Betty Cooper and Reggie Mantle had known each other most of their lives. Reggie and his parents moved to Riverdale when he was five, while Betty, Archie Andrews, Jughead (Forsythe Jones), Ethel Muggs were born there.
Reggie was insufferable, even at such a young age because his parents had spoiled him. He had the best of everything and loved to brag about it. The other kids would always put him in his place, and he was brought down a few pegs when Betty and/or Veronica would stand him up for dates with Archie.
As Reggie grew up, he started to mature, and that maturity caused the girls of Riverdale to begin to like him and flock to him for dates. He was generous and a gentleman, not going any further if the young lady said ‘no’ to making out, or making love. Due to his prowess in sports and the bedroom, girls began to make fools out of themselves over him.
Not to mention him being the winner of a few talent contests for singing and guitar playing. But despite all of that, he had a secret crush on Betty.

One evening, Betty went to Reggie’s house to tutor him in math, and found him in the living room, watching Sports Center on ESPN instead of studying.“What are you doing, Reg? Why aren’t your books out?” He looked over his shoulder at her. The hall light had cast Betty's shadow into the already dimly lit living room. “Hey. You look nice. What's the occasion? Hey, did you dress up for little ole me?” he asked before turning his attention back to the day's NBA highlights. She looked at him as if insulted. “Occasion? Don’t I always look nice?” she demanded playfully. “Come on, let’s get started”
Reggie never took his eyes off the television as he let his hands accentuate his words. “Look, I know you’re here to help me, and you know I love you and all, but they’re showing Kobe's famous drive to the hoop so you've got to silencio the talkio, for a minute, okay? It's very important ‘cause I want to try that move at the game next week.” Still not looking at her, he turned her towards the kitchen, and gave her a gentle push.
“Now, be a good woman and go make me a sandwich, the way I like it.”
“Oh...you... you, asshole. I’m not Midge or Cheryl, you know!” she retorted. She hated the fact that Reggie became sexually active recently and she never missed a chance to let him know how much she hated the girls he slept with. Cheryl Blossom claimed to be his first and bragged about it to everyone in school the day after the deed was done.
Reggie was not insulted. It was not the first time she called him an asshole and would not be the last- that day. She went to the fridge and pilfered a diet soda. Walking back into the living room, the cola in her hand, Reggie looked at the glass and her eyes met his.
“Want some?” she asked. “Sure, thanks.” He reached out and grabbed the can. She watched him pop the tab and drink it from full to empty, draining the can of the last drops. He handed her back the empty can, smiling as he did.
She glared at him icily. “Asshole.” She headed back into the kitchen and got another can of cola, this time swilling it herself and not offering any to Reggie.
“Okay, now put it on that medical channel.” she said. “They're showing crazy, life-saving operations. There's a guy who has his dead twin inside his stomach and they have to operate—”
Reggie cut her off. “I'm not changing the channel. I’m watching this. Are you insane? You're not my girlfriend and you can’t tell me what to do. You're lucky because if you were I would've power-bombed your ass through the kitchen table for even entertaining the idea that I'd do what you told me to do.”
She sucked her teeth, not impressed. “Why you … jack...ass...hole! Please, you try to power bomb me; I'll throw your ass out the window. Then you’d be crying: owww, Mommy, I need you, Mommy...Betty hurt me…wahh…wahh…” she mocked, pretending to be a suffering Reggie.
Without looking at her, he shoved her with one arm, just enough to budge her. She pushed back with both hands. He fended her off with one arm, his eyes never breaking concentration on the television. She got up on her knees and shoved him with both hands but he was far too muscular to budge him. She started bouncing on the couch, pushing on him, her breathing becoming labored. “You like that? Huh? You like getting your ass kicked by a girl?”
Reggie started to fall away from Betty, finally being pushed onto his side by her. He started laughing, pulling her with him as he fell over. “Stop pushing me, you bitch!”
“Bitch? I'll show you a bitch.” she joked, still pouncing on him. With her weight angling down on him, Reggie finally slid down the couch cushion onto his back and Betty slipped off his shoulder, collapsing onto his chest. The kids were both laughing, breathing heavily, Betty lying on top of Reggie's chest.
They looked into each other's eyes, still chuckling, but realized the compromising positions they were in. Their smiles subsided, their breathing slowed. The moment became extremely awkward. One of them had to say something.
“Am I crushing you?” she asked, her face flushed. Reggie was just as bewildered. “Your boobs are crushing me. They're huge,” he laughed uneasily. They both chuckled nervously, staring into each other’s eyes when, Betty’s cell phone rang. Reggie’s face sank, anything but enthusiastic.
“I swear, it better not be...” he muttered as he quickly got off of her. He did not want her to know that he had the beginnings of an erection.
Betty reached for her phone, “Hey Archie,” she said in a shaky voice. She thought she felt the outline of Reggie’s penis through his sweat pants. Reggie rolled his eyes at her and plopped back onto the couch, watching the TV with his eyes, but listening to her conversation with his ears. He listened to the fragmented, one-sided conversation until Betty hung up.
With an attitude in his voice, he said, “Let me guess who that was.” Betty seemed twitchy and nervous. “Yeah, that was Archie.” Now that they were seniors in High School, Betty had been going out with Archie Andrews as much as she could. She did not seem to care that she had competition from Veronica and others, especially a very fast girl named Cheryl Blossom. It wasn’t enough that Cherry had slept with Reggie and bragged about it to all who cared to listen, now she set her sights on Archie, too.
