Charlie and Splinter sipped their hot drinks in silence for a minute. In the distance, she could hear grunts, deep shouts, and the sound of metal clanging as the turtles started their training session. Occasionally there was a loud thud and a bark of laughter from one of them.
“That sounds like it hurt” Charlie commented when she felt the vibrations from a particularly loud thud through the floor.
Splinter smiled slightly, showing some of his pointy rodent’s teeth. “They are very strong, Charlotte. And do not forget that they are also equipped with a natural coat of armour.” He coughed and set his cup down. “It is good that they are hard on each other during their training sessions - there are some outside this lair who will hurt them much more badly and they need to know how to protect themselves.”
Charlie wasn’t sure if that last part was directed at her or not. She knew that Splinter loved the turtles dearly and that although he seemed to like her, he couldn’t help but worry that she would hurt Donatello very badly indeed. She couldn’t blame him, really. Until very recently, Donatello hadn’t even had a relationship with any female other than April. Charlie wondered if any of the others had experienced anything like Donnie just had with her that afternoon. She guessed not.
Charlie took a deep breath and set her cup down on the little table and turned to face Splinter properly. She and the old rat needed to have a heart to heart.
“Master Splinter,” she began, “I like Donatello. I like him very much. I like spending time with him. He’s thoughtful, generous, and he makes me laugh. I work hard and I don’t have many friends and until we started spending so much time together I’d forgotten how nice it is to have someone to care for. I know that the turtles are much more innocent than you and I, and I want you to know that I don’t want to hurt Donnie. I realise that it’s important that things move slowly between him and I so it doesn’t get overwhelming for him - or for me, for that matter.”
Splinter looked her carefully in the eyes for several long moments, considering her words. Finally he nodded, and patted the back of her hand before sipping his tea again. He sighed and looked back at her and for a moment, Charlie could see what he must have been like when he was a man.
“I will not be around for many more years,” he said quietly.
“I think I understand, Master Splinter,” Charlie whispered.
He looked sharply at her. “Do you?” he said.
She nodded. “They’ve never experienced the death in their family,” she said.
“No. They have not” he paused and looked into his tea. “And I do not wish for them to face it alone.”
They were quiet for another few moments. "Donatello is very fond of you, Charlotte." Charlie blushed, surprised at how glad she was to hear someone say that. "But," continued Splinter, "I am not sure that he has yet sorted out what his intentions towards you are."
Charlie nodded. "I know what you mean, Master Splinter. He and I should talk this over."
Splinter nodded, sipping the last of his tea. He waited for Charlie to finish her coffee before slowly standing and offering her his arm again. “Would you like to come and watch them practise?” he said with a smile.
Charlie grinned. She was itching with curiosity to see what they were doing.
“Shall I take the cups to the kitchen?” she asked, placing them neatly back onto the tray.
“One of the boys will get them” Splinter rasped, well aware that Charlie was trying to please him. The girl didn’t realise that she had impressed him with her kindness and maturity and that she had already won his approval.
Charlie stood and took his arm and he led her down the long hall to the dojo. Splinter pushed open an old wooden door and led her inside to sit next to him on a long bench against the wall. When the turtles saw their sensei enter, they immediately stopped what they were doing and lined up to box politely. He said something in Japanese and they went back to work. They were too disciplined to stop to speak to Charlie although she thought that Donatello gave her a little smile before he went back to the middle of the room with Raphael.
Michelangelo sat at a weight station, and started lifting several hundred pounds with his legs, and Leonardo went back to doing chin-ups with one hand on a bar in the corner.
Raphael and Donatello faced each other in the centre of a big circle of hockey tape and bowed to each other before assuming defensive poses. Suddenly Raphael shouted something loud and charged at Donatello with his sais. Charlie stiffened and gasped, thinking that Donatello was going to be hurt, but Splinter patted her hand again and smiled. Donatello had started spinning his bo around in fast whooshing circles and blocked Raph’s attack.
Raphael spun around and kicked Don solidly in his chest, sending him flying backward, but Don kept the bo spinning and knocked Raph’s legs out from under him. They both rolled and flipped themselves back onto their feet in seconds.
The whole thing was very dramatic, but as far as Charlie could tell, they were fairly evenly matched and it would take a mistake on the part of one for the other to win.
Back and forth the fought, knocking each other down (causing the bone-jarring thuds that Charlie had heard in the livingroom) and kicking and hitting each other with powerful limbs.
Finally, after nearly twenty minutes, Raphael caught a big green toe in a tear in the mat and tripped. Donatello kneed him in the side as he fell and Raphael wound up flat on his back with the end of Don’s bow an inch away from mashing his face in.
“Gotcha!” Don laughed.
“Oh really?” Raphael smirked, his eyes lowering from Donatello’s face to his groin where a sais was an inch away from turning Don into a girl. To Charlie’s surprise, Don didn’t blush, but laughed along with the other turtles as he moved his bow and Raphael hopped to his feet. They slapped each other on the back and moved to the equipment as Michelangelo and Leonardo took their place.
Leonardo only used one sword and kept his other arm behind his back so it would be a fair fight with Michelangelo who could only use one nunchuck. Charlie enjoyed watching them fight, but she was secretly more interested in watching Donatello’s arms bulge as he quietly pumped iron in the back of the room. The second fight wasn’t as rough as the first one and was over after only a few minutes, when Michelangelo wrapped his nunchuck around Leo’s sword and yanked it out of his hand.
“You snooze, you lose, Leo!” he said as the sword clattered to the floor. Half a second later, Mikey lay flat on his back from Leonardo’s drop-kick.
“So long as they are in the circle, the match is still on,” Splinter explained.
“Aw nuts!” Mikey said, hoping to his feet. “Thanks for making me lose in front of Charlie, dude,” he laughed, trying to pretend to me mad at Leo.
“You hypocrite!” Leo snickered, picking up his sword. “You would have been perfectly happy to see me lose in front of her.”
“I’m not worried,” Mikey shrugged. “Charlie knows I’m tough. Right Charlie?”
She giggled. “That’s right, Mikey!”
Don put his weights down and went to spot Raph while he used the barbells. Raph raised an eyebrow at him when the others couldn’t see, but Don winked at him. He didn’t mind that his brothers were showing off a bit for Charlie. After all, he and Raph had gone out of their way to stage a good show for her, too. Don grinned inwardly as he lowered the barbell over Raph. He knew that his brother had tripped on purpose to make Don look good.
“Best two out of three?” Leo offered Mike.

It was half past ten before the turtles decided to call it quits.
“Ready to go home?” Donatello asked Charlie, slipping his bo back into his belt.
“Yeah, I’d better get to bed soon, actually. I need to be up extra early tomorrow to meet the courier.” She said, successfully hiding a wince as she stood. The painkillers had begun to wear off and her face was starting to throb again. Charlie got a sweaty hug from each of the turtles and then kissed Splinter on the cheek and thanked him for inviting her into his home. Don’s heart beat a little harder as he watched her interact with his master. He looked at his brothers and knew that it meant very much to them, too.
