In her room, Starfire held a picture of Robin and herself from the night that Blackfire had shown up. That night, although it carried its horror, reminded the Tameranian of what Robin had done that night. He had shown her a good time. It was one of few times that Robin had been able to relax. She loved that Robin. The one that made her happy, the one that had taken time to explain Earth’s customs to her. She missed him. What had become of him? As far as she knew, there was no weapon on the planet that was capable of vaporizing a person. But what did she know? She didn’t know everything about Earth and she certainly didn’t know much about Slade, at least not in comparison to Robin.
“Oh Robin,” she cried into her bed, “why could I not save you? You saved me so many times and I could not do the same for you.” Then she heard a knock on her door.
“Who is there?” she asked, sniffling.
“Star. Its me, BB.”
“Why are you here?” the Tameranian asked opening the door.
“Because I know what it feels like to lose someone you care about. I lost Terra. She was my friend.”
“You are a good friend.”
“And I have something that you might want to hear.”
“What?” Starfire asked.
“Cy doesn’t think that Robin’s dead.”
“But I saw Slade make him disappear.”
“I don’t get it either Star. But Cy said something about wormholes and other sci-fi which-a-gahooz-its”
“Please continue.”
“You kinda need to ask Cy about it. I just thought that you might want to know.”
Starfire got up and headed down stairs. Stopping at her door, she turned and nearly crushed Beast Boy in a vice like hug.
“Thanks Star,” Beast Boy gasped as he felt air being squeezed from his lungs.
“I shall talk to Cyborg now,” Starfire announced as she let Beast Boy go.
Downstairs, Starfire found Cyborg walking in from his room with a small slide of glass. On it was a black spot.
“Cyborg?”
“Yeah Star?”
“What is that?”
“Its from where Robin was before he disappeared.”
“What are you looking for?”
“Right now? Anything that is out of the ordinary.”
“There is a different type of black ash?”
“Not that you can see without a microscope. Come and I’ll show you.”
Leading Starfire into his lab of a room, Cyborg placed the slide under his high-tech microsope. Focusing, he found what he was looking for.
“Look.”
“What am I looking for?”
“You see the sparkling?”
“Indeed. The light dances.”
“Well, from what I know. There is too much going on, I think.”
“Meaning what, friend?”
“Meaning Robin isn’t dead.”
“Then what happened to him?”
“I think that whatever Slade used was some sort of teleporting ray or something. I’m not exactly sure but I am sure that Robin isn’t gone for good.”
The light that had left Starfire’s eyes returned. Robin wasn’t gone? He was still around? How? Did that mean that he could be coming back at any moment?
“I don’t know where though,” Cyborg broke in.
“Then we must find him. We must get the others.”
“Ok Star but I can’t promise anything.”
The hope that grew in Starfire did not dwindle. Nothing that anyone could say could bring down her hopes. As soon as the others joined her in the main room, Starfire’s royal life on Tameran seemed to awaken. She took control of the situation, a real rarity for her. Giving each of the others instructions, she practically demanded that they find Robin.
“We’ll try,” Beast Boy said.
“I’ll adjust my scanners to find him,” Cyborg said.
Raven just nodded.
Beast Boy turned into a dog and began sniffing, trying to find some sort of trail to find Robin. But the tower was definitely not the place to start. Heading out, he traveled the city, trying his best to pick up where Robin was. Cyborg, once he was finished with recalibrating his systems, took his leave, trying to find Robin’s transmitter frequency. “Must be broken,” he said as he left. Raven however, did not move from her spot.
“Are you not going to aid in searching for Robin?”
“I am.”
“But you are not moving.”
“If you let me concentrate, I can project a part of my soul and travel the city.”
“Without leaving our home?”
“Yes Star,” Raven replied, a slight bit of frustration edging into her voice.
As soon as silence fell upon the tower, Raven began to chant her three special words. Right in front of Starfire’s eyes, a black raven seemed to leave the dark titan’s body. It was a bit scary but if it could help find Robin, anything was better then nothing. Locking the door behind her, Starfire flew off to help find Robin herself. “He is out there,” she thought, “I will bring you back.”
Starting at the north side of Jump City, Starfire flew up and down the alleys, looking for any sign of her missing friend. She came across a few people that she thought was Robin, but only in the shadows. As soon as she saw their face or heard their voice, she moved on. “Where are you?” she thought. Landing in front of the city park, she hoped that he might be there. The park was pretty quiet at night, perfect to stop and think. “Robin will surly be here,” she thought as she walked under the shadows of the trees. It was the perfect. “Robin?” she cried out as she heard a rustling in the bushes. “Robin? Is that you?” Before she could react, a shadowy figure emerged holding a knife.
“Bad time to be out here alone bitch.”
“What did you call me?”
“A bitch. Now shut the fuck up and hand over your purse.”
“I do not have one.”
“Then give me you bracelets and necklace.”
“These?”
“Yeah. Now shut the fuck up and hand them over before I cut your damn throat.”
Reaching out, he grabbed her wrist and roughly pulled. That was it. No more niceties. Starfire’s eyes burned with green rage and she grabbed the mugger by the throat and levitated herself off the ground a good three feet. The once rough man now acted like a child in her grasp.
