”
“And what Leo?” Don asked, sounding slightly panicked.
“The one that wasn’t out smiled and said hello.”
“…What??”
Leo smiled at the note of shock in his younger brother’s voice. “She said hello Donnie, and so did the other one when she came to. They didn’t even get close to freaking out. It was…really nice for a change. But anyway, we’re at their place now and I’m assuming from the interest their showing that Mike and Raph are going to want to stay for awhile.”
“Wait…you’re at their place?!”
“Yeah Don. They invited us over. They’re very nice…and I trust them. Maybe you could come over and meet them.”
“Alright…who are you and what did you do with my brother?”
“Don, just get over here. We’re at The Plaza, top floor. Come in from the roof and we’ll let you in. Come on Don…we’ve got pizza.”
Standing across the room unnoticed, Kris stared in shock at what she saw sitting on her bed, completely forgetting the fact that the only thing covering her was a thin hotel towel that she had wrapped around herself. Another towel covered her hair, held in place by her hand. She had been using the towel to sponge the wetness out of her hair when she came into the room and saw the mutant turtle sitting there, talking on the phone.
Holy crap, she thought, dropping the hand that held the towel to her chest and clutching it in front of her, they actually found them! Remaining as quiet as possible, Kris listened to the sound of Leonardo’s deep voice as he gave directions to whoever was on the other end. She could lose herself in a voice like that and she more or less did, not even noticing when he hung up the phone and stood, turning around to face her. It was only when she was staring into a pair of the deepest golden brown eyes she had ever seen that she came back to reality, her lips curling up in a warm smile of welcome.
“Hello,” she murmured, trying to bite back her laughter. She’d never seen someone look so nervous before. “Mind if I ask what you’re doing in my room?”
Leo couldn’t manage a reply even if he tried. The words refused to come. All he could do was stand there, stunned speechless by the vision before him. He had forgotten how gorgeous she was. How the hell did that happen? Her hair, delectably wet and tangled, her deeply tanned skin, her liquid brown eyes…everything about her called out to him to stop being so reserved and to start enjoying what life had to offer…what she had to offer.
“Are you okay?” she asked, taking a hesitant step forward and breaking whatever spell had kept him silent.
“Huh? Oh, yeah, I’m fine,” he replied. “I’ve just never seen anyone so beautiful before.” Shit…did he just say that out loud?
Kris laughed softly and crossed the room, patting him on the arm as she passed him on her way to the dresser. “Well thank you. You’re pretty cute yourself.”
Opening the top drawer of her dresser, she pulled out a pair of lacy dark blue underwear and a matching bra, then moved to the second drawer for jeans and a shirt. She could feel his eyes on her the whole time, watching her every move. God, did it feel good. She felt empowered, sensual and even a little sinful standing before him in nothing more than a towel and letting him know exactly what she’d be wearing under her clothing.
“You didn’t answer my other question,” she said, passing him again and going to the bathroom. She had no problem flaunting a little skin but changing in front of him was an entirely different matter. “What are you doing in my room?”
“Oh, um…”He had the grace to look embarrassed and blush a deep shade of red. “I needed to use your phone and your friend Andrea sent me to find you. You are Kris right?”
“That would be me,” she said, closing the door halfway and changing quickly. “So who are you?”
“Leonardo…Leo.”
“Well, it’s nice to meet you Leo.”
“Likewise Kris.”
She finished changing, grabbed the tiny baby monitor Andrea had purchased off the counter, and walked out in a pair of dark blue jeans and a pale peach top that wasn’t tight, but still clung to her curves, emphasizing them. Slipping the monitor into her pocket, she approached him fearlessly, her eyes assessing him as she brushed out her dark hair with her fingers. Stopping right in front of him, she placed her hands on her hips and cocked her head slightly to the side. “I’m not making you nervous, am I?”
Leo straightened, shaking his head. “No.”
“Uh huh,” Kris murmured, very much doubting him. “Then you won’t mind if I do this.” Lifting a hand, she gently touched his face and smiled when his body gave a small jerk. “I do make you nervous.”
“I’m just wondering when you’re going to realize what I am and start screaming,” Leo muttered, part of him wanting to know very much how she felt about the fact that she was touching a mutant.
She surprised him by laughing again and he smiled in response, liking the husky sound. “I don’t do screaming…well, scratch that,” she tapped her chin thoughtfully, looking up at the ceiling as if searching her mind for a time when she might have once screamed. When she looked back at him it was with a devious smile playing at her lips. “I may be a screamer when it comes to certain areas…but that has yet to be determined.”
