Once upon a time there was a boy who loved a girl, and her laughter was a question he wanted to spend his whole life answering. Nicole Krauss, The History of Love
I sat on the edge of the bed, watching as Bruce got dressed. I still wasn’t feeling great, so even though we had a day to spend together, we’d decided to just hang out at home.
“You don’t have to put a shirt on.” I smirked. “It might make me feel better if you don’t.”
He laughed, tossing the shirt on the bed and walking to me. “You’re supposed to be resting.”
I stood up, wrapping my arms around him. “I can rest and appreciate how good looking you are at the same time.”
“Fine, I won’t put my shirt on.” He pressed a kiss to the top of my head. “Do you want me to get you anything?”
I thought for a moment. “Do you have any more of that dark chocolate cookie dough ice cream? I would kill for some right now.”
He let go of me, stepping back. “I’ll go get you a bowl.”
While I was waiting for him to get back, I turned on the television. I wasn’t really watching, but I think I just needed the sound. I shuffled back along the bed, until I could lean against the headboard.
It was only a few minutes before he returned. He sat down beside me, handing over the bowl of ice cream.
“Mmm, I love you.” I whispered, digging in.
“Are you talking to me or the ice cream?” He slid his arm around my waist.
Laughing, I looked up at him. “Both?”
“Nice save.” He kissed the top of my head. “Feeling better?”
“Much, with you looking after me.” I leaned against him, eating my ice cream. “I don’t know what’s going on at the moment.”
He didn’t reply straight away, drifting his fingers up and down my side for a few moments. I finished the bowl, putting it on the bedside table, then turned to him.
“What is it?” I asked, softly resting my hand on his knee.
He shook his head. “Nothing important. You’re probably just a little run down. Late nights and stress probably don’t help.”
I was about to say something more, but then the news started and I heard what the breaking story was.
“After allegations of adultery and dealings with mob leader Carmine Falcone, Mayor Hamilton Hill is stepping down. Corruption charges will be brought against him, however District Attorney Harvey Dent has chosen to focus on his case against Falcone first.” The reporter said. “In other news, the Joker has struck again, this time robbing a bank with ties to some of the richest people in Gotham.”
“I wish I’d been smarter about how I went about that.” I said quietly. “Do you think Falcone will come after me again?”
He hesitated for a moment. “Honestly, I don’t know. I’m hoping that he’ll be too preoccupied with his defence to hold a grudge against you.”
“I guess it’s a good thing I have you watching out for me then.” I turned off the TV, getting up to change out of my pyjamas.
“You don’t make it easy for me.”
I pulled my shirt off, feeling his eyes on me as I stripped down. His gaze still made me blush, but I didn’t avoid it because I like feeling needed.
“Are you coming to the party tomorrow? Or do I need to cover for you again?” I pulled on my underwear and a light summer dress.
“I’ll be there.” He walked over, stopping behind me and wrapping his arms around my body. “I can’t have people thinking I’m a completely absent partner.”
I leaned back against him, my skin heating up with his touch. I wanted to say more, but I was very distracted by what he was doing.
Bruce opened the car door, holding out his hand to help me out. As I stepped up onto the curb, I tripped. He caught me, wrapping an arm around my waist.
“Are you alright?” He asked, making sure I was steady.
I nodded, trying not to blush as cameras flashed around us. “A little embarrassed, but I’m fine. Can’t wait to see it in the Gazette tomorrow.”
Brushing a stray hair from my eyes, he leaned in to kiss me. I couldn’t hold back the blush anymore, but I was thankful that my makeup would cover it up.
He let me go, keeping his arm around my waist. “That should give them something less embarrassing to talk about.”
“Thank you.” I whispered, as we walked into the museum.
The hall was already filling up with people, and we made our way through the crowd. As we stopped in front of the bar, I turned to him.
“I was thinking…” I took hold of his jacket, pulling him close.
“The sort of thinking that will end with you getting in trouble?” He asked, with a cheeky grin.
I gave him a look of mock hurt, then continued. “Only if it goes completely wrong. We haven’t been on an actual date for a couple of weeks, and I think it’s my turn to ask you somewhere.”
“What did you have in mind?” He pressed a kiss to the top of my head.
“Do you still like rock climbing?”
He nodded. “Yes, but it’s been a while.”
“Good, then I might have a chance to beat you to the top this time.” I laughed, wrapping my arms around his neck. “Dance with me?”
He swept me onto the floor, pulling me so close I could almost feel his heart beating in his chest. I gazed up into his eyes, feeling like everything was the way I wanted it to be.
