M/F, makeout, teaseHe watched her sit motionless, peering out at him for a minute as he made his way down the rough track, pushing aside undergrowth that had grown out across the path. Then in a moment she was gone. He saw a flash of bushy tail as she sped down the far side of the trunk, and saw the undergrowth move, ever so slightly, between the Sequoia and a neighbouring tree. It took a moment, but then he saw her again, only because she was so still that her chocolate-brown face actually stood out amidst the gently moving leaves and branches. That and the tiniest flash of white in a distant grin.
Tedd never ceased to wonder at the transformation that came over Grace in the woods. His logical mind pointed out that the woodland creature that made up part of her alien biology was cosmetic only, a structural template for her intelligent flesh to wrap itself around, but he couldn't help feel that Grace had some powerful instincts that brought out a furtive, elegant and, well, graceful aspect of herself that rarely surfaced at home. She was beautiful like this, but it was a distant kind of beauty, like watching a tiger prowling or an eagle in the sky, knowing that to come close would ruin that effortless comfort. Desire to go to her warred with desire to see her flowing through the trees, darting and playing. He knew she was doing it as much because he loved to see her like this as because she found it enjoyable herself. He wished he could show her how much that meant, but no words could express it, so instead he continued to walk towards the valley's heart.
Later, he sat down on a broad rock that stood on the edge of the clear stream that ran down the deepest part of the valley. Grace had vanished for the moment, but he knew she would be close by. Tedd wasn't really at home at camp, he was too used to having the convenience of books and screens at his disposal. His laptop's batteries had died two nights ago and he'd finished both textbooks and the novel he'd brought in the car, Grace curled up asleep beside him, breathing on his shoulder. Now he had nothing to distract him other than the trees and water. It wasn't that he didn't appreciate them, but he took the scene in so fast that relaxing in one spot bored him quickly. He began to look around, wondering if he could spot any of the birds that were calling back and forth through the branches, a tiny hint of worry touching the edge of his mind as to where Grace had gone.
A shadow passed overhead and a split second later Tedd was sprinkled with a curtain of icy spray as Grace plunked into the deep pool below the rock with a tearing splash. He gasped and reflexively shunted back on the rock as the water hit him. Then he laughed as the shock wore off and wiped the trickles of water from his glasses. Grace surfaced in the pool, her huge squirrel tail fluffed out behind her. She swam easily to the shallows at the edge and stood. Her natural form, as much as that term could apply, was short and stocky, almost human but for her feet, head and darting tail. Drenched with water, her normally chestnut fur was almost black, darker than the speckled pebbles under her feet. She grinned at him and stretched her arms, tail flicking sprays of water across the pool. He knew what would happen next but it was still utterly adorable. Every hair on her body suddenly went from plastered flat to puffed straight out, turning her into a standing pompom. Water scattered as the hair took on hydrophobic qualities and Grace went from sopping wet to slightly damp as she waddled onto the bank on legs that looked like fairy floss canes.
Tedd was still not entirely sure how Grace had gained such fine control over the properties of her body, she could turn her fur as sheer and soft as down or as coarse and warm as sheep's wool in moments. It had taken him months to muster up the courage to ask whether he could have a couple of samples to study and they had yielded little. Split from her body the hair was just hair and, fascinated though he was, his insides burned at the prospect of asking to put it under the microscope while still attached. He loved her far too much to be willing to risk upsetting her for selfish interests, a thought made doubly keen as her fur settled back down, revealing the soft female shapes beneath.
He looked away and dug in his bag as she walked up around the side of the rock. As she came close he handed her a folded wad of clothing consisting of jeans, a loose shirt, a bra and some hair ties. He blushed a little as he handed them over, even though he was used to carrying spare clothes for her whenever they went out alone. The hand that took the clothes from him was soft but not furry. He knew that Grace's body had melted into its usual human form and so he looked out over the water while she dressed. He knew she didn't mind him seeing her naked, in fact she positively forced him to frequently enough, but he could never get over the instinct to look away.