“Yeah, I kinda figured that. What did he want?” Reggie pretended a nonchalance he did not feel.
“He, uh, asked if I could drop him off at the mall. He has to get to work. I figured I’d fix his car for him while he’s at work, then I’ll go back and pick him up. He said we could go to the movies after he gets off work.” Betty's eyes drifted off. He knew that look. She was feeling sorry for Archie, and wanted to help him any way she could. Reggie just shook his head in exasperation.
“He doesn't have his car, Reggie. I don’t mind taking him to work and fixing his car for him.”
“You know he's just using you, right?” She looked at him with a frigid visage that clearly wanted him to mind his business, “No, I don't think that's fair. He's not using me. He’s just hard up for money. You don’t know how it is to be short on cash. He’d do it for me if he could.”
Reggie was shaking his head at her, causing her to jump to her feet and wander towards the doorway.
“Reggie, what do you have against him anyway?” Reggie got up and opened the door for her, then closed it again, turning to her, responding as if insulted. “What do I have against him? Betty, he's a complete and total prick. He's one of those guys that are one hundred percent shit and zero substance and, frankly, I can't believe you'd go out with someone like him. He doesn't respect you. He only calls you when he needs to borrow money or needs a ride, or has no one else to date. You deserve better and you're selling yourself short.”
“Takes a prick to know one. I think you've got it all wrong.” she retorted.
“Oh yeah? When's the last time you two went on a date and he paid? Is he paying for your date tonight?”
She was speechless. After hesitating for a few seconds, she spat out an answer. “I really don't think that's a matter of importance.”
“Uh huh. What? A month? Two months? Three? Come on Betty! Think about it.” He wanted to shake some sense into her.
“Archie wants to save his money so he can take me to the prom and I respect him for that. His parents aren’t rich like yours.”
Reggie’s eyes rolled up and he started to chuckle, mocking her. “Oh please... you're so blind you don't even see you're being taken for a ride. You may not be able to see past his red hair and pretty face, but I do. A real man pays for his dates. He always seems to have money when he takes Veronica or Cheryl out though.”
“He will have money for me, eventually. I guess he should be like you. Wine ‘em, dine ‘em, fuck ‘em and duck ‘em, huh?” She was so angry at him that she could hit him. She hated what he had become: The kind of guy her father and brother warned her about. She did not like this side of her beloved friend.
“Well at least with me, the girls have a good time that I pay for. I never lead them on, either. Can you say the same thing about lover boy?” Reggie could not help but laugh derisively at her as she walked out. Betty was ashamed and had nothing to say in Archie’s defense.
“You see! I’m right about him and you know it. He only calls you if Veronica or Cherry has other plans.” Reggie ran after her, grabbing her arm.
“We've had this conversation before,” he added, “if you think so little of yourself that you think that he's all you deserve, it's your loss. You know there are tons of cool guys out there who are very willing to go out with you and would treat you like a queen. If you just broadened your horizons a little and didn't make up your mind about Archie, you might find someone great.” Betty yanked her arm away from him and kept walking towards her house.
He stopped following her and looked down at a Nerf football at his feet. He snatched it up and threw it, bouncing it off the back of her head. She stopped, turned, and glared at him.
“Movie tomorrow right? Your house or mine?” he asked.
“Try Cheryl’s house. You'll probably have to be the one to work the DVD player. She doesn’t impress me as the tech savvy type, if you know what I mean.” she replied coldly before turning back to walk across the street. She was furious at Reggie. The subject of how Archie dogged her was one of the two things that would make them argue. The other sore subject was Reggie’s womanizing ways.
“Come on, Betty... we never miss movie night.” he said, trying to make peace with her.
“Have movie night with Cheryl or even Veronica. One of them can suck you or fuck you after the movie is over. It's something you can look forward to.” she blurted out angrily. Reggie did not know what to say.
He just stood there in the yard, staring after her until she turned the corner and he could no longer see her. He sadly went inside his house and shut the door.
Betty was fuming the three blocks to her house. As she entered her bedroom to change her shoes, her cell phone rang. It was Reggie. She considered whether to answer. Sighing, she picked it up.
“What!?” she blurted out.
“Geez, what's gotten into you, Betty?” Reggie was annoyed with the fact that she felt such loyalty to Archie, who definitely did nothing to deserve it.
“I just don't see why you hate Archie so much, Reggie.” She felt as if she had to try to reason with him. She hated when they fought.
“Stop saying his name, please. Everything about him is fucking annoying. Even his name,” Reggie snorted in distaste.
“I don't get you. He’s our friend, and you seem to hate him,” she said.
“Betty, I just hate the way he uses you. You’re a smart girl, but dumb when it comes to Archie.
“Reg, he doesn’t use me,” she added, annoyed with him.
“Look, I'm gonna take a nap. Then I’m going out. Have fun with Archie. Talk to you tomorrow.” He hung up in disgust. Betty was saddened. She knew what he meant when he said he was going to “take a nap and go out.” It was his code word for fucking. For that night, she was defeated.
Reggie just does not understand that I love Archie. She loved Reggie too, but in a different way, and she wanted the two guys she loved to get along. But it did not seem as if that was going to happen. Looking at the clock, she knew Archie was waiting in his front yard for her to arrive. She had to get going.
Men! She just didn't understand them not one bit.
