Chapter Two
Since they were children, Reggie Mantle had a huge crush on Veronica Lodge. Veronica always had eyes for Archie Andrews, using Reggie as a backup whenever Betty could get Archie away from her. Or she would date Reggie when she needed a date that had money to take her to some fancy shindig. Archie was always broke. Reggie and Archie were friends as children, but their relationship changed once they noticed girls. They were rivals for Veronica’s affections. Veronica toyed with them both over the years. Betty Cooper was always in the background of this. She and Veronica fought over Archie. Reggie and Archie fought over Veronica. Veronica was the only child of multimillionaire Hiram Lodge. He did not like anyone his daughter dated from Riverdale. Surprisingly, Hiram Lodge became very fond of Reggie Mantle when he came to work for the Lodge Enterprises, Inc. in New York. . It wasn’t always like that. Reggie was a very wayward boy: never serious about anything except his looks, his cars and girls. He had to be bribed by his parents to get good grades in school. Reggie proved himself a very astute businessperson. Lodge was impressed with Reggie because he had that touch of ruthlessness needed in order to be successful in business. After Reggie graduated from Harvard Business School, he got a job offer with Lodge Enterprises in New York City. He soon discovered a bogus company scam that would have put the Lodges in the poorhouse. Instead, he turned the tables on the phony investors, and made his family and the Lodges an even larger fortune. After that he was promoted to Vice President of finance, pulling in a huge six figure salary. He was very good in acquisitions, taking over dying companies and building them up for Lodge. With the increase in the Mantle and Lodge fortunes, there was an increase of affection from Veronica Lodge for Reggie. She had been ready to make a commitment to Archie, but changed her mind when Reggie came to Riverdale for his vacation last summer. She could not believe how good he looked and how he carried himself with such confidence. Her father raved about his business prowess all the time. That in itself was intriguing to Veronica because her father was very hard to impress. Reggie was tough as nails. He also was the only person who could bend Veronica to his will. He was not easy to manipulate as Archie was, so he kept her on her toes. She found this very attractive. They had gone out for dinner one evening, and ended up making wild love in a very fancy hotel suite. She quickly fell out of love with Archie Andrews and genuinely fell in love with Reggie. But a lot of women wanted Reggie, so Veronica kept him close and was very possessive of his affections. She just noticed that her good friend Betty was a close friend to Reggie and she was very jealous. Veronica noted how Betty had reacted to Reggie when she saw him again in town after the years away in college. Even though Betty and Reggie had not seen each other much during their years at college, they had always kept in touch with each other by phone or e-mail. When Betty’s parents were killed in a car accident three years earlier, she cried on Reggie’s shoulders, not Archie’s, though Archie was there by her side. Reggie helped her sell the family home, because it was too painful for Betty to live there alone. Her older siblings, Polly and Chick were living in other states, and did not wish to return to Riverdale. Once they had graduated from college, Betty and Reggie resumed their close friendship in person. Though he was working in New York, he visited Riverdale a lot. Betty was still chasing Archie, even though she had her own apartment and a very good job as an editor for The Riverdale Chronicle-A Mantle enterprise. Reggie had helped Betty get that job, but she had more than proved herself an excellent editor and writer. Reggie dated Betty whenever he could get away from school or work. Then before you know it, Veronica decided she wanted Reggie. Therefore, that, as they say, was that. Things would have to change. Veronica truly resented Reggie’s easy friendship with Betty Cooper, her best friend. In Veronica’s mind, now that she was going to marry Reggie, Betty’s friendship with him would have to change. She would not tolerate them being the close friends they were now that she was engaged to Reggie. “Betty, I want you to be my maid of honor. I know you and Reggie have always been good friends, but you do know that your friendship with him has to change. You can’t be best friends with my husband. I will be his best friend, not you. Just like Archie and my friendship will change. I know you understand.” “Ronnie, I don’t understand why our friendship would be a problem. You know there was never any romance between Reggie and I.” “I know Betty. I just can’t stand him giving anyone else but me his undivided attention. Who would think that a person you knew all of your life would suddenly become the love of your life? I never thought I would ever fall in love with Reggie Mantle.” They both laughed at that. Veronica hugged Betty to take away any sting her words may have caused. She had made her point. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
