When Reggie searched for Betty for a few minutes without success, he decided to ask one of the burly security staff members if he had seen where she went.
“No Reggie, the only blonde I saw out here recently just jumped in a taxi.” At Reggie’s disappointed face, the gorgeous security guard named Benny added, ”Hey boss, there’re plenty of pretty chicks here tonight. Which one do you want me to send to your table?”
“I’m only interested in this one particular woman, Benny. She’s an old friend of mine. No, don’t send anyone over. Thanks anyway.” Dejected, Reggie went back inside. He did not know that Betty had been hiding behind one of the screens out front, hidden and listening to him the whole time. The where the two well-built guards stood in front of her yo shield her from Reggie.
“Please hide me! There’s a real asshole after me,” she begged them when she had gone flying outside.
“Sure baby. Don't sweat it. Want me to handle him?”
“No, you can’t because it’s your boss I’m hiding from. I don’t want you to get fired because of me. I'll just wait here for my friends to find me. Thanks for helping me.” Benny placed his coat around her trembling shoulders. Betty felt safe from Reggie there. She would stay there until Ethel or Jughead found her.
The guards, K-Rule and Benny knew their boss very well. They knew women found Reggie very hard to resist and they decided they would help this one save her virtue from the Wolf. Most of the women they dealt with didn’t want to be ‘saved’ from Reggie. Reggie was usually the one they would be helping to hide from some amorous female. This one was a very smart girl. Reggie was dangerous to a girl’s virtue. They knew he was notorious for loving and leaving them. No one outside would tell Reggie where Betty was hiding.
*** Back at the table, Ethel and Jughead were just looking at each other in amused amazement at what just transpired between their friends and a little fear. “Will they try to kill us now?” Ethel wondered aloud, laughing at Jughead who had his hands full trying to calm down a very angry and hurt Greg.“I should fuck up that guy. He had no right to kiss her like that!” Greg said, trying to get back up.
“Chill Greg! One, Reggie would absolutely terminate you if you got in his face, and two, the one way you can turn Betty off is to be jealous. Calm down! And stay down!” Jughead pushed Greg down hard into his seat for the third time. Greg finally stayed down. He saw that Jughead meant business. Ethel covered her mouth to stifle a laugh. “God baby, I love it when you get all forceful!” Jughead shot her a warning look.
“Not now E! You know I’ll have to deal with Reggie in a few minutes! Please go look after Betty.” Ethel nodded, kissed Jughead and left to search for Betty. As if Jughead’s words had summoned him, Ethel could see Reggie trying to make his way towards them. It took him a while to get to their table because of his admirers giving him kudos; so this gave Ethel a chance to slip past him unseen. She couldn’t stop to deal with Reggie’s rage right then because she had to find Betty right away.
When she got outside, Ethel asked one of the bouncers at the entrance if they had seen Betty and Benny took Ethel to where Betty was hiding, still crying and upset. Betty cried out when she saw Ethel, as she shivered and hiccupped with her makeup running down her face.
“It’s okay sweetie. I know, I know. Please don’t cry,” taking her in her arms. Ethel understood the emotions Betty was feeling. She had felt like this about Jughead when he would not give her the time of day in their youth. Ethel held Betty until she calmed down. Ethel handed Betty a tissue from her purse.
“I have to admit, Reggie was magnificent, wasn’t he, though he’d be the first to say so?” Ethel tried to lighten the mood, causing Betty to laugh through her tears.
“Yep, that’s Reginald the Wolf for you. He’s as humble as they come.” With that, Betty began crying some more, her face buried in Ethel’s neck.
“Oh my God Ethel! What will Greg think? I don’t know what came over me! I couldn’t stop myself from going up there and making a fool of myself. I can’t believe I acted like that!” Betty sobbed even more when she thought of how she had reacted to her old friend Reggie.
“Look Betty, the whole night was overwhelming, with the excitement of seeing the Wolf in action. Reggie always had that special something that lured women in and you know how sexy he is. If I wasn’t in love with Jughead, who knows? I might have given him a tasty treat or two.” They both howled with laughter at Ethel’s words, because Betty knew Ethel was kidding. Everyone knew Jughead was the only man for her.
“I have to say I need to be alone with my man, like soon. I see ole Reggie has the hots for you, girl. Your man has gotten me feeling a little, ‘funny’, if you get my drift?” Ethel kissed her cheek, trying to get her friend to see the humor of the situation.
