Park Rendezvous
Robin sat on the couch, watching the clock. Soon, he would have to leave. As the time drew closer, he became more and more nervous. “It’s a trap,” Robin kept remembering Cyborg say. “I have to know,” Robin thought, “This could end a lot of problems with the HIVE.” The clock struck eight; time to leave. Robin made his way to the garage to get his bike. If he was ambushed and needed an escape, this was the way to get out of trouble. He loaded some extra bird-a-rangs and several electric discs. “There is going to be no way that I’m going to be unprepared,” Robin said to himself as he closed the compartment on his bike. Getting on, he set the alarm to the tower and sped off to meet his enemy.
The drive over gave Robin time to think of any possibility that Jinx insisted on meeting him, and from all indications, alone. “What is she up to,” Robin thought, “reason keeps telling me no, but my gut tells me yes.” The cold air surrounding him was the only thing that kept his mind in reality. “And why did she not kill me? She had the opportunity that hundreds never had. Why pass it up?”
At the park, Jinx made sure that nobody was following her. Were she to be caught by anyone, especially HIVE members, her plan could be ruined. Nothing would be able to salvage it, no matter what she could possibly say. “I just hope that the other’s will stay away.” She made her way to the third lamppost in the park and sat on a nearby bench, waiting.
Looking at her watch, it was 8:30 and Robin hadn’t shown up and she didn’t see any indication that he was nearby. Was she on the wrong side of the park? No, she came from the east and could count to three. “Where is Robin,” she said to herself. “Right here,” she heard above her. Crouching on a branch in the tree, he had watched to make sure that she was not meeting anyone else to set a trap for him. “Why are you up there,” she ask Robin. Jumping from his perch, he landed beside her, “I needed to make sure that you weren’t up something.” Jinx look at him longingly, “Do you trust me now,” she asked.
Robin somewhat grinned, “More,” he stated. That was probably the best the Jinx could get from him. “Well,” she said, “sit down and I’ll tell you the HIVE’s up to,” and pointed to a bench that was under a nearby tree, perfect for a secret conversation like the one that she wanted. She walked into the dark and Robin follow carefully. There was still the possibility that she was leading into a trap. Grabbing his staff under his cape, he was ready for anyone. “Sit,” the pink enchantress said as she took a set on the bench. Robin approach carefully, still expecting something was going on. Sitting opposite of Jinx, he looked in her direction and waited for Jinx to spill the information. “You going to tell me what you guys are up to,” he asked after several minutes of silence.
“We’re looking to make an aging device to destroy you and your team,” Jinx said, “and each member has a project. Mine was to find some computer pieces, so I brought Gizmo. Mammoth was for the muscle to stand guard.” Robin was puzzled twofold. One, why was she telling him this? Now he and the others could prepare for some type of defense. And two, why would she be around a harbor looking for technology? “But why were you in that warehouse,” Robin asked. “There was supposed to be a shipment from some new company that makes some of the best in the world, at least according to Gizmo,” Jinx explained. Then Robin asked the question that bothered him all day. “Why are you doing this,” he asked. “You want to get something to drink? I’m cold,” Jinx dodge the question.
“Will you tell me why you’re doing this,” Robin asked. “After I get warmed up,” Jinx responded getting up, “you want to come with me?” The titan leader thought about the idea. It was cold and something to drink would be nice. “Sure,” he agreed, “where?” “There’s a nice little coffee shop on the other side of the park,” the pink sorceress said. Walking along side with Robin, Jinx was carefully watching her back.
About a block away from the shop, who should show up but Jinx’s friends? “Where have you been,” Gizmo yelled. “With him,” Jinx said turning to Robin, but he had disappeared. “Who,” Mammoth said, “I don’t see anyone.” Jinx was stunned, “Where did he go?” In Jinx’s mind she was glad Robin decided to hide rather than fight. Had he been around, Jinx would have wasted her time and her risk would have been for nothing. “There was nobody,” Gizmo said. Jinx was perplexed. She had seen and conversed with Robin, didn’t she. “Anyhow, where is the sleeping stuff,” Mammoth said holding his head. “Is that what you’re here for,” Jinx asked. “Well that and we saw that witch,” Gizmo said. “What did she do,” Jinx asked. Gizmo and Mammoth looked at each other. “Nothing,” Gizmo and Mammoth answered. “The stuff is in the that cabinet in the back room.”
