Chapter 23
“Yes, yes, I'm coming,” Betty sighed as she tried to rise from where she was reclined on her couch. She headed for her door, and promptly opened it.
Jason Blossom stood there, grinning. He held up a plastic bag. “Fancy Thai food?”
“Are you really giving me a choice?” She asked.
He glanced at the bag of food. “I could throw it away if you want...” he trailed off.
She rolled her eyes. “Just get in here,” He crossed the threshold into her house, then laid the bag on the table. He pulled out a chair for her to sit in, before adjusting it so that she was seated comfortably at the table. He then went to her kitchen and retrieved some cutlery and plates, having memorized where everything was in his previous visits.
He dished food out of the containers and placed a plate of it in front of her. She sniffed it appreciatively.
“It smells wonderful,” she commented.
“That it does. I got it at that corner shop, down the street. There's a lovely Asian lady, whom when I asked for food suitable for pregnant women, she said proudly that everything on her menu was suitable,”
Betty laughed. Jason went on to tell her of his whole encounter with the Asian lady. Betty loved listening to Jason. He talked a lot, which suited her just fine.
She thought of how he'd done the same on the car ride back to Los Angeles. He'd talked almost non-stop, making jokes and comforting her, while never once bringing up or even inquiring as to what had happened to make her leave Lake Mahoe just like that. Even when she'd broken down, sobbing her heart out, all he'd done was grip her hand with his free one and told her the story about how he'd messed up his first contract signing.
It had been a week, and since then he'd visited her every day, usually bringing food with him. His presence soothed her, kept her mind off the betrayal of Archie and Ron, as well as off what she had done with Reggie, how she had used her own body in that manner – even while sharing it with her child. It was shameful, what she had done. And she didn't know where it had come from.
But Jason chased away the shame, the regret, the hurt. He was entertaining, and she had to admit – she was more than a little flattered by how much he liked her.
“Don't you have work to do?” She'd asked him the first day he'd visited.
“I'm still on break,”
“Oh,” She frowned. “Sorry about that. You can get back to Lake Mahoe, you know?”
He shook his head with a smile. “There's nowhere I'd rather be than here,” He'd said in reply.
They ate quickly, vocalizing their admiration of the chef who had prepared the Thai meal. “Guess I have to go back there,” Jason commented.
“I guess so,” was all Betty said in reply. Afterward, they sat on the couch in front of the Television, sipping hot drinks. Tea for her, coffee for him.
“Let's watch a DVD,” He recommended.
“Do you mind if we watch the news first?” She asked, clicking a button on the remote. “I want to know what the weather'll be like tomorrow,”
“You can just look it up. Come on, let's watch something else,” he made a grab for the remote.
“Jason!” She couldn't help her giggle at his playful swipe. “It'll be quick, I just want t-”
“And on another note, the superstar Reginald Mantle has made an official media apology to his Elizabeth Cooper, who he apparently impregnated on some kind of saucy friends with benefits agreement,” The woman announced.
Betty watched as they displayed images of her in all her pregnant glory, distended stomach and all. Jason went very, very silent.
The video then moved to one of Reggie sitting in front of a camera in a dark room. “Betty, I want you to know how sorry I am. And this is probably the only way I can apologize to you, since you've been hiding out. I said a lot of horrible things to you, and I'm sorry. I didn't want this baby at first but now I can see how much it means to you... and I want to make things up to you. Please let me. I know we're not really a couple. And I know you don't really like me and honestly I don't know how I feel about you. But since we've made this baby... let's see this to the end,”
The remote fell onto the floor, falling out of her loose grip. The sound of it smacking into the mattress seemed to wake Betty up from the trance she had been in. She bent down to get it, then turned off the Television.
“...Did you know about this?” she asked Jason.
“...Yeah,” he admitted. “It's been all over the news. Even on magazines. He'd uploaded it on some media-sharing site. It's gotten millions of views,”
She was silent and she could feel Jason squirming uncomfortably beside her. She sighed. “Great. Now all my dirty details are exposed on the internet. Wonderful,” She ran a hand through her hair. Did Reggie really think she would forgive him for this? What would people think of her? Would anyone still want to watch her show, after knowing that she was some kind of whore?