He caught the subtle innuendo and swallowed hard. The words, a suggestive hint that left nothing to the imagination, did something strange to him…set something free that had been lying dormant deep within him, an animal like hunger he was barely able to control and considering the fact that he had just met Kris…it was almost insane to be thinking about her the way he was at that moment…but it sure as hell didn’t stop him.
“So how did my friends run into you guys,” she asked in a throaty purr, unintentionally leaning closer to him, her hand falling to his shoulder.
“They were attacked in an alley. We saved them,” he murmured back, lost in the deep pools of her eyes. Unfortunately his words had the effect of a bucket of ice-cold water being thrown in a person’s face and Kris immediately straightened up, her eyes going wide.
“What?! They were attacked!?” She tore out of the room, running into the living room where Andrea and Catey stood talking to Leo’s brothers. “Drea! Catey! Are you guys okay!?” she cried, rushing to her friends and looking them over in a frantic, almost motherly way. “Leo said you were attacked.”
Catey watched Kris curiously as she grabbed one of her arms and lifted it, examining it for possible damage. “We’re fine Kris,” she tried to assure her. “Drea’s the one who took most of the damage.”
Uttering a gasp, the raven-haired woman whipped around to face her and a sick feeling crept into her stomach upon seeing the dark welts circling Andrea’s neck. “Oh my love,” she whispered, not caring if any one gave her strange looks. Her and Andrea had a deep friendship and damn anyone who thought differently.
Andrea stared back at her. “I’m okay Kris,” she murmured, opening her arms. “Get over here woman.”
The two embraced, Kris beyond relieved that both of her friends were okay. “This means you never go out without me again, got that?” she muttered, her voice muffled by Andrea’s shoulder.
Andrea laughed softly and rubbed the other woman’s back, attempting to soothe her. “Got it Kris. You’re my body guard, I go nowhere without you.”
“You’re damn right you don’t.”
Pulling away from Kris, Andrea caught sight of the turtle standing behind her and smiled. “I’m guessing you’ve met Leo then?”
“Oh yeah.” Kris looked back at him, at the same time covertly passing the monitor to Andrea. “He’s got great timing.”
Andrea had no clue what she meant but judging from the look on Leo’s face and the way he was blushing she assumed she was better off not knowing, at least not while the guys were around. She could always get the details out of Kris after they left. “Okay then. Well, these are his brothers Michelangelo and Raphael,” she introduced them, gesturing to each when saying his name.
“Nice to meet you and thank you for helping my friends.”
Mikey smiled, waving a three-fingered hand in dismissal. “No problem babe.”
Introductions over, Andrea walked to the table where the pizza’s sat, miraculously untouched. She clipped the monitor to the inside of her jeans pocket, then opened the lid to her own plain cheese pizza and scooped up a piece. The sight of the pizza alone reminded everyone of how hungry they were and they descended upon the pies like ravenous vultures.
Catey and Kris both released enraptured groans upon taking their first bites, causing Andrea to pin them with a smug grin. “And you wanted room service,” she muttered. “So Leo, when does the other one get here?”
By now they were all seated at the large dining room table, Andrea next to Raph, Kris beside Leo and Catey as close to Mikey as she could get. The blue masked turtle swallowed a massive bite of pizza and looked around for a clock. “Not sure. I didn’t get off the phone with him that long ago but he should be here soon.”
“He’d better be,” Mikey said past a mouthful of pizza, already reaching for his second slice, “or else there’s gonna be nothin’ left for him.”
*~*~*~*~*~*
He was late and the pizza was probably gone by now, or at best cold but for the first time in his life he honestly didn’t care. He was far too irritated to actually care about food. Picking his way across the rooftops on his way to The Plaza, Donatello frowned, not exactly happy with his brothers at the moment. His ears were still ringing from Splinter’s winded lecture, one of which his brothers should have been around for but since they were too busy with the girls they had just met he’d borne the brunt of it alone.
Muttering under his breath about careless heroics and irresponsibility, he found The Plaza and dropped onto the wide sweeping arch of a balcony. Top floor, just as Leo had instructed. So why wasn’t anyone around to let him in?
He peeked into the window, mildly surprised that it was so dark inside. Maybe they were all in a different room. He tried knocking softly and when that didn’t bring any familiar faces, he tried the door. Unlocked. Cautiously, he pushed the door open, making note of the lavish furnishings he could make out as he scanned the large room for his brothers. He found nothing though and his irritation quickly escalated. “Leo? Raph…Mikey?” he called out, crossing the room on silent feet. “Hello?”
Oblivious to the voice and the fact that she had a much unexpected visitor, Christy dabbed at her damp face with a plush white towel. It was just what she needed after the day she’d had; a clean face, comfortable clothes and a huge meal conveniently delivered by room service. The best meals ever required no cooking on her part.