Robin watched everything from the tree. He watched Jinx closely, listening to the conversation and wondering if it was a trap and should attack. But before he did, Gizmo and Mammoth walked away. When he was sure that they were gone, he jumped down from the tree and landed behind Jinx. “So what was that,” Robin said surprising Jinx. “Where did you go and why didn’t you fight them,” she asked. “To make sure that you weren’t trying to screw me over and for your information, I was around,” Robin said. “So, do you still want to get something to drink,” Jinx asked. “Sure.” This time Robin kept a distance from Jinx and watched to make sure that her allies weren’t coming back.
The shop that they went to was rather quiet. “let's just get the coffee and go,” Jinx said. Robin ordered his and left, Jinx behind him with hers. Drinking the hot beverage in the cool night was relaxing. “You want something to eat,” Jinx asked. “I’m not going to buy anymore, and I had dinner before I left. Why?” Jinx rummaged through a bag that she had been carrying. “What’s in there,” Robin asked. “A couple sandwiches. Want one?” Robin took one and looked at it suspiciously. “How about you take a bite first,” he said holding to her mouth. Jinx expected the skepticism. “If I wanted to kill you, wouldn’t I have done it earlier?” Robin didn’t waver, “Eat it,” he order. Jinx took a bite, chewed, and swallowed. “Happy now,” she said reaching for the other one. Robin slowly ate what Jinx offered and had to admit, it was pretty go.
“Now about not killing me,” Robin said, “Why? You had the chance of your criminal career.” Jinx looked at Robin, considering how she was going to proceed with her plot. “Remember I said that girls everywhere find you attractive?” Robin thought back to when Jinx had come to apologize and nodded, “Yeah so...you like me?” Jinx grinned shyly, “Yeah, you’re such a good looker and a great leader too. I’ve never met the two characteristics meet like they do in you.” Robin was stunned. This was his enemy for crying out loud and now she liked him. What the hell was going on? “Robin,” Jinx said, “you ok? Here, have my sandwich too.” Robin held up a hand, “I just don’t get it. Why would you like me? There has to be someone in the HIVE that you like.” The pink sorceress shook her head, “Who? All the guys in there are not nearly as cute as you.” “Oh, so now I’m cute,” Robin said. Jinx smiled.
“Well that’s nice but...” “But what,” Jinx interjected, “I’m evil? I’m your enemy? What?” Robin didn’t want to turn this into a bad situation but what was he going to say. “Look, I think that what you did tonight was great. It’s just that...I’m having a hard time taking this in. It’s just so weird that...what?” Jinx looked at him, her eyes seeming to project a message to him. “Will you come with me? I want to show you one more thing, if you trust me.” The boy wonder agreed, “Maybe the HIVE’s new hideout,” he thought. “Oh, can we take your bike; it’s going to be a long walk otherwise and I don’t think that it would be great for us to walk together.” “And you on my bike isn’t going to get people to stare.” Again the pink enchantress grabbed something from her bag and pulled out a helmet. “Why did you have that?” Robin wanted to know. “I figured you’d take you motorcycle so I brought this too.” “Anything else in there,” Robin asked. “No, now let's go.”
The two teens made their way to Robin’s motorcycle. Revving up the bike, Robin sped off, directed by Jinx. Down back alleys and through shadows, Robin watched everything: Jinx, the streets, and for any other HIVE members that could be lurking. “Stop here,” Jinx said pointing to a rundown apartment. “This is where I used to live before I joined the HIVE” Robin stared at the building, “Are you sure that its safe,” Robin said, “Looks like its going to collapse.” “What I want to give you is in there,” Jinx said. Getting off the bike, Jinx led Robin towards her former home.