“Please Ethel. It’s not funny! Reggie is not my man! If you’re trying to make me feel better, don’t say that! Even if I wanted him, and I don’t, Reggie hates me, remember? Thanks for trying to cheer me up, though. Oh, God! I acted like one of his groupies!”
“Look Betty, we can go on forever about this, but did he really look like he hates you, hmm? I truly believe he loves you. And at least you kept your underwear on and didn’t throw your panties at him!” They hugged each other, while laughing even harder at the circumstances. Reggie’s show had been too much even for Ethel, who was used to the emotional ride and pleasures of the entertainment world.
“Betty, I’ll go back inside and make our excuses so we could go. But first, I’ll call for the limo. You wait in there while I go get the guys and our stuff.” Ethel was amazed at the sights she encountered when she re-entered the club. The whole place seemed to be in sexual chaos, thanks to the Wolf’s performance. There were many couples dirty dancing on the floor, while others were kissing in corners, and some were stripping off their clothes or sneaking in the restrooms together. The VIP lounges had closed the blinds and locked the doors and there were very suspicious moans and cries coming from them.
Reggie’s security staff was very busy keeping amorous people from getting carried away and putting the club at risk for being closed down for lewd behavior. It was a crazy scene in there. As Ethel made her way to their table, she was given her own praise and applause about their clothing line.
“Great clothes, E. Where’s Ann? Where can I buy that dress you’re wearing?” People asked her as she passed them. The best was the compliment from Count Marco Ignacio, a famous and very rich Italian designer and owner of dozens of high end boutiques named, Belle Donna: and an old rival turned friend of Reggie’s. “I’ll have my people call your order department because I want a thousand of that outfit you and the lovely Ann are wearing for a start. I love them! I want one hundred of the gowns each of the models wore, and three hundred of Reggie’s outfit, molto!”
“Thanks so much, Count!” Ethel almost shouted as she shook hands with him and gave him one of her fancy gold embossed business cards, unbelieving how much Reggie had helped them tonight.
Just wait until I tell the others about the Count’s huge order!, she thought gleefully. Ethel saw Reggie sitting at the table with Jughead, and could see they were having a deep, very intense conversation, totally ignoring Greg’s presence. She hung back, watching the action from a short distance away. Ethel knew the two men she’d known most of her life was talking about Betty. What else could they be talking about? Ethel held her breath as she watched them. She hoped they wouldn’t come to blows.
“You know something, Jughead? I should kill you! Why did you bring her here when I distinctly told you I don’t want her around me?” Reggie was so angry he wanted to kill Jughead with his bare hands. “Why did you bring her here pretending to be Ann Avery and where’s that jackass husband of hers?” Ethel could see Reggie actually snarling at Jughead.
Just like a wolf, ready to tear out Jughead’s jugular, she noted fearfully.“Hey Mantle, relax man! You, yes, you, told us, no, you demanded, that we never mention Betty to you, remember? Well, Betty finally left Archie, so take it easy on her! She hasn’t been too well lately because Archie nearly broke her heart. He couldn’t be faithful to her and Betty caught him. She was a mess when she arrived here and you can thank Ethel for saving her. I won’t let anyone hurt Betty ever again!” Jughead though angry, was struggling not to laugh at the amazed look on the unshakable Reggie Mantle’s face. He remained silent, further surprising Jughead.
“Neither Ethel nor I will tolerate your shit, Mantle. Actually, I didn’t know how to tell you she was here! You’re lucky we think you’re what Betty needs, or we wouldn’t let you near her!” Reggie gasped at that statement. “Now wait a minute…” Jughead cut him off before he could say anything else.
“So, now that you know Betty’s here, and will be single very soon, what are you gonna do about it, huh? Oh, and she’s the mysterious Ann Avery because we’re hiding her from Archie. He’s been acting real crazy and looking all over for her. He hasn’t guessed out she's here yet, but he will. We’re waiting for him to figure out Betty’s here with us and come here to force her to go back to him.”
“Shit! Betty left Archie? I can’t believe it! But he was always a nut job to me,” Reggie was speaking slowly, as he took all of this astonishing information in.
