Chapter 29
“Ron?”
“Betty!”
“Hi, just wanted to let you know that we're going to be in Riverdale next week visiting Reggie's parents. We thought we'd drop off the keys for your villa,”
“You guys done with it already? That's a short honeymoon,” Betty laughed at that idea. A month-long honeymoon would normally be considered excessive.
“Yeah, we've got to get the room for our baby ready,”
“Right. Come and stay a few days at Lodge Mansion II. It's gorgeous! We've got the wing for the twins done up, and we have this wonderful pool! Not to mention the bowling alley plus a cinema in the basement,”
“Okay, okay, I will,” Betty said. “See you in a few days, bestie,”
“Got it. Bye!”
It was Summer in Riverdale. The sun battered down on Reggie and Betty as they walked up the steps into Ron and Archie's home.
“Well hello there, Mrs Mantle,” Ron's butler said, a young man with dark hair slicked back and a sharp nose. “Mr Mantle,” He nodded at Reggie, who nodded back.
“Sanderson! Are they-” Ron yelled from the top of the banister. As soon as she saw her friends she squealed and descended the stairs quickly.
“Careful, Ron! You want to get hurt?!” Betty yelled at her best friend.
Ron rolled her eyes at Betty, but slowed her pace. She landed before her friends and squealed, before hugging Betty. Betty hugged her back, unable to help her excited screech. They pretended not to notice the men wincing at their high-pitched excitement.
“How are you?!” Ron asked.
“I'm fantastic!”
“Oh, that's wonderful!” Ron responded. “Do you know when your due date is yet?”
“Not for another month. How about you?”
“Any day now!”
They were so encompassed in catching up that they had to be reminded by Sanderson, Ron's butler, that the living room had been prepared for them. And after they entered the room, the conversation even turned to Sanderson, who Ron elaborated as having been a trainee of Smithers and when he was done, Smithers had recommended him to Ron.
On and on they chattered. Even Reggie and Archie talked amongst themselves, slightly less excitedly, of course. They talked about sport, their jobs, the preparation of their baby rooms, whose child would be better at wrestling.
“Mine will, obviously,” Archie boasted. “There's two of them as well. They can practice on each other,”
“Well, my girl is going to take after her parents. She'll be a spitfire worthy of the World Wrestling Association,” Reggie retorted.
“You know it's a girl, then?” Ron asked, sipping from a cup of beautifully decorated china.
“No, but Reggie is convinced it's a girl,” Betty answered for her husband, fanning herself. “Is it just me, or is it getting hotter?” Betty asked, wondering if a person could get warm from talking excessively.
“No, you're right,” Ron frowned. She rang a bell to her side, and Sanderson appeared at the door and answered before Ron could ask her question, seeming to know exactly what she wanted.
“I'm sorry, ma'am. It seems that the air conditioning has abruptly broken down,” Sanderson said. “The men are working at it now. It should take another hour or two to start working again,”
“Phew, it's really warming up,” Reggie said, grabbing a cushion on one of the couches and pretending to fan Archie, hitting him by 'accident'. Archie smacked him back.
“Guys, guys, you're just making the air warmer,” Betty said, but they neither acknowledged nor heeded her advice as the two mid-twenty men began a pillow fight. Betty had to admit, if she wasn't pregnant – and the weather wasn't set on boiling – she would join in.
I guess some things will never change.
The thought made her smile.
“Oh, I know! How about we take a dip in the pool? It'll be a fantastic way to cool down. That's what we always used to do, back in the day, remember Betty?” Ron asked excitedly, hit by her sudden brainwave. Even the men paused in their fight.
“...You're joking, right? I know I look like a whale, but...” Betty commented.
“No you don't!” Ron smacked her on the arm. “Don't be ridiculous. Come on, the sun is shining, it's a beautiful day and our pool is pristine. We need to break it in before our diaper-filling, drool-dripping, constantly crying babies arrive,”
“Lovely description of your own children,” Reggie quipped.
“Oh shush you guys,”
“Ronnie, it's a good idea, but I don't think there are any swimsuits that would fit me,” Us. She thought, looking at Ron's swell, which was twice as big since it was filled with twice as many.
“Never underestimate me, Betty dearest. Especially when it comes to swimsuits,” Ron said, and began dragging Betty off. “Come on, I'll find you some.”
“Wha- Wait. No! I don't- Reggie, help me!”
But like the wonderful husband he was, Reggie just grinned and waved her off, his mirth written all over his face.
