Before leaving for school, Betty kissed her parents goodbye.
The elder Coopers had never seen their daughter throw out everything she had of Archie before. Oh, she would throw out a few things, but run back before trash pick up and place them back where they belonged in her room.
Did  they dare hope it was over??
Was their baby girl finally getting rid of that Archie character?
They had disliked Archie because of how he treated their princess. He always seemed a little shady to them. They stayed out of it. Betty had to make her own choices. But they prayed for this day. Betty was a smart girl. She'll get sick of him one day.
Betty arrived at school in a very short dress she made the past weekend, when she sat home, crying and dateless. It was a beauty. It was royal blue, with lace bodice in front and lace in the back. She had a short jacket to hide the back lace for modesty, but she planned on taking the jacket off after school.
Betty was too modest to show too much skin in school, though.. She wore medium high shoes with pointed toes, black with little silver studs on them. Very sexy little number indeed.
Oh and she wore her hair down. This she did before entering the school. Betty Never wore her hair down. She loosened her pony tail before entering the school. Shaking her hair into a wild mass of waves. She was ready.
Betty had caused quite a few heads to turn as she passed.
Reggie Mantle was coming down the hallway from the opposite direction. Reggie had just left his locker and had 2 girls with him- Cheryl Blossom and a girl named Sheila Hanson.( Reggie also could not resist digging at Archie about wearing a sundae yesterday.)
Cheryl and Sheila were two fast rich girls, and they ran with a fast crowd  who were sexually active and didn't hide that fact. They were the most popular girls in school.
When Reggie saw Betty's new look he stopped short in his tracks, mouth gaped open at the sight of her.
The two girls with him followed his stare and saw Betty.
Both sets of blue eyes were narrowed in envy.
“Hey Bets, looking good today girl”, Reggie said
Betty blushed, thanking him and moving on. He turned to see her from the back
‘Damn, she is fine. Why have I never notice her like this before? Wonder what happened with that carrot topped asshole? Could she really be finished with him?’ Reggie sure hoped so. He was sick of seeing how Archie treated Betty, and making her cry, the dip shit....
Reggie Mantle was known as one of Riverdale's bad boys. He was not only the biggest flirt and womanizer, he was also a smart-ass, and a prankster. He loved playing cruel jokes on Archie Andrews and Moose Mason. He was very rich, a good dresser, and an All American athlete, that is he excelled at all sports.
He was an accomplished dancer, guitarist, actor and singer. He got good grades.
He was also a jerk, egomaniac and totally immoral when it came to the ladies.
He was all flash, and fast. He flirted with Midge Klump and took beatings from her brutish but usually  good natured boyfriend Moose (That is unless you tried to move in on Midge)
Reggie was also very handsome in that dangerous way that makes woman risk their virtue ( or surrender it) for a good time. He had black hair and green eyes, that turned brown or hazel when he was emotionally challenged.
He never dated good girls, except Betty Cooper and that was because she needed a date when that nitwit Archie stood her up. Reggie hated to hear that she sat home alone and had been crying. She could have dated anyone, but she waited for Archie.
Reggie never mistreated any girl by forcing himself on her, physical or mentally.
They wanted him and he tried to go with them all. He never lied to them.
Reggie matured a lot the last year in high school. He had gone to Europe the past summer, and he learned to be more humble. A little. At least he cared for others more than his mirror and bragged a little less about himself now. He still called himself ‘Mantle the Magnificent’.
Reggie always would keep an eye on Betty. Someone might try to take advantage of her. He felt he was her protector. He was the only stable thing she felt she could count on.
He was her rock.
Reggie stayed away from Betty most times, because she might have needed protection from him, especially if she keeps looking the way she looks today.
But he always kept an eye on her even though she didn’t know it.
Reggie felt he had to protect her .from guys like him, but who had no scruples.
Like the time he caught Archie trying to hit on her when she was distinctly finished with him and she had asked no demanded he go away. Reggie swiftly picked Archie up by his collar, choking him and literally kicked him in his ass, with a warning that it would be worse if he caught him bothering Betty again.
Or the time a rich kid from Pembrook Hall, Chet, tried to hit on Betty at the mall. He didn’t want to take no for an answer. All it took was a scowl from Reggie to leave her alone. Betty didn’t see this interaction. Or when a guy named Mat had cornered Betty after school and tried to kiss her. Reggie enjoyed kicking his ass, yes sir he did. Matt had two black eyes for weeks. They started calling him 'Raccoon' around the school.
All Betty knew was that  she was relieved when the creeps just suddenly left her alone.
Actually after that, Chet and Mat, either crossed the street or slunk down low if they saw Reggie..
Reggie was the guy who took beatings from Big Moose and always came out laughing. He had to have a screw loose or something to do that. He was crazy all right.
