I crouched beside the road, waiting for Ed to give me the all clear to run in.
“Lili, I don’t want to freak you out, but there was just an explosion in the medium security wing.” He said, his voice coming through my earpiece. “It’s not near the maximum wing, but there’s likely to be a bit of chaos. It will make it easier to get in though. The gate’s open now, you can go.”
“Is Roman still in his cell?” I asked, running in. I ducked behind a car as some guards ran past, trying not to be seen.
“Seems to be, so far. I’ll let you know if that changes.”
I still had the path inside memorised, but as I crept towards the door, I was suddenly grabbed from behind. Thrown to the ground, I somehow managed to get my gun out and shoot it at my attacker. The bullet hit him in the foot, spraying blood across the concrete.
As he went down, crying out in pain, I picked myself up. He was just a guard, someone I’d never seen before, but I wasn’t sticking around to see if he was alright. I hit him with the butt of my gun, knocking him out.
I unhooked his ID card from his belt and used it to get in the side door. Following the path in my head, I took each corner slower than I usually would, checking for danger before stepping out.
“Just hang on a sec.” Ed said, stopping me in my tracks. “Something… something isn’t right here.”
“What is it?” I asked, feeling the anxiety rising again.
“A glitch in the video… no… no, no, no. Lili, someone put a recording on the feed. I fixed it, and Roman isn’t in his cell. I don’t know where he is. You need to get out.”
Before I could reply, I felt something sharp press against my throat. My blood ran cold when I heard a familiar voice.
“Throw the gun away, and turn around.”
I did as I was told, turning to face the reason I was even here in the first place. His dark eyes were cold, and they made me more scared than I expected.
“Liliana, it’s been a long time. You look more beautiful every time I see you.” He grabbed me by the arm, throwing me up against the wall. “Are you here for me?”
I didn’t reply, just kept my eyes on the knife.
“It doesn’t really matter anyway. You’re going to get me out of here, or I’m going to kill you.”
I nodded, leading him out. It was hard to keep my cool with a knife pressed into my back, but I stayed as calm as I could.
“Lili.” I heard Jon’s voice in my ear. “Take a breath. Get him out to the car, and drug him there. You’re going to be fine. We can see you on the cameras, we’re keeping an eye on you, I promise.”
I looked up at the camera as we passed, taking deep breaths to get myself back under control. Just needed to keep my cool for a little bit longer. We were out in the carpark, and it wasn’t far until the gate and my car.
“Where’s the car?” Roman asked.
“It’s… it’s out past the gate.” I whispered. I was honestly hoping that a guard would see us, but they were all distracted by the medium wing, and none were even looking our way.
We finally made it to the car, and he grabbed my arm again, turning me to face him. He pressed me up against the side of the car, the knife digging into my stomach.
“Keys. Now.”
I did as I was told, pulling them out of my pocket. He took them, and I took my chance, pulling the needle out with my other hand and stabbing him in the neck with it. The knife sank into my skin, and I shoved him backwards before it got too deep. I could feel the blood beginning to flow down my skin, but there was no pain because I was so high on adrenaline.
Somehow, I managed to pull him into back seat of the car. I had an hour before the drug would wear off, and the drive back would take about forty minutes, but I was bleeding, albeit slowly, and I didn’t know how I would do focusing for that long.
“Lili, are you alright?” Jon asked. “We can’t see you anymore, did you get out?”
“I’m fine.” I groaned, starting to drive. “I’ll be home soon.”
He waited impatiently by the door, wanting to know exactly where she is, but not wanting to distract her. All he knew was that she’d sounded like she was in pain, and he couldn’t get the thought that something bad had happened out of his head.
Miss me? Scarecrow asked.
“Hardly.” He replied with a sigh. “This is really not the time.”
You called me back. You know I turn up when you’re scared, don’t blame this on me.
“That fifteen hours where you were quiet was so nice. Can we go back to that for a little while longer?”