“I know that what we have wouldn’t be considered normal.” I said quietly. “And I wouldn’t ask to change any of it, because I love being at your side while you do all this, but maybe we could attempt to get out a little more? At least make it look like we’re normal? It doesn’t always have to be these parties, but I don’t want to go everywhere on my own without you, that’s all.”
“I’m sorry, Eve. You’re right.” He traced my spine with his fingers. “I’ve been at this for almost a year now, and until you came back, I didn’t have to worry about trying to balance my time.”
“We’ll work this out.” I softly kissed him. “I love you, and…”
I was cut off as a scream echoed around the room. There was gunfire, and people began to panic. A man with green hair walked down the stairs towards the crowd, a large gun in his hand. I knew exactly who it was, he’d been all over the news for the past week, but I needed to stay calm. Bruce looked between him and me, clearly torn by what to do.
I pulled him close, kissing him once. “Go, Bruce. I can take care of myself.”
He took off into the chaos, managing to slip out the side door. Before I could follow the crowd, gunfire rang out again, and everyone stopped. I turned to see another man push through the crowd and grab Garcia.
Without thinking, I ran over, pushing through people, until I reached them. I punched the man in the face, knocking him backwards.
“Are you alright?” I asked Anthony, who nodded. “Get out.”
He ran, pushing through people. The attacker had already recovered, and he grabbed me, dragging me towards Joker. I didn’t fight, not wanting to make this any worse for myself. I just had to hold out until Bruce came back, but I didn’t know how long that would be.
“We’re just here for the deputy mayor.” Joker shouted, making the crowd quieten down. “As soon as we have him, you can all go back to whatever it is you rich people do.”
He turned as I was pulled in front of him, walking down to me.
“She helped the deputy mayor get out.” The man holding me said, stepping slightly in front of me, his hand still firmly clamped around my arm.
“And you let her?” Joker replied, shooting him.
I gasped as blood sprayed at me. Holding myself together, I carefully wiped some off my skin. I could hear people screaming again, but I ignored it.
“Now then, you must be…” He walked over, putting his gun away and taking hold of my face. “Bruce Wayne’s current squeeze.”
“Get your hands off me.” I demanded.
From deep within his purple jacket, he produced a switchblade that he pressed to my cheek. Any courage I’d managed to draw up from within was gone, and I stared down at the blade, trying not to shake.
“I like a woman who fights back.” His tongue swept over his lips. “Maybe we should see what else you can do.”
He drifted the knife down my front, scraping it along the fabric of my dress. I felt my whole body stiffen as he touched me, but I kept a calm face on.
He looked like he was about to say something more, but suddenly one of the decorative glass windows behind him smashed, and a black shape flew in.
His grip on me relaxed, and I slammed my fist into his chest. He began to laugh, letting me go as everyone tried to run. I took my chance, making my way out the side door and into the alley. A car pulled up in front of me, and I stopped, thinking I was going to have to run again. The door opened, and Harvey stuck his head out.
“Get in.” He waved me over. “I’ll drive you home.”
I did as I was told, shakily climbing into the passenger seat. He handed me a handkerchief, and started driving.
“Where’s Bruce?” He asked. “Did you see him?”
“I don’t know. We got separated in all the chaos.” I lied, wiping the blood off my face. I burst into tears, still reeling from what had just happened. “I don’t know where he is, I don’t know if he’s safe.”
He reached for my hand, softly squeezing it. “Once you’re home and calm, you can call him and find him. But right now, just breathe.”
I spent the drive just taking deep breaths, and by the time he dropped me home, I was feeling better. I thanked him, then headed to my room to shower.
Standing under the water, I could still feel my body shaking. I was still scared, and I needed to see Bruce and make sure he was alright.
Once I got out, I threw on some clothes, then ran down along the passage to the cave. Bruce had installed a proper path, so that I no longer had to jump across the gap. The lights were all on, and the tumbler was there, so he had to be back.
“Bruce?” I called out.
He came running out of the changing area, and he pulled me into his arms, kissing me desperately. It was fearful, and I could tell he was just as scared for me as I was for him.
After a few moments, we pulled apart, both breathless.
“Are you alright?” He asked, looking me over. “All I saw when I burst in was blood on you.”
I nodded. “I’m fine. It wasn’t my blood. Everything is alright, are you?”
“A couple more bruises, but I’ll be fine.” He took my hand, pressing a kiss to my palm. “Come on, you look exhausted.”
