“Wow, I think I seen Lucy over there, Linus,” Lamar said.
“Yeah, Violet said she was meeting them here for a girls night,” Schroeder said.
“Aye, I’ve never seen her come to one of our shows… you think she knows we’re playing?”
“Most likely not, since she’s still here,” Charlie surmised, “Sally made us kick a football earlier today.”
“You and Lucy,” Schroeder asked.”
“How’s your back, bruh?”
“Fine. She actually let me kick it, Lamar.”
“Seriously,” Linus eyes grew wide.
“Yeah… odd, huh?”
“I think she’s just grown up, Charlie. We are in college now.”
“Maybe you’re right, Linus.”
“I saw Gray Industries is doing great,” Lucy said.
“Oh yeah, business is booming,” she laughed.
“How’s school, Lucy,” Patty wondered.
“It could be better, but not bad. I’m following my dream,” she sipped her drink.
“We need to hang out more, who knew Charlie’s little sister would be so cool,” Violet said.
“Hey, I’m right here! Besides; I was always cooler than my brother!”
“You were an annoying little shit that stalked my brother. But I wouldn’t call any other girl my sister,” she smiled sincerely.
“Aww,” the others cooed.
“So this band is good, right?”
“Yeah, they’re Pretty good,” Frieda answered.
“You guys heard them before?”
“Any chance we get,” Violet said.
“Looks like it’s time to go on stage, fellas,” Linus looked at his phone.
Charlie, Schroeder, and Lamar emerged from their dark booth. Lucy was trying to get another drink, when they started playing.
“Hey… thanks for being here! We’re Crooked Strip, and this is our original song; Bad Luck Chuck,” Charlie announced.
Lucy was too distracted to pay attention at first. She followed Eudora to the bathroom, taking up her offer to split a joint to calm her down.
“They really don’t sound bad,” Lucy passed the joint in the stall.
“We told you. This is one of their hits, they’re going to be dropping an album soon,” she puffed.
“I guess I need do need to get out more,” she grabbed the joint, “why does that singer sound familiar, though?”
They made their way through the crowd as they started their next song.
“Okay so, this next song we have a guest singer! Get your ass down here and tell the people what it is, Frieda!”
“Frieda,” Lucy cried baffled.
“Oh all ready?!”
“Go Frieda,” Sally and Violet cheered.
“You’ll love this, Lucy,” she waded through the crowd.
Lucy looked at the stage and saw who was on stage, what was turning out to be a good night, started feeling hollow, and she wanted to leave.
“You didn’t tell me it was Charlie’s band, Sally!”
“No shit, you wouldn’t have came!”
“Now you’re stuck,” Patty laughed.
“No… I don’t want to be here now.”
“You might not like Charlie, but you are going to sit here and support Frieda,” Violet ordered.
“Okay,” she pouted.
“He knows you’re here, anyway,” Sally whispered.
“Okay everybody, so this is one of my favorite songs,” Frieda started, “it reminds me of a close friend of mine, kinda makes it bitter, but I still love it, and her. Hopefully it hits her just right; Broken by Lovely The Band.”
Schroeder plays her in. Charlie sings it with her. The song did touch her, she thought about her past with Charlie, how they were both broken, she wanted to be broken with him, it felt as though he could see her through the lights. The girls pushed her closer to the stage, where in fact he probably would be able to see her.
“She’s great, right,” Violet asked.
“Yeah… not bad at all,” Lucy quietly replied.
She stayed through the next song Frieda sung with them, giving a weak smile as she came off stage.
“Did you like my singing,” Frieda asked her.
“It was great,” Lucy grew more meloncholy.
“Have some fun, Lucy!”
“I think I’m gonna go,” Lucy started to leave.
“You can’t leave yet,” Sally cried.
“Stay with us, please,” Patty begged.
“C’mon Lucy,” Violet got exasperated.
She turned to leave anyway.
“Wait! Don’t go yet! We still have a few more songs,” Charlie yelled in the microphone.
