The clothing line of Hott Muggs, Inc. continued its rise to the top of the fashion word. The demand for their fashions was so high; it was way out of Ethel and Betty’s league. Reggie and Jughead helped them with their expansion. They commissioned a human resource company to help hire the experienced staff they needed to help with the massive clothing orders, acquired a larger studio/warehouse and hired a real estate agent to handle that. They also looked at the local design schools and offered free internships and scholarships for assistance. There were long waiting lists for the internships and they were flooded with applications for scholarships. Thanks to Reggie’s public relations and the sexy pictures of him and Betty, Hot Muggs was soon on the Fortune 500’s list. Reggie Mantle and the Midas touch were at work again: their clothing sold` by the thousands.
“Bella, I can’t keep them on the shelves long enough to pick out a few things for my mistresses,” the Count would say: he was another notorious playboy and had many women whom he liked to see well-dressed at all times.
0-0-0 Reggie’s business phone was ringing off the hook because so many modeling agencies wanted to advertise their clothes and/or wanted him and ‘Ann’ to model for them, remembering how phenomenal they looked together during the Halloween show. Betty never thought of modeling before and was terrified of being in the spotlight and on display. However, at Ethel’s urging she agreed to try it.“But isn’t twenty-eight, well, actually almost twenty-nine, too old to start being a model, Ethel? I’m ancient.” Betty asked.
“Hey Betty, it’s just for the exposure. You look eighteen. We’ll keep your age a secret for a while at least, like I do. I’m always going to be twenty-one.” Ethel thought the idea of Betty and Reggie modeling together was a great idea. It would keep throwing them together in intimate situations.
“Besides, our clothing line needs the hype, girl. We can retire young, get married, and have many babies. Our hook will be, ‘Hott Muggs makes you look ten years younger!’ What a great sales pitch!” Ethel and Jughead were jumping up and down, hugging and kissing each other with excitement. They noticed that Betty did not comment on the remarrying and having children part of Ethel’s plan.
Betty decided she was not getting married again because being Archie’s wife for almost ten years was more than enough for her. She would let her friends have that dream of family and children while she would be content with her new life: Fashion Designer/Model, single career woman.
Later that evening, Betty was busy putting articles and photos into Reggie’s scrapbook, when she received a call from Howard Feldman, her lawyer.
“Betty we have a big problem. Our ploy in posting the petition in Stillwater, Texas newspapers was foiled. Archie got wind of it somehow and sent his refusal. He’s determined to contest this divorce. He really wants to stay married. You’re going to have to go to court to fight for the divorce, but don’t worry. I’ll get evidence on him for something.” Howard was the best divorce lawyer on the east coast and if his client wanted a divorce, he got it for them. He never failed a client to date.
“I don’t care how much it’ll cost. Let’s do this. I want out as soon as possible. Maybe I can help you find something on him.”
“Don’t worry Betty. It’s been taken care of. I’ll get a court date in two months’ time or less if possible.” Ethel told him to do whatever it took to help her friend get her freedom-she would pay for it. She feared Betty was going to have to battle hard for her freedom.
To further complicate matters, while all of this was going on, Reggie began his campaign to win Betty’s love. He started by sending her expensive gifts: perfumes, flowers, cards, jewelry, and etcetera: Betty sent them all back.
Reggie remembered how much Betty loved dolls, and sent her a beautiful porcelain mother and baby set, which she promptly returned. Betty did hesitate when he sent her a cute little Yorkie puppy, though. But she sent it back. Reggie decided to keep the puppy for when Betty started speaking to him again. He named the puppy, Pixie. He had no doubt Betty would eventually forgive him because no woman had ever been able to resist his charms before. Reggie and Pixie would wait for Betty together.
Betty constantly ran into Reggie on the street while he was walking Pixie: to the amusement of the passersby that saw him. Betty tried to ignore him, though it was hard to keep from laughing at the sight of him trying to coax the tiny dog to walk while it cried, obviously wanting him to carry her instead. Betty didn’t know it was no coincidence that she began to see Reggie Mantle everywhere she went.
0-0-0 When they were at the first photo shoot together, Betty refused to be in the same room or work with Reggie directly.“Why do I have to pose with him? I don’t want to be anywhere near him. Get someone else!” she demanded to the Player’s magazine’s lead photographer, Peter Magnum, who gave Reggie an exasperated look. Reggie and Jughead just stood there watching her with amusement, which further irritated her. But Ethel would not allow that. She pulled Betty to the side, out of earshot.