Less than a half hour later, they'd decided to cool off at the pool, which Betty had to admit – was gorgeous. It was twice as large as the original Lodge mansion's, with a shallow area for the children to wade in when they were old enough. There was even a bar at the far end opposite the wading pool. The water shone in the sun, and it was chilling, but not icy cold. It was just right for the weather. She'd only dipped a foot in it so far, though. She and Ron were reclined on the pool-side chair.
“What's taking the men so long?” Betty wondered aloud, lowering the sunglasses she'd borrowed from Ron to look at her friend, who seemed like she was enjoying the sun.
“Who knows. Maybe they're busy putting on their make-up,”
“They're probably held up by my husband. Reggie probably caught his reflection and decided to admire it for a bit,” Betty rolled her eyes heavenward, despite the tinge of pride she said it with.
Ron giggled at the truth of that statement.
“Hey, I resent that,” Reggie said. The women followed the direction of his voice and the two of them admired their husbands. Betty knew then that she definitely did not have any feelings for Archie anymore, because not even a tiny bit of her mind registers Archie in his swim trousers. She's too distracted by her husband's perfectly athletic form.
She didn't know what Archie was doing, but Reggie was definitely doing the same. He studied her, obviously, taking in the breasts bulging out of the maternity swimsuit, a black one-piece that managed to hold her baby. It had been one of Ron's, a few months ago before she grew even more mammoth-like.
Reggie took a step towards Betty, before kneeling beside her. “Milady. May I escort you into the pool?” He asked, giving her a coy look while extending his hand towards her.
Betty looked at him suspiciously, her eyes narrowed. “You're going to throw me in, aren't you?”
He looked deeply offended. “Of course not!” He exclaimed. “I'll only do things like that when Kierra isn't around,” Reggie winked at his wife, lovingly rubbing her belly with his other hand. She rolled her eyes, but took the hand he had offered to her. He helped her up and they were soon immersed in the cool water.
“Ahh... This is the life,” Betty sighed. She didn't even have to put in any effort to float. Reggie just held her up in the water, like the loving husband he was. In her peripheral vision she could see Ron being helped into the water by Archie, descending the stairs of the pool one by one slowly. She didn't care about that. The only thing that mattered was how lovely and cool the water was.
And then she was abruptly dropped into the water. She gasped and found her way up to the surface, where she found a laughing Reggie swimming away.
“That's not funny!” She yelled at him, sputtering water.
He just laughed harder.
So she tried to splash him. Her spattering of water barely reached him. His revenge, however, was amazing. He swept the water in her direction so hard that she found herself completely wet again, as if she had been submerged. It didn't stop there, he splashed her over and over again.
Betty could hear Archie and Ron laughing in the background. But barely, since the sound of water impacting against her was blocking out everything.
When Reggie finally stopped, Betty was furious. But rather than showing it, she decided to express it in another manner. She sunk under, and began swiping at the water, as if trying to swim and failing.
“Hel-” She managed to blubber, before forcing herself down again. She barely managed to catch the look on Reggie's face, which she could only describe in one word – priceless.
In a mere moment, she found herself pulled up by her husband. She stared at him, slightly surprised that he managed to get to her so fast. His face, though, told her that he wished he could have gotten there sooner.
“Blondie. Blondie, you okay? Bets! Bets!”
She just pretended to stare at him blankly for a moment, soaking up the concern from her usually smug husband. Then when she thought he had suffered enough she flicked his nose and winked. “Gotcha,”
His mouth dropped open. Her grin widened.
“...I cannot believe that you did that to me,” He protested, though he didn't release her.
“And I cannot believe you splashed me,” She retorted, raising a challenging eyebrow at him.
He stared at her dumbly for another second, then grinned. “I knew I married you for a reason,” He said.
“Agreed,” She said, then she splashed him right in the kisser.
He let her go abruptly, choking on some water he swallowed. She laughed and darted way as fast she could, but he had caught her within seconds. With her in his arms, the splashing battle ensued at close-range, ending with them laughing their butts off.
They were only stopped by a loud cry.
The Mantle couple halted their fight and stared in Ron's direction, where the scream had come from. She herself was imitating the same moves Betty had pulled a few minutes ago, seeming to struggle to stay afloat.
“Hey... is she?” As each moment passed, so did Betty's suspicion of Ron acting to get attention. Archie himself was by the side of the pool, standing right next to Sanderson, the butler. “Reggie!” Betty spun in his arms to tell her husband to help her friend in her place, knowing that she wouldn't be able to get there as fast, but he didn't move. He just stood there, face devoid of color.
