As soon as Donatello swung the big round door shut, blotting out the light and sound from the lair, he stepped close to Charlie and slipped his big arms around her in the dark. She let him pull her in for a long kiss, and her soft lips smiled against his leathery ones as she took note of his enthusiasm. She remembered how eager she’d been to practise this after her first kiss when she was in junior high. Donatello pulled back a bit and rested his forehead against hers.
“How’s the bruise?” he whispered softly.
“Pretty sore” Charlie said, touching it gingerly with her fingertips. “It’s hot and throbbing. I need some more Aspirin”.
“Let’s get you home, then” Don said, pressing a last quick kiss to her mouth before clicking his flashlight on. Charlie blinked in the bright light for a moment before taking his offered hand and following him down a dark tunnel.
“So what did you think?” Don asked, trying to sound nonchalant. The truth be told, he was desperate to know what she thought about his family and his home. He hoped it wasn’t too weird for her. He especially wanted to know what Splinter had said to her while they’d been alone.
“Well, I think you’re right - it is like a big apartment with no windows.” Charlie said, giving his hand a squeeze. She knew he was nervous. “You have a nice home, Donnie, and I’m glad you brought me to see it. I really liked your bugs, too. They’re so cool!”
Donatello’s chest swelled with pride and he grinned at her. She smiled back as they turned a corner.
“Can I ask what Master Splinter wanted to talk to you about?” Donatello asked, stopping to pull down a metal ladder. Charlie’s smile faded instantly and Don suddenly felt a bit sick. He hoped his sensei hadn’t upset her. “No,” Don thought. “Splinter’s too wise to say anything stupid to her.”
Charlie reached for his big green hand and brought it up to her good cheek. She looked into his face and quickly kissed the back of his hand before turning and climbing up the ladder.
“Don’t worry, Donnie, it’s nothing bad,” she said, feeling the ladder shake as he climbed up behind her. “He just thinks that you and I need to talk things over before this goes any further... and I agree” Charlie stepped off onto a wide ledge at the top of the ladder and waited for Donatello. When he got to the top he was frowning and he felt like he was going to throw up. This didn’t sound good at all. Was she dumping him?
“What do we need to talk about?” he said slowly, trying not to fidget. He couldn’t look her in the face. She was going to tell him something awful - he just knew it. “Don’t panic, Don,” he told himself. “You’re a ninja. Ninja’s don’t panic.” He tried to breathe like he did when he was meditating and bravely looked her in the eyes.
“Um… well…” Charlie leaned against the brick wall and thought for a moment. “I think we need to define what this is and what each of us wants it to be” she said carefully. Charlie hadn’t thought they’d have to get into this before they got back to her place. “What if I upset him and he leaves me alone down here?” she thought, suddenly feeling nervous. How well did she actually know him? Splinter was right. This was moving too fast. She gave herself a mental shake. No, the Donnie who changed her light bulbs and walked her home and saved her from her dad would never leave her alone in the dark in the sewer.
Charlie slowly reached a hand out and ran the length of cloth on his mask through her fingers. Donatello stopped frowning and took her hand, leading her down some more dark tunnels in silence. He didn’t speak until they got to the ladder that led up to the alley near her apartment.
“What do you think this is?” he finally asked, turning to look at her.
“I- I honestly don’t know” Charlie admitted. “I like you, Donnie. You’re the best friend I’ve ever had and I like being with you.”
Donatello gripped the ladder hard in his hand as a searing pain ripped through his chest. Friend? He turned his back on her and climbed up the ladder. His throat was thick and his eyes were watering. So she did just want to be friends. He reached the top and roughly shoved the manhole cover out of the way.
“But,” he thought, “if she did just want to be friends, why did she kiss me and touch me like that this afternoon?” More thoughts whirled in his head. “Did she feel that she owed me something for helping her? Is her head injury worse than it looks? Is she a weird sex freak that likes kinky stuff? Does she just pity me because she knows no one’s ever-”
“Donnie?” Charlie was pulling herself out of the manhole and into the alley. What had just happened? She’d just told him that she liked him and that he was a good friend. They’d only kissed for the first time that morning so what was he expecting, confessions of undying love? The last thought hit her like a ton of bricks. What if he was? This was exactly what Splinter had warned her about. Donatello had no prior experience with girls and she’s hurt him because she hadn’t realised just how inexperienced and naive he was.
“I’ll take you back to your place” he said, sliding the cover back over the hole before turning his back again and walking down the alley. He wanted to drop her off as quickly as possible and then hide in the sewer until the pain in his chest went away. He was deading facing his brothers and Splinter back at the lair. They’d be kind to him when they found out that he’d been rejected, but he knew he’d be embarrassed about this forever. He felt like such a fool.
“Donnie!” Charlie called, chasing after him. She reached him and grabbed his wrist, pulling him around to face her. He stood there stiffly, not making eye contact.
“I get it, alright?” he snapped. “You just want to be friends. Fine.”
Charlie let go of his arm and put her hands on her hips. She could do without the attitude. “I didn’t say that, Donatello.”
He blinked at her. “What?”
“I said that I didn’t say that.”
Donatello was confused. “But you said -”
“I said that you were the best friend I’ve ever had. I also said that I liked you and that I liked spending time with you. I did not say that I just wanted to be friends. Now for goodness sakes, let’s get inside before someone sees you.” Charlie strode past him through the alley toward the fire escape.
Don stared at her, not really sure what to say. The biting pain in his chest lessened somewhat, but he felt more confused than ever. Was she mad at him? Did she still want to be his girlfriend? Suddenly the penny dropped and he understood what she meant when she said they needed to talk things over. He hurried down the alley and climbed up the fire escape after her. By the time he rolled in through the window, she’d already made it to the kitchen and was pouring them both a glass of iced tea. She passed him a glass and went into the livingroom to sit on the couch.
“You didn’t ask me what I think this is” he said, setting the glass down on the coffee table.
Charlie sighed and had a drink. “Alright… What do you think this is, Donnie?”
“I don’t know, either… but I know what I’d like it to be.” He reached out and took her small hand in his big one, bringing it to his mouth.
Charlie’s stomach fluttered as he kissed her hand. “I really do like you, Donnie” she whispered, setting her glass down.
“I like you too… a lot” Donatello admitted, taking her other hand with his free one. “I’m sorry about earlier. I just thought that -”
“I know,” Charlie said kindly, squeezing his fingers gently. “I think this is what Splinter was worrying about.”
Don nodded and thought of the hours they’d spent kissing and groping earlier in the day. “Yeah, I know. Too much too fast.”
Charlie cocked her head to one side and thought for a moment. “Maybe a little,” she said, “But I don’t regret any of it.
Donatello grinned broadly. He sure as heck didn’t regret anything they’d done. “Me either” he said, the pain in his chest vanishing as she leaned over and kissed him.
