“Okay, so what do you say to someone who’s credit card is maxed-out?” Lisa asked. She was sitting with Charlie on the counter that the guys had managed to haul up the elevator shaft to the roof with ropes and pulleys. Donatello had given them all a crash course in mechanical advantage, explaining how gears and pulleys could make a heavy object very light - it was actually pretty interesting. Now the counter sat in the new glassed-in room on the roof, wedged into the corner, so the turtles could lay the fake hardwood flooring down... not that anyone could actually tell the fake stuff from the real deal, once it was down.
Raphael sat back on his heels, looking thoughtful. He was sure he knew this one. “You tell them that you’re very sorry, but that the machine says that the limit has been reached.” He grinned, triumphantly, knowing he was right.
“And then you ask them if they have another method of payment,” Leonardo added, as he clicked another segment into place.
“Cause the name of the game is to make money,” Michelangelo went on, confidently, mimicking Charlie‘s voice as best he could. “We’re not social services. If they don’t have the financial sense to watch their spending, it’s not our problem.” He looked up at Charlie and shrugged. “But I still feel bad for them, babe.”
“Don’t be!” snapped Donatello. “The girls are absolutely right - they’re grownups, not kids. If they overspend, it’s they’re own faults.”
“I dunno,” Mike countered. “Shopping’s an addiction for some people, and addictions take hold of people and enslave their minds. If someone’s not right upstairs, is it really their fault if they do dumb shit? I think it’s the credit card company’s fault for giving them one in the first place.”
Lisa and Charlie looked at each other and sighed as the boys veered away from their job training in favour of a big debate on economic morality. They were getting pretty good at knowing what to do in different work situations, though. Charlie wanted them to be ready for everything because she knew they’d be nervous about walking freely among people for the first time and she didn’t want them to freak out or anything.
Charlie dropped her notebook down next to her and reached down to the lower level of the counter to grab her coffee. “You look better this week,” she said quietly to Lisa while the debate raged on the floor below them. “How are you feeling?”
“Better,” Lisa nodded, picking up a pen and doodling absently on the back cover of the book. “It’s really helping, having Leo sleep on the couch for the last few nights. I’m getting more rest than I have in a long time.” She scooted closer to Charlie and lowered her voice some more. “He’s offered to walk me home, but I told him I was okay to do that, cause it’s still light out. It’s the dark that scares me, you know?”
“Yeah,” Charlie nodded. “I sleep much more soundly with Donnie around. I mean, I thought I slept okay before I met him, but there was always something to worry about... my dad, for instance... and I’d wake up a few times in the night. But when he stays over, which is like, all the time now, I go to sleep and I don’t wake up once until the alarm goes off.”
Charlie sighed and looked dreamily at the purple turtle. His muscles flexed under his dark, green skin as he moved around, installing the flooring. He’d propped his bo up on the far side of the counter where his brothers had laid their weapons, but they all still wore their masks and pads. The ends of Don’s mask fell over his shoulder like silky water as he worked, but he didn’t seem to notice.
He was unofficially living with her at her place. Don still went home with his brothers to work out every night, though. If anyone tried to get out of going to practice, Charlie would gang up with Leo and insist upon it. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, Don took her to the lair with him to work out with Raphael. The two of them were really into Tai Chi, but Don was glad that his brother was also teaching her a few self-defense moves to build her confidence and to give her a better chance of escaping if she was ever attacked again. At the end of every day though, Donatello and Charlie always would up back at her place, eating together, then they’d get talking and wind up snuggling on her couch to watch the news, which often led to a lot of kissing and giggling. Charlie loved it when he laughed - it made her feel stronger inside when he did.
After the news, he’d find a movie or something on the Discovery channel, and she’d go off and brush her teeth and put on some pajamas before coming back to cuddle with him. Then around ten, he’d scoop her up in his arms and carry her off to bed. They didn’t make love every night, but she loved the thrill of being scooped up off the ground, and he was more than happy to oblige.
Don looked up from where he was working and winked at Charlie before jumping back into the conversation to argue with Raphael about something.
Charlie blushed at the wink, knowing what he was thinking. They’d stayed behind after everyone else had gone home last night and had would up having sex on the new counter. She loved how he could turn her on so innocently - Donatello had come up behind her while she was unplugging her coffee machine, just talking casually about how well the remodeling was coming along and then he’d started massaging her shoulders with that weird ninja thing he could do. His hands had slipped down her back, then around to her stomach, rubbing and stroking, relaxing her until she’d sagged back against his plastron, in bliss.
