Part Three: Business as Usual
By the time Diana stepped off the Watchtower transporter pad, she had regained her composure. What should she have expected from him, anyway? It was ludicrous for her to think that one night could change his mindset that years of sacrifice had only reinforced.
She had offered him a one-time encounter, hoping that he would view it as an invitation to escape the strictures of his life rather than bait for a trap. Once again, though, Bruce had rejected her. It was obvious that his decision to remain alone was not made without pain, without longing. And it was equally obvious that his decision was final. They had shared an intimate evening, and that was all it could ever be.
As she hurried through the hallways, Diana wondered how awkward their next meeting would be. It would most likely be in the context of League business. She reminded herself that while she wore her uniform, she was Wonder Woman, and not just Diana of Themyscira. Although she wasn't as accomplished as Bruce was at separating her personal and professional lives, she could close off her private life when duty called. The warrior's discipline Athena had bestowed on her would help her to focus.
At least for a little while.
Diana's steps slowed as she focused her thoughts on the job at hand. Pausing to clear her head, she finally entered the Monitor Womb to take over from Captain Atom. As she settled into the chair, she asked, “Anything going on?”
“There's a potential situation on the island of Ifalik. The nearest monitoring station indicates that the volcano may erupt within the next 48 hours. The government has instituted an evacuation, but they contacted us in case they need help rescuing citizens in remote areas. So far, they're handling it well. Other than that, it's just been business as usual.” He shouldered his messenger bag. “See you later. Let me know if you need me to help out.”
Diana brought up the database of League members, querying it by those on active duty but not assigned elsewhere, location, and ability to fly or to pilot an aircraft. She saved her results in case the volcano's eruption would necessitate immediate contact with the heroes on her list. An idle thought occurred to her, I wonder how many people J'onn can contact at once?
Fortunately for Diana, the League and the citizens of Ifalik, the volcano remained quiescent for the moment. She even had time to send an e-mail to Queen Audrey of Kasnia and catch up on world and local news. As she scanned the headlines of the Gotham Examiner, an item in the business section caught her eye: “WayneTech, ChemCorp Merger Rumored”.
Bruce must be busy.
Suddenly, a red blur appeared out of the corner of her eye. “Hey, Di.”
She glanced at the Flash out of the corner of her eye, “Wally, shouldn't you be home playing video games or something? You had Monitor Duty last night, didn't you?”
Flash sighed, an uncharacteristically doleful expression crossing his face. “Yeah, I did. But there's not much going on at home today, and I figure the more time I spend up here, the more likely someone's going to send me on another mission.”
Diana looked away. She wasn't sure what to tell him; she didn't make the mission assignments. Sure, he was immature at times, but he was a valued member of the team, and…
Flash sensed her discomfort and hastily interrupted her thoughts, “But I didn't come here to gripe, Di – I…wanted to find out how you were doing.” Recalling his conversation with Green Arrow the previous night and their lurid speculations as to what exactly Bruce and Diana had been up to, he had wondered how things had gone. Okay, she's this tough Amazon warrior who treats me like her kid brother, but c'mon! She grew up without men – how much can she know about them, anyway? He better not have broken her heart, or I'll…
What? Give him a wedgie? It'd be safer to give Lex Luthor a noogie. At least Lex would kill you in an indirect way – you'd be breathing for a few days before his goons caught up with you. Bats, on the other hand – who knows?
“I'm…” Diana was surprised to find herself stammering. “…I'm fine, why do you ask?”
Her discomfort appeared to be contagious. Flash reddened slightly, looked away and muttered, “Justwantedtoknowyou'reokay. You'relikeasistertomeand…” He finally slowed down, though still speaking under his breath. “I wanted to make sure he didn't hurt you.”
It took Diana a moment to parse his meaning, and when she did, she wasn't sure how to react. How in Hades did he know?! She was torn between confiding in him, hugging him, beating him senseless for spying on her, and laughing at him for his obvious assumption that she knew nothing about the ways of men.
She gazed at him levelly, stifling her conflicting emotions. “Are you suggesting that I need rescuing? I’m not that kind of princess.”
Flash immediately regretted ever entering the Monitor Womb. Damn. “I know, but he's…you're…”
She watched him, seemingly impassively, as he tried to put his thoughts into words. Finally, he looked up and blurted, “Face it, Diana: you're light; he's darkness. You're truth; he's…”
“Are you implying that Bruce is a liar?” Her response had a hint of steel.
Flash forced himself to continue, “No, but he's not honest with himself. He'll never admit that he needs us, or anyone, for that matter.” He paused to see her reaction.
“Go on.” He noticed her hands clench and hoped that he could finish his thought before she attacked him.
“Look, Bats is the smartest one of us, right, but he's also the guy who basically tried to suicide with the Watchtower. Yeah, he took out the Thanagarians, but Supes could have done the same thing – without risking his life. The dude's messed up, Diana, and I don't want to see him take you down with him.”
He watched in silence as she thought, a momentary wave of sadness crossing her face. When she spoke, he could hear the tension in her voice. “Thanks for your concern, Wally, but you don't have to worry. Batman and I work together, and that's all.” She turned back to the monitoring screens in a gesture of dismissal.
To his credit, and Diana's surprise, Flash said nothing.