“Betty, if you want us to succeed in this business, you have to sometimes model and work with people you dislike and they dislike you,” Ethel whispered to her. Betty rolled her eyes at Ethel as she spoke.
“Ethel…this was not part of the deal. Why does he have to be here? I hate his ass!” The fact that she caught a smirk from Reggie didn’t help.
“Come on Betty, you don’t really, hate Reggie, do you? He’s really helped launch our designs in a very tough business. He’s never taken money from us, though I keep sending him monthly checks for his services. He’s sent the checks back to me with a note telling me to invest the money. And this was even before he knew you were here.”
“I didn’t know that. Well, no, I guess, I don’t actually hate him. I just hate what he’s become. He makes me angry all the time, for some reason.” One reason was that as Ethel was speaking to her, she noted that Reggie was still smiling at her, which caused her to have butterflies in her stomach. She found it hard to ignore him when he was so close to her.
“Look Betty, time for girl talk: under all the hype and ego, Reggie is really a great guy. You used to be the best of friends, and he really is the same old Reggie, despite his fame and fortune. Also by snubbing him, you’ll make him less determined to be with you because he’s not used to being ignored. His ego won’t let him keep pursuing you. So do the photo shoots with him and let him see that you’re not interested in him. What do you say? That’ll make him leave you alone, if that’s what you want.”
Betty did not see that Ethel had crossed her fingers behind her back while she spoke. But Jughead and Reggie did. They both had to struggle to keep from laughing out loud. Jughead knew that Ethel did that when she lied, which was rare. Ethel wanted Reggie and Betty together, so she lied to her best friend without a second thought. Ethel knew that Betty ignoring Reggie would only make him more determined to have her.
Plus Ethel knew he would not be scared away from her, not now. But Betty didn’t seem to be aware of that. She was not able to think straight right about now, so Ethel took advantage of it. Soon enough, Betty would see how much she loved and needed Reggie.
“I do want Reggie to leave me alone, E. Telling him to leave me alone is not working, so I guess I’ll just have to show him.” Betty looked unsure.
“Well, let him see you're not interested and his pride will make him go away. He's got enough women out there who want to be with him, and he’ll start dating them again.” Betty dropped her head so Ethel could not see the pain she felt at her statement. She raised her head up with a forced smile.
“I know that’s right. Okay E, if you think it’ll work, I’ll do it. I’ll ignore the Wolf.” Ethel felt a little pang at the hurt look Betty had on her face when she mentioned Reggie’s women.
“Don't worry Betty, it will all work out.” Ethel hugged her tight to emphasize her words. Betty sighed as she held Ethel even tighter, resigned to the fact that she had to work closely with Reggie.
Betty missed Reggie and Ethel’s exchange: a look of triumph when she began to get ready for the shoot. Betty and Ethel were silent during the hair and makeup sessions. Peter breathed a sigh of relief as he shouted instructions to his team.
The first photo sequence was for eveningwear. Reggie was going over the details of the shoot with his staff when he
stopped talking, his mouth falling open at the sight of Betty. She was dressed in a sexy purple mini dress and she looked breathtaking. The dress revealed glimpses of luscious breasts as she moved. She waved briefly at everyone in general as she entered the room, not glancing Reggie’s way and began laughing and joking with Ethel and the models: Frankie Hughes and Tyler Green that were there to pose with them. This caused Reggie and Jughead to glare at them all.
Reggie watched them with his fists clenched and ears turning red with anger. The photographer directed the four of them to be amorous and flirtatious during a night out on the town, so Betty placed her arm through Frankie’s and leaned on him. It was plain to see that Frankie was really getting into it as he put his face close to hers. He was enjoying the feel of her hands and body on his. Tyler began caressing Ethel’s bare back, and she caressed him right back. The photos were to show lovers having a grand night out on the town, turned on by each other’s outfits. There was sexy music and directions being shouted out by Peter. These sessions almost caused both male models to be beaten to death by Reggie and Jughead.
“Hey you two, watch your hands there! My friend here will kill you for fondling his fiancé!” Reggie tried not to reveal his jealousy, but it didn’t work. Betty knew he was jealous and began laughing wildly at the anger and narrowing of his green eyes as he watched her. The pictures she took were fantastic, showing their designs off to perfection.
