“Whoa!” Raphael let out as the tray of freshly-washed teacups rattled precariously in his hands. Michelangelo reached out to grab them from his brother. He set them down on the bar and breathed a sigh of relief that they hadn’t smashed all over the floor.
Raphael looked down at Charlie who was crouched down on the floor behind the counter. She’d rocketed out of the elevator and shoved him out of the way in her haste to hide.
“You okay?” Raphael asked, confused.
“Don’t look at me!” Charlie hissed. “It’s my mother!”
“She can’t be that bad,” Mike said as he watched the pregnant woman try to fit in the cabinet under the sink. She was three months along and there was no way she could fit.
The elevator dinged and Charlie grabbed Michelangelo’s leg in fear. “Fuuuuuuck!” she hissed.
“Charlotte?” a shrill voice barked.
“She’s not in today, can I help you?” he asked. He wriggled free from Charlie’s grip and moved to stand with Raphael in front of the counter.
“Don’t lie to me!” the woman snapped. “I saw her get on the elevator downstairs! She was ignoring me!”
“She must have come in to get the mail,” Raphael said. “I’m sure she didn’t see you.”
“Oh she saw me, alright!” the woman trilled dramatically. “She was always so thoughtless. Completely oblivious to the needs of others!” She looked the turtles up and down and sneered. “What ghastly costumes! I can’t believe she makes you wear those hideous things.” Charlotte’s mother wiped a disdainful finger across Raphael’s bicep and sneered again. “It even feels slimy! How disgusting. What are you supposed to be, anyway - frogs?”
“Turtles,” Raphael said through gritted teeth. “It’s The Turtle Café. You may have noticed the sign.”
“You know, Charlotte likes to hang out in the kids’ section downstairs,” Mike said. “You might find her there.”
“I’m not chasing after her,” the woman snipped. “Page her and tell her to come here.”
“We’re on our break,” Mike said. “I’ll page her in fifteen minutes when I go back to work.”
Behind the counter, Charlie put her hand over her mouth to keep from laughing. “Go Mikey!” she thought.
Charlie’s mother’s mouth gaped open like a fish. “How dare you speak to me like that! I’ll have you fired!”
“I wouldn’t hold my breath on that one,” Raphael growled, as the woman turned on her heel and left.
“O-M-F-G,” Mike said slowly, after the elevator doors swished closed.
“I told you so,” Charlie sighed.
Raphael reached down and slid his hands under her arms to stand her up. “We have to warn Donnie,” he said. “Too bad Splinter isn’t here.”
Mike grunted in agreement and pulled out his shell cell to text his brother. He snickered as he wrote: MAYDAY! MAYDAY! Incoming mother-in-law! Run for your life!
“I wouldn’t inflict THAT on Splinter,” Charlie said defiantly. “Hasn’t he suffered enough?” She sighed. “I have to go and defend my man, don’t I?”
“I’m sure he’d appreciate it,” Raphael agreed. “We’ll come with you.”
The elevator doors dinged again and an old lady stepped out.
“Hi, Mrs. Norton,” Raphael said, gently. “We have something to take care of, but we’ll be right back.”
“Is everything alright, dear?” the old lady said.
“Yeah, Mrs. Norton,” Raphael said. “We’re just a posse for a mother-in-law showdown.” He stepped into the elevator with the others. “I’ll be right back, okay?”
“Don’t worry, dear,” she said. “I have my book to read while I wait.” She squinted at the trio. “Draw the line early and never let the old bag cross it. Once I did that, my mother-in-law stopped giving me crap.” The doors swished shut and the turtles snickered.
“I didn’t know that Mrs. Norton knew any bad words,” Mike said.
“Oh she does,” Raph laughed.
“Can you guys do some kind of ninja magic and dump her corpse in the harbour?” Charlie sighed.
“We’re not the mob, babe,” Raphael said, “but we’ll back you up no matter what, okay?”
The doors opened and they could hear Charlie’s mother screeching.