Archie jumped into the pool, making an almighty splash as he dived in and headed to the mother of his children. Reggie made a movement then, proving to Betty that he wasn't a statue. His grip on her tightened and he began heaving both of them over to Ron. Archie had already gotten there though, and was busy leading Ron towards the stairs.
He placed her on the top one. “Babe? You okay? Ron?” He asked. She didn't seem to have inhaled too much water, but her face was really pinched, as if she was in horrible pain. She reached out and grasped Archie's arm, before letting out a shrill screech.
Betty and Reggie had finally reached the stairs. Betty took one look at Ron, and she knew.
“Sanderson!” She snapped at the stunned butler, who was still rooted to his spot by the pool. “Call an ambulance. Ron's in labor!”
Sanderson stared at her in horror, and she wondered if she would have to get out of the pool herself and call the damn ambulance, but eventually he disappeared into the house.
“Okay, Ronnie, how far apart are the contractions?” Betty asked.
“I-I don't know,”
“Concentrate!”
Ron looked at her with a panicked, glazed kind of look. “M-maybe ten minutes?”
“Why didn't you say anything?!” Betty asked her, but Ron just shook her head, unable to answer.
“Miss!” Sanderson called from inside the house, poking his head out through the double glass doors, causing them all to look to him. “The ambulance won't be here for another twenty minutes,”
“What the fuck!?” Ron yelled. “I'm having babies here!” Sanderson looked strained. He didn't know what to do.
“Okay, come on, Ron. I'm driving you to the hospital,” Archie tried to help her up.
“Go help,” Betty shoved Reggie in Archie's direction. After a moment's hesitation, he nodded.
“Take my car,” Reggie told his friend. “It's already in the walkway. That should make it easier,”
“I'm driving,” Archie said. Reggie didn't argue.
It took longer than expected to get Ron in the car. She could barely walk, and once she experienced a contraction so bad she lashed out at the men, and they nearly dropped her.
Betty got in the back with a howling Ron, holding her hand and speaking to her in soft tones while the men got in the front, with Reggie directing Archie to the hospital.
“I know where it is!” Archie snapped.
“Yes, but calm down,” Reggie reminded him. “Or you'll get your wife and babies in a car accident,”
Archie bit his lip, but didn't say anything more. He sped most of the way, but didn't run any red lights or anything, which Betty was grateful for. Ron was in enough pain without having to stress about Archie's driving.
When they finally got to the hospital, Betty and Reggie's sigh of relief was interrupted by Ron's scream of agony. She sounded like someone had stabbed her.
“Oh my God, oh my Goddddd!” She yelled.
“Don't worry, Ron, we're almost there,” Betty tried to comfort her as they helped her in the hospital. Everything else was a blur. Nurses and doctors rushed to take the Lodge heiress off somewhere to deliver her babies, seeming prepared probably from Sanderson's warning. Reggie and Betty followed them as far as they could, and were eventually told to stay at some waiting area. Archie followed the nurses into the delivery room, a special privilege extended to the husband of the mother.
Betty sat and Reggie did the same next to her. “Whew,” He said. “This has been an exciting day,”
His wife couldn't help her snort of laughter. She was still in her swimsuit, and was damp. He was still in his swimming trunks. “Exciting doesn't even begin to cover it,” She said.
He chuckled. “But it's great, isn't it?” He said. “Archie's and Ron's babies. I wonder what they'll look like,” He mused.
“Who knows?” Betty said, then sighed. “I hope they're okay though. I honestly thought Ron might die back there,” As she spoke she could still see Ron trying to stay afloat uselessly, fighting against the water as it pulled her down.
“Me too,” He said in a low whisper, and searched for her hand. When he found it, he squeezed it tightly. “...I froze up there, didn't I, Blondie?”
She squeezed his hand back twice. “It's fine. Archie got there, it's fine,”
“I have to confess,” He began, and she couldn't help it. She tensed up. Honesty and Reggie didn't mix. “I didn't exactly freeze up,”
“Huh?”
“I didn't want to go,”
She was silent. She wasn't sure how to respond. She didn't think her husband had any murderous tendencies. But maybe he did. “What do you mean?”