The next session was for Reggie, Ethel, Tyler, and Betty to model sleepwear together. They had to hold each other, and then slowly make their way towards a bed. There were also photos taken of Ethel and Tyler, Ethel and Reggie, then Tyler and Betty. They took sizzling photos, and the staff was excited about how they were turning out.
Peter next had Betty lie on top of Reggie on a huge frilly bed, with both of them looking at the camera. Betty felt a big surprise when she lay on top of Reggie. Her eyes widened at the hardness she felt under her. She started gasping and trembling when Reggie put his arms around her. His green eyes were burning hot in his intense passion for her. Betty was drawn into his eyes, and there were several sizzling pictures of them staring at each other. When she faced the camera again, Reggie was smothering her face with hot kisses. Betty felt dizzy when that segment was over. The looks they both gave the camera caused a few of the people in the room to fan themselves.
“Whew! I have to call my husband to be ready when I get home. I need to ride him hard tonight,” one of the assistants called out, to the amusement of all who heard. That statement helped relieve the sexual tension somewhat that the two had caused in the studio.
The final session had Reggie modeling alone. He was wearing black gauzy pants set, which was part of the Hot Muggs casual beachwear collection. Betty, as the designer had to arrange the outfit on Reggie’s body in the best way to showcase the garment. Betty left the shirt open to expose his bare chest. She had a hard time catching her breath: her hands trembled as she draped the shirt away from his torso. Reggie was positioned squatting against a wall while barefoot. His muscular upper body was exposed to perfection. Many people in the studio were breathless at the sight of him. Betty was included in this reaction.
The blazing look the camera caught was because he had a raging hard-on as he posed while staring at Betty. His eyes were almost golden in his passion. That photo, plus the photos with Reggie and Betty in bed made the front pages of Star, People and Player Magazines, titled, The Wolf at Play.
Despite Betty taking so many photos and close contact with Reggie, she still snubbed him if the conversation was not related to business. She also declined Reggie’s requests to go out. If Betty answered the phone when he called, she would just call Ethel or Jughead when she heard his voice. Betty was still treating him as if he was an unwanted stranger.
“It seems as if your courtship isn’t going too well Reggie.” Ethel said when she came on the line, one evening several weeks after the photo shoot.
“I know, E. That’s why I need your help, bad. I really blew it on Halloween. Betty hates me. I can’t lose her again. Please tell me what to do.” Ethel knew how hard it was for Reggie to ask for help.
“Jughead and I will help you, Mantle. We owe you, and I know you two need each other. I love you both.” Reggie put a goofy tone in his voice “Oh gosh Ethel! Seriously, though, I feel the same about you and Jughead. Please don’t tell anyone, though. I can’t ruin my tough guy image. I’m already taking care of a Yorkie, for God’s sake!: Reggie laughed. “I’m not supposed to have any real feelings except for lust, remember? I’ll do whatever you say.” They were laughing to ease the emotional moment.
“Just the thing I like to hear. Come to dinner tonight, Reg. Let her see you are still the same old Reggie she used to know.”
“I’ll be there. I want to say, thanks again, E. for all of your help.” They set a time for dinner before Reggie hung up. Ethel looked worried. Jughead placed his arms around Ethel. “I hope Betty can forgive Reg, Jughead.”
“Ethel, you know how stubborn Betty is. Betty can’t forgive Reggie if she doesn’t talk to him. But Mantle is relentless when he wants something. He’ll win her over. Just
give it time. Dinner’s a great idea.” Jughead pulled Ethel closer to him. “Come here baby…” as he kissed her lips.
0-0-0
When Betty entered Ethel’s penthouse, that evening, she was stunned to see Reggie sitting on the sofa, engaged in animated conversation with Ethel and Jughead. And they were all surprised because Betty had Greg Harmon with her.Betty ran into Greg at Dela Rosa gourmet grocery store where she was shopping to make her friends one of her delicious meals. Betty had begged for Greg’s pardon because of the way she had acted on Halloween towards Reggie: Greg had quickly forgiven her. Greg helped her carry her groceries home, so Betty invited him to dinner and he eagerly agreed.
They both entered the penthouse, laughing at something Betty was saying, when Betty saw Reggie, turning her smile into a frown. She was obviously not happy to see him there, while Reggie was not happy to see Greg, and vice versa.