Lucy looked up.
“You can’t just up and leave, not before this next song. Dedicated to an old friend on bad times, whom I care about… more than they know… more than I knew I could. Please. I ask for something I haven’t seen in a long time, something not so fake it hurts to watch.”
“Why does it feel like he’s talking to me directly,” Lucy asked.
“Because he is,” Sally held her hand.
Charlie started singing, “baby hair with a woman’s eyes, I can feel you watching in the night. All alone with me, and we’re waiting for the sunlight.”
“No, he couldn’t be,” she shook her head.
“He is, just stay! “
“When I feel cold, you warm me. And when I feel I can’t go on… you come and hold me.”
“Sorry Sally… Frieda… I gotta go,” she shook free, turning to leave.
“It’s you and me forever.
Lucy smile, oh won’t you smile awhile for me, Lucy?”
Lucy turned around, Sally smiled at her, Violet, Frieda, Patty, and Eudora looked at her.
“Did he say Lucy,” Violet blurted.
“He’s singing to you, Lucy,” Eudora gave her a light shove.
“Did we hear right,” Frieda asked.
“If you feel like leaving, you know you can go,
But why don’t you stay until tomorrow?
And if you want to be free
You know all you gotta do is say so.
When you feel cold, I’ll warm you.
And when you can’t go on…
I’ll come and hold you.
It’s you and me forever.”
“Why would he sing a song to me? Me, the one who tried to make his life hell,” she questioned.
“Right, what’s up with your brother,” Violet wondered.
“Lucy, smile.
Oh won’t you smile awhile for me, Lucy…”
“I told him. We’ve became great friends, sisters since that day. I told him everything, because I know it still hurts you, and I know he’s single, and I know you haven’t been truly happy.”
“What is she talking about, Lucy,” Patty looked concerned, “you haven’t been happy?”
She shook her head.
“She’s in love with Charlie. Isn’t that right? I don’t get it, I might not ever, nor it my place to understand, but I can see it now,” Violet explained.
“Yeah…,” Lucy mustered.
“He had doubts… that’s why the football,” Sally added.
Lucy looked at Sally, taking in what she said, and walked closer.
“Won’t you smile awhile for me, Lucy.
Oh, smile awile
Won’t you laugh, Lucille?
Thank you for making me feel like a man,
Not keeping me crazy, crazy.
Smile awile.
Ooohhh, Lucy,” he finished.
She was right in front of the stage, a look on her face, like he was far from touch, something too precious, like a rare museum piece.
“Lucy… it’s all true isn’t,” he looked down at her.
She looked at Schroeder at the keyboard waving her to speak, to Lamar, whom smiled and nodded.
“Yes… it is, Charlie,” she answered, pain still on her face, fear of what could happen next.
“If I said I could, said that I would, said I was sorry I put you through all of that, if I said I love you, would you smile?”
“Charlie, I love you… and I’m sorry,” she started to cry.
“I love you, is all the apology I need,” he reached for her.
She allowed him to pull her on stage, looking at him with longing, tear filled eyes.
“I love you, Lucy.”
All she could do is smile, a weight lifted, a shadow cast, she looked at her friends, looking back at Charlie, a hand on her chin, guided her lips to his. She almost couldn’t not smile even in the kiss. Still tearful as the barflies cheered and clapped.
“Now that smile… doesn’t look painful at all, in fact, I think that’s the most genuine smile I’ve ever seen from her,” Violet admitted.
“All these years, despite everything, who else would be better for the both of them,” Sally asked.
“Nobody,” Patty sniffled.
“I might’ve never liked him, but there was no guy nicer, or more caring than he was,” Violet looked at the two on stage, “I’m happy we were able to become friends, happier that I know Lucy will be taken care of.”
“On that good note; let’s keep the good vibes going!”
Lamar winked at Charlie as he helped Lucy down, starting the bass intro for their song Vibes. Linus met her as she got off the stage with a hug.