It was like he'd taken her dirty underwear and flaunted it to everyone in the whole wide world. Nobody would think badly of Reggie of course. Being promiscuous was never looked down on in guys. But for her...
“Yeah. That asshole,” was all Jason could say, his face dark and his jaw set. He looked like he wanted to punch someone.
“What are you still doing here, Jason? After hearing all that, how can you possibly still want to be around me?”
Jason blinked at her, his rage vanishing from his face. “Is there a reason why I shouldn't want to be around you?”
She stared at him in wonder. “Reggie and I weren't a couple, you know. We were kind of … using each other,” She smiled, a sort of ironic one that hurt her face. “And this happened,” she gestured to her stomach. “I couldn't control my urges. I'm such a-”
“Don't say it,” The warning in his tone made her stop. She looked at him, fearing what she would see. “There's nothing wrong with you, Betty. Everyone makes mistakes. And the fact that you and Reggie aren't a couple is actually in my favor,” He smiled at her, making her heart melt.
It was at that moment, she decided she couldn't keep anything from him. Not from Jason, who'd been treating her so wonderfully. “I need to tell you something,”
He looked at her attentively, his expression schooled, neutral. She spoke, and told him everything. About her massive crush on Archie, about Reggie's on Veronica, how they had used each other to distract themselves from the heartbreak. How she had gotten pregnant and what Reggie had said. She even told him about what happened at the holiday home, leaving out the part that she'd slept with Reggie of course.
“Did you love him?” was what Jason said in the end.
“Archie? Yeah, I did,”
He shook his head. “No. I mean Reggie,”
She stared at him in silence. He never looked away. “...I might have,”
He smiled to himself and she thought about how it was the saddest looking smile he'd ever seen.
“...You see, Jason? I can't have another relationship. I just can't. It's like I'm fated not to have a love life,” She almost laughed at her own words, but the truth of it hit her too hard for her to find the humor in it.
“That's not true. You managed to fall in love with Reggie, even despite your heartbreak from Archie. That means I have hope, doesn't it?”
“Jason...” He held a finger to her lips, then leaned forward and kissed her. A short, soft peck.
“There's no rush,” he said when he pulled back. “Let's take our time. I'm okay with starting as friends,”
She sighed. “We might not ever be anything more than that, you know that right?” She said, placing her hand on his. “I don't want to hurt you. It'd be better if we just stayed acquaintances, then you wouldn't get your hopes up,”
“Too late,” He said with a confident grin. “But like I said, I'm fine with us taking it slow. Right now, I just want to be by your side,”
How could she say no?
Reggie tossed his phone onto the couch angrily, then collapsed into it and put his head in his hands. He'd called Betty non-stop as soon as the video had been uploaded, thinking that maybe she'd answer. But her phone had been turned off. He worried that he hadn't seen his worldwide apology.
He knew he was causing this huge craze and willingly giving away private information, but none of that mattered as long as his apology could reach Betty.
The magazine in front of him caught his eye, open to the page where photos of Betty had been published, with her pregnant midriff. Arrows had been drawn pointing to it, as if it wasn't obvious enough. He ran a finger across the page, stroking the picture.
How could he have been so stupid?
He'd lost her. Totally and completely lost her through his thoughtless actions. A woman who had been willing to stay with him despite everything. Despite the fact that he'd loved another, the fact that he'd raped her to take his pain out on someone, the fact that he'd gotten her pregnant. To the last moment, she'd been with him, supporting him, until he'd been an ass and told her to sacrifice the child.
He should have known his Blondie better than that. She would never sacrifice another life. Never.
And he should have known himself better. That last stunt he'd pulled... he did it to try to convince himself that he still loved Ron. That he wasn't falling for Betty. But in fact, he might have been.
The thoughts flitted across his mind, some of them making him panic.
It doesn't matter if I love her. She's pregnant with my baby, and I'm at fault.
But how could he make her forgive him?
His cell buzzed and immediately he retrieved it from between the cushions where it had dropped. He lost interest in the phone almost instantly, when he read the caller ID. Still, he might as well answer it. If only to tell him to piss off.
“Chris. Why are you calling me?” He couldn't help his hostility. “I told you I'm not taking on any jobs for a while,” Not until I get Betty back.