The churl started up in Don’t throat as he had lowered his head and kissed along her neck, pausing to run his soft tongue in soft circles over the sensitive spot at the top of her shoulder as his hands slipped up to massage her breasts. She loved it when he did that and she liked that he wasn’t shy anymore about the turtle noises he made when he was aroused. He’d tweaked her nipples gently through her bra and shirt, then lowered a hand down to undo her belt and jeans while he’d nipped at her ear lobe.
“Charlotte?”
“Huh?” Charlie said, snapping out of her reverie.
“I asked you if you thought I was taking advantage of him,” Lisa said, nodding slightly in Leo’s direction.
“What?” Charlie said, focusing her brain back to the present. “Of course not. Leo’s a great guy... they all are.” Charlie sighed and looked out at the view of the city through the glass wall next to them. “Honey, we’re used to dating losers who use us and take advantage of us.”
Lisa snorted in agreement.
“We’re not used to being around guys who will do something just to be nice,” Charlie continued. “When Don first started coming to visit me, he’d change light bulbs or help with the dishes. I’d never had a guy around before who would do that without expecting me to put out in return. Master Splinter taught these guys right. When they do something kind, there’s no price tag attached to the act - it stands alone as a good deed or an act of friendship, if that makes sense.”
“Yeah,” Lisa nodded, “it does. I think it’s part of that whole honor thing. Still, I feel kind of bad that he has to sleep on a couch instead of his own bed because of me.”
“If he really minded doing it,” Charlie countered, “he’d get Raphael and Michelangelo to rotate nights with him. If Leo’s with you, it’s because he wants to be.”
“Which one of us are you two talking about?” Mike grinned from across the room.
“We’re not talking about any of you!” Lisa grinned, exchanging looks with Charlie. Charlie smiled, too, glad her friend was more like her old self. Leonardo had told her about how the lights had been off and about how she’d been scrubbing herself raw, even though he’d told Lisa that he wouldn’t tell anyone. Charlie had proven her strength of character to the turtles several times now and he knew he could trust her as much as he could trust his brothers. Leo thought that Charlie needed to know in case he needed to call in reinforcements if Lisa got worse.
“Yeah!” Charlie said, ganging up with Lisa like schoolgirls did. “We’re totally not talking about you.”
“Well then, what’s with the hushed voices, dudette?” Mike asked. He’d finished his part of the floor and hopped easily to his feet to stretch.
“If you must know,” Charlie said, pretending to be annoyed, “we were talking about lady things.”
The girls burst our laughing as Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Raphael all winced at once. Donatello looked at them and shook his head - he’d have to have a talk with them. It used to weird him out, too, but he’d seen it happen to Charlie often enough now that he understood it enough to know that even though it was a bit gross, there was a lot more to it than just bitchiness and bleeding.
Lisa chuckled and picked up Charlie’s book, flipping through the long list of situations that they’d prepared. “Okay,” she said, as Michelangelo came to lean against the counter next to them. “What do you do if someone wants a book that we don’t have?”
Leonardo finished his part of the floor and stood up. “We offer to order it in for them at a ten percent discount to keep them from shopping somewhere else,” he grinned.
“You know what?” Lisa said to Charlie, “I think they’re gonna be just fine.”
Michelangelo turned up his radio a bit and lifted Charlie down off the counter by her waist. “Come boogie with me, babe,” he grinned, pulling her into the middle of the floor. Charlie laughed and put her hand in Mike’s, while he twirled her around the room to “Ballroom Blitz.”
Don finished the last of his flooring and went to help Raphael click the last few pieces into place. He felt a little guilty for leaving Raph and Mikey alone in the lair so much, especially this past week, since Leo had been sleeping on Lisa’s couch. He and Charlie talked about it a lot, late at night in bed before they went to sleep. Maybe if this went well, they could leave the lair for good. It was weird to think about - it had been their home for so long, but it would be something else to have windows...
Leonardo leaned against the edge of the counter next to Lisa, wishing for the millionth time that he could be more like Mike and just grab a girl to dance with. He felt more confident at night when he was Lisa’s protector than during the day when he was just her friend. She didn’t need him when the sun was out. Leo kicked himself mentally. Fuck, he couldn’t even talk to her and she was right next to him... he didn’t know what to say.
“Whatcha thinking about?” Lisa said, smiling. She liked his quiet presence, but she was never really sure what to say to him at work. At night, she’d talk to him about Bubba and monsters, and her nightmares about rape, but she felt shy around him during the day. He was so big and sure of himself. She felt like a teenager next to him; self-conscious and shy.
“Just admiring the flooring,” Leo lied. He’d been thinking about how pretty her hair was and reminding himself that he could never ever touch her in case it sent her into a relapse.
