I woke with a gasp, feeling my heart pounding so hard I could hear it in my ears. Another night, another nightmare, and they didn’t seem to be getting any better. I thought that going through Jonathan’s drug would make it better, but it didn’t seem to be helping at all.
I was alone in the bed once again, which hurt this time, because I really needed him. Getting up, I threw his shirt on over my underwear and walked to his office. I didn’t want to be alone, not while I was still feeling so shaky.
“Jon?” I quietly pushed the door open, finding him in his chair, facing the window.
He turned to look at me, waving me in. I walked over, sitting on the desk in front of him. He saw the look on my face and took my hand, pressing a kiss to my palm.
“Another one?” He asked, looking up at me.
I nodded. “It was bad. I thought they would get better, but they aren’t.”
“What can I do?”
“I need to go see Roman.” I rested my hands on the edge of the desk, taking a deep breath. “He’s in Arkham, but I want to break him out so I can confront him properly. Will you help me?”
“I’ll do what I can, but we’ll need to call in a favour, since neither of us can get into Arkham very easily right now.” He gestured at his laptop.
I turned to look, finding an article open. Salvatore Maroni in Custody, the headline read, and I sighed.
“Fuck. He always seems to get arrested at the worst times.” I ran my fingers through my hair. “Could I get myself arrested again and then break out?”
“No!” He almost shouted, standing up suddenly. His hands slammed down on mine, holding me in place.
I flinched, a little scared. “Jon…”
He took a deep breath, calming himself. “I’m sorry. If you go back in there, without me to stop them, they’ll make things so much worse for you. They will hurt you, Lili.”
“Then how do I get him out of there? Because I can’t exactly go in and have a conversation with him.”
“Ed has hacked into the system before, he could probably do it again. Then you can just go in and break him out.” He let go of my hands, taking hold of my face so he could kiss me.
“You’d let me do that?”
He sat down again, gently pulling me into his lap. “If I said no, would it change your mind?”
I shook my head, and he chuckled a little, pressing a kiss to my cheek.
“Then I guess I have to let you.” He wrapped his arms around me, pulling me tight against him. “I won’t stop you from doing what you need to, I’ll just keep you safe while you do it.”
“I’ll be fine.” I hesitated, not because I didn’t believe it, but because I was still struggling with my feelings. “Jon, I…”
“I’m sorry for scaring you.” He whispered, unbuttoning the first two buttons of my shirt. “The thought of you, back in that place…”
I gave him a small smile. “That’s a first. You’ve apologised for a lot, but I didn’t expect you to apologise for that.”
“I’m surprising myself too.” He pressed a kiss between my breasts, making me shiver a little. “I really don’t want you to go back there. I know nothing I can say will stop you, but I want you to know that all I care about is making sure you stay safe.” He looked up, his gaze catching mine. “But I interrupted you. What were you going to say?”
Gently pressing a kiss to his lips, I shook my head. It wasn’t the right time to say it, and I wasn’t ready. “It’s not important.”
“Are you sure? I promise I’ll listen.”
“It can wait.” I kissed him again, deeper this time. “Sorry for disturbing your work. I’ll sit over there and read.”
He looked up from his calculations, watching her as she read. She was listening to music, and every so often she reached down to her phone to change the song. Her knees were bent, and she rested her book against them. Because she was only wearing his shirt, the position she was sitting in meant it didn’t cover her legs at all. He could see all the way up to where her underwear crossed her hip.
Will you let me touch her, just this once? Scarecrow asked, almost politely. I won’t hurt her, I just want to know what it feels like from the driver’s seat.
“You haven’t exactly proven yourself trustworthy.” Jonathan replied, turning his chair to look out the window. “Last time I let you out around her, your thoughts went straight to choking her out. I don’t intend to give you another chance to do that. You can stick with living in the back seat.”
You know it doesn’t feel the same from this side. You said you would think about it.
“Fine. When she’s ready to talk with you, I’ll release control. But only when she’s ready.”