Reggie and Greg glared at each other while Betty’s blue eyes narrowed as she looked at Reggie. He was dressed to the nines; his black Armani suit was definitely made just for him, not a wrinkle in sight. The Clive Christian No. 1 cologne he wore was intoxicating. He slowly stood up when he saw her. Jughead and Ethel glance at each other, holding their collective breaths.
“Hi Betty, it’s nice to see you. I came over to spend some quality time with my friends.” He folded his arms and his signature smirk was in place.
There the Wolf stands, looking so smug and oh so gorgeous. God, how I hate him! Betty was becoming irate as she stood looking at his very handsome, smirking face.
“Oh I see. If this is a friend’s only occasion, it leaves me out. Change of plans, Greg. Let’s go out to eat, if you don’t mind.”
“Sure Betty. It’s fine with me.” Greg stuttered as he nervously tried to ignore Reggie’s deadly glare. He was struggling not to tremble in his shoes.
“Hi Babe, I’ve never apologized to you for my actions on Halloween. I was a major asshole and I’m sorry for my behavior. See, I admit I was a shit that night. “He shot her one of his irresistible smiles as he sat back down.
“Hey, don’t call me ‘babe’! So, now, you’re sorry. Excuse me; am I to fall all over you because the great one says he’s sorry? I’m not one of your groupies!” Reggie wisely refrained from making a comment to that statement. Betty had forgotten that she had acted like one of his groupies on Halloween. He didn’t want her to become angrier with him than she already was, and he really hated to leave. When she took Greg’s arm to leave Reggie jumped up again.
“Betty, wait! Don’t leave. I’ve been invited to dinner, but if you want, I’ll go. I don’t want you to leave on my account.” Reggie was looking at Betty sadly. “Yes, good idea, Mantle, leave!” Betty and Greg said this at the same time. Betty had actually stomped her foot when she bellowed out her response.
“I’m sure you have some lovely lady waiting for you somewhere and you really shouldn’t keep her waiting.” Betty added, getting more heated by the second. Actually, Reggie’s cell phone was ringing as they spoke. This just made Betty more irritated. Reggie ignored the phone, but he could see this was not going well.
“Yeah, very well then, I know when I’m not wanted. Bye, see you guys later.” Feeling desperate, Reggie decided he would fake an injury: he turned around and ‘tripped’ over his own feet, slipped on a Persian rug, and fell, narrowly missed hitting his head on the edge of a solid marble coffee table. He twisted his ankle hard as he fell. That was not supposed to happen in his hastily thought out plan.
“Oh, Christ!” Reggie yelled as a bone cracked in his ankle and he felt agonizing pain. His head hit the granite-tiled floor, stopping him from sliding any further across the shiny floor.
Reggie never had to pull stunts like that to get a girl’s attention before, but he felt no shame in what he had just done. He was only supposed to have a few bruises when he fell, but it felt as if he had done some serious damage: if the pain he felt was any indication. He knew it was a dirty trick, but it was so typically Reggie Mantle. He would do whatever it took to get Betty back in his life.
He knew Betty wouldn’t ignore him if he was hurt. He hid a satisfied smile as Jughead, Ethel and Betty screamed in horror at his mishap, running over to see about him. Greg just stood there, fists clenched in anger. Greg saw through Reggie even if Betty didn’t. What a jerk! He fell on purpose! Greg shook his head in disgust at Reggie’s actions.
“Reggie! Are you okay?” When Betty saw the look of agony on his face, despite herself, her heart melted and her anger was quickly forgotten. Reggie put on a brave face, while hopping to the sofa, and wincing in real pain from his head and ankle.
“Not really Betty. My ankle hurts like hell and I can’t wiggle my toes.” Jughead eased off Reggie’s expensive Berluti loafer and black silk sock; he could see Reggie’s ankle was swelling and turning a deep red color. Jughead had a concerned look on his face. “Reg, it doesn’t look good. Hopefully it’s just a sprain.”
This reminded them of their school days when Reggie had many such injuries as a sports hero back in High School. Jughead called for the limo as they all helped Reggie stand up. Betty suddenly remembered Greg. “Sorry Greg, we have to
take Reggie to the emergency room. He may have broken something.”
“Yeah, he broke our date,” Greg said, glaring at Reggie, “how convenient!”
