Betty’s nose was left to heal on it’s own.
She may need corrective surgery if there was any disfigurement. But it seemed she would heal without the need for plastic surgery. Her bruises had begun to fade.
She was not raped, but the trauma she suffered was equal to rape and Betty had to attend a support group for victims of sexual crimes.
Betty could not face going back to school so she continued her education at home, refusing to see any of her friends. Ethel was the most persistent, and pretty much forced her way into the Cooper household. She would study with Betty every day. Later, Betty allowed Nancy and Midge to visit. But no Reggie.
Veronica and Archie visited. The other girls just made sure to come over before or after Veronica left. She got on everybody’s nerve.
Miss Grundy and Mr. Weatherbee made sure Betty got her assignments and passed all her exams.
The senior class actually decided not to have a prom due to what happened to Betty.
No one felt like celebrating right now. They would celebrate after Betty was well and up to a party.
All of Betty’s friends insisted she let them visit her, and her parents convinced her to let her friends come over to see her. They all came over. Not Reggie though.
All of Betty’s friends came over to the Cooper’s home-Nancy, Ethel, Chuck, Jughead, Midge, Maria, Sabrina, Josie, Dilton, Moose, Veronica, Archie, and even Cheryl Blossom.
All of Betty’s teachers visited her. Even those of the faculty Betty didn’t have classes with.
Her sister Polly and brother-in-law was still in town. They would leave after Betty’s graduation. Chick visited whenever he could.
But still no Reggie Mantle.
The support of her friends was helping her to heal.
Betty also went for counseling as a crime victim.
It was not her fault. Life could not be over. She will heal, in time.
Betty felt the deep, stabbing pain of Reggie’s absence, but said nothing.
Once Betty was settled in at home, Reggie stopped visiting her.
Reggie called her folks at least 3 times a day to check on her. But he never came over. Or called her.
Reggie was so ashamed and angry at himself for not protecting Betty , that he couldn’t face her. It was easy while she was in the hospital, drugged and not fully conscious.
Betty was not drugged any longer. He couldn’t bear to see the disappointment and disgust in her eyes when she looked at him.
“Mom, did Reggie call?”
“Yes honey. He calls every day to check on you.”
“Why doesn’t he speak to me?”
“He said he doesn’t want to disturb you. You need your rest.” Alice Cooper was puzzled by Reggie’s logic.
She had told Reggie during one of his calls that Betty was waiting to talk to him.
“Come on over Reggie. You are always welcome here” Alice had added.
Reggie had become a coward. But he will visit her soon. He missed her so much.
”I’ll be over soon, Mrs. Cooper”
But not yet. He couldn’t bear to see her hurting because of his stupidity.
Even Archie told Reggie he needed to go see Betty. “Betty misses you Reggie. She even asked me about
you. She really needs you, man.“ There was no love lost between Reggie and Archie.
“ I can’t see her right now, Red. Betty needs more time to forgive me. Besides, she has you around to help her get better. Make sure you don’t do anything to upset her, doofus. ”
Reggie also needed more time to forgive himself.
Reggie really feared Betty would turn back to Archie in her time of need.
“It’s not me she wants Mantle. Bets wants you!” Did Archie sound a little jealous of that?
When Betty called Reggie, they would chat for a short while, but Reggie soon had to go, had something pressing to do. Reggie was at a lost for words. He couldn’t help the feelings of self loathing he felt.
‘What was the matter with him?’
Betty was afraid Reggie didn’t care about her anymore.