I paced impatiently back and forth across Ed’s workshop. It was taking a long time for him to hack into Arkham’s system, which surprised me.
“This wouldn’t take so long if you weren’t constantly pacing. Your footsteps are distracting.” He sighed, looking up from his computer.
I sat down in the armchair, wrapping my arms around myself. “Sorry. I just want to get this over with. I’m not excited about going back in there.”
“You’re not concerned about your father?”
“God, no.” I laughed. “He’s likely already out on bail. He owns most of the justice system in Gotham. The only reason I ended up in Arkham was because the evidence was so stacked against me that letting me go would have made his influence obvious.”
He shrugged and got back to work, typing away on his computer. I knew I should go get a book to read or find something to do, but I was having trouble keeping my attention on anything. So I just sat there quietly, trying to keep from being distracting.
“Finally.” He waved me over. “They upgraded their system since the last time I hacked in, but it was nothing I couldn’t handle.”
Walking over, I stood behind him to see. He pulled up a blueprint of the asylum, tracing a path through it.
“This is the path that will get you to Roman’s cell, passing the smallest number of cameras and guards. I can shut down the cameras, set off alarms, anything you need, from right here.” He stood up, pushing me into the chair. “Sit and memorise it.”
“Yes, dad.” I rolled my eyes, but did as I was told.
I traced the path with my finger, making sure I knew each turn off by heart. Over and over again. Then I printed out a blank copy of the blueprint, turned off the screen, and drew it. I had to get this right, or I was going to be in more trouble than I’d ever been before.
“Are you sure about this?” Ed asked, from across the desk. “If it goes wrong, it’ll be really wrong.”
“Honestly…” I sighed, running my fingers through my hair. “No. Not entirely. I haven’t really been sure of anything for a while, but I have to do it. I don’t know how else to get rid of the nightmares.”
He nodded. “I’m not going to stop you. I just want to make sure you think this through. There’s a chance you might not come back, that’s all.”
I stood up, stretching my arms over my head. “Ed, I’m the daughter of the biggest mob boss in Gotham City. Every time I leave the house, there’s a chance I won’t come back. I’m aware this is a fair amount riskier, but still.”
“As long as you know the risks. Now, can I have my computer back or not?”
“All yours.” I got out of his way, pausing at the door to look back at him. “Thanks, Ed. I know I’ve been a bit of a handful, but it’s good to know you’re watching my back.”
“I’ll deny it if you tell anyone, but I do like having you around. You’re much more conversational than tall and brooding in the other room.” He gestured in the direction of Jon’s lab.
I left the room, walking back to my bedroom. I couldn’t just head straight into Arkham unarmed, but I had no idea if my guns and my knife were still at my apartment or if Jon or someone else had taken them. He was out anyway, so I couldn’t ask him until he got back.
So I stripped off, stepping into the shower. I’d only just turned on the water when I heard a voice from the doorway.
“Can I join you?”
I pulled the shower curtain back, sticking my head out to find Jon standing there. “I’d like that.”
A few moments later, he stepped inside, wrapping his arms around my naked body. He pulled my close, pressing a kiss to the top of my head.
“I thought you were going to be out for another hour.” I commented, resting my head against his chest.
“I got what I needed faster than expected.” His fingers drifted up and down my spine, his cool skin contrasting against the warm water that was gently spraying my back. “Did you sort everything out with Edward?”
I nodded. “I need a day or two, but I know that I’m ready for this.”
He turned, pushing me up against the wall. He knew every curve of my body at this point, and he also seemed to understand that sometimes I like just being touched, even if it doesn’t lead anywhere.
“Promise me you’ll be smart about this.” He dipped his head to kiss me. “And you’ll tell me if you need anything.”
“I need to go get my guns, but that’s it.” I managed to say, as he kissed my neck again. “Did you take them from my apartment?”
He shook his head. “Everything is still there. We can go get them once we’re done here.”