“Groan!” Reggie put a wounded puppy dog look on his face, and because he looked so pitiful, it made Betty sweep his hair out of his eyes. His heart was beating fast at her sympathetic look, and the closeness of her. He bit back a gasp of pleasure at her touch. Betty sent Greg a warning frown at his words. Reggie sent him a smirk that she missed.
“Look, Greg. Reggie’s a very old friend of mine from way back. He needs my help. And I just met you. So chill out. I’ll call you. Maybe we can meet later.”
Betty missed Reggie shaking his head at her words, mouthing to Greg, ‘No she won’t be meeting you’. Then he gave Greg the finger. Greg saw it, as Reggie meant him to. Greg clenched his fists. He longed to knock that smirk off Mantle’s face, but didn’t dare. He knew Betty would never forgive him, and even in his injured state, Reggie could still beat his ass.
“See you later Greg.” Betty gave Greg a quick kiss on his cheek.
“Umph!” Reggie groaned as the three friends assisted him out to Ethel’s limo, with Greg taking up the rear, shaking his head in disgust. They forgot all about Greg as they loaded him in the car. In a few minutes they were pulling up in front of the emergency room at Mount Sinai Hospital.
“No one even asked me if I wanted to come!” Greg fumed as he got into a taxi. Mantle ‘s done it again! What does Betty see in him? But he knew the answer to that question. Everything! Greg knew he was no competition for the Wolf. He resigned himself for the last time that he and Betty would only be friends.
When they arrived at the hospital, Reggie was rushed into the triage room, and then sent for x-rays of his head and ankle. Reggie sustained a hairline fracture in his injured ankle and he had a concussion. He was to stay in the hospital for a few days for further tests and observation due to his head injury. The nurse had given him an injection for the pain.
“Great going, Reg!” Jughead said to him later. “You almost killed yourself for Betty. You really did it, man! I couldn’t have planned it better.”
“It was spur of the moment decision and I did a little more damage than I bargained for, Jughead.” Reggie said sheepishly.
Jughead was impressed at the lengths Reggie went through to get Betty by his side. Everyone knew Betty would never turn away from someone in need. The fact that Reggie had real injuries was priceless. Jughead whistled at the size of his room and the quantity of flowers, get-well balloons and cards arriving by the dozens filling up the room to capacity.
“Damn man, how do people know you’re here, already?” Jughead was amazed at how Reggie’s life was such an open book. They had been at the hospital for less than an hour and the room was filled to capacity with get well wishes. People were trying to peek in his room to get a look at him. Reggie, as usual, paid them no mind.
“You don’t know the half of it, Jughead. You see, I’ve dated quite a few of the nurses, doctors, and administrators who work here. Oh, and several reporters too. Man, you’d be surprised at the kind of people who come to my clubs. I’m sure word that I’m here has been leaked to the press by now.” Jughead roared with laughter at that. “Reggie, you’re just too much, man.”
“This was all worth it”, Reggie said, smugly. “At least Betty’s talking to me again. I know I have a lot to make up for. I need her to see how much I love her.”
“Well, here’s your chance, Mantle, to make it right. Do your thing.” They stopped talking when Betty and Ethel came into the room. Betty noticed how the hospital staff was fawning over Reggie, falling over themselves to be the one to care for him, and she found it very annoying.
“I came in to check on you before I leave, and I guess you’re in good hands. I’ll see you two later. I need to go home so I can dress for my date with Greg.” Betty waved goodbye and turned to leave.
“Please don’t go yet Betty! Can we talk?” Jughead nudged Ethel and they left the room unnoticed. “What’s there to talk about Reggie? You didn’t want my friendship in all of these years, so, why now?”
“Look Betty, please sit down. There’s a lot I need to tell you. Please! Just listen, before I lose my nerve.” Reggie’s voice was imploring her. She looked at him thoughtfully for a moment, and sat back down. She could not resist that tone of voice. It was intoxicating to her. She leaned forward as she listened. “Okay, I’m listening.”
“Let’s go back to our high school days. You loved Archie Andrews and you married Archie Andrews. I was desperately in love with you, back then.” At her amazed look he rushed on. “I know I didn’t tell you, because I knew you didn’t love me like that. I was deeply hurt and I almost lost my mind when you chose to marry Archie. I loathed you so much that when I heard about your miscarriage, I couldn’t be there for you. I was so sorry and I wanted to tell you how sorry I was in person, not by a card, but I just wasn’t able to come to you. After all, you had your husband to comfort you and I detested you both in my jealousy. Now Jughead just told me that you left Andrews and I …” He couldn’t stop all the pent up things he needed to say from just tumbling out, jumbled and almost
not making any sense. But Betty seemed to understand him. She was looking at him with an incredulous look.