“Betty’s parents made Archie think she went to her family in Colorado. But it’s only a matter of time before he finds out she’s here with us. He’s insistent on finding her.” Reggie still had an incredulous look on his face. He was silent for such a long moment, that Jughead wondered if he was
breathing, or even heard his words. Jughead was impatiently waiting for Reggie’s reaction to this news.Ethel and Jughead observed an indiscernible change come over Reggie. It seemed as if a weight fell off his shoulders, as if seeing Betty and hearing she’d left Archie had started a metamorphosis in him. Taking in deep breaths, in order to calm his nerves, Reggie finally spoke, in a raspy whisper.
“Damn! Betty left Archie! Sorry I yelled at you, Jughead. I promise to help protect her. And I won’t hurt her. Jughead, I’ve always loved her. I guess I never really stopped loving her. There! I’ve admitted it.” This all came out very slow, as if he just had an epiphany. Reggie had not let these words cross his mind or his lips for a very long time. He, Reginald Richard Mantle IV knew he still loved Betty Ann Cooper. And after all this time he could finally admit to someone how he felt and say it out loud.
“Mantle you have your work cut out for you. Betty was really torn up when you left for New York so long ago and did not speak to her anymore. You two were best friends. Her emotions are very fragile right now. Archie’s fighting the divorce tooth and nail and he won’t sign the papers. He’s left me over a dozen crazy messages about how he needs to find her and he’s not letting her go. That’s everything in a nutshell.” Jughead was watching Reggie’s face carefully the whole time he spoke. Reggie looked like he was in shock. When he didn’t reply, Jughead pressed on.
“Well, Mantle, here’s your chance. This is the only chance you’ll get. If you blow it, I’ll introduce Betty to some very rich and worthy guys I know. And there‘s always Greg. He likes her a lot and seems to be a good guy.” Jughead motioned towards poor Greg, and Reggie scowled at him, which made him very nervous. Jughead’s expression showed he was serious. He would keep his word if Reggie screwed up. “You get it Mantle? I really mean business here. Don’t make me have to kick your ass if you fuck this up.” Jughead’s warning jerked Reggie forward in his seat.
“Now, Jughead, no need for all of that! I’m the man she needs! And I guarantee I’ll be the only man she wants. Betty’s mine and I’m not letting her get away from me again. Shit! I have to apologize to her for my behavior tonight. I thought she was here with Archie.” Reggie gave Jughead a salute. They stood up and shook hands, a signal for Ethel to join them. All of them forgot Greg’s presence and he watched them in silent agony.
“Come over soon and make nice with her. Not tonight though, okay bro? Are we cool?”
“Everything’s cool, Jughead.” They shook hands again. Ethel had reached them, happy all was well.
“Is all forgiven, Reggie? Awesome show by the way. We could never thank you enough for the hard work in getting our business so much publicity. We all love you.”
Reggie hugged Ethel. “What are friends for, E? You’d do it for me.” Ethel and Jughead were very surprised Reggie did not brag more about his performance. He’d definitely earned his bragging rights this night.
Soon Ethel and Jughead left with Ethel blowing Reggie a kiss. A sullen Greg followed them. I’ve lost her before I even had her, Greg thought sadly. He knew he was no competition for Reggie Mantle.
Reggie returned the gesture and threw a kiss back at Ethel. Jughead would fill Ethel in on their little chat later. Ethel and Jughead were so relieved and happy those two finally met again.
“That went well, huh Jughead. I’m so happy. I know Reggie still loves Betty, and she loves him. She just doesn’t realize it yet. This is going to be so much fun, sweetie.”
“I’m glad you think so, lovey. I’m hoping this all does not lead to bloodshed.”
“What are you saying, Jughead?”
“I just have a bad feeling about all of this. Archie’s really going nuts. He’s not going to want our friends to be together. He’s always hated Reggie, and Betty getting with Reggie is going to push him over the edge. Maybe it’s just my suspicious nature. Spurned love makes even sane people nuts, and I always thought Archie was crazy. Let’s go rescue Betty and go home to celebrate.”
Everyone was silent in the limo, deep in their own thoughts. They dropped Greg off first. He got out the limo without a word because he was deeply hurt by Betty’s behavior. Betty was still tearful and angry. Ethel and Jughead were both holding her. She cried all the way home.
What a night! thought Jughead. By now, Jughead and Ethel were too tired to make love. They all fell into bed when they arrived home, emotionally exhausted to the bone.
