Betty, you should have seen them together. I felt bad having to take her away. The Mantles really love her, you know. All of the Mantles.”
“Chick, I don’t care, I don’t think it’ll be a good idea for her to go there any longer. I want to keep her away from them before she learns to love them. Reggie will have children with Ronnie, then where will Angel be? She’ll be hurt by her grandparents’ rejection. So I’ve decided there shouldn’t be any more contact with them. I’ll tell her father’s dead or something. I don’t want her to be hurt by him the way I was.”
And you’re still hurting, Sissy. Chick hated seeing Betty this way. He knew her daughter was the only thing keeping her sane. “Betty, she needs her father, as well as her grandparents. Why are you doing this?”
“Whose side are you on, anyway? Why can’t you understand where I’m coming from? He loves Veronica not me! ” At her outburst, Chick relented.
“Okay, okay. No more contact with her father and grandparents. She’ll hate you when she finds out that you lied to her, Sissy.” Chick tried to reason with her, but she would not budge on this.
“That’s the chance I’ll have to take, Chick. I don’t want her hurt by these people. The Lodges are very powerful. They could ruin her life like they’ve ruined mine. I’m going to put her to bed. Oh, and there’s to be no more contact with Reggie, Chick. That’s an order.” She stared at him until he nodded his agreement. He handed her the baby sheepishly.
That signaled the end of their conversation. Betty kissed her baby when she came into her arms and took her to her room to put her down for her nap.
“You know Mommy loves you, don’t you my darling? Please don’t hate me for what I must do.” Betty hugged and tickled her daughter until the baby laughed and gurgled back at her. Betty called her sister and made arrangements to leave the area. It was too close to Reggie for comfort. They would not be able to share their child after all.

Mr. Lodge had welcomed Reggie back with open arms. Reggie was given an even larger office than he had before. He whistled as he looked around the huge room. The mammoth cherry mahogany desk was exquisite with the leather bound chair that was fit for a king. There was a huge fish tank and water fountain. There was even a small bedroom suite off the side. Only Mr. Lodge and the chosen few that Reggie chose to bring there would know of its existence.
“Reggie my boy, I hope bygones will be bygones. We have all forgiven you. Now that that ugly business is behind us, we can start over. We’re family again.”
“Sure Mr. Lodge. We’re family. I’m still waiting for the divorce papers, you know. But, I’m glad to be back.” Reggie stifled a flinch as Lodge hugged him.
“Let’s meet for lunch so we can catch up on what’s been going on since I’ve been gone, Mr. Lodge.” Reggie gave Mr. Lodge a quick squeeze and backed away, pretending to busy himself with papers on his desk.
Reggie’s new title was Executive Vice President of Mergers and Acquisitions and he became more ruthless than ever. He would talk down the owners into almost giving their companies away, all in the name of Lodge Corporation. Reggie made it his business to know everyone’s job description and what contracts they held. He wanted to know all the tactics they used to get new contracts and businesses for them to acquire.
“Reggie, you’re the best there is when it comes to business.” Lodge told him as he was cackling with happiness that his wonder boy was back, and would finally be his son-in-law. Reggie knew how much money he brought into Lodge’s company, and knew that was why he schemed to get him back with the company. Mr. Lodge knew about the visit Reggie had with Angel and was glad Betty stopped the visits before he had to. Lodge wanted Reggie to have no more contact with Betty and the baby.
Reggie needs to concentrate on the business and my daughter. Lodge couldn’t wait for Reggie to become part of his family and give him grandchildren. Lodge felt justified in doing whatever he thought would keep Reggie happy and loyal to his daughter. He gave Reggie an expensive company car and a Rolex watch to say ‘thanks’, twenty percent stock in the company, to become a fifty per cent share holder when he married Veronica.
Reggie was a very good actor, and he should have won an academy award for his performance. He had a broken heart, but would not let anyone know. He realized now that he did not love and would never forgive her for driving Betty and his baby away from him.
He secretly tried to find them, calling Polly, who conveniently changed her phone number, which caused Reggie to throw a full-fledged tantrum in his office’s private bathroom. It was well that his executive office was soundproof, because his secretary would have called the police to arrest him as a lunatic.

Reggie also kept a well-stocked bar and had a flask in his pocket at all times. Lodge discreetly ignored the tell-tale signs of Reggie’s daily hangovers. He also saw the intimate caresses between Reggie and his secretary Barbara when they thought no one was looking. Lodge would not comment if Reggie had other women.
A small price to pay to have him back. All men in our world cheat. So what? As long as Reggie was back in the fold, he could do no wrong in Lodge’s eyes. His baby was happy again and she would be married to the man she loved very soon.
“Oh it’s so good to be me” Lodge gloated to himself, as he got into his limo to, chuckling all of the way home.