The others often teased him for his interest and curiosity, but they never really understood how he felt. True, he liked looking at naked girls as much as any boy his age, perhaps even more. It was that 'perhaps', the potential that he was abnormally fixated on them that made him careful not to indulge himself in the presence of an actual girl, especially Grace, despite the irony of her highly fluid gender. His friends didn't appreciate how much more they meant to him than what a little visual stimulation was worth. He didn't mind, they were worth more than that as well.
His view was abruptly interrupted by Grace's chest as she leaned across him. Thankfully, she had put on both shirt and bra, though this did not entirely prevent Tedd getting both an eyeful and a noseful of boob. Grace's preferred human body was, perhaps predictably, rather more well endowed than her sleek hybrid one. Tedd couldn't help notice how her bust had subtly but noticeably increased once she had begun to figure out his tastes.
Once she was straddling him, Grace curled up against his chest and rested herself against him. He felt her lips twitch in a smile against his neck as she no doubt felt the inevitable bulge in his thin trousers, but she knew him well enough now not to tease. She could make Tedd quite literally uncomfortably horny with that sort of intimate play and, while there were certain benefits to it, Grace had learned that for all his kinks and obsessions, Tedd loved just as much to be close to her and enjoy that closeness without having to walk funny to do it. It was an understanding that came naturally, for Grace herself shared that desire for trusting intimacy and so the two made a warm little bundle of each other on the sun speckled rock.
After a few minutes his erection had subsided to the point where it wasn't actually a discomfort. Once this had happened it would generally stay down so long as Grace didn't do anything absurdly provocative. Like, say, breathe on the wrong spot or shift slightly in the wrong place. They had discovered, however, that one thing in particular was very good at drawing Tedd's focus (and blood supply) away from his crotch. Grace moved her head up to his and their mouths found each other immediately. They kissed gently and for a long time, stroking each other's hair, feeling the warmth of their lips, tongues brushing against each other in soft langour. It was a kind of deep, warm passion that had to be earned through deliberate calm and gentleness on the part of both lovers, something Tedd was beginning to realise he and Grace were quite rare in possessing for people their age. A warm blush crept over him as he felt her soft cheek against his and her closed eyelids tickled his nose.
Never let it be said that I don't know how to appreciate what's in front of me, he thought dreamily as Grace murmured something lovingly incomprehensible into his lips, the last of the day’s warmth covering them both as the sun dipped towards the horizon.

Not for the first time Grace wondered how she had gotten everyone out to the campsite in one piece. Technically, Ellen and Elliot had done most of the organisation, since it was their cars which had actually gotten them to the Fir wood via a long and cramped roadtrip. Grace, however, was the oldest of the group and the only one over eighteen so, when it came down to it, she was responsible for them all.
For the most part the responsibility had been symbolic, but when tempers had frayed on the last leg of the trip Grace had made certain that she was up to the task. She never quite understood it but the others seemed to cheer up and be more responsible when she was in earshot. She had used that to her advantage and been everywhere, alternately calming, weedling and applying gratuitous doses of puppy eyes to raw nerves that appeared.
Now, under a wooden pavilion barely big enough to fit all eight teenagers, she was helping get the evening meal out. This may have seemed like a simple task, but when Susan had to almost sit on someone to fit and Tedd had about as much personal space as an oyster, not to mention having to satisfy everyone's dietary preferences, the result was spectacularly chaotic.
Despite the disorganisation, everyone was in good spirits. Nanase, Ellen and Susan had gone off on a walk to muck around with their various magical talents out of sight, Sarah had set up a canvas on a ridge overlooking the valley and lost herself painting. Elliot and Justin had been left to drag heavy bags from the cars down to the camp like proper gentlemen while she and Tedd got some alone time out in the woods. She felt a little guilty for not helping them more, but she knew her boyfriend had needed space, so she had drawn him out into the forest and then used the best way she knew to improve his mood. The fact it was such an enjoyable technique did somewhat mitigate the guilt...
