‘Eeeeekkkkk! Betttyyyyyyy!!!!’ Nancy sprung on her as she opened the door.
‘Who dropped you?’ she almost shouted.
‘Can I get inside first?’ Betty pleaded. She was shivering now.
‘That was some car.’ Nancy continued as Betty moved towards her washroom. Nancy’s parents weren’t home.
‘You’ve never been the one to care about cars or brands.’
‘Yes! But that looked like a guy. I couldn’t really make out as I was peeping out of my bedroom window but he was wearing cargos. Has to be a him.’
‘Nancy, am borrowing your tank and pj’s for the moment.’
‘You can keep them if you tell me who he was.’
‘I don’t understand what’s the big deal?’ Betty said as she towel-dried her hair.
‘BIG DEAL? Betty how many guys have you been friendly since kindergarten?’
‘Why? I have..’ Betty protested, in vain.
Nancy continued, ignoring her’ Lemme see.. Juggie, Chuck, Moose, Dilt.. and.. and... NOBODY. And these are all our childhood friends.’
Betty looked offended.
‘Bets.’
‘That doesn’t say anything. All my girl friends are also my school friends.’
Nancy offered a cookie with a straight face before she asked ‘Is he hot?’
‘Nance!’ Betty shooed.
‘C’mon. Details. Please. You’re my best friend.’
‘Only after we settle on what we’re going to put on tomorrow. I haven’t bought anything. And there isn’t much time either.’
‘Betty! Betty! Betty! You’ve the greatest friend in the world that could ever be found.’ Nancy replied as she was already fishing her pile of clothes. She cheerily brought a packet and emptied the contents on the bed.
Betty’s blue eyes turned brighter. ‘OMG! You bought this Bebe bandage dress we saw the other day?’
‘And the striped b/w bodycon too. My parents agreed for an early birthday present.’
‘You’re gonna be a stunner tomorrow. I can’t wait to see you in this. Try it on. Try it on NOW.’
‘We’re gonna look stunning tomorrow Bets. You can wear the other one.’
‘Nance. Oh! No! I couldn’t. You should wear it first.’
‘Seriously Betty. You looked beautiful in the bodycon that day at the store. And we’re going to do something about your ponytail.’
Betty hugged Nancy tight.
‘Nance, are you asleep?’
‘Not yet.’
‘Do you think he’ll come? Reggie? Tomorrow.’
‘No. I don’t think he will.’
‘Huh?’
Nancy hit Betty with her pillow. ‘Ofcourse he will. Isn’t this why he asked you to invite him?’
‘I don’t think he will. Maybe he was being nice.’
‘Then why would he bother asking you the details? He even asked your digits, right?’
‘But he hasn’t messaged.’
‘BETTY! You over-think everything. Give the guy a chance. Looks like he likes you.’
‘No way!’
‘Good Night pessimist.’
‘Night.’
It was still showery as Reggie lazily lay on his couch. He couldn’t get the image of a drenched, shivering blondie out of his mind. Her scent was mild, but it turned him on.
The way her bangs were plastered to her forehead making him want to draw the hair away to be able to look into her eyes, her blue eyes, and when their fingers accidentally grazed while changing the gear. And he failed to understand what was going on. This wasn’t usual for Reggie Mantle. Not at all.
