Sabrina was shaking so much she could hardly dial the telephone. She was thinking about her sister lying in the hospital, hurt and alone.
"I have to call mom Amy, she has Sabrina's mother's phone number. The hospital needs to know some more information." Sabrina explained, all the while her fingers nervously dialed her mothers number. Her mother cheerfully answered the phone, she had always been an early riser.
"Sabrina, so nice to hear from you, but isn't it a little early for you to be calling."
"Mom there's been an accident! Sabrina and her Great Aunt have been badly hurt." She found it hard to say the words.
Endora gasped! "Oh no!"
"You have to get hold of Sabrina's mother." Sabrina informed her mother of what the hospital told her then hung up the phone. "Amy, I'm going to the hospital, can you stay around and listen for the phone?"
"Sure Sabrina, you go see what you can find out about your sister. Call me if you can?" Amy was also concerned about Sabrina, she had grown fond of her this last week. "Will do." Sabrina headed for her room to get dressed and then it was off to the hospital. The nurse at the desk directed Sabrina to an observation ward. It was a large room with many ailing people and on the far end nearest the wall was Sabrina. Attending to her was a nurse whom Sabrina surprised.
"Oh my!" Said the nurse. " Hello, can I help you?" Then the nurse realized the connection. "You're twins."
"Yes, she's my sister. Do you know anything about her condition or how this happened?" Sabrina said to the nurse and went back to staring at her tattered and torn sister.
"I'm sorry Miss, I don't. She only came in this morning. I can try to find out for you?" She was very sympathetic as she checked the monitors and dressings.
"Oh, could you please?" Sabrina found a chair and pulled it up next to the bed. Sabrina's head was shaved in several places and the bandage wrappings she could see were blood stained. Her nose was scraped and stitched. She was bruised and shaved in many other places; she didn't look at all well. She also had a splint on her left arm and bandages on both legs. Sabrina gently took her sister's bandaged hand and said a small prayer. She seemed to be breathing OK, there were no tubes down her throat which Sabrina thought was a good sign.
She stayed there for hours, until finally a doctor looked in on her. She was an older fox with graying hairs round her muzzle. She picked up Sabrina's chart and took a good look at it. She pried open both of Sabrina's eyes to check pupil dilation. "Are you a relative?" She asked, not really making the connection that they were twins.
"She's my sister." Sabrina said hoarsely.
"Ah, now I see the resemblance. Sorry, I guess I was a bit preoccupied. I've seen a lot of patients this morning. It's been a very long day so far."
"How is she?" said Sabrina with great concern in her voice. The bandages and blood had her worried. She didn't look good at all.
"Well, she has a major concussion plus several deep cuts to the head. Which are always tricky and have to be watched very carefully. Unfortunately cases like hers usually end up with the patient slipping deeper & deeper into a coma. She also has a couple of broken ribs and a broken arm. They will take time to heal. The rest is bruising but she'll be here for a while Miss.
Sabrina wasn't sure if this doctor would know but she thought it wouldn't hurt to ask. "She was brought here with her Great Aunt, do you know anything of her?"
"Afraid not young lady, sorry. Your sister here needs rest and it doesn't hurt to have a family member present either. She could awaken at any time and it would probably be nice for her to see a familiar face. There is not much I can do for her at the moment. We will have to see what happens when she awakens. Then we can see if any brain damage has occurred." She wrote some things in the chart and started to walk away.
"Thank you Doctor." Brain damage she thought, that wasn't good at all.
The doctor turned back, "It's good she has a sister like you to keep her company." The doctor turned and moved on to another patient.
Sabrina's mind was full of horrible thoughts. "You have to pull out of this Sabrina! We've only known each other for such a short time. I want to get to know you better. I want us to be best of friends, to share our feelings and experiences." She prayed and squeezed her hand ever so gently, just to show her she was there.
Sabrina's mother arrived and Sabrina filled her in as to what the doctor said. Sabrina found her another chair and they sat and talked.
"That doesn't sound so good." Endora said voicing her concerns.
"I know Mom, I feel so helpless."
"I know dear, I feel the same. I did gather some news, I found someone who was able to tell me about Sabrina's Great Aunt, her condition is serious. They said that she will probably not make it through the night."
Sabrina liked Sabrina's Great Aunt and she felt horrible at the fact that she wasn't going to make it. "Oh no!" She wished she knew more about what happened. "Mom do you know what happened to them?"
"I don't know anymore than you do sweetheart. I did get a hold of Margrette and she is coming as soon as she can. She'll be here early tomorrow morning and she'll be staying with me. It's good that you came, I'm sure that Sabrina would appreciate it. Will you get in trouble for taking time off work?"
"I'm pretty sure Zig Zag will understand. Sabrina is going to need a lot of care and I want to help as much as I can. I believe you and Margrette are going to have to plan a funeral and go through her Great Aunt's things."
"Yes I believe so, I wanted so much to see Margrette but not like this." Endora sighed, knowing that this could lead to an even more tragic end. "Did the doctor say anything else that you can remember?"
"Not that I know of, she was to the point and very busy."
"They all seem to be that way. Well it looks like a waiting game for us from now on. You will like Margrette, it will be nice to see her again but I wish it were under better circumstances." It had been a long time since she had seen her and she wasn't sure how she was going to take this. Frank's Aunt and maybe her daughter, it's not a fate she would wish on anyone. Losing a child is something no parent ever wants to face. "How long are you going to stay?"
"Probably till noon, I kinda left in a hurry this morning. I didn't even have breakfast."