“Just wanted to let you know that the Board Awards are soon. And you've been nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role, of course,” Chris answered coolly, as to be expected of the agent that had helped him soar to fame. “And Best Picture, Outstanding Live Personality, Best Kiss...”
“Whatever,” Reggie said, wanting the conversation to end as soon as possible, in case Betty was calling him and the line was busy.
“You need to go,”
“Need is a relative term. Is that all?” Reggie poised his finger on the end button.
“She's going,”
He perked up. “She? You mean-”
“Elizabeth Cooper. She's gotten nominated for Outstanding Home Instructional Show,”
“And she's going to be there? You sure?” Reggie said, leaning forward as hope rose within him.
“Pretty sure. I'm personally acquainted with her agent. She's going to be there apparently, a surprising move since she hasn't been seen in public much since her pregnancy. She is bringing a plus one, though, so maybe it's to show him off,” Chris mused.
Reggie couldn't answer. Finally, he managed. “What?”
“I said she's going,”
“With a plus one,” He added.
“Yes, that's what I said,”
“Who the hell is it?”
“From what I hear, someone from your hometown. Someone somewhat wealthy,”
Reggie frowned. It couldn't be Archie... could it? No, he had just seen them the day before. He and Carrot-top were as close as ever. And if they were going as friends, Archie would have called and told him. They wanted Betty and Reggie to reunite, after all. “Don't beat around the bush, Chris. Who is it?”
“His name is Jason Blossom, if I remember correctly,”
For the second time, Reggie went: “What?”
“What now?” Chris sighed, apparently quite tired of his client's antics.
“Nothing. Just tell me if her plans change,” Reggie said. “I'll talk to you later. Bye,” Without even waiting for his agent to bid him farewell, he ended the call.
Then he leaned back onto the couch and thought of how Betty could possibly be dating Jason. And what that meant for her pregnancy.
No child of mine is going to be raised as a Blossom!
His mind cluttered with thoughts, he hurriedly went to his study to retrieve a paper and pen.
“Are you sure you don't mind going with me?” Betty asked for the last time, the day before the awards, as Jason stood by her front door, ready to leave.
“Of course not,” Jason said. “I'm really honored to be taking you.”
Betty was silent for a moment as Jason slipped on his shoes, seeing as how she had a no-shoes policy in her home, the carpet of which was lush and cost a small fortune. “Reggie might be there,” She said quietly. Trent had warned her as much. But this was the first time she'd ever been nominated for an award. She wanted to be there.
Besides, Reggie had won loads. He'd probably not want to show up for the Board Awards since he'd been to so many.
She hoped so anyway.
“All the more reason for me to be there,” Jason said with a boyish grin. He leaned forward and kissed her cheek – a simple, chaste touch. He was such a gentleman. He was all heedful of her discomfort. “Bye Graham,” He said, pressing his palm gently against her, his eyes shining with love for her unborn child.
Jason was convinced she was pregnant with a boy. She was still on the fence. It didn't matter to her what gender her baby was. Still, Jason had gotten really attached to her baby, and he'd made more than one hint about how he'd be alright with raising the baby as his.
“Thank you Jason. I don't know what I'd do without you,” She said.
His smile widened. He leaned forward and pecked her on the lips then. “I'll see you tomorrow, Blondie,”
She blinked at him, and he took her surprise as a compliment. He left without another word, and she shut the door in an almost automatic manner.
Blondie. Why did it feel wrong for Jason to call her Blondie? Reggie called her that all the time. Yet something about the fact that it had come from Jason's mouth made her body want to scream out in unease. It was wrong. It was wrong for anyone other than Reggie to call her Blondie.
She leaned against the door, the back of her head pressed against it as she looked to her ceiling for answers. Jason was great. He really was. She knew she didn't deserve him, and she'd told him that many times, but he never listened.
But he wasn't Reggie.
Tears came to her eyes, and she dashed them away. Was she going to be like this all her life? Constantly pining after the men she couldn't have?
No! She scolded herself. She needed to give Jason more of a chance. She pushed off from the door, determined to bury her feelings for Reggie deep down.
“We don't need him,” She said to her swollen middle, unsure whether she was telling her baby or herself. “He doesn't need us. So we don't need him,” She declared.
Even though she knew that if Jason called her Blondie once more, she'd crumble into a million pieces.