“Well this was unexpected,” Linus said.
“But it’s true.”
“I know it is, Lucy. You have my best wishes, I’m happy you realized your true feelings, and he accepts them.”
“I’ve always pushed at him, after all these years, Charlie is still Charlie,” she started crying on him, “just forgiving and so nice.”
“Not as much as he used to be…. But yeah, he’s those things,” he held her.
“I haven’t been that same bossy, fussbudget girl in years, I can do right by him.”
“I know you haven’t. We’ve been better than we was, and it pained me to see you hurt.”
“Hey, Linus… is she crying,” Sally walked up.
“She’s just happy, Sally.”
Charlie joined them after their set was over, clearing out the instruments. So many people wanted to know the story behind Lucy, if what happened was real. Finally seeing them standing at a table near the bar.
“How’s everybody,” he held Lucy.
“Doing great, big bro,” she raised a Long Island Iced Tea.
“I bet you are,” he laughed.
“Never better, Charlie,” Violet smiled, “my girl is happy, I’m happy.”
“I know I’m good,” Frieda broke her kiss with Lamar.
“And you, Ms. Van Pelt,” he kissed her cheek.
“Better,” she blushed.
“I’m happy for you, Lu-Lu.”
She blushed harder, giggling.
“I’ve never seen this side of her,” Patty laughed, “pet names already, Charlie?”
“You know me; win or lose, I jump headfirst in anything. I want to fall as hard in love as she did with me, ya know?”
“Nice girl you got there, my man,” Schroeder walked up, “I hear she really has a thing for musicians, always talked about marrying one,” he got chuckles from the group.
“Wait till Trisha and Marcie find out my sister is in love with my best friend, I think they’ll both shit a brick,” Linus blurted.
“I’m going to do the best I can for you, and we don’t hafta get married if you don’t want,” she glared at Schroeder.
Schroeder placed his hands on Charlie’s shoulders, whispering in his ear on Lucy’s side, “she’s lying.”
She slapped him on the arm.
“I don’t know what brought this to be… but I wish you both well,” he kissed Lucy on the cheek, “and I hope you come to more of our shows.”
“Are you ready for my sister to unleash all that pent up love,” Linus teased.
“We’ve seen her worse… her perpetual worse… the crabbiness I thought would never end…”
“I know, I know, I was a bitch.”
“But… I know I’m ready to see all the good in her, and I’m prepared to deal with the bad,” he kissed her lips, “If things get low… my Lucy will be here, and her services won’t cost a thing.”
“Not a single nickel,” she added, prompting more laughter.
“Whatever happened to that little psychiatry booth you had as a kid, Lucy,” Frieda asked.
“Snoopy broke it down to rebuild his doghouse,” Linus cackled, “she got so pissed and tried to beat him up.”
“I couldn’t lay a single punch on that dog,” she sipped her drink.
“I don’t know about you guys, but I could use some food… and I’m a bit eager to reconnect with Lucy.”
“Wow, I thought you’d take it easier, not rush, especially after earlier,” Sally figured.
“We know how Lucy is, once she sat her mind on something… I was your boyfriend the moment I said yes, wasn’t I?”
She gave him a sly look, “you do know me too well. I like that. Some how you get me after all this time.”
“When you let me kick that football; I knew where your heart was.”
“She let you kick a football,” Linus and Violet shouted incredulously.
“Big brother,” Linus ran over and hugged him, prompting laughter.
“You are the blessed one here, Charlie, and I know you’re going to do right by her, now go and we’ll catch up,” Violet said.
“That was more than a kick, Charlie. Show my sister what happiness is,” Linus said.
“So, Lu-Lu; where do you wanna go for our date?”
“I guess there’s only one place to go; Quincy’s.”
“What baby wants, baby gets, eh Charlie boy,” Schroeder joked.
“Yeah… something like that,” he laughed.
“I got you, didn’t I?”
“I got you, too,” he kissed in embrace.