Tossing the towel over the ledge of the tub, she checked her reflection, running hands through her short burnished auburn hair and smiling at the gold highlights that winked back at her. Cat like deep gold eyes flecked with green sparkled and her teeth flashed perfect white against smooth ivory skin.
Christy left the bathroom for the comfort of her massive suite complete with a queen sized bed boasting colors of dusty rose and deep royal blue, a cozy sitting area with two wingback chairs and a beautiful stone fireplace.
She passed the formal dress suit she’d worn earlier to a late night meeting and made a face at it. She still had no idea where it had come from, and no idea how she’d ended up in it. The only information she’d been given had come in the form of a note explaining to her the situation and giving her the gist of what she was to do. Considering the strange situation, the fact that she was not only alone but also appeared to be alone in her cartoon form, and her potent fear, she did as it said right down to the T. If her Hawaiian born friend Kris were here, she’d know what to do. The girl was in the right frame of mind to fall comfortably into a cartoon type universe and fit right in. But there was no Kris, so Christy had to wing it and pray that things would go back to normal soon.
Going over to the large dresser that ran the length of the wall across from her bed. She exchanged her oversized terry cloth robe for a pair of faded boot cut jeans and a vintage Lucky Charms t-shirt, seeing as how it was too early for pajamas. But not, she thought with an eager smile, for food. Even in whatever reality she’d landed in or whatever dream this was she couldn’t wake up from, she still knew how to order room service and apparently had the money to do so in style.
Bare feet brought her out of the bedroom and into the dark living room where she flipped on the light switch and stopped dead in her tracks. Any sane person would have screamed, any person worth their weight as a fighter would have dropped into a defensive stance but the strange creature standing in the middle of her living room quickly lifted its hands, assuring her it was not only weaponless but harmless as well. And she knew him. She didn’t know him that well, but she knew him well enough. Suddenly being alone in a cartoon universe wasn’t so daunting.
“Please…don’t scream. I’m just looking for my brothers,” he said in a smooth, calm voice. “Are they here?”
After waiting a few moments for her heart rate to return to normal, Christy walked slowly towards him, her eyes narrowing slightly as she studied his face. Dark purple sweater, blue jeans, a purple mask tied around a face that she’d seen a thousand times in her dreams ever since Andrea, Catey and Kris had started pushing her more towards a preference for purple masked ninja turtles....she murmured a curious statement, playing clueless for the time being to see how things played out. “You’re a…a mutant.”
He shifted uncomfortably, eyes darting around the room as he shoved his hands in the pocket of his sweater. “Yeah. Um…mutant turtle actually and judging from your reaction I’m going to assume that you’ve never met my brothers so I’ll just-.”
“Wait!” She surprised them both by reaching out and grabbing his hand. Heat rose to her cheeks and again her pulse started jump wildly as she stared into his liquid brown eyes. “I…have neighbors. Three girls that showed up about a week ago. Maybe you’re brothers are over there?”
“Maybe.” Donatello put a lot of effort into forming that word and forcing it pasts the lump that had suddenly formed in his throat. He was standing in someone’s living room, holding the hand of the most elegant beauty he’d ever seen before. She was his height, maybe an inch shorter and had a trim body that curved in all the right places. Her gold/green eyes gazed at him fearlessly, a generous mouth smiled at him and he was lost. So lost that he completely forgot why he was there.
“I’m Christy,” she said in a light voice that hinted an accent he couldn’t place.
“I’m Don…Donatello, nice to meet you.”
“Likewise. So, should we go see if I’m correct in my assumption?”
He liked the way she talked; smart, sophisticated with a subtle bit of amusement – a slight southern drawl (now he could place after listening to her talk for a while) that made his insides melt. But it didn’t change the fact that he still had no clue what he was doing there. “You’re assumption?”
She laughed softly. “Yeah. To see if your brothers were at my neighbors place.”
“Oh. Yeah, lead the way.”
“Okay, but first…can I…” she hesitated, lifting her free hand.
She wanted to touch him. Her curiosity mingled with the growing attraction she’d already developed towards the purple masked turtle, an attraction that was growing by leaps and bounds now that he stood before her in person, made the urge to touch him all the more demanding. He nodded once, slowly and she pressed her hand to his cheek, finding the skin warm and smooth to the touch. “Amazing,” she whispered. Realizing that she was being pretty forward for only knowing the guy a little over five minutes as far as he was concerned, Christy dropped her hand. “I’m sorry. I’ve never…” she trailed off.
“That’s okay,” he said with a small smile, “better then screaming. Thanks for not doing that.”
She immediately relaxed. “No problem. Shall we?”
Squeezing the hand that was still clasped in his, Don’s smile brightened. “After you.”