The sound of a car screeching to a halt outside hit his ears, and he called for Ed to come out with him.
I opened the car door, pissed off about how the night had gone. Jon was walking over, but I pushed past him to get to Ed.
“What the hell happened, Ed?” I asked, storming over.
“Joker happened.” He continued over to the car. “I’m sorry, I should have realised there was an issue with the feed.”
“No, it’s alright. I’m not… not angry at you.” I suddenly felt really dizzy, and my legs just seemed to crumple underneath me.
Before I fell, Jon suddenly whipped an arm around my waist and caught me. His hand brushed my side, and I guess he must have felt the blood, because he suddenly looked up at me, concerned.
“Lili, what happened?” He asked.
“He… he stabbed me.”
He picked me up, carrying me inside. I rested my head against him, trying to stay conscious. The pain was hitting, and I was exhausted.
He carried me into the bedroom, gently placing me down on the bed. He walked into the bathroom, returning with the medical kit. Sitting on the bed, he ripped my shirt open to check the damage.
“Jon…” I whispered, feeling my body beginning to shake.
“Shh, don’t talk.” He squeezed my hand. “I’m going to give you something for the pain, but you’re still bleeding, so I don’t have time to wait for it to start working. I’m sorry, but it’s going to hurt.”
I felt something pierce my skin, near the wound. It didn’t hurt too much, but then he started stitching me up. In my half conscious, out of adrenaline, state, it felt like worse pain than I’d ever experienced. I closed my eyes, scared I was going to bite a hole through my lip, as tears began to roll down my cheeks.
I thought the drug would never kick in, that the hot searing pain would never go away. Then a numb sensation began to spread over the wound. I could still feel the pull as he stitched, but it didn’t really hurt.
“You didn’t lose too much blood, and the knife didn’t hit anything important.” He taped a bandage to my skin, and cleaned up the rest of the blood. “You’re going to be fine. You just need to rest. Do you want me to help you change?”
I nodded, carefully standing up. I was still feeling a little unsteady, but he held me upright.
“Are you sure you’re alright to stand?”
“I’m fine, just a little dizzy.” I held onto his shirt for balance.
He helped me change into clothes that weren’t covered in blood, then made sure I was comfortable in bed.
“Will you stay until I fall asleep?” I asked, reaching for his hand. I was still shaking a little, and I didn’t know how to stop it.
He lay down on his side in front of me, gently brushing the tears from my cheeks. “I’m not going anywhere.”
I shivered, cuddling up to him. “I’m cold.”
“You’re still in shock.” He pulled the blanket up over me. “Just go to sleep, you’ll feel better when you wake up.”
I caught his hand in mine, holding it to my chest as I closed my eyes. The pain was gone, at least for now, and I just wanted to sleep for hours.
“Lili…” He pressed a kiss to my forehead.
“Mmm?”
“I love you.”
I opened my eyes, caught completely off-guard. I guess I thought it would take a lot longer before he said it, if he said it at all. He must have been so worried about me. “You do?”
He nodded, gently pulling his hand away from mine. He took hold of my chin, tilting my head slightly so that he could kiss me. “I do. I think I have for a while now, but I didn’t know it.”
“I love you too.” I whispered, half asleep already. “Wake me when Roman’s conscious.”
He held her close in his arms, feeling the need to protect her from everything now. He wasn’t tired, but he was going to stay there with her until she woke up. There was no way he could let her go until he was sure she was going to be alright.
I can’t believe you actually told her. Sometimes you still surprise me.
“I wasn’t planning on keeping it from her forever.” He replied quietly. He was fairly sure that she was so out she wouldn’t even stir, but he still wanted to be careful not to rouse her. “I won’t lie to her anymore.”
Are you going to tell her that I’m back?
“When she’s awake, I will.” He softly ran his fingers down her arm. “I just want to make sure she wakes properly and that nothing has gone wrong.”
