The next day Lucy approached Charlie and Schroeder standing outside between classes.
“Don’t look now, but here comes your lost love,” he exhaled smoke.
“Good grief,” he rolled his eyes.
“Hi Schroeder, did you miss me,” she eyed them up and down, “are you two smoking?!”
“No I did not, and yes we are.”
“Schroeder’s been in to jazz, so I told him, he should smoke for the full experience,” he lazily explained.
“What? That doesn’t even make sense, he doesn’t need to smoke to play jazz! Have you gotten even stupider in my absence, Charlie? Even you can’t be that dumb… that sounds like something your sister would say.”
“Kinda the inspiration, yep, now I have a smoking buddy,” he stretched.
“It’s bad for you… it stunts your growth, and shit,” she scolded.
“I’m good at six-two- how ‘bout you, Schro?”
“Yeah, I’m good here, not like you blow in a piano.”
“That’s the spirit, buddy, yeah.”
“So what do you want, Lucy?”
“Well, I was wondering, since it’s been so long, if we could get reacquainted? My love has barely waivered, my maestro,” she beamed.
“I never loved you, I’d hope time away would give you some clarity.”
Charlie started snickering.
“Besides never loving you, I’m dating Patty.”
“What?! She didn’t even tell me!”
“Harsh,” Charlie chuckled.
“Shut your trap, it’s not funny!”
“If you say so, you’re the one strutting in here like everything’s the same… it’s kinda comedic.”
“Lemme guess; you’re dating Heather?”
“Nope,” he took a drag.
“So not everything is different! See!”
“She’s not even here anymore, or I mighta tried, probably.”
“You? Ha! You can’t even talk to a pretty girl, you’re so fucking hopeless. You’re going to be alone forever.”
“Yeah, you’re probably right about not being able to talk to pretty girls.”
“I know I am.”
“That’s why it’s so easy to talk to you.”
Lucy gasped. Schroeder choked on his cigarette, laughing.
“Take that back, or else,” she balled her fist.
Charlie held his hands up, stepping back, “your words, not mine… and here we are talking.”
Lucy tried to take a swing, he stepped around it.
“Ope, time for class,” he gave her a lazy smile, running off.
“God damn it, Charlie Brown!”
Lucy was sitting with her old friends, plus apparently Violet put her rivalry aside with Tapioca Pudding, so she’s there.
“How’s things going so far, Lucy,” Tapioca asked.
“Pretty good, so far.”
“So Lucy,” Violet leaned in, “I heard you have a crush on Charlie?”
“No! Eww, no!”
They laughed.
“Now you’re saying I have a crush, Frieda?! I only didn’t recognize him is all,” she crossed her arms with a huff.
“He does dress kinda grunge, it’s a rather improvement from those tacky things he used to wear,” Violet mused.
“Plus I saw him and Schroeder outside smoking, and he made me look like a fool in front of him… speaking of Schroeder…”
“Uh-oh,” Patty blurted.
“Oooo,” Tapioca and Violet teased.
“He said you two were dating,” Lucy side-eyed her.
“We are, Lucy, we’re dating,” she stated matter-of-factly.
“How could you?”
“Since you had to leave after parading Snoopy’s death around Charlie, it brought him peace, but sometimes he’d ask for my audience when he was lonely during practice, eventually we started dating.”
“But how?!”
“It helped I wasn’t driving him mad with crazy marriage talk, and bullshit you did,” she rolled her eyes.
“Enough of that, what’s done is done, move on, Lucy,” Frieda spoke.
“Going back to Charlie making a fool of you,” Violet backtracked.
“Well… I was getting on him for smoking, and getting Schroeder to smoke. He’s going on how things aren’t the same like I thought, so I made a crack about one thing being the same was him never being able to talk to pretty girls not knowing Heather doesn’t live here, you know what he told me?”
“Things are different, Lucy,” Frieda spoke.
“He told me that’s why it was so easy to talk to me. He called me ugly in front of Schroeder!”
“That’s actually a good comeback, usually he’ll just agree with what I say, or whatever. Like talking to a brick wall sometimes.”
“Well, Charlie Brown is a blockhead,” Lucy retorted, getting a chuckle out of the girls.
“I’ve pretty much given up on trying to insult him, unless he gets on my nerves,” Violet explained.
“Yeah, I just like to talk to him. Being civil is far easier than trying to break his spirit,” Frieda added.
“And you think he’s cute,” Lucy glared.
“I guess he considers me a friend, since… you know,” Patty added.
“He always calls me snack cup. Lucy this is a different school, people are different, even your brother.”
“Sometimes he calls me rich girl or Ms. Morebucks,” Violet rolled her eyes.
“I like it when he calls me red.”
“Why don’t you just ask him out, then,” Lucy’s eyes narrowed.
“I don’t think he’d be the best boyfriend. Don’t get me wrong, he’s not depressed, or anything, he just… just doesn’t seem like he likes to do anything.”
Lucy sighed, “are we all at least still friends? Can that be one thing that hasn’t changed in this crazy new school.
“Sure we can be,” Frieda replied.
“Yeah, we missed you, Lucy,” Violet added.
“We just don’t really try to make Charlie’s life a living hell, anymore. You took the fun out of it, actually, and then the school started cracking down after what you drove him to do.”
“Oh.”
“He was never the same,” Patty finished.
“Well.. does he still fail at stuff? He’s going to be trying out for the baseball team after school. We can at least see and hope that he fails, right?”
The other girls looked at each other.
“I can’t believe he’s actually trying, we should go watch,” Frieda said.
“That’s the spirit girls!”
After school the girls went to the baseball field to watch the tryouts and see how Charlie does.
“So you did come,” Charlie walked up behind them with Patricia.
“Oh, I wouldn’t miss this for the world,” Lucy reassured.
“You sure all this effort and work won’t be too taxing on you?”
“Shouldn’t be that bad, Ms. Morebucks.”
“Chuck’s gonna kill out there,” Patricia boasted.
“He might strike you out,” Patty teased.
“You wish, girlie,” Patricia laughed.
“Can’t wait to see you fail, Charlie Brown,” Lucy teased.
“Who knows what might happen,” he shrugged, walking off.
“Water off a ducks back,” Patty said.
They sat in the stands.
“Alright slacker, let’s see what kinda pitching you claim you can do,” he tossed him the ball, “Patricia, take bat.”
Charlie just lazily walked to the pitcher mound.
“Oh this is gonna be good! Peppermint Patty has always been a better player! It’s been too long since I’ve seen a batter knock his clothes off,” Lucy exclaimed.
“So you want his clothes off, huh,” Violet teased.
“Shut it.”
“Alright Chuck ‘ol boy, lay it on me, you know I can take it!”
“Let’s do it,” he smiled.
Charlie’s face got serious, he glanced at Lucy with a wink, narrowing his eyes, he winds up, seeing that look on Patricia’s face, throws his fastball. She swung hard.
“Did he just wink at me,” Lucy asked.
“Strike one,” Coach yelled, tossing the ball back.