“Reggie, you ignored me a few months ago, when you almost knocked me down in the street! You were arguing with some female and just snubbed me.” She was still smarting about that, quickly getting off the subject of her miscarriage. She did not want to talk about her lost baby.
“My God! I had no idea it was you. I didn’t see your face! Besides, the chick I was with was hounding me so hard that I was too busy trying to get rid of her to notice anyone! Do you really think I could have ignored you if I had seen you? Look at me Betty …damn!” Reggie was becoming impatient because his cell phone was ringing non -stop. He could not let Betty leave without him finishing. He decided to ignore the calls. But the phone just kept ringing.
“Answer the phone Reggie,” Betty couldn’t help giggling at his frustration. He picked up the phone, took out the battery, and threw the battery and phone parts into the trash, all in one smooth motion. “Now, where were we…?”
Betty bent over laughing. “I guess turning it off wasn’t an option,” she laughed, breathing a sigh of relief to see he was really still the same old Reggie she used to know. She went to retrieve his very expensive platinum cell phone and battery from the trash, and tried to hand the parts to him. He did not take them from her.
“You have to know this, Betty-I was very envious of you two being together, and couldn’t bear to see you with him. I had to punish you somehow, but I also punished myself. Please, forgive me for cutting you out of my life, babe?” She made no comment when he called her ‘babe’ this time. She did not know she was the only person Reggie ever called ‘babe’. She liked the endearment.
Reggie reached out for Betty as she looked at him in amazement, as if she could not believe Reggie Mantle was
telling her all of these things. Moreover, had she really just heard Reggie sincerely apologizing to her?“Reggie, I never knew you felt that way about me. You never let on...All those girls you went out with…” Her voice broke at the thought of the agony he felt because of her thoughtlessness. “Reggie, I’m sorry that I caused you so much pain. I’m so sorry.”
“It’s not your fault Betty. I never told you how I felt. Come here babe, I really need you in my life!” Reggie was sitting on the side of his bed, arms out, welcoming her to come into them. As Betty slowly came closer to him, her hands went out to envelope his. Reggie pulled her to him, until she was in his lap. He held her close to his heart and his eyes closed at the peace he felt. There was no kissing, no talking, just them holding each other.
The rapid thump of Reggie’s heart seemed to be her undoing. Betty began to cry, holding on to Reggie tighter, but ever mindful of his head and fractured ankle. She buried her face in his neck and heard his sigh of relief and pleasure. His embrace tightened even more.
Betty did not realize until that moment how much she missed his friendship, his strength of will, sense of humor, and his sense of character. She missed how much Reggie had made her laugh and how they shared secrets together. She could talk to him about anything and trust he would not tell anyone.
Reggie always had a way of making her feel special and he never allowed her to feel sad. She thought of how much she had needed Reggie over the years. When he pulled her closer, she felt like she had finally come home.
As Reggie held her while she cried, he felt his own eyes tear up. He just kept breathing in the scent of her hair and held her tight. She finally stopped crying and looked up at him.
“I realize that I missed having you around to fix the shit Archie always left me in. Without you there, my life was hell. I really, really missed you Mantle. Even with all your craziness, you were the most honest and dependable person I ever knew, outside of my family, of course.”“And I really, really missed you, Cooper. I lost my soul without you. All of those females were my way of trying to forget you. It didn’t work. There’s no one in the world like you. Are we friends again Betty?”
“Yes, Reggie. We’re friends again, until the end. Don’t ever let anything or anyone else ever come between our friendship again. Do you hear me?” Reggie happily nodded. “I hear you, babe.”
He rested his head on hers for a moment. He was so happy to know they were going to be friends again. He turned to lie back down as the drugs he was given began to work. He was exhausted, but he had a satisfied smile on his face, and Betty’s hand was still in his. She waited until he was asleep and kissed his cheek before she left. Jughead and Ethel were waiting for her in the visitor’s lounge. They all went home, tired, but happy that Betty and Reggie had finally made their peace.
Betty called Greg and cancelled their date for that night. She spent the evening scrapbooking before going to sleep. When she finally went to bed, she had a smile on her face. In fact, so did Reggie.
