PART 23
Fortunately, Black Canary thought as she stormed towards Lian's room, Arsenal was too distracted by a petite brunette at the nurses' station to hear the argument escalating in his daughter's room. She rolled her eyes. Honestly, keeping these two from screwing up their love life was going to be the death of her. Nightwing's next words, however, stopped her cold.
"Donna could have given Lian to Mia and transported both of them to the Watchtower. She didn't. She could have pushed both out the window. Again, she didn't. Instead, she made sure Lian was transported to a secure medical bay on the moon. Surrounded by Justice Leaguers. Why?"
Dinah glanced back at the nurses' station. Lian--riding in a red wagon commonly used instead of gurneys in the children's wing--was being transferred from a nurse to Roy. In moments, they would be returning to her room.
Quickly, Black Canary stepped inside and shut the door behind her. Nightwing, she noted, was in no-nonsense Bat mode. And Ollie? Unfortunately, Ollie was in full pissed off mode. She shook her head. Not good.
Nightwing continued. "She was protecting Mia. Just like she was protecting the Sloders."
"From Lian?" Ollie asked skeptically.
"From Lian."
Black Canary cleared her throat. "Guys--"
"Christ, she's a kid, she isn't--"
"Isn't what, Ollie? A meta? A freak? An ungodly aberration?"
Green Arrow stormed to his feet. Nightwing mirrored his movements. Black Canary planted herself between them. "Hey, you two--"
"Cut the crap."
"It wasn't crap when the SOC was after Donna, though, was it? But now that your granddaughter is the one who--"
Dinah let out a piercing whistle that effectively cut Nightwing off. Ollie scowled. "Hate when you do that."
Black Canary shrugged. "Works doesn't it?"
Nightwing studied her. "Your point?"
"My point is that one, half the hospital can hear you arguing and two--"
The door opened and Arsenal wheeled Lian in and steered her to her bed. By the time he lookedup, everyone's face was carefully neutral. He grinned at Nightwing as he settled Lian under the covers.
"See, Princess, told you Uncle Nightwing would visit you."
"...bullshit..." muttered Ollie under his breath.
Lian giggled. "Grampa Ollie said a no-no."
Arsenal frowned. "C'mon, Ollie--we talked about this. No cussing in front of my kid."
Ollie's face reddened. "Yeah. Sure. Whatever."
"I'm serious, man."
"You wanna talk serious? Why don't you ask 'Uncle' Nightwing why he's here?"
It was Nightwing's turn to blush. Still, he maintained his calm demeanor.
"You said Lian was available for interrogation."
"Interrogation?" Arsenal laughed. "Jeez, Wingster, you're talkin' about my kid like she's a suspect or somethin'." He nudged Nightwing in the ribs. "You wanna handcuff her, too, just to be safe?"
"Actually--" Nightwing caught Lian's nervous gaze. "--it would be better to move her to a secure location."
Lian grabbed Arsenal's hand and scooted closer to his side of the bed.
"Daddy, I don' wanna--"
"Guys?" Arsenal looked at the solemn faces surrounding him. He squeezed Lian's hand, silently reassuring her. "What's going on?"
"Bunch of bull--" Ollie caught Roy's warning glanced and ammended "--hooey."
Black Canary reluctantly admitted, "His theory fits the evidence, Ollie."
"What theory?" Roy asked tersely.
Nightwing kept a steady eye on Lian, watching for her reaction.
"I think Lian started the fire."
"Daddy, I didn't--"
"Not intentionally." Ollie added emphatically.
Lian buried her head under the covers.
"Stop it, stop it, stop it!"
Ollie saw movement out of the corner of his eye. He glanced at the table where Lian's plastic Power Ponies smiled cheerfully back at him. Most of them anyway. Opal was now a sparkly puddle of goo. Sapphire melted while he watched. Then Emerald wavered and began to lose shape.
"Oh, crap..." Ollie grabbed Roy and manhandled him towards the door. "Everybody out--NOW!"
"Daddeeee!"
Roy landed a solid punch to Ollie's jaw knocking him to the floor. He turned back to Lian. In the blink of an eye, her metal gurney flared white hot. The red wagon at the foot of the bed buckled. Ceiling sprinklers melted. What water did escape quickly evaporated into steam.
Black Canary's hands flew up to shield her face from the scalding mist. Smoke rose from her bird shape communicator. She tore it from her throat and threw it to the floor where it continued to smolder.
Roy watched his daughter in horror.
"Etai yazi?"
Lian reached out as she had done so many times before in her young life for the comfort of her daddy's embrace to make things all better. This time, her innocent gesture unleashed a wall of flames. Searing heat roiled across her father's skin. He screamed.
"ROY!"
Black Canary's sonic scream pierced the air, knocking the wall of fire away from Arsenal. Nightwing seized the opportunity to tackle Roy out of the room and into the corridor. The flame retardant properties of Nightwing's costume helped smother the flames.
Ollie grabbed the fire extinguisher. He hissed in pain as its casing heated up in his hands. He was forced to drop it or get burned.
"Dammit!"
A metallic click as Nightwing activated his com's emergency button.
"Oracle to Nightwing."
"Oracle, emergency transport. Fifteen seconds."
"Acknowledged. Countdown initiated."
He tossed the com to Ollie who snatched it out of the air with ease. Ollie hugged the floor, crawling under the flames.
Black Canary's scream still held back the flames but she was running out of breath.
Oracle's familiar warning signal sounded on the com channel.
"Clear all channels. Standby Watchtower. Ten seconds."
"Watchtower on standby."
"Five seconds."
Ollie caught a break in the flames and tossed Nightwing's communicator into Lian's lap. He glimpsed her tear-streaked face-untouched by the fire raging around her. Felt his gut twist as her fearful eyes pleaded silently for his help.
"Watchtower, transport."
Black Canary jerked Ollie into the hallway just as she ran out of breath. The flames flared outward. By this time the hospital's fire alarm clanged through the building. Firemen in full gear raced down the corridor.
A flash of light and the Watchtower transporter beamed Lian to the JLA's moonbase.