As she finally got the last of the food untangled and set on the wooden table, Grace relaxed and let the good spirits wash over her, reveling in a job well done. The meal was simple but tasty, picked up from little stores and stands along the road on the way to the campsite. She winked and grinned at Sarah as she took a loaf of fresh bread from the other girl and ripped off a thick piece, then spooned sides onto her paper plate. The other girl rolled her eyes as she took the loaf back and set it on an impromptu breadboard. The two of them had spent almost half an hour just getting things out of the various cooler bags and cardboard boxes that Elliot and Justin had unceremoniously piled in the lee of the pavilion. Oblivious to their tactical error, the two boys were digging into plates piled high with cold cuts and salad.
Noticing this, Ellen elbowed her brother in the ribs and nodded at Sarah.
“You're forgetting something, champ.”
Elliot's face became momentarily confused and then flustered as Ellen turned to Sarah and drawled in a passable impression of a centenarian southerner mother-in-law.
“You sure about this'un, darlin? Seems awwwwful impolite to me”
Sarah laughed easily as Elliot blushed, leaning over to plant a kiss on her cheek and whispering thanks in her ear.
“Dayum good kisser though, I can see why you put up with him,” Ellen continued, her expression and tone flowing back into her natural cheeky demeanour.
Grace wasn't sure, but she thought she heard the slightest edge of envy in Ellen's words. Now that was interesting, she'd have to ask Ellen about it later...
On the other side of the table, Nanase was winking at Susan and saying something about the girls cooking while the boys unpacked. Susan took it with her usual long-suffering expression.
“If it happens like that it happens,” Susan said, shrugging, “We could have done it the other way around and I don’t think anyone here would have cared.”
“Well, I would have enjoyed wandering off into the woods rather than carrying tents around for a couple of hours,” Justin grumbled good-naturedly
Susan smiled back at him “Why didn’t you say so then?”
“Nevermind,” Justin muttered around a mouthful of salad.
“What you should really be asking is what those two were off doing,” Nanase said, tilting her head towards Grace and winking at Ellen. “Three hours off in the forest, not even a whisper when they get back. I thought you two were just going to check out the valley, not skip out on helping set up”
Grace composed a wounded look, possibly ruined by eyes that twinkled in the lamplight. “We got lost, but we found a really nice freshwater pool. I went for a dive and had to sit out in the last of the sun for a bit to dry off”
Ellen laughed “I bet you did, and no doubt Tedd was more than eager to help the process”
Grace smiled and shrugged noncommittally “All I can say is he’s got a hidden talent for massage, I haven’t felt this loose in ages”
Ellen and Nanase exchanged raised eyebrows, but Grace only noted this out of her periphery, because she had noticed Tedd seemed less at his ease than the others.
“We just went for a walk, you guys went off too,” He said.
Nanase rolled her eyes “Yeah, but we came back before dark. Must have been some massage.”
Tedd shrugged, and Grace heard a note of embarrassment in his voice “We set up our tent straight after we got here, you guys went off right away, so we had the extra time. It’s nice out there at twilight”
Ellen giggled and managed to say “Of course” in a way that apparently accommodated a paragraph of subtext, the way Tedd flushed and looked away.
Sarah and Elliot were beginning to look awkward as well, so Grace interrupted the banter “It also means that we aren’t going to be stumbling around in the dark for half the night with flashlights trying to set up our tents somewhere other than on top of a rattlesnake nest”
“Yes,” Susan noted, gesturing at the detritus of the meal with a half-eaten drumstick “Which is why you two are on cleanup duty”
Tedd and Grace looked at each other
“All in favour?” said Ellen, grinning broadly and raising her hand.
Five more hands were raised above assorted smirks.
“God bless America,” Ellen proclaimed with infinite gravitas.