He gripped her hand tighter. “I was scared, Betty. I was scared that the same thing would happen to you,” He leaned back against the wall. “Right after you had given me the scare of my life, that happens to Ron. I was worried you would start drowning too and both Archie and I would be trying to save Ron, too far to get to you,” He took a deep breath, and she wanted to say something to comfort him, but couldn't find the words. “So I just stayed where I was and held on to you,”
“Oh, Reggie...” She rested her head against his, and wound her other arm around his. “You're silly. I was perfectly fine the first time too,”
“...Don't ever do that to me again, though. You can play tricks on me, but I don't want to see you suffering. Not ever,” he told her, nuzzling the top of her head, despite knowing that the hair was plastered against her head, what with the chlorinated water drying it off in its disheveled form.
“I'll do my best,” She said, and held his hand up to her face so she could kiss it.
They sat together for a moment, then he stood to his feet. “Come on. Let's go see if we can go buy some clothes. You're shivering,”
She smiled to herself. Of course Reggie would have noticed without her saying anything. They left for the hospital shops, hand-in-hand.
When they got back to the waiting area, donning shirts that were clearly for charity, they found Archie.
“Archie! What are you doing here? Where is Ron? Is she okay?” Betty asked, trying to rush to him, but failing, what with her baby in the way, not to mention her husband who worried for her welfare and wouldn't let her run even one step.
Archie looked up at them. He was wearing scrubs, with a mask hanging from one ear and a cap covering his head. “I got kicked out. The doctor made the decision to do a caesarean. She wasn't wide enough, and with two babies...” He rubbed his forehead with a groan. “I'm not allowed in while they're cutting up my wife,”
Betty wanted to step forward and comfort him, then hesitated, wondering if that was safe. In the end, it was Reggie who made the first move. He placed a hand on Archie's shoulder and patted him twice. Archie nodded his thanks.
Reggie then sat by his side, before making a gesture for her to sit on Archie's other side. She smiled. She had married a mind-reader. She took her seat and held Archie's hand, squeezing it for support.
The three friends waited in the hospital for Veronica Lodge to safely give birth to her twins.
“Ooh, they're so cute!” Betty squealed, handing Alastair back to Ron, who smiled weakly.
“They are, aren't they?” Ron said, her voice still slightly rough from her screaming ordeal a few days ago. Reggie admired the baby with a few strands sticking out of his head, settled happily in his father's arms, before going to stand at Betty's side as the couple before them held onto their babies. The redheaded one in his mother's arms, while the brunette slept peacefully in his father's.
“I'm glad everything went well, Ron,” Betty said, seated by Ron's bedside, stroking Alastair's little face. The baby instinctively followed her fingers with his brown eyes and she laughed.
“Me too,”
“Me three,” Archie said.
“Me four,” Reggie answered. “And I bet if the babies could talk, they'd say so too,”
“I'm fine with them not talking for a while, thanks. They already make so much noise,” Ron commented. Just as she'd said that, Alastair opened his mouth and started crying, fussing around. She sighed. “See what I mean?”
“I think it's feeding time,” Archie commented as the baby he was holding begins to awake at his father's cries, his tiny eyebrows creasing at having his sleep disturbed.
“Not again,” Ron groaned.
“We should get going,” Reggie said. “Bets and I have an appointment with the hospital's obstetrician,” That, and they wanted to give the brunette some privacy as she breastfed the twins.
“See you guys soon,” Archie said and Ron waved them off. Betty pitied Ron, having seen how she was constantly on call having to breastfeed the twins, despite having been cut open to have them removed. She was a true warrior, though, having recovered in three days.
Reggie led her to the obstetrician's office, seeming to know where it was and she marveled over the fact that they were holding hands. She didn't even know when they had started holding hands.
“...hmm. Everything seems good,” The obstetrician said, tapping a pen against her chin. “I would put your due date in three weeks, Mrs Mantle,” The older woman smiled at the couple, who exchanged a smile. They couldn't wait to have their own baby to hold and listen to cry.
“Wonderful,” Betty said.
“So, just let me know if you have any more concerns,” The woman said, walking them to the door of the consultation office. They said their goodbyes and walked down the hallway, back to their friends to say goodbye before they left for the Lodge Mansion II, where they had been spending their last few nights.
...At least, that was their plan, when Betty planted both feet on the ground abruptly, her eyes going wide.
“Blondie?” Reggie regarded her with a questioning gaze. She looked at him in horror.
“Reggie. I think I'm in labor.”
A/N: I don't even know if you're allowed to breastfeed while in the hospital, only three days after giving birth. But for the sake of this story, let's assume they do, yeah?
