Charlie rubbed her growing belly as she sat down across from Lisa in the bookstore’s office. Her feet were swollen and her neck hurt from the strain of throwing up all morning. She really wanted to go home and have a nap, but there were special orders that needed to be made, bills that needed to be paid, and stock that needed to be sorted. She also wanted to have a talk with her friend about Leonardo…
“Want a coffee?” Lisa asked, as Charlie joined her. “No thanks,” Charlie said with a deep sigh. “I’ll be running to the bathroom all afternoon if I drink any.” Lisa snickered and kept working. Charlie ran her hands through her hair and picked up the top order form. “Did you like going to the symphony?” she asked. She tried to sound casual about it, even though the double-date had been a disaster. Lisa had complained non-stop until Leonardo had to give in and take her home. The air was too cold, the band was too far away to see, the ground was too hard, there wasn’t anywhere to get food… nothing had been good enough. She’d held Leonardo’s hand, because he’d taken it in his, but she’d looked pained, like she didn’t really want to touch him at all. “Huh?” Lisa looked up from her computer and blinked for a moment. “Uh, yeah, it was okay, I guess. I think it’s more your thing than mine, though.” Charlie nodded. “It’s hard to come up with places where the guys can go.” “Yeah, I know,” Lisa sighed. “It really sucks.” “A bit, I guess,” Charlie agreed, “but I don’t really mind. I always have a good time with Donnie, wherever we go.” Lisa shrugged, but didn’t say anything as she went back to work. Charlie watched her for several long moments before decided to push the subject a little further. “It’s different, dating a mutant, huh?” Lisa’s head snapped up and she frowned. “What’s that supposed to mean?” Charlie noted the sudden defensiveness, but did her best to ignore it. She shrugged in a show of nonchalance. “Oh you know… the hiding, the lying, the sewer…” She picked up the payroll paperwork and flipped through it. “The fake social insurance numbers… I never had to worry about any of that when I dated human guys.” “Yeah, it’s a bit of a hassle,” Lisa admitted. “Maybe a little,” Charlie agreed, “but it’s worth it, to have such a wonderful man in my life.” Lisa sipped her coffee and looked over another form. “Well… they aren’t really men, Charlotte. I mean, they’re male alright, but… y’know…” Charlie twiddled her pen around in her fingers. “You don’t think your boyfriend is a man?” Lisa stood up abruptly and stormed over to the door like she was going to leave. She stopped suddenly and just leaned her forehead against the doorframe. “I dunno…” she sighed. “I want to believe he is, but sometimes it’s just too weird, y’know.” “No, I don’t know,” Charlie countered. “It took me a little while to get used to how different they look, but by then, I had a huge crush on Donatello. Being with him romantically was never a weird concept for me.” She leaned back in her chair as Lisa turned to face her. “What do you want me to say, Charlotte?” Lisa snapped. “Cause I really feel like you’re fishing for something.” Charlotte drummed her fingers on the table and frowned at her friend. “Why are you going out with Leonardo?” she asked. “You’re obviously not happy with him, so why are you going out with him?” “I dunno,” Lisa mumbled. She looked tired and nervous. “I can give you fifty reasons why I’m with Donatello,” Charlie went on. “Give me one reason why you’re with Leo. Just one.” Lisa shrugged and leaned back against the door. “He makes me feel safe. I can’t sleep unless I know he’s on the couch in the next room.” “Like a dog,” Charlie said. “Hey! I didn’t say that!” Lisa shouted. She took a defensive step forward and Charlie stood up to meet her. “You didn’t have to,” Charlie said. “Everyone can see how you take and take and take from him, but don’t give anything back.” She closed her eyes and sighed. “Look, Lisa, the guys aren’t as experienced as we are. They don’t know what to do when a relationship isn’t working out… Leo’s done a lot for you and if you’re never going to let him sleep in your bed as your man, then you should do him a favour and let him be free so he can find someone who will appreciate him for all that he is.” Lisa frowned and grabbed her purse from her desk. “Fuck you, Charlotte,” she hissed. She yanked the door open and stormed out of the store. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