“It looks great!” she said, enthusiastically. “This place is going to be the largest independent bookstore in New York. Isn’t that wonderful?”
“Yeah,” he said. “I’m glad Charlie decided to rebuild it. She deserves to be happy after everything she’s been through.” The song on the radio changed and Leo smiled as he recognized it. “Do you like the Stones?” he asked, nodding to the radio as “Beast of Burden” played.
“This is one of my favourite songs,” Lisa admitted as Michelangelo and Charlie settled into a friendly shuffle. “Where’d he learn how to dance like that?” she asked.
Leo shrugged, “April used to dance with us when we were teenagers. She used to buy us cd’s and we’d listen to them together in the lair. She’s taught us a lot of stuff, actually.” He blinked in surprise as Lisa jumped down from the counter and grabbed his hand.
“Show me what you’ve got,” she grinned, pulling him toward the other dancing pair.
It took all of Leo’s ninja training to keep his composure. Charlie had told him once that Lisa used to be a lot of fun and that she loved to go dancing in clubs. Maybe now that she’d been getting some sleep, she was feeling perky enough to dance again.
Leonardo’s hand was warm and leathery in Lisa’s smaller one. By the time she’d dragged him halfway across the new floor, his brain kicked in and he pulled her gently back to him, letting her place a hand on his shoulder before he gently set one on her waist, being careful to look her in the eyes the whole time to keep from startling her.
“Aren’t they great dancers?” Charlie called to Lisa as Leonardo moved her around to the music. “I think it’s the ninja stuff.”
“Yeah,” Lisa agreed, “You’re very light on your feet, Leo.”
“And we’re totally hot, too,” Mike laughed, lifting his hand from Charlie’s waist to flex his muscles. “Look at that,” he bragged, nodding to his bicep. “100% beef.”
“Oh, get over yerself,” Raphael groaned, as he and Donatello finished the last of the flooring. He sat back on his heels. “Mine are way bigger than yers.” He flexed an arm to prove it.
“Like hell, man,” Mike snorted.
“You all have big muscles, guys,” Charlie sighed. “Don’t squabble.”
“We ain’t squabblin‘,” Raph said, hopping to his feet next to Don. “We’re just establishin’ dat I’m stronger than the rest ’a these sissies. I spend more time in the gym than they do.”
“Cause you have no life, bro,” Mike snorted.
“And you both need to spend more time keeping your egos in check,” Leo said calmly in Japanese. “You’re supposed to be modest about your skills.”
Donatello winced. Leonardo was absolutely right, but this was usually where he and Raphael would get into an epic battle. Raphael’s eyes flashed for a moment, but to Don’s shock, he suddenly sighed. “Yeah, you’re right, Leo.”
Leonardo thought about dancing with Charlie for the rest of the day. Her little hip had been so curvy and sweet under his rough hand. He’d wanted to rub his pals over her whole body to feel the softness and shape, but he knew that was completely out of the question.
Master Splinter had snapped at him during practice because he wasn’t paying attention to the new moves that their sensei was able to teach them now that he was healthy again. Raphael hadn’t actually said anything about it, but Leo had seen the laughter in his eyes when he’d gotten growled out. Leo didn’t care though - he and Raph would just have to kick the living shit out of each other the next time they went to the farm.
Leo hopped onto the subway to get across town to Lisa’s and once he’d nestled himself between the cars where he wouldn’t be seen, he shut his eyes and tried to remember how good she’d smelled. Her whole house smelled like her, of course, but it was different in person. The only other time he’d ever been that close to her was the night he’d saved her from Bubba. If he hadn’t been so worried about his father and Charlie and his brothers, he would have really enjoyed having her hand in his and feeling her leg pressed against his thigh as Mike had driven them to the museum like he was in the Indy 500.
He sighed and watched the lights flash by as the wind whipped his mask ends out of his trench coat and snapped them wildly in the wind. He knew that he shouldn’t let himself get bummed out about girl stuff, but it was hard not to - they were all so lonely.
Man, it had felt good to dance with a girl.
Lisa twiddled her fingers nervously as she waited for Leo to arrive. She’d left the lights on, even though it made her feel a little vulnerable. She’d also rented a movie and had some popcorn ready to stick in the microwave. She wasn’t sure what he’d like to watch, but she’d crossed her fingers and brought home “Death Race.” She hadn’t seen it before and hoped he hadn’t either.
She kept thinking about what Charlie had said... “if Leo’s with you, it’s because he wants to be.” Leo wanted to be with her? Why?
Lisa jumped out of her chair when she heard the gentle knock on her door.
