***two weeks later***
Nara was pulling into the parking lot of the newly rebuild Gotham East Hospital. She'd went to work here shortly after it happened. It was lucky to because the work she did her allowed her to move out of her studio apartment down by the narrows and into her current house.
"NARA!!! COME QUICK!!!" A resident called seeing her pull up in the parking garage. She wondered if he had been waiting or was just on a smoke brake. She locked her car and threw her keys in her purse as she took off running to where the younger man stood.
"Dr. Stewart wanted you to report to the psych ward as soon as you came in." He said falling into step beside her as she ran past.
"What's up?"
"The Joker came to a couple hours ago, we've got him sedated but you've had firsthand experience with him."
"Thanks." Nara said then took off running as fast as she couldn’t knowing that he wouldn’t be able to keep up with her burst of speed since he was a smoker. It didn’t take her long to get to the elevator and click the button the gleaming silver doors opened immediately admitting her. She stepped in and hit the button for the top floor, she could use the 14 floor ride to catch her breath and prepare herself for what was to come. She closed her eyes and centered herself, when the bell rang her eyes snapped open. She knew she was ready for this, she stepped out and saw Hannah the permanent day secretary up here.
"Nara, Room 1408 please." Hannah said as Nara stepped out, Nara nodded and pulled out her I.D card to get past the locked doors of the psych ward. Once she was through she sprinted down the hall, even if Hannah hadn't told her the room number the presence of two G.C.P.D. officers, Commissioner Gordon, and Batman talking to Dr. Steward would have given it away.
"Are you saying that he could be untouchable?" Batman growled.
"I'm saying that he might not recover his memory and if that’s the case then-" Dr. Steward stopped speaking as Nara slid to a stop beside him. She was somewhat please that she got so close to Batman before he noticed, it caused him to jump back in reflex ready for a fight. She knew she'd have to tell Harley about that.
"Kyle said you wanted me." Nara said without waiting.
"Ah yes, I believe you spent some time at Arkhem before you came here?"
"Yes, I did."
"Alright, the G.C.P.D. brought in a former inmate. During the test he came to and he doesn’t remember anything. Hopefully you might know him, but we need to prepare you."
"For what? I can only think of one man that would keep Batman out past dawn." Nara said shooting a glance at the caped crusader.
"Yes well then if you’re ready this way." Dr. Stewart said motioning for her to go into the room. The room looked empty, but Nara could feel it wasn’t.
"Where is he?" Dr. Stewart asked. Suddenly the room filled with cops checking every nook and cranny.
"I thought you said he was sedated?" Batman growled at the doctor. At that moment a toilet flushed from the attached bathroom and man his head wrapped in gauze stumbled out and looked around.
"I'm okay, just had to pee." He said innocently holding on to the door frame. Nara was the first to respond to the man by stepping around the cops most of whom either had their hands on their weapons or actually had them aimed at the make-up less Joker.
"Let’s get you back into bed." Nara said sliding her arm around him, he smiled at her and let her help him. She navigated around the cops and helped him lay back down.
"Are you my nurse?" He asked in the same innocent tone.
"Don’t plan on any sponge baths." Nara said with a smirk, this caused him to giggle and she was pleased that he was still showing signs of himself. The look on his face was priceless though, she could tell that he hadn't expected her to not only know what he was going to say, but actually counter it. She winked at him before turning around to the other men.
"As you can see he is present and accounted for, now get out your distressing the patient." Nara said flatly. As if on cue the man on the bed seemed to become pale and restless.
"Yes, yes, out all of you." Dr. Stewart said, the cops started filing out. Batman walked out backwards followed only by the doctor, who shut the door behind them.
"What do you remember?" Nara asked quietly turning around.
"Not much I woke up down stairs with an armed guard and that big guy in the costume. Is it Halloween?" He said back sitting up in the bed a little, but he didn’t raise his voice.
"No that’s Batman, he always dresses like that, don’t ask. I think it’s a fetish." Nara said waving her hand dismissively. "I'll be right back, stay in this room please."
"Okay." He said and laid back, as Nara walked away she couldn’t help thinking that was to easy.
"Doctor," Nara said when she stepped out. "I'd like to file the papers to get him into my program."
"Yes, of course I thought you might. I have the papers-" Dr. Stewart began but was cut off.
"What exactly is your program?" Batman asked.