“Please let me down,” he begged.
“Why? Why show mercy to a species that has take the best friend I ever had? Answer me!”
Though the sky was dark, Starfire could see the fear that her victim had in his eyes. He had nothing to do with Robin’s disappearance or any sort of connection to Slade. Hell, he didn’t even know who the guy was. He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong intentions.
“I’m sorry.”
“Sorry? Sorry! After all that I’ve lost today, you expect me to let you go? You are going to prison where the rest of you belong!”
“Please don’t. I’m just try to—“
“Shut up!”
“Lady please don’t. You don’t understand.”
“I understand enough.”
Temporarily distracted, the Tameranian practically threw her mugger inside the jail walls. Then she fell to her knees crying. Tears streamed down her face. She wanted Robin back. She would give anything to see him and hold him in her arms. No challenge, no war, no enemy would be too great for her. Starfire would even face the HIVE and Slade on her own if it meant having Robin back. “He is more then a friend,” she thought, “I care for him more then a friend. I might love him. I do love him. Why did I never tell him? Why could I not? I have said so many other things and yet I did say those words?” Gripping the ground, she crushed the rocks that her hands had rested upon. Seeing as how she had been unsuccessful, she went back to the tower to wait for the others to report.
Flying over the city, her revelation became her obsession. Not only did she want to find Robin because he was her friend but also because of the love that she had for him, a special love, one that the Tameranian princess had never experienced before. What’s more is that the others were already at the tower, their faces saying it all, except Raven who didn’t show anything.
“You did not find Robin?”
“I couldn’t,” Cyborg said shaking his head.
“Neither could I,” Raven said.
“Or me,” Beast Boy finished.
“Wait. Why could you not find him friend Cyborg? I believed that your technology would allow you to find our friend wherever he is.”
“Something happened to the communicator when Slade got him. I don’t know what but I can tell you that my scanners aren’t picking up anything. Maybe his communicator was knocked off and he doesn’t know it.”
“And you Beast Boy? Why could you not smell out Robin?”
“Believe me when I say that you are lucky to not smell even half the things I did. Whew.”
“Beast Boy. Just answer Star. Can’t you see that she’s hurting?”
“Just tried to lighten the mood. Sorry.”
“Please tell me. I am not feeling like I wish for a joke.”
“Well I thought that I found Robin but I found a cape. That’s it. I tried to follow the scent but it went through a garbage dump and I lost it there.”
“Wait!” Cyborg said. “You lost him where?”
“The garbage dump. Why?”
“Because that’s where we can start the search.”
Starfire’s eyes brightened again. They had a point from which to find Robin? Really? That was the best news that she had heard all day. Perhaps they could find him their and bring him home.
“This time I’m coming with you,” Raven said to the group.
“You did not find him did you friend Raven?”
“No, but Beast Boy might have put on the trail.”
“Then let us go to this garbage dump,” Starfire said.
Beast Boy turned into a pterodactyl and Cyborg got on his back. Flying next to Starfire and Raven, the four titans headed. With luck, Robin would be there somewhere, even if he were under a pile of junk. Starfire flew as fast as she could as she envisioned Robin there waiting to be rescued. “Hurry,” she shouted back to the others, pressing them to exceed their current pace.
Once they arrived at the junkyard the Tameranian half expected Robin to be waiting for her. But she did not see him. Instead, one of Robin’s shoes was under a crushed car. “Robin!” Starfire screamed lifting the wreckage. “Remind me to never get on Starfire’s bad side,” Beast Boy whispered to Cyborg, who nodded. Under the debris, there was nothing but more junk. Robin was not there. Then where could he be?
“Who are you looking for?” a voice said behind them.
“Who are you?” Beast Boy asked.
“I am Fixit.”
Cyborg remembered him. He was the one that had tried to turn him into a complete machine. It had been a close call but that was over. What could this guy be doing on the surface?
“I remember you,” Starfire said.
“Good. How may I help you?”
“We are looking for our friend Robin.”
“Robin. Robin. Ah yes. He was by here but left.”
“Where did he go?”
“I do not know that. I caught a glimpse of him from under ground and came up to see what was happening.”
“And what was happening?” Raven asked.
“He seemed to be in the midst of a great battle with many foes.”
“In which direction did he go?” Starfire asked.
“East.”
“That was when?” Cyborg asked.
“Thirty three minutes and twelve seconds from when I finish this sentence.”
“Then he could be anywhere by now,” Beast Boy said.
“Not exactly. If Fixit is right, and I’m sure he is, then Robin couldn’t be more then two square miles from here?” Cyborg said.
“One point five,” Fixit corrected.
“Whatever. The point is that he is close and we could find him soon. What’s in one and a half miles from here?”
“The tower,” the four titans said in unison.
It was highly likely that Robin would slowly move back to the tower if he were being overwhelmed. Even he knew when it was not in his favor to fight on.
“Then we must head in the same direction. Thank you friend Fixit.”
“You are welcome.”
Heading back to the tower with a new sense of hope and joy, Starfire raced ahead of the others. If Robin was there, she was going to be the one that welcomed him back and tell her how she felt about him. More then anything else, she wanted, needed to tell him. “I am coming Robin,” she thought, “Just be there for me.”