“Does she have to be so dramatic?” Charlie mumbled.
“You’re Donatello?” the woman squawked.
“Yes,” the big turtle said. “You must be Charlotte’s mother.”
“You’re a bit tall for an oriental, aren’t you?” the woman said.
Mike grabbed Charlie as her knees buckled in shock. “Nevermind,” he whispered. “You can’t change her. Let’s just concentrate on getting her out of here.” Charlie nodded feebly.
“Yup,” Donatello said. He folded his arms and looked down at the woman, waiting for her to speak.
“What’s your last name?” the woman asked.
“Hamato,” Don said. They stared each other down as the silence stretched on.
“Take that stupid mask off so I can see you,” she demanded.
“Not during work hours,” Don said. There was more silence.
“Are you really dating my daughter?”
“Yup,” Don said.
The woman narrowed her eyes. “How close have you become?”
Donatello sighed and rubbed the bridge of his nose. “We’ve beCOME close enough to knock her up,” he said.
“Zing!” Mike whispered as the woman’s mouth fell open in shock. He and Raphael were holding Charlie completely up. Raph even had his hand over her mouth to keep her from revealing their hiding place behind the shelves.
“Pregnant?!” the woman wheezed. “but I’m not old enough to be a grandmother!” A crowd of customers was gathering around the famous author and Donatello. Some of them were regulars and knew that the sweet store owner and the turtle from the non-fiction floor were an item. “Why wasn’t I informed? She can’t just cut me out of her life like that!”
“Well I guess that’s up to you,” Donatello said. “It’s one thing for you to insult me when I’m just her lowly boyfriend, but we’re getting married and having a baby and I’m not going to let anyone talk down to me in front of my new family. I’m also not going to let you treat my wife so badly that she cries and runs when she sees you coming. Charlotte’s your only child and you’re only going to get grandkids through me, so if you ever want to see them, then you’d better sweeten the hell up, because you are not going to talk to my daughter like you talk to yours.”
“W-what?” the woman stammered.
Donatello folded his big arms again. “Oh, and your grandchild is going to be half Japanese whether you like it or not so it would really be in your interest to drop the racial slurs.” Out of the corner of his eye, he could see Leonardo standing off to the side with his arms folded as well. He was glaring at Charlie’s mother and he looked pretty pissed.
The crowd was murmuring and frowning at the author. They’d all had run-ins with their mother-in-laws and felt for Donatello. He and the owner seemed like a sweet couple and this deranged woman had no place talking to them like that. They could also see Charlie and the two guys from the café hiding behind a shelf and the customers were starting to get ticked off that a pregnant woman was being upset like Charlie was.
Charlie decided to end the confrontation before she lost her customers and she stepped out from behind the bookcase, still clinging to Raphael and Mike. Her mother’s eyes went from Charlie’s swollen belly to her engagement ring, then to Donatello. She rounded on her daughter. “How dare you let this person speak to me like that! I’m your mother! I care about you and you’re letting these Disneyland rejects treat me like I’m a bad person in front of my fans!”
A fat tear ran down Charlie’s face - she couldn’t help it. Why couldn’t her mother just be happy for her? She opened her mouth to speak, but Donatello stepped between her and her mother, blocking their view of each other with his large frame.
“No,” he said to Charlie’s mother.
“What do you mean no?” the woman snapped.
“I mean, no, you’re not going to speak to my pregnant fiancee like that. You need to leave before I call the cops.”
“You wouldn’t dare!” the woman spat.
Don leaned in close to her face and his face took on that angry look that he hadn’t used since the last time he’d killed a mutant foot soldier. “Try me,” he said in a dangerous voice.
Charlie’s mother hesitated for a moment, then turned on her heel and marched out of the store. The crowd cheered and clapped as she went out, red-faced. The turtles looked at each other and then to Charlie.
“Yay!” she cheered and clapped her hands. The crowd cheered again as she kissed Don’s “mask” and then she went back to her office, humming, “Ding dong, the witch is dead.”