"Don't you have some place to go? Preferably some place that will teach you manners?" Nara snapped.
"Nara is a leader in memory recovery, in 98% of her cases the patients regained full access to all their memories. In the remaining 2% they gained access to at least 85% of their memories."
"In short," Nara snapped clearly upset. "I specialize in regaining memory."
"Wait you wouldn’t be N. Rubis, the state authority on memory loss?" Gordon suddenly asked.
"Yes I am." She kept her voice crisp, it was the same voice she used when speaking to many of the male doctors in her field. It often made them pay more attention to her words and less to her body.
"I don’t think your methods would be a good idea in this case." Gordon said.
"What methods?" Batman asked again clearly not liking being left out.
"Doctor Rubis takes the person to a secure undisclosed location and-"
"NO!!" Batman yelled.
"YOU don’t get to make that choice; it IS what is in the best interest of the patient." Nara said evenly, she knew in a yelling match she would lose. However Batman was on her turf and she knew the laws and how to work the system, as long as Joker didn’t have his memories and was in custody it was the state’s job to do everything they could to help him in any way the presiding doctor said to.
"YOU don’t know him like I do. He doesn’t need to remember he needs to be locked up!!" Batman yelled.
"LOCKED UP FOR SOMETHING HE DOESN’T REMEMBER?! That’s absurd!" Nara said stepping up and going toe to toe with him. She didn’t like it but admitted to herself that sometimes it was necessary to get through to people.
"THAT DOESN’T MEAN HE IS INNOCENT!!" Batman shot back.
"I don’t know what I might have done but I don’t think your screaming is going to help me remember anything." A voice cut through their argument.
"I thought I asked you stay in the room?" Nara said glaring over her shoulder at him.
"I am." He said simply, Nara looked at where he was standing and noticed that he was leaning out of the door. She looked back at Batman who was clenching his teeth.
"Tom you said you have the papers ready?" She asked, looking directly into Batman's eyes. She'd made up her mind, they couldn’t get an injunction in the next five minutes and after she got him out of here they wouldn’t find him.
"Yes." He said and handed her a clip board.
"Don’t do it." Batman said, almost pleadingly.
"I took an oath that I have to uphold, I don’t have a choice in the mater Bats." Nara said skimming the release papers before signing them.
"Gordon," Batman said desperately.
"I'm sorry there is nothing I can do." He said hopelessly.
"His personal effects are in the room." Dr. Stewart said, taking the clipboard back and looking it over.
"Thank you," she said and turned on her heals and walked back into the room.
"You can’t take him, he's still under arrest." Gordon said, apparently he thought was actually going to stop Nara. His smirk only served to piss her off more.
"According to the LAW you have to let us do whatever is in HIS best interest. Also according to THAT paper," she said pointing at the paper. "I'm his primary care provider and I say we ARE leaving." She said as she found the bag hanging in the closet with the Joker's cloths. She could tell by the weight that in their rush the nurses hadn't taken the time to remove ALL of his weapons. She handed him the bag and he looked at it dumbly.
"Those are your cloths so get dressed." She said calmly, Gordon seemed to be searching desperately for any way to prevent this.
"Fine! Then you are having a guard outside your facility at all times. If he even sets a toe outside then you'll go down for aiding and abetting." Gordon said finally hoping he'd get it.
"Commissioner if you can find my facility you can throw Wood Stock in the yard." Nara with a humorless smile, her tone was so final that neither Gordon nor Batman had a comeback. She turned to see that Joker was pulling out his jacket and sliding it on. She took the clear plastic bag and shoved it in her pocket before holding her hand out to the handsome man that looked nothing like his alter ego of the clown prince of crime. Only his scars gave him away, as he took the offered hand and let her lead him out. The cops didn’t seem to know what to do and Nara didn’t stop until they got in to the elevator.
"Am I that bad?" He asked in the quietness.
"That remains to be seen, I've always believed that you decide yourself." Nara smiled.
"What if I remember something I don’t like?"
"Well sadly that is a fact of life however I believe that if a person lived through it once they can do so again." She said touching his shoulder to comfort him, she did not want to go into too much detail.
"Do you think you can really help me?" He asked, as she slid her hand off of him.
"I believe so, but then again it all depends on you. If you resist my methods then you won’t remember a thing."
"Yes," he said with a sigh. "I want to remember.”
“Good.” She smiled at him, as the elevator doors opened and she led him out.
