CHAPTER THREE: SWEET CHARITY THE DYNAMIC DUO went their separate ways through the crowd as they arrived at the reception. The annual Homeless Help Charity Night was one of the highlights of the Gotham City social calendar. Except Batman and Robin both knew the cause had long been hijacked by the city's criminal elements. They had infiltrated the charity from top to bottom and now siphoned off millions from the donations and fundraising efforts as well as using it to launder their ill-gotten gains. Their was a good chance the proceeds from all the recent robberies were already flowing through its coffers. If any proof were needed there was the very fact that despite its 20-year history the charity had not made even the slightest incursion into Gotham's homeless rate. In fact it was increasing as developers including the charity's trustees bought up more and more slum property to convert into shiny apartments and office blocks in the rapidly-gentrifying areas of the city. So it was no surprise the hall was full of any number of sharp-suited criminals flashing their wealth as they chatted idly amongst each other. Batman was still sporting the wounds from his encounter with Electra as he moved through the room. The bruises on his cheeks had turned a brutish combination of purple and yellow standing out vividly beneath his mask. He'd deflected all Robin's questions about where he'd come by the injuries - too embarrassed to tell him they'd been inflicted by a woman who looked more like a glamour model than a street fighter. The Boy Wonder, in turn, had been offended by his partner's reticence but put it to one side as he engaged in small talk with one of the charity's main donors - one of the many who had little idea they were actually being fleeced instead of helping a good cause. As the conversation ended Robin turned to be confronted by a vision moving towards him. He recognised her immediately from the many pictures and TV reports he'd seen of her. Only she looked even more delectable in the flesh. Electra was dressed in tight black leather trousers with a matching loose top fashioned into an inverted V-shape. It was flecked with little strips of red and seemed to be studded with scores of sparkling diamonds. Her hair shone in the overhead lights and he she had an excited smile on her face. "You must be Robin," she cooed. "I'm so pleased to meet you at last. I'm Electra." She held out her hand for Robin to shake and held his for just a fraction longer than normal flashing her big blue eyes at him. "This is a real privilege. I've heard so much about you Robin." The teenage crimefighter blushed slightly. He was used to compliments - but never from someone quite as radiant as the woman standing in front of him. They usually reserved all their attention for Batman. "Well, thank-you," he replied bashfully. "I've heard a lot about you too." "Oh dear," she laughed. "All good I hope." "Oh yes. Yes. Of course," Robin replied hurriedly. Electra beamed. Then she leaned forward and lowered her voice almost conspiratorially. "This must be coincidence Robin. I was only telling your friend Batman the other day how desperate I was too meet you. Did he tell you?" "No. He never mentioned it." "Oh dear. That is a shame. But never mind. You know now. "I would adore it if we could get together some time. Dinner maybe? I'd love you to tell me all about yourself. You must lead such an exciting life." Robin had never felt so flattered in his life. Here was Electra - dubbed the Gotham's Irresistible Man Magnet by at least one down-market newspaper - asking him for dinner! "I'd...I'd love to," he stammered. "How wonderful," she beamed clapping her hands excitedly in front of her. "I'll make the arrangements." Before the still stunned Boy Wonder could reply the pair were interrupted by a gruff voice. "Robin!" barked Batman. Electra cocked her head casually and glanced sideways. "Well hello, Batman," she said coolly. "I didn't know you were here." She turned back to Robin and her smile instantly returned. "So that's a date then," she said. "I'm so looking forward to it." "Looking forward to what?" cut in Batman. Electra turned her head slowly towards the Caped Crusader her smile thinning slightly but an unmistakable twinkle in her eyes. "I was just explaining to Robin how eager I've been to meet him. Remember I asked you to tell him? "You must have forgotten you naughty boy. "Not to worry though as now we have met Robin's agreed to join me for dinner. Isn't that wonderful? "By the way," she added as though casually. "What happened to your face? That looks nasty. It must be causing you a great deal of pain." Batman glared at her angrily which only seemed to make her grin grow wider. "It's fine thanks. And it won't be happening again. You can be sure of that." The Caped Crusader turned to his partner and said: "It's time we were going Robin." The Boy Wonder glanced at Electra with disappointment. She smiled brightly at him. "That's a shame," she said. "We were so enjoying each other's company." She turned to Batman. "Nice meeting you again Batman," she said formally. "Make sure you look after Robin here won't you? He really is so adorable!" Before Batman could reply she turned and began sauntering away - pausing just once to turn her head, put her hand up to her chin and blow Robin a very long, slow kiss. ----------- IT was rare for the Dynamic Duo to argue but by the time they arrived back at the Batcave they had well and truly fallen out. On the journey home Batman had all but forbidden his partner to go anywhere near Electra. "But why?" wailed the Boy Wonder. "She's a very dangerous woman Robin. Stay away from her." "Don't be ridiculous," argued his young protégé. "She's a very nice woman. And she was very interested in hearing about me." "I'm warning you Robin," insisted the Caped Crusader. "You're not to see her. I know things you don't." "Like what?" "Things you don't need to know. Trust me. Just keep well away from Electra for both our sake's." Robin shook his head and slumped down in the seat. He hadn't a clue what had got into Batman. First he came home injured and refused to talk about it and now this. He half-thought Batman might be jealous at Electra's interest in him. After all, it was usually Batman himself who attracted all the women's attention. The pair sat in silence all the way back to the Batcave where as soon as the Batcar had stopped Robin leapt out and stormed off without saying anything more. Batman watched him go and then decided he needed to take some affirmative action. It was time to put a stop to whatever little game Electra was playing.