"Well there doesn't seem to be much I can do here, I'm going back home. If there is any change you call me." She looked at Sabrina in the bed one more time. It was a sight that hurt her inside, it was like looking at her own daughter and a shiver ran up her spine.
"Will do mom." Sabrina watched as her mother left the room. She glanced around and felt really sorry for all the other people here as well. She thought about Sabrina's mother knowing how worried she must be at this moment. She just wished she could do more to help.
The morning went by so slowly that it was like watching paint dry. She looked at the clock and couldn't believe it was only noon. She called Amy and her mother and told them what was going on. She stayed another hour and decided it was time to take a break. She needed some food and a shower. She squeezed Sabrina's hand and told her softly that she would return soon. She hated leaving but she didn't have much of a choice. She was just about to the doorway when Sabrina awoke screaming. She ran back to her side trying to hold her down and trying to calm her. She was flailing about and screaming at the top of her lungs. It awoke all the other patients in the room. Alarms were going off and Sabrina's I.V. popped out of her arm. She was on the verge of falling out of bed. She desperately tried to hold her down all the while calling her name and trying to get her to stop before she hurt herself.
Nurses came running in immediately after the screaming started and struggled along side of Sabrina to calm her sister down. Finally they gave her a sedative and she fell back to sleep. They all hoped that she hadn't hurt herself any further. They thanked Sabrina for her help as they left. They put the railings up on the bed and attached a few more monitors to keep a closer watch on her. Sabrina wasn't too sure about going home now, but a nurse said the sedative would put her out for hours. They were concerned that she would wake again, so a long term sedative was authorized. She thanked the nurse and when she got home Amy was anxious to know what was happening. "Any change?" She said. "Well, she woke up briefly, screaming and trying to fling herself out of the bed. That was something anyway."
"That doesn't sound very good. Did she hurt herself?"
"They don't know. I wrestled with her trying to calm her and the nurses gave her a sedative. She will sleep for sometime now, so I thought I would take a break."
"Well it was good that you were there. I'm glad she has you, I don't think I've told you but I like her very much. I've become very fond of her since she has been here. She is a lot like you but different. Physically it's hard to tell you apart, but if you left me in a room with both of you I'm sure I could eventually tell you apart."
"I'd love to put that to the test, sometime." She said with a grin. "My mom came to say that Sabrina's mother is coming tomorrow. Also that Sabrina's Great Aunt wasn't going to make it."
"Oh no! Do you know what happened to them?"
"I don't but mom is going to do some digging."
"I hope she finds something."
"Well someone has to know what happened that's for sure. I'm going to have a shower if the phone rings get it." She gave Amy a hug and softly said, "Why her?"
Amy really had no answer. "I don't know." Was all she could say.
After having a shower and some lunch Sabrina decided to head back to the hospital. She packed a few books and her art pad. She thought she might try to draw something. She was about to leave when the phone rang. Amy picked it up and Sabrina listened from a distance.
"Hello, yes ... Hi Mrs. Mustelidae, nice to hear from you. Yes she's here, have you heard anything. Uh huh … Oh I'm sorry to hear that." She motioned for Sabrina to come to the phone. "OK I'm putting Sabrina on now." She handed her the phone.
"Hi mom I was just about to head back to the hospital."
"I found out what happened to them dear. It seems Sabrina's Great Aunt must like morning walks and they were on one of these when a drunk driver ran them down. Her Aunt took most of the hit. One of the nurses at the hospital just notified me that Sabrina's Great Aunt died about a half hour ago."
There was silence for a minute, then Sabrina answered. "Hopefully she didn't suffer very much."
"Let's hope dear, now more than ever Sabrina needs our help."
"Yes I was just on my way to the hospital."
"That's nice dear, tell me if you find out anything new."
"Sure thing mom, will do." She hung up the phone and said good-bye to Amy.
The hospital was busy and there were a few more people in the room where Sabrina was being kept. The doctor just happened to be there examining Sabrina.
"Hello Doctor, has there been any change."
"Oh hello again Miss ... ah I didn't get your last name."
"Miss Sabrina Mustelidae."
"Very nice to meet you Miss Mustelidae, could I have a private talk to you out in the hall for a moment?" Asked the lady Doctor.
"Sure." They proceeded out into the hall, there the Doctor started to explain some things to Sabrina.
"Miss. Mustelidae I have to explain a few things to you about your sister. I was informed that she awoke briefly which you were here for. This is typical of a head injury. The brain is injured and somehow it tries to repair itself. Sometimes it happens with very dramatic results as you have seen first hand. It also gives off false signs, which are interpreted in the wrong manner by family members." She paused to see if Sabrina understood.
Sabrina took the hint and filled in the rest. "You mean even though she awoke it doesn't mean that she's going to awaken or be better real soon."
"Precisely, it maybe true that she will indeed wake up tomorrow. But it can also mean she won't wake up for months. I'm sorry Miss. Mustelidae but I have to give you the unfortunate truth of what's happening. I wanted you to know that things could go on for quite awhile. I'm hoping that she will wake up soon but it's all a waiting game now. Her other wounds will heal and she is in no danger from those. Time sometimes can heal all wounds but not always."
"Thanks doctor, is there anything I can do? I feel sorta helpless."
"Yes there are things you can do, being here is one. Patients somehow know when someone is here, it's been documented. We don't understand how, it's one of the quirks of nature I guess. Music always helps, if you know what she likes to listen to, then bring it in. It might help. Other than that I can only say, be patient."
"Thanks Doctor, those things I can do."
"Good to hear, now go back to your sister, she needs you."
She smiled at Sabrina and it seemed to have a positive effect.
