Yes I've done my evil
I've done my good
Just believe me honey
I won't let go of you
You Are the One, HIM
I sat in the parking lot for a moment, trying to calm myself. I wasn’t at the prison just to have the ten minutes that they would give me with Mick through a glass window. I wanted to be face to face, which meant talking my way in.
Taking another breath, I made myself get out of the car. There was no point avoiding it, I was going to have to go in eventually.
The walk to the entrance seemed long, but in reality it was only a hundred metres or so. Every cell in my body was telling me to turn around, that I didn’t need to do this. But I did. I needed to confront him so that he wasn’t in my head anymore.
“Can I help you?” The guard at the front desk asked. “Visiting hours are over.”
“Well,” I gave him a sweet smile, using my most persuasive voice. “You could escort me to the prisoner I’m here to see? I’m sure no one would mind.”
His face softened and he immediately stood up. “Of course, Miss. Who are you here to see?”
“Mick Rory.”
He nodded, checking something on the computer. “Come on through this way. You’ll still need to check in your things, just to be safe.”
I followed along behind him, speeding through the check in process because I only had my bag. He led me through a gate, and gestured to a chair in front of the closest cell.
“Stay away from the bars. I’ll be just through this gate if you need anything, but far enough away to give you some privacy.”
I nodded, sitting down and looking over at Mick, who had approached his cell door.
“I’m surprised you came to visit.” He said quietly, his eyes drifting over my body.
“Since you’re going to be here for a long time, I figured it might be time to get some closure from you.” I crossed my legs, keeping a calm face. I could feel the eyes of multiple other prisoners on me, but they stayed quiet for now.
“Are you sure that’s why you’re here?” He grinned. “Are you sure it wasn’t because you miss me?”
“I wouldn’t miss you if you were the only person left on Earth, Mick.”
He pouted. “Oh, but babe, we had such good times together. Do you think putting me back in here will stop me? Now that I’m back in your life, I’m not planning on letting you go.”
My heart was beginning to pound in my chest, and I could feel adrenaline pumping through my veins, but I kept myself under control. “No, I never thought having you back in prison would stop you, that’s why I’ve protected myself.”
“You never had the guts to do what you had to in order to protect yourself. Why would that change now?”
“Because,” I stood up, walking as close to the bars as I could without him touching me. “I know what I’m capable of now. Your friend Talia? She’s lying dead on a mountain in the Himalayas. That’s what I can do. And I won’t hesitate, if you ever come after me again.”
He didn’t reply, just looked at me with mild surprise on his face. I turned, looking down the corridor at the other cells. I spoke softly, but let my voice float out to all of them.
“The next time you are all out of your cells, it would make me so happy if you could harass and beat up my friend Mick here. He really deserves it.”
A murmur of agreement hit my ears, and I looked back at him with a smug smile.
“There, enjoy.” I walked over to the gate, calling out for the guard. As he let me out, I ignored the sounds of Mick shouting insults and swearing at me.
I stumbled back to my car, the calm mask slipping from my face as the panic set in again. It didn’t matter that I could protect myself. It didn’t matter that he was in prison. I was still dealing with the fear of how he treated me.
I drove out of the prison gates, parking down the road as I burst into tears. Shaking and fearful, I leaned my head on the steering wheel to cry. I had to get it all out before I could move on.
My phone began to ring, and I wiped my eyes, trying to calm myself a little before answering. When I saw it was Bane, I took a deep breath and picked up.
“I just wanted to check in. Are you okay?” He asked.
“Not really. But I will be.” I wiped another tear away. “I’ll be back soon.”
He was silent for a moment. “Is there anything you need?”
“Nothing I can think of right now. I’ll let you know when I get home.”
“I love you. I’ll see you soon.”
A small smile crept across my face. “I love you too.”
Hanging up the phone, I felt a little better. I drove off, heading straight home so I could just relax and not think about it. It was a long drive, but that gave me time to calm my heart and get my head together.
I parked out front of the house, making sure all evidence of my tears was gone before I went in. It wasn’t that I thought they would make fun of me, it was just that I wasn’t in the mood for questions.
I walked straight to the study, knocking on the door. I didn’t wait for an answer before I stepped inside, but thankfully Bane was the only one in there.
“Feeling any better?” He asked, wrapping me up in a tight hug.
“A little.” I rested my head on his chest. “I feel safer, but the fear that came with confronting him is still there.”
He pressed a kiss to the top of my head, not speaking, just comforting me. I didn’t need him to talk, it was enough to just hold me like that.
“I’m going to have a bath, and then call my mum.” I stood on my toes to kiss him.
“I’ll come up to see you in a couple of hours.”
He stood outside the slightly open bedroom door, listening to her voice. He wasn’t entirely eavesdropping, because he didn’t take in what she was saying. He just wanted to know she was okay.
Her voice sounded calmer now, and he walked away, feeling more certain she was going to be okay. He couldn’t protect her from everything, but it sounded like she was going to be able to protect herself now.
“I miss you, Mum.” I said, quietly.
“I know, Sweetie. I miss you too.” Her voice was soft, but it comforted me anyway. “You’ve done a lot over the past month, but you’re safe now. I’ll come visit soon.”
“I could come visit you.” I laughed.
She chuckled. “You could, but I want to make sure all of you are treating my house right. I only know Jack. I’ve met Bane once, but I just want to know everything is fine there.”
“Mum, are you serious?” I asked, indignantly. I got up from the bed, walking to the window to look out. “You trust him to look after me, but you don’t trust him with the house?”
“I’m just messing with you. I’ll talk to you soon.”
Hanging up the phone, I turned when I heard the door open. Bane walked in, sitting down on the corner of the bed.
“Were you eavesdropping?” I asked, walking over to him to stand between his legs.
“If you didn’t want anyone to hear, you should have shut the door.” He wrapped his arms around me, resting his head against my stomach. “But no, I wasn’t. I was just coming by to check up on you.”
“I’m better now.” Taking a deep breath, I climbed into his lap. “He’s dealt with.”
He traced my spine with his fingers, up and down, making me shiver a little. “Good. Is there anything I can do?”
I shook my head, wrapping my arms around his neck. “You’re already doing it.”
He kissed me, holding me tightly. I gently pushed him onto the mattress, resting my forearms on his chest and looking down at him.
“Just having you around is enough.” I said quietly.
He softly pulled me down for another kiss. “I’ll always be around for you.”
As I kissed him again, my chest against his, I finally felt safe again. I was in a place I belonged, and I finally knew what I was capable of.
